Gail B. Knapp Alexander

Gail B. (Knapp) Alexander, 80, a resident of Kennewick, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Saturday evening, November 9, 2002, at Canyon Lakes Restorative and Rehabilitation Center, of natural causes.
She was born on April 16, 1922, in Pullman WA. Married to William King Alexander on January 2, 1942 in Pullman. They moved to Richland in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project. Except for a few brief periods she was a lifelong resident of the Tri-Cities. Bill and Gail were charter members of the Richland Nazarene Church where they both gave selflessly of their time and resources to expand and grow the facility as a demonstration of the love and commitment to Christ and his church. Gail became a member of Bethel Church in 1996 where she regularly attended until recently. Gail was greatly admired for her God given gift to make exquisite items that included hand stitched quilts, etched glasswork, woven fabrics, and the world’s greatest apple pie.
Survivors include her sons David J. Alexander of Stanwood, WA and John D. Alexander; her daughters Julia A. Alexander of Forks, WA, Rebecca G. Alexander of Millersburg, KY and Beth L. Wasemiller of West Richland, WA.; twelve grandchildren and one great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990 and by her son Michael in 1994.
A visitation will be held at Einan’s Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 13th, from 3 to 8pm. Funeral Services are scheduled on Thursday, November 14, at 11:00 a.m. at Einan’s in Richland.

Edith Mary Bates
February 22, 1923 - October 31, 2002

Edith M. Bates, 79, passed away at her home in Richland, WA.
She was born February 22, 1923 in Bloomington, WI. She has graced the Tri- Cities area for 54 years.
Edith worked for the Department of Energy. She was a faithful and constant member of Christ The King Catholic Church and the Young Ladies Institute.
She is survived by her son, Deigh T. Bates, and daughter Doris A. and Paul D. Leavitt, 3 grandchildren, Jennifer M. Friebel, Timothy P. Leavitt, and Nicole M. Roberts, and her brother Robert L. Lyness.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband Deigh S. Bates
There is a Rosary at Einan's Funeral Home Wednesday 6, 2002 at 6:00 p.m. A memorial will be held at Christ The King Catholic Church on Thursday 7, 2002 at 10:00 a.m.

Esther June Alkire
June 28, 1917 - October 25, 2002

Esther June Alkire died peacefully Oct. 25.
Esther was born in Macrorie, Saskatchewan to her Norwegian parents, Oscar and Anna Finsand, on June 28, 1917. She married George Junior Alkire of Missoula, Mont. on April 4, 1942.
Esther earned a B.S. from Walla Walla College and a medical technology degree and an M.A. in mathematics from the University of Oregon. She was a member of Sigma Xi and Pi Mu Epsilon.
Esther was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother . Her family and friends remember her for her optimistic outlook on life and her enthusiastic involvement in various school and church activities. She participated in a number of organizations including the American Association of University Women, the Mid Columbia Symphony Guild, Friends of the Library, tutoring, Questers and as an educational advisor of Beta Sigma Phil. Her love of outdoor life included golf, tennis, boating and RV adventures. Her travels took her to all 50 states as well as many countries.
Esther worked as a medical technologist in Portland and as a statistician in Oak Ridge, Tenn. during World War II. She enjoyed a teaching career as a mathematics instructor at the University of Oregon, Ohio State University and Columbia Basin College.
Survivors include three married sons and seven grandchildren: Tom, Dyann, Michael and Natalie of Portland; Bill, Wilma, Darren and Marie of Olympia; Richard, Roxanne, Kendra, Trevor and Ryan of Maple Valley. She is also survived by two brothers, George Finsand of Vancouver, Wash. and Omar Finsand, Walnut Creek, Calif., and three sisters: Frances Groff, Richmond, B.C., l1a Horn, San Jose, Calif., Lillian Fleming, Vancouver, B.C. and 23 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Alfred Finsand, and her sisters Olive Leander and Myrtle Moscrip.
Esther was a member of Central United Protestant Church, Meadow Springs Country Club, Clover Island Yacht Club and the Sons of Norway.
A memorial service will be held Nov. 10 at 2pm at Central United Protestant Church, 1124 Stevens Drive Richland, Washington. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations to the Mid Columbia, Symphony, the Richland Library or Hospice.

Judith Eileen Atterberry
November 15, 1950 - October 27, 2002

Judith Eileen Atterberry, 50, passed away Sunday, October 27, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare in Pasco, Washington.
She was born November 15, 1951, in Richland, Washington to Walter E. and Ethel L. Atterberry. Judy was injured during her birth so was handicapped all her life. She grew up in Benton City, Washington. Although she could not walk or talk and was mentally challenged, Judy had a sweet disposition and a ready smile for anyone around her. She taught us a life lesson of acceptance for others who were disabled or different in some way.
Judy was preceded in death by her father in 1958, her mother in July, 2002, a sister, Betty Jane, and half-sister, Jeanine. She is survived by sisters, Joanne Hess and husband, Jack, Janice Slack and husband, Ed; brothers, James Atterberry, Joe Atterberry, Jerry Atterberry and wife, Louise.
Private graveside services are planned for Monday, November 4, 2002, in Benton City.

Evelyn Lyrena Armbruster
July 03, 1915 - September 15, 2002

Evelyn Lyrena Armbruster, 87, of Richland, Washington died Sunday, September 15, 2002, at Kadlec Medical Center. She was born July 3, 1915, in Harding County, South Dakota and had lived in Richland 3 months.
Evelyn was a Pasco resident from 1937 to 1956, while married to Jacob Jacobsen. She moved on to Arizona, then to California, spending most of that time in Southern California.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She was a good, Christian woman; always active in her church. She taught Sunday School, was involved in an Adult Sunday School Class called “Twigbenders”, Methodist Women’s Circles and Bible study groups and M.Y.F. As her children grew, she involved herself in their Christian upbringing through youth fellowship. She participated in Crusillo (walk to Emmaus).
She was active in the Grange, Girl Scouts, PTA, and she was a member the Moose Lodge. She volunteered at Lanterman Developmental Center in Pomona, CA.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter, E. Joyce Crust of Federal Way, WA; son, Donald R. “Jake” Jacobsen, Sr. (Adrienne) of West Richland, WA; grandchildren, Lonni Joy Dewsnups (Paul) of Murray, UT, Steven C. Crust (Helen) of Des Moines, WA, Donald R. Jacobsen, Jr. (Connie) of Kennewick, WA, Dan R. Jacobsen (Ginny) of Kennewick, WA, and Dianne R. Gillespie (Gavin) of Ferndale, WA; and 15 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 5 siblings and 1 grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 21, 2002, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 1322 Kimball Ave., Richland, WA.
Memorial contributions may be made in Evelyn’s memory to the American Heart Association, 805 S. Auburn, Kennewick, WA 99336.

Lynn Keith Atwood
November 23, 1949 - August 25, 2002

Lynn Keith Atwood, 52, of Pasco, WA was born November 23, 1949 and died unexpectedly on August 25, 2002 in Richland, WA.
Lynn grew up in Richland, Benton City and Connell. He graduated from Connell High School and WSU. He taught junior high English and coached for 2 years and spent 3 years in the U. S. Army (Military Police).
Lynn worked on the Hanford site for 20+ years as Security Specialist, Shift Manager, Operations Specialist, and Technical Editor. But Lynn’s “real” job was fishing for Salmon, Steelhead and Walleye on the Columbia River. He never had trouble getting up at 2 or 3 in the morning to go fishing.
He had a great love for all animals, and some thought he liked animals better than people.
Lynn leaves behind his companion for the last 7 years, Laurie Hutton; son, Scott Atwood and wife, Shanna; son, Josh Atwood; daughter, Holly Atwood; brothers, Jim Atwood and wife, Jane, Keith Atwood and wife, Kay, Ron Atwood and wife, Cindy, Arland Atwood and wife, Sue; grandchildren, Randy and Raynne; numerous nieces and nephews; and stepmother, Marji Atwood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Keith and Venice (Horne) Atwood and brother, Kenneth Atwood.
Please join us in honoring Lynn on Friday, August 30, at 10:00 a.m. at Columbia Point park/boat launch. Bring a chair or blanket and we’ll gather to remember this wonderful man who touched so many lives.

Charles Chester Ashby
August 11, 1935 - August 16, 2002

Charles Chester Ashby, age 67 of Richland, WA formerly of Pendleton, Oregon died Friday August 16, 2002, at Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, WA.
Mr. Ashby, also known as "Chuck" was born August 11, 1935 in San Jose, California to Carl and Beatrice O'Neal Ash by. He spent his childhood in San Jose and attended schools there.
After finishing school, he fulfilled a dream of his by joining the Salvation Army where he could serve God by helping others. He married Carmelita Prothero on August 24, 1956. (They would have been married 46 years this month). They were commissioned in the Salvation Army in 1964. Their first appointment was in San Francisco, CA followed by posts in Yakima, WA Butte, MT Laramie, WY and finally in Pendleton, OR where they also ran the Exxon gas station formerly known as Just A Kiss.
Charles loved to sing; many a day you could hear singing echoing out from the bay of the gas station on Southgate. He eventually retired from the Salvation Army to stay in Pendleton so he could finish raising his family and he continued his ministry at the Irrigon Baptist Church.
Mr. Ashby would also guest sing at churches in the Pendleton area as well as ministering and singing in the Heppner and Lexington areas.
He spent the last three years in nursing homes from complications due to diabetes. Survivors include his wife Carmelita, his sons:Charlton Ashby, Charles C. Ashby, Jr., Christopher" Jay" Ashby, and Chadwick Ashby. His daughters also survive him:Charlena Ashby Haefer, Christina Ashby Harrison and Candy Ashby Dooley.
Family and friends held a private family viewing on August 18th followed by a celebration of his life. Psalms 86 and Isaiah 53.

Barbara Elizabeth Allen
March 15, 1940 - July 23, 2002

Barbara Elizabeth Allen, 62, of West Richland died at home Tuesday, July 23, 2002.
Barbara was born to Freelen and Mary Lou Cox on March 15, 1940 in Texarcana, Texas. As a young girl, Freelen and Mary Lou divorced and Barbara was then the lucky recipient of having the additional love of step-father Dale Hooks, and step-mother, Helen.
In 1955, Barbara met the man whom she would spend the rest of her life with when Billy Allen caught her eye one day at church. The two were married on May 27, 1957 and moved to El Pasco Texas following the birth of their first son, Keller Wayne. Shortly after that, they were blessed with the births of son, David Keith, and then daughter, Karen Elizabeth and they returned to Washington where they lived in Kent for several years. It was in Kent that youngest daughter, Katrina Renee, was born and their family was complete.
In 1971 the Allens moved to Pasco where they lived until 1985 when Barbara and Billy seeking warmer weather and a change of scenery moved with youngest daughter Katrina to Phoenix. Following Billy’s death in 1988, Barbara returned to the Tri-Cities where she lived until the time of her unexpected death. Barbara worked in the retail industry for over 30 years.
For everyone who knew Barbara, knows that her passion in life was her family. She is survived by father, Freelen Cox and his wife, Doris of Tenino Washington; step-father, Dale Hooks and his companion, Barbara Storey of Moses Lake, Washington; sister Mary Ann Wise of Phoenix Arizona, sister Marcella Morgan and husband Bud of Olympia Washington, and brother Lee Cox and wife Kathy of Chehalis, Washington. She is also survived by son, Kelly and wife Kathy (granddaughters, Kimberly and Kelsy) of Spokane; son Keith and wife Lori (grandsons Kolby and Kaleb) of Coeur d Alene, Idaho; daughter Karen and husband Donald Johnson (grandson Michael and granddaughters Ashley and Cheyenne) of Richland; and daughter Katrina and husband Arturo Mendoza (granddaughter Anjelica) of Richland. Her memory will also be carried on by special friend Don Fyler of Fife, Washington and her Mariner-watching, beer drinking, let’s get a bit to eat, “adopted” son, Mike Dawkins of West Richland. Barbara also leaves behind numerous and much loved nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
Welcoming her to heaven, Barbara was proceeded in death by her husband, Billy Wayne Allen, mother Mary Lou Hooks, step-mother, Helen Cox, and brother Dale “Rusty” Hooks.
A memorial service celebrating Barbara’s life will be held on August 6, 2002 at the Church of the Nazarene located at 7503 W. Court Street, Pasco at 11:00am. A private inurnment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the charity of your choice.
