Bernard “Bud” Bode

Bernard “Bud” Bode, age 87, of Lynden, died suddenly of a heart attack in Bellingham on Friday, Feb. 9, 2007.
He was one of 11 children of Gerrit and Clara (Van Schuur) Bode, born on Dec. 26, 1919. A lifetime Lynden resident, he graduated from Lynden Christian Grade School and Lynden Public High School.

Richard Bajema

Richard Bajema, age 89, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his Lynden home on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007.
The oldest of four children born to Barney and Grace (VanderWeg) Bajema, Richard was born in Lynden on Sept. 28, 1917. He grew up in Lynden and attended both Lynden Christian and Lynden public schools. After high school he worked as a carpenter and then joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941. He was stationed at McChord Air Force Base and later in Egypt and Italy. Following his service, Richard returned to Lynden.

Ronald Roessel

In the early morning of Feb. 10, 2007, Ronald Roessel fell asleep in death. He was a lifetime resident of Ferndale where he was born on July 14, 1920.
Ronald’s family arrived in Whatcom County in the 1850s and homesteaded in the Ferndale area. He was the youngest of four brothers, born to Philip and Alfaretta Roessel.

Ananda Perera

Ananda Perera went peacefully to be with the Lord whom he loved and served on Feb. 7, 2007 at his home in Lynden.
Ananda was born on July 28, 1928 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, to Albert and Lily Perera, joining a family of two brothers and three sisters. As a young man he came to the U.S. to study for the Christian ministry at Calvin College and Seminary of Grand Rapids, Mich. While there he met Edna Van Dyken of Lynden whom he married in 1957.

Marie Theodora Rambur

Marie Theodora Rambur died peacefully on Feb. 6, 2007 in Bellingham at age 89.
She was born on Jan. 6, 1918 at the Bruha Homestead, north of Baker, Mont. She was one of seven children born to her parents and was delivered at home by her father. She was reared on a cattle ranch in southeast Montana and grew up working alongside her parents, brothers and sisters, doing the daily tasks that ranch life demanded.

Katherine Anne Mitchell

Katherine Anne Mitchell, age 83, of Lynden died at St. Joseph Hospital on Friday, Feb. 9 while surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Bludow, Poland, on Jan. 14, 1924, and moved with her parents, Harry and Anne Kurylko, and family to Canada in 1930. She married Frank Mitchell, an American soldier from Houston, Texas, in Vancouver, B.C., in 1946, and in 1947 they settled in Seattle. She moved to Whatcom County in 1953 and for 20 years worked at the Harbor House Restaurant of Bellingham.

Ruth J. Hemmann

Ruth J. Hemmann went to be with her lord on Feb. 9, 2007. Although she will be greatly missed by her family and friends, she was looking forward to rejoining her mother, Helene Jurgensen, and husband, Arthur Hemmann.
Ruth was born in Bellingham on March 16, 1915. She was very involved with Trinity Lutheran Church and attended parochial school there. Following high school graduation she attended Bellingham Business College and worked for BB Furniture Company. In 1942 she married in Kearney, Neb., but then worked for the Coast Guard in Washington, D.C., until the end of World War II when her husband returned from the Army. They moved to Sumas where she has remained a resident.

Florence Marie Wick

Florence Marie Wick, age 90, of Lynden died at the Christian Health Care Center on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007.
Florence was a daughter of Thomas and Matilda (Berntson) Olson and was born in Fairdale, N.D., on Sept. 11, 1916. She grew up in North Dakota where she graduated from high school and married Melvin Wick on May 2, 1936. From North Dakota, Mel and Florence moved to Seattle where she worked for Boeing during World War II and then to Lynden in 1951. In 1961 Florence became a nurse’s aid and was employed by the Christian Health Care Center until she retired in 1991.

Mrs. Alice Glass of Lynden, and life-time county resident, died at the Christian Health Care Center on Friday, June 6. She was 89.
Alice was the daughter of Wallace and Janet (McRae) Frost and was born in the Lamola area of Eastern Whatcom County on August 31, 1913. She graduated from the former Maple Falls High School and on October 23, 1934 was married to Raymond Glass in Sumas. A home maker, Alice also worked at Kale Canning in Everson for seventeen years and then was employed as a nurse’s aid at the Christian Health Care Center in Lynden for twenty years.
Mrs. Glass was a member of the Nooksack Advent Christian Church and loved flowers, sewing, quilt making and knitting Afghans. She also took great pleasure from visiting family and friends and sending them cards and letters.
Besides her parents, Alice was preceded by her husband Raymond in 1978, grandsons Mark Linde and Shawn Glass and a sister Grace Oleson.
Mrs. Glass is survived by her daughter Janet and husband Carl Linde of Seattle; son Gerald and wife Janie Glass of Lynden; four grand and seven great-grandchildren; sister Ruth Glass of Everson and other relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Nooksack Advent Christian Church; P.O. Box 4204, Nooksack 98276 or to your favorite charity.

Darlene Divis

Darlene (Dolly VanBeek) Divis, age 68, of Hemphill, Texas, the first of nine siblings, passed away and went to be with the Lord on Jan. 23, 2007.
A daughter of Gerrit and Dorothy VanBeek, she was born in Lynden on Jan. 20, 1939. She graduated from Lynden High School in 1957. She was a member of the National Honor Society in high school and she was an excellent musician. Her instrument of choice was the steel guitar, which she often played in church. She made profession of faith at First Reformed Church of Lynden.

Wilma Agnes VanDerVeen

Wilma Agnes VanDerVeen, age 82, went to be with her Lord and Savior peacefully in her sleep on Sunday morning, March 25, 2007 at the Christian Health Care Center.
Wilma was born on June 24, 1924 to Charles and Jennie (Bakker) Sybesma in Bellflower, Calif. On Feb. 23, 1943, she married Hans VanDerVeen Jr. in Artesia, Calif. In the spring of 1949 they moved to Washington and settled on a dairy farm east of Sumas where together they worked and raised their family. A devoted homemaker, she was also a charter member of Lynden Fellowship Reformed Church.

Marie M. Reed

Marie M. Reed, 98, of Bellingham passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2007. She was born Oct. 8, 1908, to Jim and Maude (Lipscomb) Glassburn and spent her life in Whatcom County, graduating from Ferndale High School in 1927.
She is preceded in death by her husband Bud Reed (1972), brothers Archie, Elmer and Harold, sister LaVurn Younger, newphew Ron and nieces Neva, Vernie and LaVurn.

Estelle Kinmonth

Estelle Irene Kinmonth of Lynden passed away on Friday, March 23, 2007. “Kady” was 87 years old and will be missed by her two children, Allison and Robin.
The Kinmonth family is being served through Moles Family Funeral Home & Cremation, Lynden.

Albert J. VanderVeen

Albert J. VanderVeen, born in Bow on Dec. 27, 1932 to Albert and Gertrude (VanderVate) VanderVeen, passed away at St. Joseph Hospital on Friday, March 16, 2007 at the age of 74.
Albert moved to Whatcom County in 1939 where he attended Lynden Christian Schools. He married Sonia Stremler in 1953. He served two years in the military and farmed a dairy north of Lynden for 23 years. Albert then became a salesman at Farmers Equipment where he worked until retirement. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, all sports and volunteering at Third Christian Reformed Church and Lynden Christian Schools.

Hilda E. Bajema

Hilda E. Bajema, 93, environmental activist, homemaker, school teacher, research chemist and long-time resident of Whatcom County, died at Highland Convalescent Center of Bellingham on March 17, 2007.
Hilda was born to Hattie (Sargent) and Waldo P. Gellerson on Nov. 27, 1913 in Island Falls, Maine. After graduating from Island Falls High School, she attended Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, where she received her undergraduate degree in 1935.She taught school in East Plantation, Monticello, Farmington and Island Falls, Maine, as well as chemistry and physics in a secondary school in Willimantic, Conn. In 1948 she received a master’s degree in organic chemistry from Radcliffe College and worked on synthesizing morphine in a research lab at Smith College.

John Bosman

John Bosman, age 91, of Lynden went to be with his Lord while surrounded by his family on Friday, March 16, 2007.
John was a son of John and Alice (Hendricks) Bosman, born in Lynden on Dec. 28, 1915. He attended Lynden Christian Schools and on Nov. 21, 1940 married Hilda Staal in Lynden. Together they operated a dairy farm on the Kamm Road and then in 1959 moved to the Beebe Road and farmed there until 1970.

John H. Van Dalen

John H. Van Dalen, age 89, of Lynden went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, March 14, 2007.
Born and baptized Jan Hendrick Van Dalen on Oct. 18, 1917 in Bejou, Minn., in Mahnomen County to John and Anna (Jansen) Van Dalen, he moved with his family to Lynden via the Canadian Pacific Railroad in November 1925. John attended Lynden Christian Schools through the ninth grade.

Raymond “Ray” W. Bice

Raymond “Ray” W. Bice, age 81, of Bellingham passed away at Stafholt Good Samaritan Center of Blaine on Wednesday, March 14, 2007.
He was born on Nov. 21, 1925 in Bellingham to William and Julina (Breidford) Bice and was raised on the family farm on Highway 99 between Custer and Blaine. Ray attended both Custer and Blaine schools. He served in the U.S. Army from January 1952 to January 1954 during the Korean War. Ray was stationed near Seoul, Korea, for 11 months as an airplane mechanic and was honorably discharged as a technical sergeant.

Lester Hathaway

Lester Zane Hathaway, age 85, of Nooksack, died at his home on March 12, 2007 while surrounded by his family.
He was born in Caldwell, Idaho, in 1921, but upon losing his parents at 4 years of age was adopted and raised by his grandparents, George and Nellie Hathaway, on a farm on the Klickitat River in Klickitat, Wash. He graduated from Lyle High School in 1940 where he enjoyed playing baseball and was captain of the baseball team.

Paul Bajema

Paul M. Bajema, 88, originally of Lynden, passed away in Yorba Linda, Calif., where he lived, on March 7, 2007.
Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, March 23, at Vineyard Church, 5340 E. LaPalma Ave., Anaheim, Calif., 92807, phone number (714) 777-4777.

Norma Jean Gates

Norma Jean Gates departed this world on Sunday, May 13, 2007.
She was born on Feb. 2, 1924 in Heber Springs, Ark., to William Emanuel Hall and Helen Mozelle Allison Hall. Jean lived on a farm and attended her first five years of grade school at Valley View Special School. Then her family moved to Liffy, Ark., where Jean’s father worked in a gravel yard. There Jean finished eighth grade in a one-room school at Snell, Ark.

Robert John (Bob) Roosendaal

Robert John (Bob) Roosendaal, age 66, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, May 12, 2007.
He was born on Aug. 18, 1940 to John and Anna (Brouwer) Roosendaal in the family home in Lynden. Bob lived in Lynden his entire life. He married Liz Buma in 1960 and was a charter member of Good Shepherd Community Church. He was employed by Lynden Sheet Metal for 47 years.

Chuck VanBeek

Chuck VanBeek, age 80, was suddenly taken to his loving heavenly Father at his Lynden home on Monday, May 7, 2007.
A son of Frederick and Hattie (Hoogeboom) VanBeek, Chuck was born in Esteline, S.D., on May 2, 1927. The family moved to Volga, S.D., when Chuck was in the eighth grade. Rather than attend high school, he worked with his dad on the family farm until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1951. Just prior to joining the Navy, Chuck met Norma Brink and they married in Edgerton, Minn., on Sept. 3, 1953.

Martin Ronald Bessette

On May 10, 2007 Martin Ronald Bessette, beloved father of two, passed away suddenly at his Lynden home. He was born on June 22, 1959 in Tacoma.
Martin leaves behind his two sons, Garrett and Taylor, who also live in Lynden. His sons were the light of his life and he enjoyed being with them all the time. Martin enjoyed the outdoors and had great pleasure in being able to coach his boys while they were growing up.

Geraldine Mironoff

Geraldine Evelyn Price Mironoff passed away in White Rock, B.C., on Monday, May 7, 2007.
She was born on April 26, 1932 in Lynden to Herman and Florence (Dahlquist) Felkey. Gerry lived the first half of her life in Lynden raising a family and working in many local Lynden businesses. The second half of her life she very happily lived in Birch Bay and the Lower Mainland, B.C., married to her beloved husband, Victor. Gerry was a very kind, patient and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and her family and friends will fondly remember her.
