Lyman `Pug' Macklin Jr.

Aug. 13, 1933 -- Oct. 29, 2002

Former Peninsula resident Lyman ``Pug" Macklin Jr. died in his Hazelton, Idaho, home following a short battle with cancer. He was 69.

He was born to Lyman F. and Velma M. (Norris) Macklin, in Colorado Springs, Colo.

In 1949, Mr. Macklin joined the National Guard, in which he served one year before entering the Navy in 1950. During four years of active duty, Mr. Macklin spent two years aboard an aircraft carrier in Korea.

After discharge, he and his brother, Bill, traveled as country-western musicians.

Of 50 years working as a welder, 20 were spent in Port Angeles and Clallam Bay.

Mr. Macklin loved to hunt, fish and build model airplanes and ships out of aluminum cans. He also enjoyed woodworking with cedar and writing poetry.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, the former Janet McCaslin, whom he married Aug. 20, 1960; sons Richard Glenn McCaslin of Olympia, Russell Caryle McCaslin of Hoquiam, Lonny Gene McCaslin of Port Angeles, William E. Macklin of Hollywood, Fla., Robert Scott Macklin of Hazelton, Idaho, and Edward Leon Macklin of Bacliff, Texas; sister Doris Enola Kelly of San Marcos, Calif.; 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers Richard L. Macklin and William ``Bill" Macklin.

Services: Memorial was held Nov. 4 in Valley Assembly of God Church, Hazelton, Idaho, with Pastor Kevin Anderson officiating and Lee Flora American Legion Post offering military rites. Cremation was under the direction of White Mortuary's Chapel by the Park, Twin Falls, Idaho.

Dorothy R. Riecke

June 24, 1929 -- Nov. 7, 2002

Port Townsend resident Dorothy Roberta Riecke died of cardiac arrest in Swedish Hospital, Seattle. She was 73.

Born in Dabob to Carl Julian and Florence (Guthrie) Johnson, she was the eldest of nine children and helped to raise her younger siblings.

She attended school in Quilcene. In 1945 she and her family moved to Port Townsend, where she was employed at Olympic Laundry.

In 1946, she met Army Sgt. James M. Riecke, who was stationed at Fort Worden. They married in Port Townsend on Feb. 3, 1947.

After being stationed in Yuma, Ariz., for a short time, the couple returned to Port Townsend to raise their family. During this time, she was employed 30 years at St. John's Hospital (later, Jefferson General Hospital).

Mrs. Riecke enjoyed her flower gardens and bird feeders as well as daily walks in Fort Worden State Park and traveling with her husband.

Survivors, all of Port Townsend, include her husband; daughters and sons-in-law Cecelia and Scott Knoph, Jane and Skip Storm, Marilou and Patrick J. Sullivan, and Dolly and Richard Stahl; and brothers John S. Johnson and Roger Johnson. Other survivors are brother Benjamin Johnson of Chehalis; sister Leona Martin of Everett; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: Monday, Nov. 11, from 4 to 6 p.m., visitation in Kosec Funeral Home, 1615 Parkside Drive, Port Townsend, immediately preceding 6 p.m. Rosary; Tuesday, Nov. 12, at noon, funeral Mass in St. Mary Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, 1335 Blaine St., Port Townsend.

Memorials: Jefferson County Hospital Guild's Dorothy Hunt Endowment Fund for Jefferson County children using Children's Hospital in Seattle, c/o Shari Carter, 927 Benton St., Port Townsend, WA 98368.

Rosina Frances Woods

May 28, 1903 -- Nov. 5, 2002

Sequim resident Rosina Frances Woods died in Olympic Care and Rehabilitation Center at age 99.

She was born to Charles Leroy and Janet (Reid) Cooper in a log cabin on a 160-acre ranch east of Grand Rapids, Mich.

In 1976, she moved from Lakeport, Calif., to Sequim.

Mrs. Woods' many interests, included reading and air travel, beachcombing and making jewelry from rocks, and corresponding with friends.

Her husband, Ted H. Woods, died Jan. 18, 1982.

She is survived by daughter Jeanette Davidson of Lakeport, Calif., and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four children.

Services: None. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge.

Gale Elwood Snell

May 21, 1917 -- Nov. 6, 2002

Port Angeles resident Gale Elwood Snell died of cardiomopathy at age 85.

He was born in Kensett, Iowa, to George H. and Cora E. (Boutelle) Snell and spent his childhood in Mason City, Iowa. In school, he was president of his class and played on state championship teams in baseball and basketball.

He received a bachelor's degree from Purdue University in mechanical engineering as well as bachelor's and master's degrees in aeronautical engineering.

He married Ann Marguerite Dorr in Ames, Iowa, on March 19, 1942.

Mr. Snell served in the Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1946. He then became a career Air Force officer, serving in 13 states and four foreign countries before retiring in 1969 as a colonel.

He was a member of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, Gamma Alpha Rho Aeronautical Science Society and Pi Tau Sigma Mechanical Engineering Society.

In addition to being a pilot and affiliated with Boy Scouts of America, he was a fisherman and hunter.

Mr. Snell's survivors include his wife of 60 years; sons Gary of Denver, Colo., Jeffrey of Vashon and Christian of Redondo Beach, Calif.; daughter Kaylen Bailey of Santa Cruz, Calif.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by brothers Elwin and Claude.

Fred J. Crist

Feb. 24, 1914 -- Nov. 9, 2002

Port Angeles resident Fred J. Crist died in his home at the age of 88.

He was born in West Plains, Colo., to Thomas Cornelius and Grace Edla (Rieke) Crist.

On Jan. 13, 1935, he married Leonore Watson in Eckley, Colo.

Mr. Crist moved to Washington in April 1999.

He was an office manager with Southern Pacific Railroad for 43 years, retiring in 1979. He worked for Service Master as an equipment repairman from 1981 to 1998.

A devout Christian, Mr. Crist taught 2½-year-olds to 5-year-olds in Sunday School for over 30 years. His family remembers him as a very loving and caring man.

Mr. Crist was well read and enjoyed electronics and computers. He belonged to Eastern Hills Community Church and was a former member of Kiwanis.

Survivors include his wife at home; son Richard W. Crist of Bothell; daughter Evelyn L. Brown of Port Angeles; brother Robert E. Crist of San Diego; sister Lucille Fuesz of Haxton, Colo.; and 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by son Kenneth L. Crist.

Services: Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. visitation at Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles; Thursday, Nov. 14, 11 a.m. memorial at Eastern Hill's Community Church, 81 Savannah Lane, Sequim, Pastor Mark Weatherford officiating. Burial will be at Mount Angeles Memorial Park.

Marguerite Fernandes

Jan. 28, 1918 -- Nov. 7, 2002

Lifelong Port Townsend resident Marguerite Fernandes died in Kah Tai Care Center of congestive heart failure. She was 84.

The daughter of Frank and Angel (Freitas) Martin, she married Edwin Higdon, with whom she had four children but divorced after World War II. On April 27, 1946, she married Carl Fernandes; he died Dec. 19, 1973.

Mrs. Fernandes loved her garden and her home, where she prepared holiday dinners ``fit for a king." She also had an interest in fishing and reading and was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church.

Her survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Edwin and Jeanette Higdon of Beaverton, Ore.; Robert ``Bob" and Jan Higdon of Port Townsend; Don and Veronika Fernandes of Tumwater; and Michael and Becky Fernandes of Port Hadlock. Also daughters and sons-in-law Marguerite and Gene Bishop of Port Townsend; Jacqueline ``Jackie" and Don Gillett of Reedsport, Ore.; and sister Jacqueline Spindor, as well as 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Carl, Mrs. Fernandes was preceded in death by brothers Ray, Donald and Clarence Martin and sister Mabel Martin.

Services: At a later time, Celebration of Life. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements. There was a memorial Mass on Nov. 8 at Kah Tai Care Center.

Harlan Page McNutt Jr.

Aug. 31, 1914 -- Nov. 9, 2002

Dr. Harlan Page McNutt Jr. died in Port Angeles of heart failure. He was 88.

Born in Port Angeles to Harlan Page and Ina Mae (Agnew) McNutt Sr., he took pre-medical training at St. Martin's College, University of Washington and Central Washington University. He then taught for one year at Washington Elementary School and, in 1943, obtained his medical degree from George Washington University.

Between 1944-46, Dr. McNutt was a captain on active duty with the Army Medical Corps. He served in DeWitt General Hospital, Auburn, Calif.

Dr. McNutt then pursued specialty training in neuro-psychiatry, mental health and public health at DeWitt General Hospital and Bellevue Hospital. In 1948, he earned his master's degree in public health at Johns Hopkins University, with additional training at New York Psychiatric Institute and Columbia University. He completed his senior residency in psychiatry at Western State Hospital in 1951 and, from 1952 to 1968, was in private psychiatric practice in Tacoma.

From 1968 to 1977, Dr. McNutt was director of health for Tacoma-Pierce County and, under Gov. Dixie Lee Ray from 1977 to 1979, was secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services at Olympia.

Before retiring, Dr. McNutt, who was a member of the American Medical Association, completed his career in psychiatry at a private hospital in Menlo Park., Calif., then at Oregon State Hospital in Salem.

He had an keen interest in local history and was the last surviving member of the ``Lady of the Lake" autopsy team in Clallam County. He also restored both the first car in the county and an early Port Angeles fire engine, which is now displayed by the Port Angeles Fire Department.

Dr. McNutt greatly enjoyed travel and, in 1971, conducted a personal expedition to search for the Tonquin, a Pacific Fur Co. ship lost in 1912.

Dr. McNutt also appreciated good literature, fine arts and gourmet cooking.

Dr. McNutt's survivors, all of Port Angeles, include sister-in-law E. Leona McNutt; nephews (and spouses) John (Dava) McNutt and Fred (Sharyn) Balser; and niece (and spouse) Nancy (Leslie) Samples.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Oscar C. McNutt.

Services: At his request, none, although a gathering of family and friends is being planned for a later time. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home is in charge.

Lucas Ira Palmer

Nov. 6, 2002 -- Nov. 6, 2002

Prematurely born Lucas Ira Palmer of Port Townsend died in Seattle.

The son of Joshua Ira and Amy Sue (Fields) Palmer, he is survived by sister Bailey Lynn Fields-Palmer and grandparents Mike and Lorie Fields and Aubrey and Carol Palmer.

Services: Private ceremony with Jeff Porter officiating; burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Chimacum. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge.

Seth Clinton Perka

May 29, 1977 -- Nov. 4, 2002

Lifelong Port Townsend resident Seth Clinton Perka died at age 25.

The son of William ``Bill" and Janet (Shaver) Perka, his adventuresome spirit took him to Alaska, Canada, Mexico and Costa Rica and his love of the sea led him into commercial fishing. He was also a ``natural" with landscape design, at which he worked in Port Townsend.

Mr. Perka had a close bond with his dog, Sugar Ray, a black boxer adopted from the pound many years ago.

He is survived by his father; his mother and her companion Patrick Merriman; brothers Erik and Zachary Perka; and grandparents Helen Perka and Clinton and Dorothy Shaver.

Services: Private service on Nov. 10. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Choice of community youth programs. Please, no flowers.

Sylvia Julia Evans

June 14, 1913 -- Nov. 10, 2002

Sylvia Julia Evans died in Port Angeles at age 89 of breast cancer.

Born to Thomas and Elisa (Simila) Jussila in Crego Hill, where she grew up, she married Everett Evans on Feb. 14, 1932, in Prosser.

She had a lifelong interest in nutrition, and while living in Sequim and Port Angeles from the 1930s into the 1970s, owned and operated a health food store on First Street.

From Clallam County, she moved to Grandview and Winlock.

In September, she returned to Port Angeles to live with her son.

Mrs. Evans was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church and taught Sunday school for many years.

Survivors include her husband; son Everett ``Lee" Evans of Port Angeles; daughter Dorriene Niedenfuer of Laguna Woods, Calif.; brother Leo Jussila of Pe Ell; seven grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: Saturday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m., graveside in Claquato Cemetery, Chehalis, preceding the 3 p.m. memorial in Bethel Assembly of God Church, 132 Kirkland Road, Chehalis. Cattermole Funeral Home Inc., Winlock, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Bethany Pentecostal Church, 508 S. Francis St., Port Angeles, WA 98362; and Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Maxwell `Max' Simmons

Feb. 1, 1926 -- Nov. 9, 2002

Joyce resident Maxwell ``Max" Simmons died in his home at age 76.

He was the third of four sons born to Anson and Hazel (Birge) Simmons in Ingersoll, Ontario.

When he was an infant, his family moved to Southern California and then to Oroville, Calif., where he graduated from high school.

Mr. Simmons joined the Canadian armed forces in 1944, and served until the end of World War II.

He owned a fleet of logging trucks in Northern California before establishing a produce business. Between 1965 and 1972, he lived in Port Angeles, where he worked as a produce manager for West Dependable Grocery Store and owned a wholesale produce business and Paradise Market.

After moving to Oregon in 1973, Mr. Simmons established Pedro's, a Mexican restaurant, which he franchised in Albany, Lebanon, Salem, Corvallis and Eugene.

Mr. Simmons was a devoted Christian, whose pastimes included carpentry, camping, reading and gardening.

His retirement years were divided between Albany, Ore., and Port Angeles.

In June 1952, he married Darlene Helland in Reno, Nev.; they divorced in 1982.

On Aug. 29, 1998, he married Beverly (McNally) Porter in Joyce Bible Church; she survives at the family home.

Other survivors are sons Randy of Port Angeles and Greg and Rob, both of Albany, Ore.; daughters Debbie Howard of Canby, Ore., Angie Byrd of Lebanon, Ore., and Tammi Wirth of Albany, Ore.; brothers Albert Simmons of Gridley, Calif., and Hilton Simmons of Oroville, Calif.; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brother Larry Simmons.

Services: Saturday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m., memorial in Joyce Bible Church, 50470 Highway 112, with Pastor Mel Wilson officiating. A reception will follow. Private family inurnment will be in Port Crescent Pioneer Memorial Cemetery. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.
