Robert Heinemann

Robert B. Heinemann, 79, of Edmonds, formerly of Federal Way and Mukilteo, died Saturday, May 24th, 2003, of kidney failure at Evergreen Hospice Center in Kirkland. He died as he lived, on his own terms with quiet dignity and respect. His loving family was at his side and will miss him tremendously.

Bob was the fourth of five children born to and raised by Henry and Katherine Heinemann in Ritzville, Washington. He graduated from Ritzville High School in 1942. In 1944, Robert joined the Air Force, which marked the beginning of his lifelong passion with flight and aeronautics. A decorated World War II veteran, Bob was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart for his courageous efforts of "Operation Varsity" in Germany. After the war, he studied mechanical engineering at the University of Washington. In 1949, Bob met and married his life love and partner, June Buswell. They raised three children; Eric, Julie & Jeff. Every day of their lives together, Bob was a kind, caring husband and father.

Bob joined The Boeing Company in 1951. He approached each day with the commitment and dedication he gave all things that mattered to him. Bob retired after 36 years, in 1987.

June retired in 1987 as well and they traveled much of the time. Their retirement years were as rich as the ones that preceded them, filled with those things that give life meaning. They joined the faithful, vocal, fans at all of their grandchildren's' many sporting events. Bob defined the word "grandpa." His unwavering support of each of his grandkids was as integral to them as it was to his children.

Always an engineer, he tried for years to outwit the squirrels and mountain beavers in their Mukilteo backyard. He continued to fly, towing gliders as a hobby, until heart surgery in 1995 prevented it. Bob enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting. By nature outgoing, Bob had a great sense of humor and was a gifted listener. People loved to talk to him, sensing his genuine interest in what they might have to say. His poker group of 50 years still meets monthly (although they don't stay out as late or smoke cigars). Bob generously volunteered at the Carol Rowe Memorial Food Bank at the Edmonds United Methodist Church.

Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, June; and their children Eric (Jan) Heinemann, Julie (Steve) Frank and Jeff (Kim) Heinemann. He leaves 11 grandchildren; Brett (Stacy), Todd, Kyle, Heidi (Sean), Melanie, Lori, Brian, Chad (Michelle), Kent, Garrett and Gavin. He also is survived by a brother, Richard, of Rosalia; a sister, June O'Neal, of Silverdale; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Services will be held at the Edmonds United Methodist Church at 828 Caspers Street in Edmonds on Monday, June 2nd, at 1:00, with a reception there immediately following. Interment will be at a later date at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to either the Edmonds United Methodist Church Food Bank, 828 Caspers Street, Edmonds WA 98020; or Evergreen Hospice Center, 12822 124th Lane NE, Kirkland WA 98034.

The family would like to thank the remarkable staff at both the Puget Sound Kidney Center in Mountlake Terrace and the Evergreen Hospice Center in Kirkland for their gentle, sensitive care.

When hugging goodbye, Bob often jokingly said, "Glad you could see me." To our husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend .... "We are glad we could see you, too. Thank you."
