Josephine Renkert Phillips

Josephine Renkert Phillips, age 95, of Everett, WA, passed away April 27, 2004.

She was born May 17, 1909. She graduated from Everett High School in 1927.

She leaves two daughters, Dolores Berlin and husband Charlie and Sharon Dunmire and husband Bob; grandchildren, Cathy Berlin and husband Stan Albin, Shanley Dunmire and husband Zane Signs; great grandchildren, Annie Hots and Charlie J. Berlin.

Josephine was preceded in death by her husband Boyd in 1972 and grandson Steve in 2000. Josephine was the last surviving child, having been preceded in death by her five brothers.

A special thanks to caregivers, Tina, Jennifer and Lois of Taylormade Care and also to the caregivers of Hospice.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, May 1st at Evergreen Cemetery, Everett. Visitation will be held at Solie Funeral Home on Friday, April 30th from 12:00noon until 6:00pm.

Marion Lavonne Anderson

Marion Lavonne Anderson, 71, passed away April 25, 2004 in Hamilton, MT.

A memorial will be held on Saturday, May 1st on 1:00pm at the Everett Eagles.

Marie Dawn Gilstrap

Marie Dawn Gilstrap, born to Ida E. and William L. Fox in Veblen, SD, passed over at her home in Edmonds on April 24, 2004 after a long fight with breast cancer. She has been a resident of Edmonds since her family moved here January 1, 1957.

She leaves behind her husband of nearly 57 years, Walter C. Gilstrap, 2 daughters; Crystal Smith and C. Anne Sunday, 1 son, Alvin L. Gladwin, her older sister Berma G. Felton, 9 grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many wonderful friends.

In 1953, Marie became a foster parent caring for newborns until they were adopted. In 1957, she was awarded "Mother of The Year" by the Washington Children's Home Society. In 1961 she stopped foster-caring and began day-care and continued until she retired in 1982. In early to mid 60's she was with the Independent Order of Forresters and she was a Junior Court Mother once and Senior Court Mother once.

It was Marie's wishes to be cremated with no fussing about her. Just remember her as she was throughout her life. So her family had a "Happy Birthday Everyone" pre-memorial gathering while she was able to enjoy it and able to say good-bye to her loved ones.

No further services are planned by the family at this time.

Merle LaVenne Steinman Sr.

Mar. 29, 1930-April 26, 2004

Merle LaVerne Steinman Sr. passed away peacefully at home on April 26, 2004 at the age of 74.

Merle is survived by his wife Viola; sons Merle (Mick) Steinman Jr. (Andrea); Dennis Steinman; Ronald Steinman (Paula); daughter Debra Steinman Bennett (Jim); sisters Ruth Kuhia; Norma Krueger; and grandchildren Cory Steinman; Tara Anderson; Matt Steinman; Tyler Steinman; Kathryn Bennett; Alex Bennett and Jamie Steinman.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents Alva and Bessie and his brother Dewayne.

Merle was born March 29, 1930 in Seattle to Alva and Bessie Steinman. He grew up in Alderwood Manor and graduated from Everett High School in 1948. He met Viola Sund in 1949 and they were married on April 15, 1950 in Shoreline. They built their family home in Shoreline shortly after and spent 54 wonderful years there together, raising their four children and building a family business which involves all of his family members to this day.

Merle was a visionary in the construction and real estate development business. His projects were many and always were on the front edge of development trends. His last major project was the construction and operation of Boulevard Park Place Senior Residential Community. He and his family have spent many hours enjoying the company and fellowship of the 200 or so residents within that community.

Merle spent eight years in the US Naval Air Reserve from 1949 to 1957. He was a volunteer firefighter in the Shoreline Fire District for over 30 years, retiring in 1981. He was a charter member of the Lynnwood Elks Lodge #2171 and has been active in the club for over 45 years. Merle enjoyed spending weekends with friends and family at Lake Cavanaugh.

Services will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at Purdy & Walters at Floral Hills Lynnwood at 11:00am. The Memorial will be held at Lynnwood Elks at 1:00pm, 6620 196th SW, by Sno-King Ice Arena.

In lieu of flowers, send remembrances to Tall Elks Children Fund or your favorite charity.

Bernice Mary West

July 3, 1920 - April 27, 2004
The angels sung and summoned her away; she passed away peacefully at home. She was surrounded by her loving family. She is loved, cherished and will be missed deeply.

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband William J. West.

She leaves behind her seven children, Darrel West of Everett, WA, Kenneth West of Clayton, WA, Linda Cook of Moses Lake, WA, Richard West of Clayton, WA, James West of Houston, TX, Sharon Johnston of Lake Stevens, WA, and Gail Crandall of Stanwood, WA; 15 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and sister Margaret Ehlke of Enumclaw, WA.

The Memorial Service was held in Lake Stevens.

Donald Leslie Peach

Donald Leslie Peach, 79, of Everett passed away April 29, 2004.

Donald was born October 17, 1924 in St. Peter's, MN to James and Effie Peach.

Donald joined the United States Army and served in World War II. He was a member of the 25th Infantry Division Association (Tropic Lightning) since 1946 and a member of the VFW Post # 2100 and NA LC Local 791 from 1957-1985. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian; daughters, Lonnie M. Andre and Lora (Brian) Brubeck; grandson, Jason (Erin) Camp-bell; great granddaughter, Lillian Campbell and great grandson, Brandon Campbell, all of the Everett area; and brother and sister-in-law, Delbert and Mary Peach, of Leavenworth, WA.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 5, 2004 at 1:00pm at Purdy & Walters with Cassidy Funeral Home, 1702 Pacific Ave, Everett. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 4, 2004 from 10:00am until 5:00pm at the funeral home. Interment will be at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, Everett, WA.

Eleanor Lois Nazarenus

Eleanor Lois Nazarenus died Monday, April 26, 2004.

She was born in Seattle, WA on March 10, 1918, the eldest child of Bismark H. and Rossea M. Nazarenus. She was a graduate of Cascade Elementary School and Broadway High Schools. After earning her Bachelor's Degree at the University of Washington, she went on to complete a Masters Degree at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. She also graduated from Garrett Bible Institute, Evanston, IL and was ordained as a Methodist minister. She was pastor to three churches in Nebraska. She later retired from the ministry and earned teaching credentials and taught Honors English at Everett High School until retiring in 1982. She was a member of the honorary teacher's sorority, Pi Lambda Theta. Her interest in education continued after retirement with her funding of the Eleanor Nazarenus - Nelson Mandela Scholarships at Seattle Central College and the Eleanor Nazarenus Scholarships at Seattle Pacific University.

Eleanor is survived by her sisters, Louise Hines, Grace (Adrian) Kruller, and Janet (Domenick) Bertelli; and a brother Joel (Doris) Nazarenus. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by sister Doris Bundy and brother Carl Nazarenus.

Arrangements have been handled by Acacia Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 14951 Bothell Way NE, Seattle, WA 98155. At Eleanor's request, a simple family graveside service will be held.

Any memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church, Seattle, for use in the youth camping program at Camp Indianola, WA.

Ethel Lucille Lawlis

Ethel Lucille Lawlis, 75, born in DeSmet, SD on February 22, 1929 passed away on April 28, 2004 after a brief battle with cancer.

Ethel loved spending time with her family and grandchildren and enjoyed weekly cards with her sisters and friends. Her home was her pride and joy and she loved to entertain. Ethel took great pride in her yard and received the Monte Cristo Award in 2003. She was an avid Mariner fan and loved Friday night games and dinner with her daughter and son-in-law. Ethel will always be remembered as "a servant to all".

She is survived by her mother Evelyn Morrison; daughter, Karen (Paul) Bartlow; siblings, Doris Scoleri, Marilyn Lowe, Madelyn Hansen, Carol Danner, Dean Morrison and Gene Morrison; grandchildren, Rob Keene, Nicole Haglund and Traci Houston; great grandchildren, Baylee Henke, Jaquelin Haglund, Jackson Houston, Gabriel Haglund and Baby Keene; and step-children Jim Lawlis, Mark Lawlis and Suzie Albin.

A special thank you to all the nurses and caregivers on the 6th floor of the Transitional Care Unit for the outstanding love and care given to my mother. Also a huge thank you to Dr. Cole, Dr. Stephens and Dr. Chow; you are the best. Thank you to my co-workers and customers at Claremont QFC for all their love and support for me and my mother.

There will be a private inurnment and a gathering with family and friends at a future date.

Carl J. Hemstrom

Carl J. Hemstrom, 83, life time resident of Granite Falls, WA died at home on April 29, 2004.

Memorial services to be announced at a later date.

Arrangements under the care of Funeral Alternatives of Snohomish County.

Diane Nelson

Diane Nelson of Seattle, WA passed away April 27, 2004 after an extended illness courageously fought.

Diane was born October 30, 1948 to Fred and Ann Nelson. She went to school in Port Angeles and Everett, graduating from Cascade High School. Diane attended University of Washington and lived in Seattle many years. She was a unique and independent individual who was greatly appreciated and loved by her family, friends, and related children especially Azura, Kaziah, Mariah, and Kyle.

She is survived by brothers, Stuart and Brian; sister Cheryl; aunts, uncles, cousins and nephews. Also special mention to good friends, Edwina and Michael, Randy and Rienata, Ken, Ben, Tim, Lisa and many more.

She was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Ann Nelson.

There will be a simple graveside service at Cypress Lawn Cemetery, Everett, to be announced.

Evelyn F. Learman-Hall

March 10, 1907-April 25, 2004
Evelyn passed away in Seattle peacefully in the presence of her adored brother, Bill Faller. Beloved and cherished by her children, Robert, Doug (Pat) and Jim Learman, Lyn Learman Lacher (Rich), by her grandchildren Tamara Coffman (Joe) and Lynsey Lacher, and by her great grandchildren, Blake and Elizabeth Coffman and by her stepson Dick Hall (Diane) and by many nieces, nephews and cousins who were an important part of her large, extended family. Evelyn grew up in the Mt. Vernon area, attended Bellingham Normal School, received her teaching certificate and taught in the Mt. Vernon / Stanwood area for six years. She met and married her husband of 53 years, Stan Learman, and raised their four children primarily in Seattle. At the age of 79, Stan preceded her in death. At the age of 81, Evelyn married her high school sweetheart, Walter "Bud" Hall of Selah. They shared nearly 10 fun-filled, loving years together until his death in 1997.

Dearest Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister Aunt, Cousin and Friend: One of the brightest, shining lights of the world is now gone forever. But the essence of Evelyn's love, light and beauty will remain forever in our hearts.

Viewing will be held at Gilbertson's Funeral Home in Stanwood. Burial services will be held at the Fir-Conway Lutheran Cemetery by Milltown on Monday, May 3rd at 2:30pm. Family and friends are invited to attend a "Celebration of Evelyn" at her home at Juniper Beach immediately following the graveside service. Come with love and words to share....the raft will float away at 5:00pm.

Florence Edith Anderson Theiss

Florence Theiss, age 91, passed away on April 28, 2004 in Lake Stevens, WA.

She was born on July 31, 1912 in Seattle, WA to August and Amanda Anderson. She moved to the Snohomish area when she was one year old and has lived there the rest of her life. She married Albert Anderson in 1936. He preceded her in death in 1955. She married Harold Theiss in 1959. He preceded her in death in 1981.

Florence was a member of Vasa Lodge in Monroe for many years and Business Men's Club in Soap Lake.

She leaves behind two sisters, Alice Kobylk and Helen Hendrickson, both of Lake Stevens; and several nieces and nephews and great and great great nieces and nephews.

At her request there will be Graveside Services only for family and close friends. Services are scheduled for Monday, May 3, 2004 at 1:00pm at G.A.R. Cemetery in Snohomish.

Memorials may be made to Providence Hospice of Snohomish County, 2731 Wetmore Ave., Suite 500, Everett, WA 98201.

Frank Dillinger

Frank Dillinger, age 83, of Shoreline, WA, passed away on April 29, 2004.

He was born in Frenchlick, IN on September 27, 1920. Frank served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He worked as a purchasing agent for the U.S. Government for many years, he also worked as a receiving clerk for Western Optical. Frank was a member of Rock of Ages Lutheran Brethren Church of Seattle.

Mr. Dillinger is survived by his daughter, Lynn Oliver and husband David and grandson, Christopher Oliver, all of Lynnwood; sisters, G. Marie Jones, of Indianapolis, IN and Margie Stazenski, of Phoenix, AZ; and by several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A graveside service will be held at 12:30pm on Wednesday, May 5, 2004 at Evergreen Memorial Park, Seattle with a memorial service following at 2:00pm at Rock of Ages Lutheran Brethren Church, 316 N. 70th St., Seattle, 98103.

Jeff Cox

Jeff Cox, 27, of Snohomish, WA, died April 28, 2004.

Jeff was born July 9, 1976 in Seattle to Jim and Denise Cox. He was raised in the South Everett Mill Creek area and attended Woodside Elementary, Eisenhower Middle School, Cascade High School and Edmonds Community College. Jeff enjoyed soccer, baseball and later loved golf. He worked for Chaplin Motors of Bellevue for seven years.

Jeff is survived by his wife Lindsay, his beloved children, son Corey, daughters Chloe and Lily, his parents Jim and Denise Cox, brother Ryan, mother and father-in-law Larry and Marianne Thompson, and many more family and friends.

A Funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 4, 2004, 10:00am at North Creek Presbyterian Church, 621 - 164th St. SW in Mill Creek.

Memorials may be made in Jeff's name in care of his family to establish a Trust Fund for his children's College education.

Kenneth W. McClain

Kenneth W. McClain, 74, of Sequim, WA, passed away April 28, 2004 at his home in Sequim.

He was born August 12, 1929 in Yakima, WA to Delbert and Blanche (Oliver) McClain. He served in the U.S. Army from February 1951 until February 1953. Kenneth was a bus driver for Community Transit in Snohomish County for 18 years retiring on September 30, 1994. He had an excellent bus driving record and received an award for 2 million accident free miles. He lived in Everett most of his life, moving to Sequim in 1998. He was a huge John Wayne fan and a member of Eagles Aerie #483 in Port Angeles, the VFW and the American Legion.

He married Alvena Wittwer in January 1954, they divorced. He married Darla Eberle on March 27, 1980 in Everett, WA.

He is survived by his wife Darla of Sequim; sons, Mike McClain of Everett and Jake McClain of Maple Valley, WA; daughters, Julie Tate of Arlington, WA and Diane Gray of Bothell, WA; brothers, Del McClain of Leavenworth, WA, Chuck Cadieux of Seattle, Don Cadieux of Lynnwood and Bob Cadieux of Camano Island; sisters, Marlene Coats of Everett, Joyce Coleman of Seattle, Sharon Rose of Grand Coulee, WA and Pat Tieman of Yakima; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 2, 2004 at 2:00pm at the Eagles Aerie #483, 110 S. Penn Street St., Port Angeles.

Memorials can be made to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, P.O. Box 19024, Seattle, WA 98109.

Lois S. Garberg

Lois S. Garberg, 74, died on April 22, 2004.

She leaves behind son Donald M. Garberg; daughter Carol A. Garberg; three grandchildren; one great grandchild; and many loving friends.

She was born in Toppenish, WA. Resided most of her life in Battleground, Seattle and Mountlake Terrace. She devoted her life to raising her two children and was married to her loving husband, Fire Chief, Don E. Garberg, for 44 years. During her life she taught roller skating, piano, spinning wool, and knitting and spent 13 years on the Monroe Fair Board. She enjoyed traveling in her motor home, fishing and sharing quality time with her friends. She brought great joy to our lives, was a loving friend and a very giving mother and wife. She had a young spirit, to know her was to love her, and even though we weren't ready for her to leave us, we will trust she is in the arms of our Lord. She touched many lives and will be deeply missed until we meet again in heaven. Lois and Don are hand in hand, continuing the journey, together again!

At her request, there will be no services.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Lois's name be sent to the American Cancer Society and/or your local Battered Women's Center.
