Foege, David Friday, 20 Apr 2007
David William Foege was born Aug. 18, 1962, in Denver, Colo. He died on Vashon Island April 20, 2007. At age 3, he lived in an African village and began a life-long interest in other cultures. He also attended several years of school in India before graduating from high school in Atlanta, Georgia. His diverse experiences in foreign settings left him with an enduring interest in other countries, politics, nature, history and literature. His natural curiosity continued to entertain his friends and family as he could recount details from history of all periods and grasp the essentials of various philosophies and religions.
Because of his interest in Russian history and literature, he was challenged to learn Russian, and in his characteristic fashion he enrolled in Leningrad State University without knowing Russian. He learned it as he took his course work. While taking graduate work in Russian studies at the University of Washington, he began to question the contributions he would make as he narrowed his areas of interest and decided instead to pursue a teaching certificate with the thought of inspiring others to explore the world of knowledge.
David taught in the Vashon schools for the past 15 years. He found great joy in teaching and especially those moments when a student would understand a subject or would be suddenly inspired to search out, on his or her own, information beyond that required. Countless parents relate stories of a child having difficulties in school who were helped by his non-judgmental approach and encouragement.
His interests included music, writing graphic novels, kayaking, birding and outdoor activities of all types. He remains loved by his wife Jennifer, son Max, daughter Olyana, two brothers, Michael and Robert, and his parents, Paula and Bill.

Steen, Ray Wednesday, 11 Apr 2007

In retirement, he moved several times, settling in Walla Walla nine years ago. His brother Pete of Las Cruces, New Mexico, survives him.

Cynthia Keen
Cynthia Marie Keen, former Islander, was born to Bruce and Helen Keen on Nov. 24, 1956. She died suddenly on March 28, 2007.
Cindy was born in Seattle and raised in West Seattle where she attended West Seattle High, graduating in 1975, and later graduated from the University of Washington. She became a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and was awarded both a degree in English and a teaching certificate.
Cindy went on to teach at St. Benedict’s school in Seattle before pausing her career to raise her family, first her daughter Kimberly then welcoming twins Joe and Molly. Cindy was a devoted mother, using her teaching skills as she raised them to be intelligent, curious and loving individuals.
She had a big, loving heart, her family says. Whether she had just met someone — and she loved meeting people and making new friends — or had known someone for years, she would go out of her way to help or do some thoughtful gesture to brighten their day. Cindy had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed telling stories to make people laugh. Always a kid at heart, she used her creativity with gusto to decorate and cook for any and all holidays. In her spare time, she liked to garden and scrapbook.
Cindy’s mother Helen Keen died earlier. Additional survivors include her children Kimberly, Joe and Molly Aigner (Bellevue), her father Bruce Keen of Vashon and stepmother Elaine of Sammamish, her sister Catherine Keen-Conway of Port Orchard and her many close friends.
A memorial service was held at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in West Seattle on Wednesday, April 4, 2007. Private graveside services preceded the memorial on Vashon.

Galus, Catherine Mary Tuesday, 31 Aug 2004
Catherine Mary Galus died Aug. 31, 2004, after a sudden illness. She was 82 years old.

She loved her family, gardening and feeding birds.
