Esther Robbins Hutton died May 1, 2006.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at picnic shelter #4 in Lincoln Park in West Seattle overlooking Puget Sound and her home on Vashon.

Bourgault, Kirk Richell Wednesday, 26 Apr 2006
Kirk Richell Bourgault died of cancer April 26, 2006, at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee. He was 53 years old.
He was born Sept. 23, 1952, in Seattle. He attended Roosevelt High School and continued post-secondary education courses throughout his life.
Mr. Bourgault divided his time between Vashon Island, where he worked at Island Trees, and Schawana, where he had a home and embarked on his passion for winemaking.
He was a volunteer firefighter with the Royal City District 10 fire department a number of years.
Survivors include his son Orion, his brother Craig Bourgault and his mother and father.
A remembrance gathering is set for 3 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at the the Fraternal Order of Eagles. The event is a potluck.

Abramoff, Ivan Stephens Joseph Wednesday, 26 Apr 2006
IIvan Abramoff of Vashon Island died on April 13, 2006. He was a 33 years old.
Born in Seattle on Jan. 2, 1973, Mr. Abramoff moved with his family to Seaside, Ore., and then to Vashon Island, where he graduated from Vashon High School.
He worked as a crab fisherman and fished Magadan in Russia and the Bering Sea. He was also an underwater welder who did marine restoration. His most recent job was in construction.
He was an avid snowboarder and spent several months in Europe traveling and boarding.
Friends and family say Mr. Abramoff had a magical and charismatic presence that affected everyone around him. His grin was infectious; his personality was charming and his heart was steadfast. He had a close relationship with his family and his friends, toward all of whom he felt immense love and loyalty.
Survivors include his mother and father Lonnie and Warren Abramoff of Vashon; his brother Jeff Abramoff of Auburn; his sister Natasha Abramoff of Whidbey Island; his son Maxwell Abramoff of Mill Creek; uncles Mike LaPine of Bremerton and Scot LaPine, currently in Iraq; his aunts Lilly Christiansen of Kent; Dot Zigler of San Diego and Doris Godeot of Kent.
A service and celebration of Mr. Abramoff’s life was April 29 at the Vashon Youth Hostel.

Wood, Ted F. Saturday, 22 Apr 2006
Ted F. Wood, a resident in the Assisted Living apartments of the Vashon Community Care Center and a familiar sight around Vashon, died Saturday evening in Seattle following a brief illness. He was 96 years old.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 29, at the Bonney-Watson Memorial Park in Seatac.
A graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. at Acacia Memorial Park in Bothell.
There will also be a service at the Vashon Community Care Center at 3 p.m. Sunday.
An obituary will appear later.

Kirschner, H. William Saturday, 22 Apr 2006
H. William Kirschner died Saturday, April 22, 2006, surrounded by his wife and family. He was 87 years old.
Mr. Kirschner was born May 16, 1918, in Seattle. After graduating from Roosevelt High School he completed his degree from the School of Mining Engineering at the University of Washington in 1939. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
It was at the university that he met his wife Barbara Rankin and they married in 1940. They lived most of their married life and raised their family on Vashon Island.
Mr. Kirschner was a charter member of the Vashon Kiwanis Club and the Vashon Island Golf and Country Club and served on the Vashon School Board from 1951 to 1970, when he resigned due to business responsibilities.
It was during the 1950s that Bill created a business with his father and brother designing and building splints for animal fractures and animal cages out of reinforced plastic at their plant on Vashon Island.
In the 1960s he invented the fiberglass ski and founded K2 Corp., which became the largest ski manufacturer in the United States. He retired in 1982.
In 2001 he was inducted into the U. S. National Ski Hall of Fame where he was honored as “one of the great ski entrepreneurs of the 1960s, the golden years of the United States ski business.”
He received the 2005 Distinguished Service Award from the University of Washington School of Engineering.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Barbara, his sons Bill and his wife Susie Kirschner, Bruce and his wife Karen Kirschner, all of Vashon and his daughter Becky and her husband David Pendleton of Vancouver B.C. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Brad, Victoria, Kimi, Kalie, Elly and Greg and five great grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at the K2 Ski Corporation on Vashon Island.
Donations may be made to the Vashon Partners in Education or to a charity of your choice.

Myers, Lloyd M. Friday, 21 Apr 2006
Lloyd M. Myers died April 21, 2006, on Vashon Island. He was 101 years old.
Mr. Myers was born May 23, 1904, in Calvin N.D.
In 1941 he married Ada Mae Parke from Devil’s Lake North Dakota, and they moved to West Seattle. He worked for the Boeing Airplane Company until retirement in 1969.
Mr. Myers continued to live in their West Seattle home after she died in 1994 until he moved to Vashon Island in 2004.
Survivors include his sisters Vernie Nelson of Minnesota, Thea Zakrison of Montana, Betty Daskam of Ballard, sister-in-law Audrey Myers of West Seattle, daughter Mary Steyh of Vashon, son Larry Myers of Bellevue and four grandchildren, Julya and Bryan Steyh of Vashon and Allison and Stephanie Myers of Bellevue.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at the Fauntleroy United Church.
Donations are suggested to 911 or a charity of your choice.
The family thanks everyone for the love and care given to Mr. Myers during his life.

Mish, Bill Thursday, 20 Apr 2006
ends, died April 20, 2006, two days shy of his 75th birthday. He was a long-term resident of Tahlequah.
Born in Montesano and raised in Centralia, Wash., Mr. Mish was a banker, real estate agent, president of the Vashon Island Golf and Country Club and the South End Community Club, a volunteer firefighter and a volunteer at the Vashon-Maury Island Community Food Bank.
He was a veteran of the Korean War.
Perhaps his most interesting accomplishment was as a water witch. More than 100 of the Island’s wells were placed by Bill. His Womish Water System still provides water to a number of Tahlequah homes.
In college at Washington State University, Mr. Mish was president of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. He wooed, with his wonderfully deep singing voice, the President of Kappa Delta Sorority, Nancy Lee Reed. They were married in 1955 at the Episcopal Church on Vashon, following his graduation in general studies and hers in sociology.
They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary shortly before her death in July 2005.
Survivors include two sons, Douglas Mish and David Mish, a grandson, Jesse James Mish and a former daughter-in-law, Judy Mish, all of Vashon.
His parents, Natalie and William Mish of Centralia, died earlier.
A celebration of his life will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at he South End Community Club.

Gilford, Robert Tuesday, 11 Apr 2006
Robert C. Gifford, formerly of England and Colorado, died April 11, 2006, at a hospital in Colorado. He was 77 years old.
Mr. Gifford had worked for the United Nations Department of Food and Agriculture in Italy until his retirement. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Survivors include his wife, Jean, several children and a brother Jack Gifford and his wife Helen of Vashon.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 22, at Island Funeral Service.
Interment will follow at the Vashon cemetery where he will be laid next to his parents.

Bruchus, Peter Tuesday, 14 Nov 2006
Peter Bruchas was born in March of 1945, and he died Nov. 14, 2006.
Mr. Bruchas attended most of his grade school years on Vashon and graduated from Vashon High School in 1964. He then attended Saint Martin’s College.
He joined the Navy and qualified for Navy Fighter Pilot School; however, he became a carrier squadron weatherman.
Following his time in the Navy, Mr. Bruchas travelled extensively in Mexico and South America, taking photographs and doing Peace Corps work delivering supplies for remote schools in the jungles of Belize through Costa Rica.
His love of mechanics, especially related to French and German automobiles, led him to being a “go to” guy for cars of that type. He was also a commercial fisherman. His one true enjoyment, however, came from playing jazz saxophone in big swing bands. He was instrumental in raising the interest in playing the sax among other young people. He played with the Portage Philharmonic Orchestra and the popular Seattle jazz band Roadside Attraction in Tula’s Restaurant and in Belltown.
Mr. Bruchas was also one of the first members of the Island Skindivers and Karate Club. He was a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and a frequent volunteer cook for charity fundraisers.
Survivors include his sister Peggy Mincks and nephew Tobias Mincks.
Friends will miss his great kindness and generosity, subtle rapid-fire humor and wit.
Cremation will be handled by Island Funeral Service. A celebration of life will be held at the Eagles at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10. Donations may be made to the Vashon High School band.

Norin, Garland Baker Saturday, 11 Nov 2006
Garland Baker Norin, a Vashon Island resident for 65 years, died Nov. 11, 2006, at her Burton Peninsula home. She was 91 years old.
Ms. Norin was born June 25, 1915, in Tacoma. She spent her youth in Auburn and graduated from Auburn High School in 1931. She attended the State College of Washington (now Washington State University), graduating with a bachelor’s degree in speech in 1935 and serving as secretary of the associated students. She later returned to WSU to earn a master’s degree in speech in 1971.
She taught high school in LaCrosse, Wash., for two years before marrying Sam Norin in 1937 and moving to Centralia where she worked for radio station KELA.
The Norins moved to Vashon Island in 1941, first living in Ellisport and then moving to Burton two weeks before Pearl Harbor. From 1952 until 1978 Ms. Norin taught in the Vashon Schools, first at Burton Elementary School, then at Vashon High School, where she taught English and drama. During her tenure at the high school, she directed 58 plays. As a member of the Vashon Community Players and Drama Dock, she appeared in many theatrical productions as well.
After retiring from teaching, Ms. Norin opened a collectables shop, Spindrifters, in the Pike Place Market, which she ran until retiring (again) in 2001.
Ms. Norin was a noted writer and historian. In 1957 she published “Vashon Island Is, ” a collection of sketches and poems from her Burton Elementary seventh and eighth graders. She republished the book in 1978 with updates by McMurray School students. She was co-editor (with Marj Watkins) of the book “The Past Remembered, A Vashon-Maury Island Student Community Project, ” a 1978 publication containing history, stories and photographs pertaining to early Vashon Island and its people and places. She was also editor of the 1991 sequel, “The Past Remembered II, Vashon-Maury Island Memories, ” stories collected by Blanche Caffiere and others. Ms. Norin also wrote feature articles for The Beachcomber and Seattle Times. She was a long-time member and served on the board of the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association.
Her husband Sam died in 1984. Survivors include her sons Bob of Tigard, Oregon, and Bill of San Diego, Calif. five grandchildren, a foster son Warren Yeend of Los Altos Hills, Calif. and hundreds and hundreds of her former students.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association, P.O. Box 723, Vashon, Wash. 98070.

Shigley, Asa W. Thursday, 09 Nov 2006
Asa Shigley was born on July 4, 1920, in Seattle, Wash. He died Nov. 9, 2006, in Seattle.
Mr. Shigley grew up in and around the Seattle area. He joined the Navy at 17 and was discharged in October of 1941. He then joined the Sailors Union of the Pacific and shipped out of Seattle on the sailing vessel Commodore. As WWII broke in December, the ship was forced to sail around the Cape of Capricorn.
During WWII, he sailed for the Merchant Marine and crossed the Atlantic numerous times in the supply convoys to Europe. After the war, he returned to Seattle and began building fishing boats with his father in Port Orchard.
In 1946, he met and married his wife Lois in Sitka, Alaska. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in September.
In 1953, Mr. Shigley went back to the Merchant Marine, where he sailed as a captain until 1972. He then worked as a Port Captain until 1986 when he retired. He moved to Vashon in 1950 and considered it his home for the remainder of his life.
He was a president of the Cape Horners Club of North America, which was a “Last Man” association composed of those who had “rounded the Cape” on sailing vessels. He was a devoted family man, his family says.
Survivors include his wife Lois and children Rebecca and her husband Terry Raisio, Asa and his wife Karen, and Mike. Additional survivors include his grandchildren Sam, Ben, Asa, Ryan, Jacquelyn, Joe, Tyson and Mallory and great grandchildren Hunter and Natalia. They will miss his love and concern.
There was no funeral service.
