McAtee, Natalie Byrd Wednesday, 07 Jul 2004
Natalie Byrd McAtee, 86, of Bainbridge Island, died July 7.
She was born March 23, 1918, in Grants Lick, Ky., to Russell Byrd and Mary Baker.
She lived for a time in Palm Beach, Fla., where she worked as a fashion model, and in Dallas, Texas, where she eventually retired as a real estate agent.
She was a life member of the Asso­ciation of Research and Enlight­enment, founded by Edward Cayce.
She treasured a friendship with Cayce’s son Hugh Lynn Cayce, and also memories of a trip with other A.R.E. members to the Holy Land.
She lived with a spirit of service – she taught “charm” classes to troubled teenage girls, and after her retirement volunteered with HeadStart.
She was preceded in death by a son, John Michael “Mike” McAtee, in 1994.

Catherine, Brandenburg Thursday, 08 Jul 2004
Longtime Bainbridge Island resident, Catherine Brandenburg, age 84, died July 8 at Messenger House Care Center.
She was born Sept. 6, 1919, in Spokane, Wash., to John Edward and Margaret DeSailes (Flynn) Deegan.
She graduated from Holy Names Academy in Spokane where she earned her teacher’s certificate.
In addition to being an accomplished violinist and vocalist, she was a teacher’s aide to Marilyn Brandenburg at Wilkes Elementary School for seven years. She worked in the banking industry for National Bank of Commerce for 17 years in several administrative positions.
She is survived by her son, Richard (Shirley) Brandenburg, Mill Creek; one brother, George (Willie) Deegan, Hayden Lake, Ida. and two grandchildren, Jeff Brandenburg, Mt. Vernon, Wash., and Linda Brandenburg, Valdez, Alaska.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil Brandenburg.
A memorial will be held at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.

Boyd, Dan Saturday, 03 Jul 2004
Dan Boyd of Olympus Beach died July 3 at Martha and Mary Nursing Home in Poulsbo. He was 81.
He was born Nov. 6, 1922, in Swords Creek, Va. As a private in the 2nd U.S. Marine Division of the U.S. Armed Forces, he fought and was wounded at Guadalcanal during World War II, for which he received a Purple Heart.
He was married on March 31, 1944, in Columbus, Ohio.
In 1979, he retired as the Assistant Regional Director for the National Labor Relations Board.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Boyd of Poulsbo; daughters Karen Boyd of Denver, Colo., and Martha (Jon) Bayley of Bainbridge Island; and grandchildren Reed and Adam Knappe of Bainbridge.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. July 24 at the Kane cemetery, Port Madison, Bainbridge Island.
Remembrances may be made to Industrial Workers of the World or Northwest Harvest.

Nelson, Darlene Saturday, 10 Jul 2004
Darlene Ameneatt Nelson, age 69, died July 10 at the home of her son, David, on Bainbridge Island.
She was born Feb. 22, 1935, in Juneau, AK to Dan and Ida (Towner) Kelly. She grew up in South Seattle, where she attended Foster High.
She married the love of her life, Dale Nelson, in 1952. They spent several memorable years in the San Juans with their children while Dale was an officer in charge of the Patos Island Lighthouse Station.
She worked for UFCW Local 1001 for 20 years and took early retirement in 1990. She recently moved to Mesa, Ariz., where she planned to live year-round to pursue her passion for golf.
She is survived by her daughter, Dawn Nelson, Monroe; son, David (Cheri) Nelson, Bainbridge Island; two granddaughters, Brandi and Shelby; several nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Fischer, Howard Dressner Monday, 28 Jun 2004
Howard Dressner Fischer of Lemolo died June 28. He was 77.
He was born on Sept. 1, 1926. He married Marjorie Metz on Nov. 23, 1957 in Coronado, Calif.
Fischer served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He also served at Nas Orote, Guam as staff commander of the first tank fleet and USS Wheatear AM390.
He is survived by sons Brian Andrew (Karen) Fischer of Poulsbo and Evan Patrick (Theresa) Fischer of Tacoma; daughter Ann Colleen Bucklin of\ Vancouver; brother Col. Sherril Harvey (Maraki) Fischer of Arlington, Va.; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie.
At his request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of the People’s Memorial Society of Seattle and Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Boggs, Harold A. Friday, 22 Oct 2004
Bainbridge Island resident Harold A. “Hal” Boggs, Jr., age 70, died Oct. 22 at Wyatt House.
He was born Aug. 5, 1934 in Memphis, Tenn., to Harold A. Boggs, Sr. and Mary Louise (Todd) Boggs.
He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1957. He served in the Navy as a pilot and later as a flight instructor on the venerable A-4s.
While attending Naval post-graduate school in Monterrey, Calif., he met and later married Judy Ann Ecklund on May 25, 1963 in Reno, Nev.
During his career, he worked at Corning Glass Company from 1965-1980 in sales and finance; Pfizer, Inc. in Columbia, Md., and Fairfield, Ct., and at Boeing in Seattle from 1988-1996, also in finance.
He was a fine watercolorist and art enthusiast, an avid reader and interested in politics.
He spent his last days surrounded by his loved ones and died peacefully.
He is survived by two daughters, Lisa McCabe, Seattle; Shannon Dow, Bainbridge Island and one granddaughter, Hailey Todd McCabe, Seattle.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Hal’s name may be made to Hospice of Kitsap County, P.O. Box 3416, Silverdale, WA 98383-3416.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.

Rollins, Lona Monday, 25 Oct 2004
Lona Rollins, age 98, died Oct. 25 at the home of her daughter and granddaughter on Bainbridge.
She lived in her home in Fortuna, Calif., until 2001, when she moved to the island to be with her family. She is survived by her daughter, Lois McClellan, Bainbridge Island; son Abel Fortune, Seattle; and five grandchildren and 13 grandchildren.
The family requests no flowers. Donations can be made to Hospice of Kitsap County, P.O. Box 3416 Bucklin Hill Road, Suite 201, Silverdale, WA 98383

Peters, Alan Thursday, 28 Oct 2004
Alan Peters, age 80, of Bainbridge Island died Oct. 28.
He was born Ernst Pfeffer in Vienna, Austria, to parents Abrahm and Margarete Pfeffer. His father was a cabinetmaker and his mother a homemaker.
He lived in Vienna until age 15, when he escaped by securing a seat on the Kinder­transport, a program sponsored by the British government that saved 10, 000 German and Austrian children from the advance of the Nazi regime.
After arriving in England, he was fortunate to have a guardian, Suzy Fry, who took him into her home. He completed his education at the University of Manchester.
He became a British citizen and army officer by the age of 21; he changed his name at the request of the British Army, upon his wartime service in Germany.
After the war, he emigrated to Canada and lived in Montreal for the Northern Electric Company. There he met Diana Culbard, and they married on Oct. 27, 1951.
They moved to the United States in 1953 and became citizens in 1958. They lived in Berkeley, Calif., and then Palo Alto, raising two children. He worked as a systems engineer for United Airlines, retiring in 1981. He then worked for Bank of America until retiring at age 65.
To celebrate his retirement, Alan traveled to Nepal and climbed to the base camp of the Annapurna Range. He was an avid backpacker, hiker and environmentalist, and he and his wife hiked all over the world.
He was a dedicated Unitarian Universalist and served on the boards of the San Francisco church, the Marin Fellowship, the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, the Starr King Seminary in Berkeley, and the Bainbridge Island Fellowship.
He engaged life with curiosity and valued knowledge about the peoples and history of the world.
He is survived by his wife, Diana Peters of Bainbridge Island; son Mark (Olivia) Peters and grandchildren Oren, Damian, Ruben and Nira of the Canary Islands, Spain; and daughter Julia (Steve) Maslach and grandchildren Dillon and Jamie of Bainbridge Island.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Nov. 6 at Grace Episcopal Church.

Gustafson, David Friday, 24 Sep 2004
David Gustafson, 77, died Sept. 24 of heart failure while working in his yard at the family home in Lemolo.
He was born at Swedish Hospital in Seattle on May 6, 1927 the son of Milton Gustafson and Estrid (Backstrom) Gustafson.
He was raised in Seattle and spent summers at the family summer home in Lemolo.
He graduated from Roosevelt High School, joined the Navy and saw duty in Hawaii after Pearl Harbor.
Upon returning from the service he attended Whitman College in Walla Walla graduating with a degree in chemistry in 1950.
While at Whitman he met and married Renee Reinhardt. He then served in the Korean War as an Army First Lieutenant.
After the war, he attended the University of Washington and received his teaching certificate, after which the family moved to Lemolo full time, in 1955, where he began teaching at North Kitsap High School. He taught chemistry and physics with great enthusiasm and pleasure.
In the early 1960s he attended Washington State University for four summers where in received a master’s degree.
In 1965, he transferred to the Shoreline School District and commuted via the Kingston ferry until his retirement in 1983.
A master teacher who was popular with his students, he received many teaching honors during his tenure.
He was a life-long learner himself and after taking early retirement due to heart problems, he took up active interest in many things including stone sculpting, woodcarving, gardening and brewing beer.
As a retiree, he became an avid reader and generous volunteer at the Northwest Marine Science Center in Poulsbo.
He also delighted in spending time at the family cabin in Forks, where he loved to fish the rivers and walk the nearby ocean beaches.
Later in his retirement he enjoyed being a substitute teacher at North Kitsap High School.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years Renee Gustafson; his sister Louise Boice of Bothell, and his three children Jeff (Cathy) of Tiburon, Calif., Susan (Casey) McGrath of Bainbridge Island, and Brian (Denice) of Indianola; and grandchildren Anna, Jessie, Max, Rachael and Leah.
Arrangements are by the Stone Chapel, Poulsbo.

Madane, Peggy Ann Friday, 01 Oct 2004
Former island resident Peggy Ann Madane, 83, of Boise, Idaho, died Oct. 1 at her home after a battle with cancer.
She was born on March 15, 1921 in Seattle, to John and Camilla Erikson.
She was raised in Seattle and attended Queen Ann High School in Seattle.
She met and married Dan Walter Oliver and they had twin daughters, Joan and Janet.
She and Dan later divorced and she married Jimmy Madane in Seattle.
They moved to Hawaii and Peggy worked with Pan American Airlines in Hawaii in many different areas of the company and retired as an executive secretary for the president of Pan American in Hawaii. Through her work with Pan Am, she learned many different facets of the airline business. During their lifetime, she and Jimmy traveled the world extensively.
In 1985, she and her husband moved to Bainbridge Island, where they lived until Jimmy died in 2003; she then moved to Boise.
She loved people and had many friends who enjoyed her cooking and entertaining, gardening and one of her first loves, needlepoint.
Her award-winning work has been enjoyed by many and even published in a well-known needlework magazine.
She is survived by her daughters Joan Prigge and husband Bob of Boise, and Janet White and husband Charles of Parma, Idaho; grandchildren Kimberley Stanley, Karen Poor, Margie Preston, Terri Murray, Steven M. Jones and Robert M. Jones; and 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Funeral services were held under the direction of Cloverdale Funeral Home of Boise.
