Phyllis (Hartfield) SCHARR
Born in Japan on Feb. 25, 1954
Died on Nov. 24, 2003 and resided in Missoula, MT.
Started her journey Monday evening at 8:19 PM on the 24th of November with her children and friends at her side. At the time of her passing Phyllis was in Seattle on a business trip, and became ill from complications from a liver ailment. She was going through procedures with a transplant team to get a liver transplant, but unexpected complications occurred and she went into a deep coma on Sunday, November 23. It was a great loss to our community, as she was loved and respected by all that knew her. Her soft-spoken voice has been heard throughout Montana universities, colleges and reservations, speaking out in public and teaching health education in HIV/Hepatitis prevention. It was her hope that she made a stand about the seriousness of prevention of an unforgivable disease. Even in her final days, she was thinking how to use her own situation for others to learn from.
She was preceded in death by her husband LeRoy Scharr and her brother Peter Hartfield. Phyllis was born on February 25th, 1954 in Japan, as her father served in the U.S. Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant, along with her 2 siblings. She was an enrolled Tribal Member with the Kuruk Tribe in California. She was often noted for her big heart and her love of beading, gardening and reading.
Phyllis leaves behind her mother and father, Morgan and Bernice Hartfield; her brother Tim Hartfield; her children Grace Ann Countryman, Dosia Nordlund, Abraham Hartfield, Juniper Hartfield and Heather Olsen-Ostermiller. She also leaves seven grandchildren as well as many friends from all over.
It was her wish to be cremated and scattered with her husband's ashes in the Spring when the flowers are blooming, in Montana. And with that, those wishes are being carried out.
It is our thought that Phyllis on that other side, with LeRoy, finally at peace, looking on with that one sided smile of hers.

Jerald Paul SAPIANO
Born in San Francisco, CA on Nov. 29, 1940
Died on Apr. 22, 2003 and resided in Seattle, WA.
cemetery: Holyrood Catholic cemetery
After a short but courageous battle with cancer, Jerry went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus on April 22, 2003. Left to mourn is his daughter Cindy (Mike) Harwood and their two children Breanna and Paige of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, his son Joseph (Theresa Fielding) Sapiano of Seattle, Washington and daughter Jennifer Sapiano of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. His brother Edward Sapiano of Portland, Oregon, his former wife Gail Blewett of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada and several nieces and nephews of San Francisco, California are also left to mourn. His parents Carmella and Joseph Sapiano and his sister Josephine (Charlie) Borg predeceased him.
Jerry was born and raised in San Francisco. He graduated from Balboa High School in 1958 and he spent most of his growing up years doing what he loved the most: rebuilding engines. He met and married Gail Anderson and in 1963 he established Sapiano's Machine Shop.
In 1970 Jerry and his wife Gail moved to Kelowna, British Columbia where he owned and operated an automotive business, invested in real estate and raised his three children.
Jerry also lived and worked in Spokane for 15 years. After retirement he lived with his brother Ed in Portland and then his son Joe in Seattle.
It can be said that Jerry liked the simple things in life. He cherished working around his house, landscaping and doing home improvement projects. He liked to build models, tinker with cars and attend swap meets. But most of all he loved the sunshine. He loved being close to the water and enjoyed walking, hiking and biking. Regardless of the activity, Jerry was fairly laid back. He liked to relax and take it easy. He always found joy and contentment in whatever he did.
Although Jerry had a tremendous passion for cars and engine rebuilding, there was nothing that brought him more pleasure than spending time with family. He had a very strong sense of family and would do anything for anyone of them. He especially appreciated holidays, birthdays or reunions when the family could all be together. He loved spending time with his grandchildren Breanna and Paige. Many days were spent with them flying kites, playing at the beach, going for walks or simply cuddling on the couch reading to them.
Jerry had a deep love and commitment to those closest to him. He was a loving father, grandparent, brother and friend. He faced his cancer with humility, integrity, grace, strength and courage. He left behind an extraordinary legacy to all those who loved him. He will be sadly missed.
