Vernita Fae McMahan Thomas
Jan. 6, 1914 -- Dec. 10, 2005
Vernita Fae McMahan Thomas died in her Sequim home of age-related causes. She was 91.
She was born to James Aurelius ``Aura" and Maude A. (Howard) McMahan on her grandmother's farm near Logan, Kan.
She lived on the farm until drought forced her father to relocate and run grain elevators in several small towns, then a grain business in Salina, Kan., where she graduated from high school in 1932.
The family moved to Marysville, Kan., where she met William Thomas on June 20, 1940.
The Thomases moved to California, where the couple divorced in 1970.
Mrs. Thomas then moved to Sequim to be near her mother and stepfather, Bill Pearson.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Survivors include daughter Lois Hecker of Woodland Hills, Calif.; brother Cleo McMahan of Gakona, Alaska; sister Lois Gordon of Waterville, Kan.; and two granddaughters.
Services: To be announced. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge.
Memorials: Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., Sequim, WA 98382.

Mildred Leontine `Tina' Thompson
April 6, 1926 -- Dec. 4, 2005
Longtime Port Ludlow resident Mildred Leontine ``Tina" Thompson died in Billings, Mont., as the result of a stroke. She was 79.
She was born at Silver Hill, W.Va., to Alpha Gustavus Reed and Bertha Mae (Miller) Mace,
She married James Clarence Thompson.
Mrs. Thompson is survived by sons Robert Lee Thompson of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Edward Dale Thompson of Port Ludlow; daughters Valerie Lynn Taylor of Thompson Falls, Mont., and Rose Ann Wride of Billings, Mont.; and sisters Florence Roach of Dalton, Ohio, and Beatrice Chaney of Killbuck, Ohio.
Her husband and son, Roger, preceded her in death.
Services: Held Dec. 10, in the Port Townsend Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chimacum. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, was in charge of arrangements.
Burial will be in Chimacum cemetery with Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, in charge.

ELMA DEANE ERICKS
Elma Deane ``Deanie" Ericks passed away on December 4, 2005, after a sudden illness.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Lewis J. ``Eric" Ericks, and her daughter, Dee Renee Ericks, both of Port Angeles, and her brother, Willard Edwards of Imperial Beach, California.
Deanie Ericks was born on October 22 in Ottawa, Kansas, to Frederick Arthur Edwards, and Bulah Mae McIlvain.
Following graduation from North High School in Wichita, Kansas, she traveled alone to New York City, where she took professional dance training from master teachers.
In 1946, Deanie graduated from Wichita State University with a BA in Education, specializing in primary and secondary levels. She later received a Master's Degree in Dance from the Chicago Association of Dance Masters.
As an avid lover of classical dance, Deanie began taking dance lessons at age 3, with training in tap, ballet and acrobatics. She began appearing in professional shows and nightclub acts by age 11, and traveled with dance troupes to many major U.S. cities.
She later worked as a Harvey Girl, and performed with the USO for troops during World War II.
In October 1950 she opened the Elma Deane School of Dance in Boulder, Colorado, sharing her skills and devotion to dance with aspiring dancers of all ages.
Deanie Ericks moved to Sun City, Arizona, in 1981 to be closer to family. In 1988, she and her husband moved to Port Angeles, where her daughter works as a Park Ranger for Olympic National Park.
Deanie became active as a park volunteer at the Olympic National Park Visitor Center for many years. She continued to share her love for the dance by teaching tap dancing, and establishing ``Deanie's Toe Tappers, " a performing group.
Deanie choreographed dance routines for her dancers to perform at benefit shows for nursing homes, community special events such as the Festival of Trees and Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts, and the Joyce Grange.
Deanie was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Boulder, Colorado. She remained steadfast in her beliefs through readings in both Christian Science and ``Unity."
Deanie Ericks will be remembered for her lifelong devotion to her family, extending her loving spirit to people she met, and her passion for teaching classical dance.
A small gathering celebrating Deanie's life was held at the home of Ruth and Frank Welch in Port Angeles on December 8, 2005.

Patrick K. Maguire
Nov. 17, 1921 -- Dec. 2, 2005
Port Angeles resident Patrick K. Maguire died in Harborview Medical Center, Seattle, of a heart attack. He was 84.
A great-grandson of John Dyke, the first mayor of Port Angeles, and a son of Harry Maguire, he was born in Port Angeles.
He retired 20 years ago as the city's sanitation supervisor.
In 1961, he was certified by the city of Port Angeles as a civil defense radiological monitor, and completed a Dale Carnegie course in Port Angeles in June 1971.
Mr. Maguire was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hiking, deer and bird hunting and stream trout fishing, and he participated in Clallam County Search and Rescue.
He completed Basic Search and Rescue Academy studies in October 1988, and received a lifesaving award in October 1999 for successfully tracking an elderly Alzheimer's disease patient who had wandered away.
During World War II, he served with the Marine Corps after which he maintained memberships in the U.S. Marine Raiders Association, Marines Memorial Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Maguire married Clara Hulse in Shelton on July 30, 1949. She preceded him in death.
Mr. Maguire's survivors include his partner, Karen Amsdill of Port Angeles, daughter Inez Dougherty of Edgewood and two granddaughters.
Services: None. Powers Sumner Funeral Home, Puyallup, is in charge.
Memorials: Clallam County Search and Rescue, c/o Clallam County Sheriff's Department, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles, WA 98362.

JOHN J. FREITAS JR.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, December 16, at the Sequim VFW on Washington Street for the commander. A reception will follow the service.
John was born in Santa Clara, California, on November 7, 1938, to Margaret and John J. Freitas Sr.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Joan Marie Freitas, and his wife, Liu Shieu-Chin.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary; son, David; daughter-in-law, Shari; and grandchildren Matthew and Katie.
He married his second wife, Geri Peters, in November 1996 and gained six stepchildren: Maria, Patti, Chuck, Jeanne, Anne, Debbie, Lisa and Michael, along with grandchildren Keith, Chris, Brandy, Renee, Nikko, Christina and also great-grandchildren Tyler and Frank.
He joined the Navy in 1952 and retired after serving 32 years, 9 months and 22 days on August 31, 1989.
He achieved the highest enlisted naval rank of Senior Master Chief.
After retiring from the Navy, he joined RF Microsystems as a Field Engineer and retired after 10 years.
``Master Chief" John J. Freitas had a Master of Science Degree in Computer Information Systems.
He was a member of the following organizations: Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4760, Footprinters, Naval Elks, Masons and the Olympic Sojourners Club.

EDGAR A. HIXSON
Edgar A. Hixson died suddenly on December 9, 2005, in Seattle at Harborview Medical Center from complications of an aortic aneurism.
He was born in Comax, British Columbia, on March 12, 1925, to Edgar and Myrtle (Warren) Hixson.
His family moved to Port Angeles in 1930.
Ed labored through junior high and high school in order to make enough money to buy his first car and impress the love of his life, Gwyneth Goodwin. Ed graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1943 and immediately entered the Army Air Corps.
In 1945, he and Gwyneth were married .
After his discharge, they attended the University of Washington together while living in G.I. housing at Yesler Terrace in Seattle.
Ed began his 40-year career at Boeing in 1947.
During his tenure at Boeing, Ed worked on a variety of projects, including B-29, C-97, B-52, BOMARC, E-4 and, during his last years at Boeing, the E-4A and Airforce 1.
He retired from Boeing in 1987 as a lifetime member of the Boeing Management Association.
Ed's workaday career, while rewarding, was really just a means to fund his avocation: hunting and fishing.
An elk hunting trip in November was mandatory use of vacation time, after which the sleet and rain of the Hoh Rain Forest sang their siren song of winter steelhead.
Ed's passion for the outdoors led him to a long and fruitful association with the Department of Fish and Wildlife Hunter Education Program, Port Angeles Group, as chief instructor. He truly enjoyed the students, young and old, and their sense of accomplishment when completing the course.
He was a member of Peninsula Long Rifle Inc. and an active volunteer in the Weed Warriors of Lake Sutherland.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Gwyneth Hixson; his daughter and son-in-law, Allyn and Doug Stevens; his son and daughter-in-law, John and Susan Hixson; his four grandchildren, all of Seattle; and his sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and Bruce Hetsler of Coulee City, Washington.
Services will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 510 E. Park Ave., Port Angeles, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church or your favorite charity.

Charles D. Broders
April 11, 1914 -- Dec. 12, 2005Charles D. Broders, 91, died in his Discovery Bay home of age-related causes.
He was born in Gladbrook, Iowa, to Bernard Frederick and Julia Mae (Stafford) Broders.
He served in the Navy prior to and during World War II, and was in Alaska with the Army Corps of Engineers.
Mr. Broders married Marie Gunstone in Discovery Bay on Aug. 27, 1944.
In addition to his wife and sons Richard and Ray, all of Discovery Bay, survivors include daughter Bonnie Broders and five grandchildren.
Services: None. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Jeaniah O. Carroll
July 14, 1923 -- Dec. 3, 2005
Jeaniah O. Carroll, 82, died in Kah Tai Care Center, Port Townsend, of end-stage dementia.
She was born in Independence, Mo., to Forest and Oris (Griffen) George.
She is survived by daughter Sinda Carroll.
Services: None. Following cremation, remains will be inurned in Sequim View cemetery with those of her late husband, Morris W. Carroll.
Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.

Melvin E. Case
Dec. 20, 1929 -- Dec. 10, 2005
Port Townsend resident Melvin E. Case died in Jefferson Healthcare hospital of pneumonia at age 75.
He was born in Lomira, Wis., to Oscar William and Hazel Ida (Bayer) Case.
After growing up in Wisconsin, he served with the Army from February 1952 through January 1954.
Mr. Case married Lorraine Katherine Trautmann in Ellendale, N.D., on April 26, 1955.
The couple then moved to Port Townsend, where he worked at the Crown Zellerbach paper mill until he retired in 1991.
In his younger days, Mr. Case enjoyed fishing and bowling.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and First Baptist Church.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Kevin E. and Tracie Case of Oak Harbor; daughter and son-in-law Lori and Stacey Wickett of Shelton; daughter Lisa Cloward of Port Townsend; brother and sister-in-law Kenneth and Jackie Case of Arkansas; sister and brother-in-law Leila and Willian Koncel of Wisconsin; sister Janet Case of Wisconsin; and six grandchildren.
His wife died Nov. 19, 2002. He was also preceded in death by infant grandson Adam Zachary Cloward.
Services: Saturday, Dec. 17, 1 p.m., memorial and reception in First Baptist Church, 1202 Lawrence St., Port Townsend. The Rev. Skip Cadorette will officiate.
Private inurnment in Laurel Grove cemetery will be under the direction of Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend.
