Donald Freitag

Donald Freitag, age 71 of Oxford, Wisconsin died Thursday, February 5, 2004 at the St. Clare Meadows Nursing Home in Baraboo, Wisconsin .

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 10, 2004 at 11:30 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin with Reverend Dennis Schueler, Vicar Jonathan Vierkant and Reverend Allan Boeck celebrating. Burial will be at Spring Grove cemetery in Wisconsin Dells. Military rites will be provided by the Harold B. Larkin American Legion Post 187 of Wisconsin Dells and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9387 of Wisconsin Dells.

Donald was born October 18, 19 32 in Avon, South Dakota the son of Otto and Selma (Heins) Freitag. He graduated from high school in Aberdeen, South Dakota in 1950 and then entered the U.S. Army and served in Korea . After returning from the military he enrolled at Northern State University in Aberdeen and obtained a B.S. degree in 1957. He was a business education teacher in Jeffers, Minnesota from 1957 to 1962. In 1962 he went to Portage High School where he taught business education and was a guidance counselor until his retirement in 1994.

On June 11, 1977 he entered into wedded bliss with Laura Lee Sternberg. Together they spent 25 wonderful years with each other until November of 2002 when Laura died suddenly. Don mourned her loss until he went to meet her again in heaven.

Don was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he held offices such as the Board of Education; Elder; Congregation President and was a choir member.

Don is survived by his son, Paul (Rhonda) Freitag of Baraboo; a daughter, Mary Freitag of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; grandchildren, Rachael Freitag of Baraboo, Abby Vaughter, Aaron, Ben and Max Lindsley of Detroit Lakes; a brother, Ken (Loraine) Freitag of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, Merle (Phyllis) Freitag of Wildwood, Missouri and Gerald (Marylin) Freitag of Billings, Montana; a sister, Geraldine (Harry) Woelfol of Houston, Texas; sister in law, Sally (Doug) Scheel of DePere, Wisconsin; brother in law, Richard (Jane) Sternberg of Wausau, Wisconsin and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Laura.

Visitation will be held at the Picha Funeral Home of Lake Delton, Wisconsin on Monday, February 9, 2004 from 4 to 8 P.M. and on Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church from 10:30 A.M. until the time of service at 11:30 A.M.

William Grieger

William H. (Bill) Grieger, age 88, a lifelong resident of the Wisconsin Dells area, died Wednesday, January 28, 2004, at St. Clare Hospital of Baraboo, Wisconsin.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, February 3, 2004, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Wisconsin Dells with Father Felix Oehrlein celebrating. Burial will be at Calvary cemetery in Wisconsin Dells.

Bill was born March 30, 19 15, in Kilbourn (now Wisconsin Dells), Wisconsin and he attended the country school in Big Spring, Wisconsin . On January 14, 19 39 he married Elsie Zeitz in Wisconsin Dells. They were married for 65 years. In his early marriage he was a farmer. Always having a love working with wood he changed careers and later went on to become a carpenter/roofer/home remodeler, starting with the VanWie Lumber Company. For the succeeding 30+ years he was self employed in the same profession as Bill’s Home Remodeling. Before he retired in 1988 Bill also worked in making woodcrafts and as a knife and saw sharpener. He was a very community minded person and was very willing to help out others when needed. He was a faithful member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church and had been a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Bill is survived by his wife, Elsie; a son, Richard A. (Barbara A. Truelsen) Grieger of Elgin, Illinois; a stepbrother, James ( Virginia ) Grieger of Wisconsin Dells and a niece, Beverly Grieger of Wisconsin Dells. He was preceded in death by his mother, Anna (nee Gottschalk) and stepfather, John T. Grieger and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be held at Picha Funeral Home of Lake Delton, Wisconsin on Monday, February 2, 2004 from 4 to 7 P.M. and on Tuesday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service at 10:30 A.M.

Alma Peterson

Alma Peterson, age 95 of Lake Hill, Woodstock Township, New York, formerly of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin died Sunday, January 18, 2004 at her residence where she has resided for the past 30 years.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 24, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at the Newport Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Dells, of which she had been a member, with Reverend William Grimm celebrating. Burial will be at Newport Lutheran Church cemetery .

Alma was born July 21, 19 08 on the family homestead in the upper settlement of Newport Township, Columbia County, Wisconsin the daughter of Peter Anton and Kirstin Helene (Larsen) Peterson. She attended Badger Valley School and worked in Stower’s Restaurant in the Dells as well as help on the family farm. She later was a care-giver, taking care of several families including Anna Wimann and Edna Crothers in the Dells; Emma Champney and Will Haeberlein in Briggsville, Wisconsin as well as several family members.

Alma was the last surviving grandchild of immigrant settlers of Newport Township, Peder Anderson Stomme and Halvor Larsen Loite. She is survived by nephews, Kenneth W. Peterson of Irvington, Alabama and Peter A. Peterson of Portage, Wisconsin ; nieces, Helen J. Hoege of Wisconsin Dells and Margaret Aikins of Madison, Wisconsin and many great nieces and nephews including Kenneth R. and Carl A. Peterson, her care-givers. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Carl A., H. Paulman and Alfred S. Peterson; a sister, Hilda Louise Peterson and a nephew, Harold R. Peterson.

Visitation will be held at Newport Lutheran Church on Saturday from 10 A.M. until the time of service at 11 A.M.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Newport Lutheran Church .

Madelyn Joseph

Madelyn Kaye Joseph, 13 day old infant daughter of Daniel and Stephanie Joseph of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin died Sunday, January 18, 2004 at the Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin .

Private family funeral services were held at the United Presbyterian Church in Wisconsin Dells with Reverend Steven Keller celebrating.

Madelyn is survived by her parents, Daniel and Stephanie (Carpenter) Joseph; paternal grandparents, Ed and Judy Joseph of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin and maternal grandparents, Dennis and Diana Carpenter of Cuba City, Wisconsin .

Wanda Kempton

Wanda Kempton, age 65 of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin died Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at the Wisconsin Dells Health and Rehabilitation Center .

Memorial funeral services will be held Friday, January 2, 2004 at 12:00 Noon at Victory Baptist Church on Sycamore Road in DeKalb, Illinois .

Wanda was born July 16, 1938 in Sycamore, Illinois the daughter of John and Orena (Fuller) Haugen.

She is survived by a son, Maurice (Bobbi) Kempton, Jr.; sisters, Dolores (Jesse) Coan of Florida and Laura (Scott) Scott of Colorado and one granddaughter, Tiffany. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Maurice Kempton, Sr. and a brother, Gene Haugen.

Visitation will be held at Victory Baptist Church on Friday from 11 A.M. until Noon

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the family and a memorial fund will be established.

Jo Ann O'Malley

Jo Ann O'Malley, age 74 of Lake Delton, Wisconsin went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 18, 2003 at her residence with her loving family by her side following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 21, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin with Reverend Craig Wolfgram and Pastor Jay Heesch co-officiating. Burial will be at Spring Grove cemetery in Wisconsin Dells.

Jo Ann was born August 12, 1929 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin the daughter of Dennis and Grace (Schmitz) Olson and she grew up in Winchester, Wisconsin where she attended a one room school and she was one of two children in her grade. Then she attended Winneconne High School . She continued her education at University of Wisconsin Madison and received degrees in chemistry and home economics. In August of 1950 she married John O’Malley in Larsen, Wisconsin . He preceded her in death in 1982. Jo Ann contributed much to her community and served on the Wisconsin Dells School Board for 12 years; taught Sunday school for 32 years; was an officer for the State of Wisconsin Restaurant Association, was a recipient of Restaurant of the Year award and owned and operated Annies Pizza Port in Lake Delton for 38 years. She also loved figuring crossword puzzles and playing bridge.

Jo Ann will be missed dearly by her son, Matthew of Los Angeles, California; daughters, Ann (Carl) Cady of Lake Delton, Beth (David) Corning of West Chicago, Illinois and Caron (Kent) Roesler of New Lisbon, Wisconsin; a sister, Diane (Daniel) Zeimet of Deerfield, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Seth, Diedrik, Emily, Luke, Lee, Stephanie and Caleb; great grandchildren, Anna and David; step grandchildren, Kristy and Karrie and step great grandchildren, Lexxie and Jaedn. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and a brother, Dennis, Jr.

Visitation will be held at the Picha Funeral Home of Lake Delton, Wisconsin on Saturday, December 20, 2003 from 2 to 5 P.M.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Home Health United Hospice.

Marie Gibson

Marie Gibson, age 69 of Baraboo, Wisconsin died Friday, December 12, 2003 at St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at 3:00 P.M. at the Picha Funeral Home in Lake Delton, Wisconsin. Burial will be at the Walnut Hill cemetery in Baraboo.

Marie was born November 15, 1934 in Cleveland, Ohio the daughter of Joseph and Frances (Zidnak) Ludwig and she grew up in Brunswick, Ohio. In May of 1978 she married James Gibson in Spokane, Washington. Marie loved to bowl and her favorite pet was Pepper the dog. She was a very loving wife, mother and G-ma. “She will dearly be missed and will forever remain in our hearts”.

Marie is survived by her husband, James, Sr.; sons, James (Paula) Jr. and Robert (Dawn) both of Edgerton, Wisconsin; daughters, Tina (Michael) Lund of Baraboo and Stella (Dale) Boyd of Edgerton; a brother, Joseph Ludwig and a sister, Ruth Beam both of Brunswick, Ohio; and grandchildren, Davy, Dan, Tabitha, Jackie, Maryssa, Robert, Aaron, Audriana, Kaydi and Payton. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Diane DeMoss; grandson, Austin Gibson and parents in law, Audrey and Ernst Leffingwell.

Visitation will be held at the Picha Funeral Home on Wednesday from 1 P.M. until the time of service at 3 P.M.

Joseph Czapla

Joseph Czapla, age 54 of Baraboo, Wisconsin died Sunday, December 7, 2003 at St. Clare Meadows Nursing Home in Baraboo.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Clare Meadows in Baraboo with Reverend Dennis Schueler officiating. Burial will be at Spring Grove cemetery in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.

Joseph was born June 19, 1949 in East Chicago, Indiana the son of John and Helen (Sanders) Czapla. He attended St. Joseph’s College in East Chicago and was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity and Omicron Lambda Chapter. He was a teacher in junior and senior high schools. For the past 16 years he has lived in the Dells area and had been a security guard before medical problems took over. Joe’s favorite pastimes were drawing and sketching and at one time had a vast necktie collection.

Joe is survived by his son, Jonathan; former wife, Laurie and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and other relatives.

Visitation will be held at St. Clare Meadows on Wednesday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services at 10:30 A.M.

Emil Gray Grbavcik

Emil Gray Grbavcik, age 86 of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin died Thursday, December 4, 2003 at St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo, Wisconsin .

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, December 6, 2003 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Wisconsin Dells with Father Felix Oehrlein officiating. Burial will be at Calvary cemetery in Wisconsin Dells. Military rites will be provided by the Harold B. Larkin American Legion Post 187 of Wisconsin Dells.

Emil was born October 9, 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio the son of Joseph and Mary (Sykora) Grbavcik. In 1937 he married Sally Radlick. She preceded him in death on October 19, 2000 . In 1943 Emil was inducted into the U.S. Army where he attained the rank of staff sergeant. He had been a bandsman playing the baritone and also earned decorations for the Asiatic Pacific Theater with 2 bronze stars; the Philippine Liberation with 1 bronze star; Good Conduct and Victory Medals. He was honorably discharged in January of 1946 and shortly thereafter moved to the Dells. From his musical background, Emil entertained many people playing his bass fiddle and baritone. This mixed with a comedy routine that he fine tuned to the crowd he was playing to he was able to make grown people laugh out of their seats and little kids listen intently. In his heyday he was a regular performer in the Dells area at the Dell View Resort, Chula Vista and River Inn. Even until just recently Emil was sure to get people laughing. Also being a very patriotic person, Emil regularly addressed the Veterans Day Services with his rendition of the Grand Old Flag for many years. He was a past commander of both the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Wisconsin Dells. He also was a self employed real estate broker operating Lake of the Pines Realty.

Emil is survived by brothers, George and Ron, both of Cleveland ; sisters, Lillian of Parma, Ohio and Helen of Sarasota, Florida; American Legion and V.F.W. buddies and many friends of all ages. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sally and a sister, Millie.

Visitation will be held at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church on Saturday from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service at 10:30 A.M.

Raymond Schreck

Raymond Schreck, age 86 of Lake Delton, Wisconsin died peacefully in the comfort of his own home following a courageous battle with cancer with his loving family by his side on Friday, November 28, 2003.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Wisconsin Dells with Father Felix Oehrlein officiating. Raymond’s cremains will be interred at St. Mary’s Catholic cemetery in Elizabeth, Illinois.

Ray was born October 13, 1917 in Elizabeth, Illinois the son of Louis and Anna (Goldhagen) Schreck. For many years Ray was a mechanic and he retired in 1986. He lived in Reedsburg, Wisconsin for awhile and then moved to Lake Delton in 1969 where he has resided since.

Ray is survived by a son, Richard (Candi) Schreck of Scales Mound, Illinois; daughters, Nila Randles of Janesville, Wisconsin and Lilah Hardin of Baraboo, Wisconsin; 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ruth Berlage and Florence Fischer; brothers, Walter, Clem and Douglas; former wife, LaVonne Allen Ivarsen and a special friend and dancing partner of 16 years, Frieda Buskager.

Visitation will be held at the Picha Funeral Home of Lake Delton, Wisconsin on Tuesday from 4 to 8 P.M. with a vigil service at 7:00 P.M.

The family would especially like to thank Home Health United Hospice Care.
