Hillestad, Verla I.

NEW GLARUS - Mrs. Verla I. Hillestad, age 91, a former New Glarus resident, passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at the Monroe Clinic Hospital. She was born on March 17, 1917, in the train depot in Huxley, Iowa to her parents Charles and Edna Irene (Smith) White. Verla grew up the daughter of a railroad station master and lived in several towns throughout Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin. She was a graduate of DeForest High School. Verla attended vocational school for secretarial training in Seattle, Wash. while living with her cousin. On April 19, 1941, she married William K. Hillestad in Dubuque, Iowa. Verla worked as a secretary for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for 15 years. She also was a proofreader for the New Glarus Post and the Swiss Church Spire. Verla was a member of the Swiss United Church of Christ in New Glarus, Stuessy - Kuenzi American Legion Auxillary, Swiss Church Ladies Aid and Women's Guild, and Alpine Club. Verla and her husband enjoyed traveling the country and camping in their RV. They were both members of the Good Sam Club. After her husband passed away, Verla continued her travels with trips to Alaska, Florida, and Branson, Mo. She was proud to have visited every state of the Union except for Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Verla also enjoyed sewing, quilting, and crocheting. Verla is survived by her two sons, Richard (Judy) Hillestad of Topanga, Calif. and Robert (LuAnn) Hillestad of Appleton; a daughter, Virginia Rubin of Los Angeles, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Kent) Stevenson, Jesse Hillestad, Jason Hillestad, Robin Hillestad, Stephanie Rubin, Griffin Klema, and Renate Poelman; four great-grandchildren, Damon, Javen, Areli, and Savannah; and a sister, Alice (Rudy) Wegert of Poynette. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; and brothers, Wendell, Lloyd, and Gale White. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 31, 2008, at the SWISS UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 18 Fifth Ave., New Glarus, with the Rev. Meg Shepherd and Pastor Petra Streiff officiating. Relatives and friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service on Thursday, July 31, 2008, at the SWISS UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, New Glarus. A memorial fund to mental health and cancer research has been established.

Jackson, Johnny Lee "J.J."

SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA - Johnny "J.J." Jackson, age 61, formerly of Fitchburg passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2008, after a three year battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 26, 1947, to the late Rev. Lloyd and Josephine Jackson in Shreveport, Louisiana.J.J. served his country in the U.S. Air Force, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. After a honorable discharge in 1969, J.J. joined the Wisconsin State Patrol and later went on to join the Fitchburg Police Department in January of 1980, where he served for 19 distinguished years until his retirement in 1999. His love for life, family and friends brought him back to his hometown of Shreveport in 2005. J.J. enjoyed every aspect of living, traveling, hiking and camping. He was also a member of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club of Wisconsin. His love for his dear friends and family are evident by the many, many pictures and souvenirs he has left behind. He has maintained a close relationship with many of his fellow officers and friends in Wisconsin after returning to his hometown. J.J. will be greatly missed by all who have known him through the years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Josephine Jackson; and two nephews, Gary Sherman and Kenneth Jackson. He is survived by three sisters and two brothers, Mary (W.L.) Sherman, Willie (Geneva) Jackson, Earnest (Beatrice) Jackson, Leara M. Jackson and Bernice (Kenneth) Rose. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Jacobson, Ruth

MADISON/ JANESVILLE - Ruth Jacobson, age 101, passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2008, at Waunakee Manor in Waunakee. She was born on Aug. 20, 1906, the daughter of Thor and Susanne (Jenson) Jacobson, in Perry Township, Dane County. Ruth moved to Madison where she worked at the University Hospital for more than 30 years. She spent her career as the supervisor in the cafeteria. In addition to her regular staff, she befriended and passed on her strong work ethic to hundreds of university students throughout the years. Ruth was a great fan of all UW sports and loved to watch the Packers. She was a gifted knitter, loved to travel, and was a very creative and generous person. In addition to living in Madison, she also lived in Janesville for a number of years. Ruth was a life long member of Perry Lutheran Church in Daleyville. She is survived by her dear friend, Marian Warren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and by her siblings, Viola, Alpha, Jacob, Malvena, Selma Johnson, Ruth Evelyn and Erwin. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2008, at PERRY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1057 Hwy 78, Daleyville, with the Rev. Hans Floan officiating. Burial will follow at Perry Lutheran Church cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 a.m. until 10:50 a.m. prior to the service on Saturday at PERRY LUTHERAN CHURCH. The Ellestad Funeral Home, 500 N. 8th Street, Mount Horeb, is serving the family. The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Waunakee Manor for their kindness and support.

Leigh, Virginia

MINERAL POINT - Virginia A. Leigh, age 85 of Mineral Point, passed away on Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at Upland Hills Health in Dodgeville surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Nov. 30, 1922. She married Delzie Leigh on Jan. 18, 1941. She worked in previous years at Burgess Battery, Cobb Canning Factory, and the Dodge Point Country Club. She enjoyed her dog Ginny, going to church Sara Circle, visiting friends, family outings, and spending time with her kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Virginia and Delzie were blessed with 10 children, Donald (Donna) Leigh, Raymond (Carol) Leigh, Shirley (LaVerne) LaDow, all of Mineral Point, Nancy Bonjour (Curt Edwards) of Dodgeville, Donna (Ron) Hughes of Mineral Point, Linda McLaughlin (Brent Wells) of Mineral Point, John (CJ) Leigh of Argyle, Robert Leigh (Amy Sparks) and Paul (Sue) Leigh of Rewey; 26 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Delzie on Nov. 16, 1977; a son, James; a granddaughter, Dawn Frye; a great-granddaughter, Hannah Hawpe; a son-in-law, Jerry McLaughlin; and a sister-in-law, Marie Butteris. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH in Mineral Point. The Rev. Mary Anne Conklin will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Friday, July 18, 2008, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the GORGEN FUNERAL HOME in Mineral Point and on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Virginia was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She was an inspiration to everyone she touched in her life. She will be greatly missed by her children, relatives, friends and "Ginny". In lieu of flowers or memorials, donations in her name to the First United Methodist Chruch are appreciated.

WAUNAKEE/ MIDDLETON - Donald A. Paulson, age 76, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2008, at the Badger Prairie Health Care Center. Skarda, Donald A.

WISCONSIN DELLS - Donald A. Skarda, age 82 of Wisconsin Dells, Wis., died peacefully Monday, July 14, 2008, at St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo, Wis. after a long battle with lung cancer. Donald was born Aug. 25, 1925, on a farm in the Township of Wellington in Monroe County, Wis., the son of Paul J. and Caroline (Rynes) Skarda. He was proud of his Czech heritage. He graduated from high school in Ontario, Wis. in 1943 and entered the U.S. Navy in July when he was still 17 and attended Notre Dame, Murray State and the University of Georgia while in the military. He received combat training at the Long Beach Naval Station in Long Island, N.Y. This training was designed to equip sailors with the skills needed to invade foreign countries. He was stationed at Subic Bay Naval Base in Luzon, Philippines with a Navy invasion force preparing to invade the main island of Japan. He and his comrades were relieved when the news came that World War II had ended. After being honorably discharged in 1946, he enrolled at the Wisconsin Teachers College in LaCrosse, Wis. and received a B.S. degree in education in 1950. He was able to continue his education because of the G.I. Bill which was conceived and vigorously lobbied by the American Legion. Don received his M.S. degree in education from U.W. Madison in 1954. He taught school at Cochrane, Wis. for three years and for 34 years as a teacher and guidance counselor at Wisconsin Dells High School. He considered it a privilege to work with so many fine young people and dedicated colleagues for 37 years. He was an active member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, was president of the Holy Name Society and an usher for several years. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, a charter member of the Wisconsin Dells Junior Chamber of Commerce, a Boy Scout leader and assisted with Babe Ruth baseball. Don was proud of his affiliation with the Harold B. Larkin American Legion Post 187 since 1954, serving as adjutant for two years, vice commander for one year and finance officer for 20 years. He was business manager of the Stand Rock Indian Ceremonial, sponsored by the Legion Post, for 17 years and general manager for three years. He was a member of the honor guard since 1954 and was a pall bearer for a number of his deceased comrades. During his retirement he enjoyed playing cards with the "boys" at the Legion club. Don had married Marian Jacobson on June 5, 1948, at St. James Catholic Church in LaCrosse and they were blessed with three children, Donald Paul, Nancy Elizabeth and Mark Gregory. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marian, of 51 years; a son, Mark; and a great-granddaughter, Ella Jane. Don is survived by a brother, James; a sister, Kay (Art) Brieske; a son, Donald P.; a daughter, Nancy (James) Schoppenhorst; grandchildren, Christi (Todd) Cleveland, Stacy (Will) Bauer, Kori (Chad) Severson and Jessica Schoppenhorst; great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Cody, and Carlie Cleveland and Avery Severson; and Marge, a very special friend. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, July 19, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at ST. CECILIA CATHOLIC CHURCH in Wisconsin Dells with Monsignor Felix Oehrlein celebrating. Burial will be at Calvary cemetery in Wisconsin Dells with full military honors provided by the Harold B. Larkin American Legion Post 187, Wisconsin Dells. Visitation will be held at the Catholic school across the street from the church on Friday, July 18, 2008, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday at ST. CECILIA CATHOLIC CHURCH from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association. The family would like to express its gratitude to Dr. Orkfritz and her nurse, Tara (Dells Clinic); Dr. Khuu and the entire oncology staff at Dean Specialty Clinic (Baraboo); and the staff at St. Clare Hospital in the emergency department, ICU, and staff on 2nd and 3rd floors. The Picha Funeral Home and Crematory of Lake Delton, Wis. assisted the family with arrangements.
Don will be sadly missed by his family. "Dad and Grandpa, we love you."

Trainor, Eileen E.

BLUE MOUNDS - Eileen E. Trainor, age 82 of Blue Mounds, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 17, 2008, at Upland Hills Health surrounded by her family. Eileen was born on Oct. 12, 1925, on the family homestead in Blue Mounds, the daughter of Louis and Amelia (Handel) Trainor. Eileen lived on the family homestead and farmed with her family her entire life until her retirement. She was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Barneveld and of its Council of Catholic Women. Eileen was a woman of deep faith who cherished her family. She had a memory that was the envy of the whole family. Eileen is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary (John Jones) Trainor of Barneveld; and by her many, many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews who loved her so dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers and sisters, Jerome, Barbara, Leo, Frank (Helen), Joe, John, William, Catherine, Raphael, and Louis Trainor; and Mary (Peter) Clerkin, Regina (Leroy) Burns, and Peter (Mary) Trainor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2008, at IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH (formerly St. Mary's) in Barneveld, with Father David Greenfield officiating. Burial will be at St. Barnabas Catholic cemetery in Mazomanie. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, July 18, 2008, at IMMACULATION CONCEPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH where a rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. The ELLESTAD FUNERAL HOME, 500 N. 8th Street, Mount Horeb, is serving the family.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.
