McFarland, Harvey

MCFARLAND/ WISCONSIN DELLS - Harvey McFarland, age 95, died on Monday, Aug. 4, 2008. He was born to Joe and Mary McFarland on Oct. 22, 1912, in the town of Dunn. Harvey had two brothers and four sisters. He married Gwendolyn Lane in 1932. Together they had three children, Connie, Tom and Joe. Harvey lived virtually his entire life in McFarland until moving to Wisconsin Dells in 2005. He had an intimate knowledge of the history of McFarland which he enjoyed sharing with friends and family. Harvey was proud to be the grandson of the founder of McFarland, William Hugh McFarland. Harvey was a farmer, businessman and former member of the McFarland Village board. After retiring he worked part time for the McFarland School District. His greatest pleasure in his later years was being visited by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was quick with his wit and contagious smile. We were all blessed to have him here for a while. Harvey is survived by his sons, Rev. Tom (Jackie) of Oshkosh, and Joe of Wisconsin Dells; two grandchildren, Shelly and Shaun; four great-grandchildren, Ashley, Justin, Ben and Paul; and siblings, Dorothy Kolofski of Florida, and Jeanette Bump of Randolph. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn; and his daughter, Connie; brothers, Roy and Milo; and sisters, Lillian Leuth and Avenal Ditreich. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, at OLSON-HOLZHUTER-CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 5801 Highway 51, McFarland. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, at ROSELAWN MEMORIAL PARK CHAPEL, 401 Femrite Drive, Monona. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Wisconsin Council of the Blind, White Cane Fund. Pertzborn, David N.

COTTAGE GROVE - David Nicholas Pertzborn, age 81, surrounded in love by his family, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008. He was born on May 6, 1927, to John Jr. and Elizabeth (Koch) Pertzborn. His younger years were spent on the family farm in Martinsville, Wis. He married Ruth Birrenkott on May 20, 1958, in Cottage Grove. They celebrated 50 years of marriage this past May. David took great pleasure in camping, gardening, yard work, and chasing grandchildren. David served as police chief for the Village of Cottage Grove. He enjoyed retirement by working with his wife in their business Country View Ceramics. During his life he met every challenge with unyielding willpower, dignity, and faith. He had a kind and gentle spirit, always putting his family first. David was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church-Monona. David is survived by his wife, Ruth; his three daughters, Elaine Pertzborn, Janice (Craig) Faga, and Sharon Pertzborn-Jensen (John); seven grandchildren, Jason Faga, Matthew Kjin, Ryan Faga, Jennifer Kjin, Meagan Faga, Mitchell Pertzborn-Jensen, and David Pertzborn-Jensen; sisters, Marion (Hale) Grover, Thomas, Della Laufenberg, Margaret (Dave) Holmes, and Marcus (Jeri); sisters-in-law, Amy Pertzborn, Florentina Pertzborn, and Helene Pertzborn. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Rita and Joanne; and five brothers, Victor, Robert, Joseph, Fredrick and Harold; and infant son. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name can be made to the American Diabetes Association, 6400 Gisholt Drive, Suite 213, Monona, WI 53713. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CHURCH, 5101 Schofield St., Monona, with Father John Meinholz officiating. Visitation from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m., Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., with luncheon to follow. Burial following luncheon at Resurrection cemetery Chapel, 2705 Regent St., Madison.

Schaaf, Albert LaVern

MINERAL POINT - Albert LaVern Schaaf, age 88, of Mineral Point, passed away on Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, at Upland Hills Health in Dodgeville, after a short illness. He was born in Mineral Point on Sept. 27, 1919, the son of Albert and Mame (Lawinger) Schaaf. He graduated from Mineral Point High School. He married Anna Mae Berg on Sept. 21, 1944, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mineral Point. He was a lifelong farmer on the family farm in Mineral Point. He was a member of St. Mary's-St. Paul's Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 60 years. He is survived by his wife, Anna Mae; six sons, Ken of Mineral Point, Wayne (Chris) of Kewanee, Ill., Bill (Deb) of Geneseo, Ill., Norb (Cindy) and Eugene (Deb), both of Mineral Point, and Bert (Libby) of Menasha; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers-in-law, Bernie Kieffer and Michael Berg. He was preceded in death by his parents. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at ST. MARY'S-ST. PAUL'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Mineral Point. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. at the GORGEN FUNERAL HOME, Mineral Point. A Knights of Columbus rosary service will be held Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

MADISON - C. Bruce Schwengel, age 64, passed away at home on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008. A memorial service for Bruce will held at ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 322 E. Washington Ave., Madison at 11 a.m. A visitation will begin at 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Sievert, William A.

JANESVILLE - William A. Sievert, age 78, slipped away peacefully from his life here on Earth to his new heavenly home on Sunday evening, Aug. 3, 2008, at Mercy Hospital. He was born June 13, 1930, in Janesville, the son of the late Alva H. and Jeannette J. (Leng) Sievert. A Janesville resident his entire life, Bill was a part of the Janesville High School Class of 1950. On Oct. 21, 1950, Bill was united in marriage to the former Eleanor E. Johnson, who was from Cambridge. For a short time, Bill was employed by General Motors, and then he became a plasterer. He was a member of the Operative Plasterers and Cement Masons Union Local 204 for more than 50 years. During those 50 years he worked for Stanley A. Anderson Inc., and then Bolig Lath and Plastering. Upon his retirement from plastering, he worked part-time for Star Auto Parts (LKQ). Due to health problems, Bill retired from LKQ in March of this year. For nearly 50 years, Bill was a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. In his earlier years, he served on the Board of Elders, and was an active usher for many years. Bill was blessed to have a wonderful, caring church family. Many family vacations, trips, and the annual Christmas shopping weekends were enjoyed by Bill and his family. His life was blessed with a loving wife, four children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. His three daughters, Gail (Bill) Dagenhart, Joan (Ron) Seeman and Anne (fiance, Jeff Lemirande) Geldard; his son, Mark (Mary Jo) Sievert; a grandson, Bentley Geldard; his six granddaughters, Amanda (Jason) Ritter, Ashley (Jason) Cornell, Kari Jo (Josh) Biddick, Kirby Sievert, Cora Seeman and Bailey Geldard; and the most recent joys added to Bill's life were his four great-grandchildren, Carter and Cooper Ritter, Kendyl Cornell and Carson Biddick. He is further survived by his special sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Yvonne and Ken Hessenauer, Margaret and Don Cobleigh, and John and Marilyn Johnson; by many nieces and nephew; and by Darren Geldard, the father of Bentley and Bailey. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Lou Fingerson; and by his nephew, Robert Richardson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, at MOUNT CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2940 Mineral Point Ave., with the Rev. William Wagner officiating. Burial will take place in Oak Hill cemetery. Friends may call at MOUNT CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH on Wednesday evening from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., or on Thursday morning from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Memorials in his name may be made to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church Building Fund, to the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Association, or the American Kidney Fund. Stewart, Daniel J.

MADISON - Daniel J. Stewart, 40, of Madison, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, at his home. Dan was born on May 23, 1968, in Toledo, Ohio, and was the son of Lauren and Deborah (Mitchka) Stewart. Dan was awarded the Masters of Fine Arts (poetry), with honors, from the Ohio State University. He continued in his love of poetry and literature and shared this with his children. He was an accomplished photographer, a keen chess player, a great parent as a tender and loving father. Dan was an active supporter of many community organizations including Madison Ballet; Madison Country Day School, serving as the board chair; Madison Children's Museum; RSVP Madison; Planned Parenthood of Michigan; NARAL Ohio; and the Columbus Children's Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. Most recently, he was chief executive officer of Stewart Security, Inc. (Worthington, Ohio). Dan is survived by Jon, Erik, and Laura, his children with Katharina S. (Sprinkel) Stewart; his parents, Lauren and Deborah Stewart of Westerville, Ohio; his sister, Rachel St. John of Columbus, Ohio; and his nephews, Mackenzie, Joel and David. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. A private family celebration will be held. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the organizations Dan supported most passionately.

Tanke, William S.

VALPARAISO, IND. - William "Bill" S. Tanke, age 82 of Valparaiso, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara; daughter Mary; son, William; son-in-law, Andrew Juska; granddaughter, Michele Tanke-Juska; and sisters, Marjorie Knuteson, Helen Kindschi and Mary Strang. Bill was born in Portage, Wis. on Feb. 27, 1926, to William and Hattie Tanke. Bill thoroughly enjoyed every stage of his life. As a boy and young adult, he enjoyed exploring the Wisconsin River and the Wisconsin Dells with his friends. Bill served in the Air Force toward the end of World War II. He graduated from Valparaiso University with a degree in civil engineering. It was in Valparaiso that he met Barbara. Bill served as Porter County surveyor for more than 20 years and was readily recognized by the sound of his whistling echoing through the courthouse walls. Bill was a life member of the Indiana Society of Land Surveyors and served as president in 1975. Bill and Barb made their
home on a small family farm west of Valparaiso. He loved the woods, creeks, fields and ponds and spent many of his free moments there. He served on several public bodies including the Porter County Plan Commission, and the Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission. Most of Bill's hobbies and interests involved the outdoors. He loved snowmobiling in the winter, fishing in the summer and "puttering" around the farm any time of year. His smile, wit, and generosity will be missed by his family and many friends. A funeral service will be held Saturday, noon at IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1700 Monticello Park Drive, Valparaiso with the Rev. Stephen Bongard officiating and private burial to follow at Maplewood cemetery. Visitation will be on Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon directly at the church. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Bill's name to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Scholarship Fund of Indiana Society of Professional Land Surveyors.

Bays, Larry

PRAIRIE DU SAC - Larry Bays of Prairie du Sac, went peacefully to his eternal church home on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008. He found joy in reading the Word of God as well as living it. Larry enjoyed being a barber in the city of Toledo, Ohio for many years. He was a wonderful husband and best friend to his wife Frieda Bays for 34 years. He was a loving father, who along with his wife, instructed their children, Larrieda (Prentiss) Brown of Prairie du Sac and Larry Nathaniel Bays of Tampa, Fla., to follow Christ and live a life that is pleasing to the Lord. He has been a truly loving and influential grandfather to his granddaughters Lillie Ree, Neiya, Autumn and grandson Elijah Brown. He is survived by his brothers, James (Stephanie) Bays of Toledo, Ohio, Bruce Bays of Atlanta, Ga.; and special brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Denise Bare of Prairie du Sac. A special thanks to the many friends who have given tremendous support at Sauk Prairie Evangelical Free Church in Prairie du Sac, along with a host of other family and friends. Larry's favorite scripture that he said "sums up the whole Bible" is John 3:16. Funeral services will be held at SAUK PRAIRIE EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH, Prairie du Sac, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, with Pastors Tim Pietrogallo and Dwight Pulsfus officiating. Burial will follow in the Sauk City cemetery. A visitation will be held at the church, one hour prior to the service.

Fritzke, David J.

STOUGHTON - David John Fritzke, age 38, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes at his home on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008. He was born on April 24, 1970, the son of Earl and Berdette (Wiesspfennig) Fritzke. David was a graduate of Stoughton High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, for which he was gifted to earn the Wisconsin Governor's academic scholarship. He obtained a major in both German and English, and substitute taught in the Stoughton and Sun Prairie school systems. At the time of his death, David worked through the Greater University Tutoring Service, instructing foreign students in English. His joy was being able to help many foreign students with their needs as they attended classes in the U.S. David also enjoyed the many road trips that he and his dad took crisscrossing the states and also overseas to Korea and Taiwan. David is survived by his father, Earl of Stoughton; his aunt, June of Arizona; cousins; and a great number of good friends. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1996; and an uncle. Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, at OLSON-HOLZHUTER-CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 206 W. Prospect, Stoughton. Friends may greet the family from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Friday. Friends and family are invited to a luncheon following the services at the Stoughton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at St. Luke's cemetery in Elroy. Memorials may be made in David's name to the Greater University Tutoring Service.
The smiles, laughter, kindness and companionship will be missed by all the lives David touched.
