HELEN KUCHENBECKER
Helen R. Kuchenbecker, 86, Prairie du Chien, died Sunday, March 17,
2002, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 31, 1915, in Prairie du Chien, daughter of Joseph and
Mary (Feally) Novey.
She married
Earl Kuchenbecker on Sept. 1, 1934, at St. John's Church in
Prairie du Chien. Together they owned and operated the Prairie Book
Store in Prairie du Chien for many years. Earl preceded her in death on
Feb. 21, 1997.
She enjoyed painting and artwork. She was a member of St. Gabriel's
Church and the Senior Citizens Card Club.
Surviving are three sons, Bob (Ann) of Prairie du Chien, Ronnie
(Jackie) of Burlington and Jerry (Judy) of McGregor, a daughter Mary
(Bill) Duffy of Prairie du Chien; a brother Joe (Rosey) Novey of Prairie
du Chien; 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 2
great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her
parents, 2 brothers, John and Ed Novey and a sister Myra Novey.
Services were Wednesday at St. Gabriel's Church, Rev. John Wambach,
S.J. officiating, with burial in Calvary cemetery, both in Prairie du
Chien. The Garrity Funeral Home assisted the family.
FRANCISZEK SWIECH
Franciszek "Frank" Swiech, 83, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002 at the
Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.
Frank was born on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1918 in Poland. He was taken
from Poland to Germany during World War II where he performed farm
labor. In 1948 he came to America as a displaced person and worked for a
farmer who had sponsored him in Crawford County.
In 1950 Frank moved to Prairie du Chien and began employment at Campion
High School. He worked there until 1974 when Campion closed, then worked
for a short while with Martin Luther Preparatory School, which had taken
over the Campion facilities. He retired in the early 1980s and had been
a resident at the Walter Schmidt Independent Living Center in Prairie du
Chien since 1998.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Jan and Duzy Swiech, one
brother, Randolph and ;two sisters, Carolina and Rosie. He has no known
surviving relatives. His special friends were Alice Jones, formerly of
Prairie du Chien and now residing in Cave Creek, Ariz. and Connie
Christoph and Dewey Christoph, both of Prairie du Chien. He also found a
family of special friends in the staff and residents at the Walter
Schmidt Independent Living Center.
Frank was a very unassuming, friendly, quiet and reserved gentleman who
lived a very simple life. Some of the things he enjoyed most in his life
were reading his Polish Bible, his Rosary, going for walks and caring
for his plants and flowers.
Visitation was held Friday at the Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in
Prairie du Chien immediately followed by a service at the same location
and burial in Calvary cemetery, Prairie du Chien.
EDWARD ZENZ
Edward P. Zenz, 84 died Feb. 13, 2002 in Phoenix Ariz.
He born March 11, 1917 and was raised in Patch Grove.
For 31 years he served in the Army. From 1954 to 1958 he taught ROTC at
Campion. Later he served as assistant treasurer there from 1968 to 1974.
After 1974 he resided in Phoenix.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie, daughter Susan (Thomas) Macken of
Wausau; son Michael (Cathy) Zenz of Gurnee Ill; sister Margaret Bergner
of St. Louis Mo.; brother Frederick Zenz of Lancaster; 6 grandchildren
and 2 great grandchildren.
MYRLE GLESSNER
Myrle O. Glessner, 83, of Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center died
Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at the Care Center, Waterloo, Iowa.
HAROLD RASMUSSEN
Harold J. Rasmussen, 88, Prairie du Chien, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002
at the Cedar Springs Health Care Center in Cedarburg.
Harold was born Aug. 23, 1913 in Beloit, son of Julius and Agnes
(Henes) Rasmussen. He married
Helen Felton April 10, 1941.
He worked as supervisor for Badger Ordinance in Baraboo from 1941 to
1945. His educational field began as principal of schools in Danbury for
one year. He spent three years as a science teacher and coach in Lone
Rock, and later taught chemistry and physics for one year in Mosinee. He
then taught chemistry and physics at the Prairie du Chien High School
until 1968. In 1968 he became the guidance counselor at Prairie du Chien
where he held that position until his retirement in 1983.
Since 1983 he enjoyed his retirement with Helen employing his winter
months in Lake Wales, Fla. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge
106 where he served as the Master of Lodge in 1955. He was a Kiwanian
for 15 years and served as Lt. Gov. and secretary for 15 years. His
hobbies included golf, choir, camping and fishing.
Surviving are his wife Helen, Prairie du Chien, one son Larry (Cathy)
Rasmussen of Indianapolis, Ind., one daughter Lynda (Allen) Polachowski
of West Bend; six grandchildren, Stacy, Mike, Chris, Kyleigh, Nicholas
and Macey; two great grandchildren, Jake and Grace. He was preceded in
death by his parents and one sister Bette Halvorson.
Services were Saturday, at the United Methodist Church, Rev. Stuart
Allen officiating with burial in Evergreen cemetery, both in Prairie du
Chien. The Garrity Funeral Home assisted the family.
LAWRENCE BENISH. SR.
Lawrence C. Benish, Sr., 89, Onalaska, formerly of Prairie du Chien,
died Saturday, March 2, 2002 at St. Francis Medical Center in La Crosse.
Lawrence was born Aug. 21, 1912 on Limery Ridge, near Prairie du Chien
to Louis and Jessie (Wachuta) Benish. He married
Dorothy Torgeson on
Oct. 12, 1940 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They lived in
Winona, Minn. for 27 years and have been living in Onakaska for the past
25 years.
He was a salesman for the Morman Manufacturing Company for many years
in Winona County, Minn. He was a man of high moral character and
principals and thought of his customers as his friends, always wanting
people to succeed.
Surviving are his wife Dorothy; two sons, Lawrence C. Benish, Jr. of
Onalaska, Jerry D. (Sheryl) Benish of LaCrescent, Minn.; three
grandchildren, Allison, Kirstin and Audra; two brothers, Lavern Benish
of Dickeyville, Robert (Phyllis) Benish of La Crosse; four sisters,
Bernice Wellendorf, Helen Noethe, Gloria Schmidt, Doris (Bill) Buening
all of Prairie du Chien; two brothers-in-law, George Kalina, Prairie du
Chien and Leo Falb, Elgin, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his
parents, a brother John of Cochrane and three sisters, Leona Becwar,
Margie Kalina and Evelyn Falb.
Services are Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m. at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home
with burial in Evergreen cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may
call from 9:30 until time of services.
CHARLES WALL
Charles R. Wall, 83, Eastman, died Friday, March 1, 2002 at his home.
He was born Feb. 26, 1919 in Eastman, son of Charles and Mary
(Prochaska) Wall.
He farmed in the Eastman area and was an accomplished carpenter.
He married
Alma Stluka on Oct. 11, 1944 at St. Wenceslaus Church in
Eastman.
Surviving are his wife Alma of Eastman; four sons, Ronald of Stoddard,
Roger (Gloria) of Eastman, Charlie (Barbara) and David (Shirley) both of
Prairie du Chien; three daughters, Mary (Butch) Pedretti and Nancy
(Dallas) Valley both of Prairie du Chien and Gail (Terry) Coorough of
DeForest; one sister, Ann Gerlach of Bloomington; two sisters-in-law,
Marie Wall, Prairie du Chien and Maxine Wall of Eastman; 22
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces
and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers,
Joseph and Bernard and one brother-in-law, Robert Gerlach; and one
granddaughter Trudy Ann Trautsch.
Services are Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church,
Msgr. John McCarthy officiating with burial in the St. Wenceslaus
cemetery, both in Eastman. Friends may call Monday from 4 - 8 p.m. at
the Garrity Funeral Home where there will be a rosary at 8 p.m. In lieu
of flowers memorials are preferred.
RUSSELL STEINER
Russell M. Steiner, 40, Prairie du Chien, died March 1, 2002 as a
result of a one vehicle accident.
Russell was born Sept. 3, 1961 in Prairie du Chien to William L. and C.
Marlene (Loney) Steiner. He graduated from Prairie High School in 1980
and from the College of Engineering at UW-Madison in 1984. He held
engineering licenses in Wisconsin, Colorado and Arizona. He worked for
Sargent & Lundy of Chicago, Ill., Westbrook & Associated and Edward
Kraemer & Sons both in Plain.
For the past ten years he was owner/president of Acme Construction,
A.C. Utility Co. and SMK, LLC all companies that he established. He
loved his work and enjoyed a challenge. He received the 2001 Concrete
Structures Award for the Markley Hollow Bridge on CTH C on the Great
River Road. He was a member of the Prairie du Chien Police and Fire
commission.
Surviving are his girl friend of seven years, Kari Haun of Viroqua; his
father, William L. Steiner, Prairie du Chien; two brothers Garith
(Julie) Steiner of Viroqua, Karl Steiner of Prairie du Chien; one
sister, Rev. Stephanie Steiner, Viroqua; three nieces he loved dearly,
Sarah, Megan and Kiernan Steiner, all of Viroqua. He was preceded in
death by his mother, C. Marlene in February, 1997.
The family wishes memorials be made in the RMS Engineering scholarship
Fund or to Vernon Memorial Hospital, Viroqua.
Services are Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran
Church, with burial in Evergreen cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien.
Friends may call Monday from 4-8 p.m. at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home
and one hour prior to services at the church.
