CALVIN MESSLING
Calvin "Kelly" E. Messling, 73, of Soldiers Grove, passed away Friday,
Nov. 28, 2003, at the Vernon Manor, Viroqua. He was born Jan. 24, 1930
in Seneca, son of Ernest and Cynthia (Heisz) Messling. After school
he was a farmer, mechanic, and a stock car driver, his greatest passion.
He entered the service in 1951, during the Korean Conflict and was stationed
in Germany. He returned home after being critically injured in a vehicle
accident in 1953 that left him visually handicapped. He married
Marilyn Knutson,
August 31, 1957 at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, Gays Mills. He and Marilyn
operated the Coryis Grill in Soldiers Grove for a short time. They perform
together as the "Country Runabouts Band" for several years before renal failure,
which he battled for nearly six years and heart failure. He was a member of Our
Saviors Lutheran Church, Soldiers Grove, and the Running Johnson Ray VFW Post #3032,
Viroqua. Kelly is survived by his wife, Marilyn, Soldiers Grove; three daughters,
Carn (Dennis) Murphy, Waukon, Iowa, Kimberly (Thomas) Coates, Janesville and
Lareena (Jaaren) Riebe, Prairie du Chien; and six grandchildren, Misty and Lee Coates,
Janesville, and Anne, Jaalen, Alissa and Allison Riebe, Prairie du Chien; two brothers,
Bob (Ruth Ann) Messling, Mt. Sterling and Ronnie (WhiteyÓ (Rita) Messling, Viroqua;
three sisters, Julia (Weldon) Larmore, Boscobel, Bernice (Harry) Cooper, Patch Grove and
Harriett Jeidy, Mineral Point; by two sisters-in-law, Elaine Barton, Steuben and
Margie Messling, Prairie du Chien. He was preceded in death by his parents, a loving son,
Kevin in 1993, brothers, Paul, Edwin (Bud), Roger (Blackie) and an infant sister. Services
will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, in Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Soldiers Grove,
Rev. Helen Johnson officiating with burial with military rites by the Running Johnson
Ray VFW Post in the Gays Mills cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4-8 p.m. at the
Dommersnaes Bertram Family Funeral Home, Gays Mills and at the church on Tuesday from 1 p.m.
until time of services.
DOUGLAS DREIER
Douglas David Dreier, Farmersburg, Iowa, infant son of Eugene Dreier and
Katherine Schmitt , passed away Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at the Gundersen
Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI. He was born Nov. 25, 2003 in
Prairie du Chien. He is survived by his parents Eugene and Katherine of
Farmersburg, Iowa, paternal grandfather Eugene (Barb) Dreier of McGregor,
maternal grandparents; Bebee Jones of Prairie du Chien, and
Frederick (Kim) Schmitt of Viola, along with numerous loving aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother Sally Dreier. Funeral services
were Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 at 1 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel in Prairie du Chien,
Rev. Doug Mathison officiating, with burial in the Postville cemetery in Postville, Iowa.
KELCY JONES
Kelcy Camille Jones, 19, of Luana, Iowa., died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, in the Vets
Hospital in Waukon following a long illness. Memorial services were held at 2:30 p.m.,
Sunday, November 30, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on Highway 9 two miles west of Waukon.
MORRIS SNIDER
Morris R. Snider, 47, Gays Mills, passed away at his home, Monday, Dec. 8, 2003,
following a brief illness. He was born in Iowa City, Iowa, son of Marvin and
Gethel (McNabb) Snider, on May 11, 1956. Morris was a professional cook for the
University of Iowa for over 25 years; he also worked at the Miss Marquette,
Marquette, Iowa; he has also worked at Halpin Tire, Prairie du Chien,
Richardson Trucking, Boscobel and was a chef at Central Express, Westby.
He was very active in the Prairie du Chien Rendezvous and was an avid deer hunter.
He loved to hunt with his friends. He married
Mildred (Millie) Wild, July 17, 1999,
at the Gays Mills United Methodist Church. Morris is survived by his wife, Millie, Gays Mills;
a son Jacob Snider, Lone Tree, Iowa; by his parents, Marvin and Gethel (McNabb) Snider, Nevada, Mo.;
a brother, Russ (Marge) Snider, Camanche, Iowa; two sisters, Jackie (Ira) Leffler, Washington, Iowa
and Barb Snider, Nevada, Iowa; by two step daughters, Reagan and Tara; and by six step
grandchildren; and his father-in-law, Millard Wild, Lansing, Iowa. He was preceded in death
by his grandparents, an infant sister, Marvil; and his mother-in-law, Jean Wild in 2002.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Dommersnaes Bertram Family Funeral Home, Gays Mills,
Pastor Nancy Allen of Gays Mills, United Methodist Church will officiate with burial to follow
in the Gays Mills cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home and
on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
ROGER HORSTMAN
Roger H. Horstman, 67, of La Crosse passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003.
He was born in Wyalusing Township, on May 11, 1936, to Harry W. and Lela B. (Harville) Horstman.
He was united in marriage to Virginia Gillitzer in Prairie du Chien on Sept. 1, 1962. Roger
served in the U.S. Navy from January 1955, to December 1958, and his final assignment was as
an electrician's mate first class on the USS Intrepid. Following graduation from
Milwaukee Institute of Technology in 1963, he was employed in the Research and Development Lab
of the Trane Company. In 1973, until his retirement in August of 1998, he was employed at
Western Wisconsin Technical College as program director and instructor in the HVAC Program.
He was a long time member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and Mary, Mother of the Church Parish
and a member of Thomas Rooney VFW Post 1530. Roger served as a technical consultant for the
Wisconsin Innovation Service Center, served on the Electrical Board and Harbor Committee for
the City of La Crosse and on the State Watershed Committee. He was a La Crosse County Board
Supervisor representing the 16th District from March 1991 to April 2002. In addition to his
wife of 41 years, he is survived by two daughters, Jill (Scott) Thorvilson of Rochester, Minn.
and Amy Horstman (Michael Smith) of Vancouver, Wash.; two sons, Michael R. (Sheila) Horstman
and Andrew (Lisa) Horstman both of La Crosse; five grandsons, Zachary and Jacob Horstman, Erik,
Jon and Alex Thorvilson; three granddaughters, Katherine Thorvilson, Elizabeth and Natalie Horstman;
an uncle, Keith (Ruby) Harville of Sun City, Ariz.; an aunt Naldeen Harville of Prairie du Chien
and many cousins. He was preceded in death by an infant son Anthony in 1963, a sister,
Gail Horstman in 1987, his father in 1988 and his mother in 2000. A Mass of Christian Burial
will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Mary, Mother of Church Parish at
St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Rev. David Kunz officiating. Entombment with military honors
by Thomas Rooney VFW Post 1530 will follow at the Catholic cemetery. Friends may call Friday
from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse where a Christian wake
service will be held at 6:15 p.m. and again at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until
time of services. The family requests that memorials be directed to St. Clare Health Mission,
Gundersen-Lutheran Cancer Center or Gundersen-Lutheran Hospice Program.
DONALD PRESTON
Donald D. Preston, 70, of Arkansas, formerly of Boscobel, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003,
at Proctor Hospital in Peoria. He was born Feb. 25, 1933 in Madison to Charles C. and
Augusta Trumm Preston, he married
Louise Canova in 1981. She died in 1988. He was an
Army veteran. He was district manager for Proctor and Gamble, retiring in 1988. Surviving
are his mother and stepfather, Augusta and Ora Rider of Wauzeka; one daughter,
Christy (Dr. Bob) Holder of Bentonville, Arkansas; and one sister, Lois (Louis) Demanes of
Peoria, Ill. He was also preceded in death by his father. Cremation has been accorded.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wauzeka,
where visitation was one hour before. The Cremation Society of Mid-Illinois Company was
in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 107 Dousman,
Wauzeka, Wis. 53826.
DOROTHY HUTCHCROFT
Dorothy W. Hutchcroft, 86, of Bloomington died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at the Lancaster
Care Center. She was born Oct. 26, 1917, in Bloomington township, the daughter of John and
Anna Caroline (Mason) Krantz. She graduated from Bloomington High School in 1936.
On Sept. 11, 1965, she married
William Hutchcroft at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
He preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 1986. Dorothy was a beautician most of her life.
She owned and operated her beauty shop in Bloomington. She was a member of the Bloomington
United Methodist Church and helped with many of the ladies' activities. She also enjoyed
traveling and crocheting. She is survived by a niece, Virginia (Robert "GabbyÓ) Walz, Bagley;
two nephews, Vernon (Lois) Krantz, Lancaster; and Fred Krantz, Madison; and many great-nieces,
great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband,
William; her parents; four brothers, Arnie, Lloyd, Ora and Art; and a niece-in-law, Deanna Krantz.
Funeral services were Monday at the Martin Page Funeral Home in Bloomington, Rev. David Leistra
officiating with burial in Blakes Prairie cemetery, Bloomington township.
DALE MARSO
Dale F. Marso, 75, a retired machinist for Universal Eng., died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at
Ocala Regional Medical Center, Ocala, Florida. He was a native of Wisconsin, moved to Florida
from Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1991. He was a member of the Queen of Peace Catholic Church and
American Legion Post 354. He loved traveling, sports, fishing and hunting. He was a U.S. Army
veteran of the Korean Conflict. Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Theresa M. Marso, Ocala,
and his beloved pets, Buffy, Bimbo, Mr. Webster, Nellie, Queen Smokey, Sam and Mikie; three sisters,
Bobbie Blum, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Millie Curley, Madison, and Nan Turner, Solon, Iowa.
INEZ RUHSER
Inez W. Ruhser, 86, of Prairie du Chien, formerly of Clayton County, Iowa died Monday,
Nov. 10, 2003, at Prairie Health Care Center in Prairie du Chien. She was born Dec. 5, 1916,
in Clayton County to Ben and Ernestine (Meenan) Funk. She married
Willy Ruhser on Oct. 30, 1935
in Clayton County. She lived most of her life in the Clayton Center area and had been living
the past several years in Prairie du Chien. She donated her body to the University of Iowa
Medical School in appreciation for their help and care she received during her cancer treatment.
Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Virginia (Ruhser) Moore of Round Rock, Texas; three grandchildren,
Brett Ruhser of Hawaii, Scot Ruhser in Texas, and Erik Ruhser in Colorado and four
great-grandchildren and several cousins. There will be no services. Memorials may be
directed to Zion Lutheran Church at Clayton Center, Iowa or the Cornerstone Four Square Church in Prairie du Chien.
