Mrs. Jennie M. Hempelmann

Mrs. Jennie Hempelmann, of Cedar Communities, formerly of Port Washington, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, June 10, 2004. She was 98 years old. Jennie was born on June 6, 1906 in Bessemer, MI, daughter of Alfredo and Maria Antonino Bartelli. She was united in marriage with Mr. Lincoln Hempelmann in Milwaukee on February 26, 1930. The couple moved to Port Washington in 1935. He preceded her in death in 1987. Jennie was a member of Friedens Evangelical Church in Port Washington, and was a very active member for many years. She enjoyed playing bridge with her bridge club and was known for her homemade spaghetti. She is survived by her children, Lincoln (Emily Lopez) Hempelman of Honolulu, HI, and Shirley (Robert) Niesen of Bradenton, FL, 3 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 1 cousin, Gloria Freeman of Madison, WI, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by 2 brothers, 1 sister and 1 grandson. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at Friedens Ev. Church, 454 N. Milwaukee St, Port Washington. Rev. Donald Zahurance will officiate. The family will receive visitors at the church for one hour before the start of services.

Ms. Carolyn R. Lord

Mrs. Carolyn Lord, of Woodridge Drive in Grafton, passed away at Columbia-St. Mary’s Ozaukee Campus in Mequon in the early morning hours, Friday, June 11, 2004. She was 63. Carolyn was born in Milwaukee on March 16, 1941, daughter of George C. and Muriel R. Johnson Lord. Ms. Lord was a very active lady who enjoyed helping other people. She spent much time in the health care industry, and worked in many local hospitals. She was a floor manager in the Burn Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee, a Respiratory Therapist, worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital and also at Lasata Nursing Home. In the last few years she had devoted much of her time working at Girl’s Homes in the Stevens Point area as a caregiver. Carolyn did a lot of volunteer work in the Ozaukee County area, taught Bahai Children’s Classes and was very active in the Bahai community. Carolyn was a very artistic lady, and was also known amongst her family as “The Greatest of All Aunts”, reflecting how much time she spent with her thirteen nieces and nephews and how involved she was with their lives. She is survived by her brothers and sisters: Nancy (Len) Malvick of West Bend, Barbara (George) Deverse of Inyokern, CA, Kenneth Lord of Milwaukee, Robert (Anne Judge) Lord of Amherst Junction and 1 sister-in-law, Jeannie Lord (the late Carlton) of Waubeka. She is further survived by her nieces and nephews: Mara Lord of Seattle, WA, Megan (Michael) Van Blaricum of Minneapolis, MN, Zoe Lord of Waubeka, Alison Malvick of Orlando, FL, Blythe Malvick of West Bend, Justin (Yutein) Deverse of Portland, OR, Jessica and Jonathon Deverse, both of Inyokern, CA, Brandon Lord of Boca Raton, FL, Benjamin Lord of Florida, Madison Rose Lord of Milwaukee, Devin and Ian Judge-Lord, both of Amherst Junction, and 4 great-nieces and nephews: Sterling and Joshua Deverse, Marah and Jazz Van Blaricum, other relatives and many, many friends. In keeping with the Bahai faith, her funeral services were held the day of her death, Friday, June 11, 2004. She has been laid to rest next to her parents in Valhalla cemetery in Milwaukee. Carolyn was an amazing woman who touched many peoples lives. She will be deeply missed.

HELEN B. AULTMAN

Mrs. Helen Aultman, of Heritage Nursing Home in Port Washington, formerly of Saukville, died peacefully Tuesday evening, June 8, 2004. She was 92 years old. Helen was born on September 9, 1911 in Bluffton, Minnesota, daughter of John and Mary Laubach Ertz. On October 16, 1937 she was untied in marriage to Frank Aultman in Bluffton, Minnesota. He preceded her in death on June 19, 1992. Helen worked as a parts picker for Power Products for over 20 years. She was an active member at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, partaking in various church groups. She also enjoyed gardening and traveling in Europe. Mrs. Aultman is survived by her son, Roger (Marlene) Aultman of Port Washington and two brothers, Roy (June) Ertz of Minneapolis, MN and Richard (Judy) Ertz of California. She is further survived by one granddaughter, Debra (Charles) Maxon Fechter, two great-grandchildren, Michael and Melissa Maxon, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, an infant child, 4 sisters and 5 brothers. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 12, 1 PM at the Eernisse Funeral Home, 1600 W. Grand Ave., in Port Washington. Father Karl Acker will officiate. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at St. Mary’s Mausoleum in Port Washington. The family will receive visitors at the Funeral Home, Saturday June 12, from 11AM until 1PM.

DANTE L. VALENTI

Mr. Dante Valenti of Port Washington, formerly of Milwaukee, passed away surrounded by his family at Ellen’s Home in Port Washington. He was 84 years old. Dante was born on March 15, 1920 in Burgess, Missouri to William and Theresa Rubatt Valenti. After high school Mr. Valenti entered the US Navy and served at a gunner on PT boats in the Pacific Theatre during World War II., Mr. Valenti was a boxer, winning the Wisconsin Heavyweight Championship Golden Gloves in 1939. He went pro after leaving the service and boxed in California for a few years before retiring. He settled in the Milwaukee area and went to work for AO Smith, retiring after 32 years. He moved to Port Washington in 1969. Dante was a member of the Steelworkers Union, an avid Brewers fan, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and taking care of his grandchildren. He taught himself High German and then traveled to Europe to make use of his language skills. He is survived by his 6 daughters: Mary Jo (Michael) Gracz of Oregon, WI, Nanc (Gerald Wester) Valenti of Cedarburg, Christine Valenti of Washington DC, Theresa (Kenneth) Rismeyer of Medford, WI, Jayne (the late Jack) Miller of Eugene, OR and Patti of Texas. He is further survived by 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 1 brother, Joseph (Jean) Valenti of Jennings, LA, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by 1 brother, Florian Valenti. Funeral Services will be held for Dante on Thursday, June 3, 2004 7PM at Eernisse Funeral Home in Port Washington. Chaplain Cheryl Matusiak will officiate. Interment will take place in St. Mary’s cemetery, Port Washington. The family will receive visitors at the Funeral Home on Thursday, June 3rd from 3-7PM. Dante’s family wishes to extend their appreciation to his family at Ellen’s Home, Heartland Hospice and a special thanks to Ken Schmitz, Ann Platt and Lynn.

Raymond Bender

Montmorenci, IN - Raymond C. Bender, age 96, of West Lafayette, Indiana, died at 5:35 A.M., Saturday May 29th, at University Place where he had been a resident for the past 10 months. He was born on May 15th, 1908, on the Bender Family Farm in Shelby Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. He was the son of Charles J. and Grace Slaughter Bender.

Raised to farm work, he developed a deep interest and love for the land and history. The Kickapoo Indian Trail ran through the family farm and as a child he gathered many Indian arrowheads on the land. He attended Asbury one-room school and graduated from Montmorenci High School at age 15. He earned a B.A. Degree at Wabash College and graduated in 1928. He received an M.S. degree from Butler University in 1950. He did post graduate work at Purdue and Indiana State Universities. During his teaching career, he was awarded two fellowships, one from the Lafayette Journal and Courier, to attend a newspaper workshop at the University of Iowa and another fellowship to attend Rensselear Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.

During the depression years from 1928 to 1934, he worked on the home farm and from 1934 to 1943 he taught History, English, Government, Economics and Speech at Montmorenci High School. He also directed plays and coached Junior High basketball. His winners in speech were Tippecanoe County champions. In 1943, Raymond moved on to Lafayette Jefferson High School where he taught history, government, economics and Modern Indiana Life, until 1971, when he took early retirement after teaching for 37 years to engage in farm sales and farm land management. At Lafayette Jefferson High School, he developed a course curriculum for seniors not continuing their education called Modern Indiana Life. It was offered for many years at Jefferson and other high schools in the state fashioned similar courses after it. At Jefferson High School, he served as supervisor of practice teachers for Purdue University and Indiana State University from 1943 to 1971. Fifty-five students, student teachers were trained in his classes, many of them now teaching all over the United States.

At Jefferson High School, he was the sponsor of the Future Teachers’ Club of America for many years. Many of these students are now outstanding teachers or principals.

For many years, he was chairman of the Social Studies Department at Jefferson High School and served as Chairman of the Legislative Committee of the Lafayette Education Association. In his retirement, he also served as Chairman of the Tippecanoe-Benton County Retired Teachers Association. Raymond was a member of the Indiana Historical Society, Lafayette Historical Association and Shelby Township Historical Corporation. For thirty-seven years, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Tippecanoe County Historical Society and in 1987, he was named Governor Emeritus. He was active and one of the founders of the Shelby Township Historical Corporation since 1975. He played a vital role in the 1979 Sesquicentennial Celebration in Montmorenci and he served for many years as chairman of the board of the corporation. He wrote several historical articles that were published and enjoyed writing stories of his life on the farm. As a member of the Lafayette Historical Association, he was involved for many years with giving a lecture each October at Fort Quiotenon. He served as chairman of the signs and markers committee for the association. Under his direction, many historical signs were erected including Prophetstown, Roebuck Homestead, Mayo Brothers and John T. McCutcheon markers. With the Shelby Township historical Corporation he helped them erect markers at various one-room school sites in the township. Until recently, he helped plan programs and gather supporters for the historical corporation. In 1963, he was listed in the Who’s Who in Indiana. From 1953 to 1993 he was a licensed real estate and insurance salesman in Indiana. He was still involved in family farm management until his death.

In 1931, he became a member of the Green Hill Lodge #455 and served as the Grand Master in 1938. In 2002, he received an honorary past master award from the lodge for being a 65 year past master. For 75 years, he was a member of the Montmorenci United Methodist Church, where he was chairman of the Board of Trustees and adult Sunday school teacher for many years. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Lafayette, Indiana.

On May 15, 2003 Raymond was awarded the State of Indiana‘s highest honor, being named a Sagamore of the Wabash by the late Governor of Indiana, Frank O’Bannon. On April 7, 2004 he was honored by the Lafayette School Corporation and inducted into their Wall of Fame.

Raymond met Sarah Rankin while teaching at Montmorenci School. They were married on August 10, 1942. They both taught school for many years in Tippecanoe County Schools. Sarah died in 1996. He is survived by their daughter Grace LaChey (fiancée Marc Eernisse) and granddaughter Elizabeth Leigh LaChey, of Mequon, Wisconsin. Further survived by cherished relatives, many dear friends and former students.

William A. Kammerer

Mr. Bill Kammerer, of East Moraine Hills Drive in West Bend, formerly of Grafton, passed away peacefully at his residence Saturday morning, May 29, 2004. He was 81 years old. Bill was born on January 1, 1923 in Fort Wayne, IN, son or Irwin and Bertha Engelbrecht Kammerer. After finishing his schooling Mr. Kammerer entered the US Army and served overseas during World War II with the 34th Infantry, spending time in Africa and Italy. After his return from the service he married Florence Novean on August 30, 1946 in Woodstock, IL. The couple eventually settled in Grafton and Bill worked as a service manager at Tecumseh Products, handling the nationwide Sears & Roebuck account. Mr. Kammerer was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Grafton and the American Legion Rose Harms Post #355. He enjoyed woodcarving, Indy 500 Racing, fishing, hunting and traveling to Florida in the winter. He is survived by his wife, Florence, of West Bend, his granddaughter, Tiffany (Robert Bursek) La Pointe of Portage, MI, son-in-law James (the late Susan Anne) La Pointe of Grafton, 2 sisters, Anna (Willard) Hughes of Cincinnati, OH and Herma Hartmann of Hood River, OR, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at 7PM at the Eernisse Funeral Home in Port Washington. Rev. Larry Prahl will officiate. Interment will take place the next day at St. Paul cemetery in Grafton. The family will receive visitors at the Funeral Home Wednesday from 5-7PM. Memorials are suggested to the St. Paul Hezekiah Fund.

Bernice A. Kolberg

Mrs. Bernice Kolberg, age 86 years of Marengo, IL passed away on Tuesday May 25, 2004 at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee Campus in Mequon, WI. She was born in Marengo on January 8, 1918 daughter of the late Henry Zickuhr and Augusta Krueger Zickuhr. On November 12, 1938 she married Erhardt Kolberg at Zion Lutheran Church in Marengo. He preceded her in death in 2002. Mrs. Kolberg was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, and also belonged to the Ladies Aid and the Altar Guild, as well as other church groups. She is survived by her daughter Kay (Blaine) Hilgendorf of Cedarburg, WI and three granddaughters Jessica, Jordan and Melissa Hilgendorf. She is further survived by two sisters-in-law Eleanor Kolberg and Lisa Zickuhr, her special friends Edna Ham and Hazel Beyer, other relatives and friends. Special thanks to Sue Ettner for all her help and support. Funeral services will be held on Sunday May 30, 2004 3 PM at Zion Lutheran Church 412 Jackson St. Marengo with Rev.Glen Borhart officiating. Visitation will be from 1-3PM at the church. Burial will take place in Marengo City cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church in Marengo. The directors and staff of Eernisse Funeral Home, Port Washington, WI is assisting the family.

Elizabeth L. Domroehs “Betty”

Mrs. Betty Domroehs age 82 years of Port Washington, formerly of Fond du Lac, passed away in the early morning hours of Friday, May 21, 2004 at the home of her daughter. She was born in Fond du Lac on November 13, 1921, daughter of the late Otto Braun and Gladys Longdin Braun Tuttle. Mrs. Domroehs was a 1939 graduate of Goodrich High School in Fond du Lac. On April 8, 1947 she married Edward Domroehs at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on April 22, 1958. Betty was a life-long member of St. Patrick’s, the Gold Star Wives of America and the American Ex-Prisoners of War. She enjoyed needlepoint, ceramics, playing bingo, and doing puzzles. Mrs. Domroehs is survived by her daughter Nancy (Dan) Santee of Port Washington, two grandchildren Heather Santee Buttrum of Glendale and Aaron Santee of Port Washington, three great-grandchildren Sara, Hunter and Rebecca “Becky” Buttrum. She is further survived by one brother Earl S. Tuttle of Houston, TX, two sisters Mary (the late Lyle) Gransee of Sunnyvale, CA and Helen Braun of San Antonio, TX, loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and stepfather Earl J. Tuttle. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday May 25, 2004, 6:30 PM at St. Simon’s the Fisherman Church 3448 Green Bay Road Port Washington, with Father Julian Hills officiating. Burial will take place at Estabrooks cemetery in Fond du Lac on Wednesday May 26 at 10:00 AM with Father Edward Sippel officiating. Visitation will take place at St. Simon’s the Fisherman Church on Tuesday from 5:30 PM until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials suggested.

LENORE R. HOEPPNER

Mrs. Lenore Hoeppner, of the Harbor Club in Port Washington, died peacefully Wednesday evening, May 19, 2004 at Columbia - St. Mary’s Hospital in Mequon. She was 89 years old. Lenore was born July 24, 1914 in Saukville, daughter of George and Ida Roskoph Leider. She was united in marriage with Alvin Thome on October 3, 1931 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Port Washington. He preceded her in death. She later married Elwood Hoeppner. He preceded her in death in 1984. Lenore spent many years as a cook in the Union Grove School District. Mrs. Hoeppner was a long time member of St. Mary’s Church. She also enjoyed bowling, golfing and was an accomplished traveler. She is survived by her two daughters, Shirley (Marvin) Parlow, and Carol (George) Lucas, both of Port Washington, 6 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She is further survived by two sister-in-laws, Edna Leider and Audrey Leider, both of Armstrong, WI. She is preceded in death by her husbands, one grandson, four brothers and one sister. Funeral Services will be held Sunday, May 23, 4PM at the Eernisse Funeral Home, 1600 W. Grand Ave., Port Washington. Father James Ernster will officiate. Interment will be in Union cemetery, Port Washington. The family will receive visitors at the Funeral Home Sunday from 2 until 4PM.

JOSEPH L. BOYEA

Mr. Joseph Boyea, recently of Hillcrest Road in Saukville, formerly of Milwaukee, passed away Sunday morning, May 16, 2004, at Cedar Springs Health and Rehabilitation Center in Cedarburg. He was 86 years old. Joe was born in Racine on September 12, 1917, son of Joseph L and Caroline Schruben Boyea. On June 10, 1942 he was united in marriage with Doris T. Plutz in Black Creek, WI. She preceded him in death in 1985. The couple settled in the Milwaukee area and Mr. Boyea went to work at Perfex, now AAF-McQuay Inc. in Milwaukee where he worked as a solderer / seamer. He retired after more than 40 years in 1982. Mr. Boyea was an avid reader who enjoyed learning about current events. He was often seen “supervising” at Stevlin’s Hardware Store and was also well known for collecting and recycling metal of all types. He is survived by his nine children: Andrea of Moorehead, MN, Jeffrey (Kathleen) of Alexander, NC, Linda of Saukville, Steven (Julie) of Port Washington, Phillip (Pam) of Winchester, WI, Timothy (Christine) of New Berlin, Randall (Debra) of Sussex, Daniel (Leann) of Cedarburg and Julianna Boyea of Austin, TX. He is further survived by 13 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 1 sister, Margaret Fiestedt of New London, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife and 1 sister, Ruth Plutz. Funeral Services will be held Friday, May 21, leaving from the Funeral Home at 5PM and going to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Port Washington for Mass of Christian Burial at 5:30PM. Father Allan Sommer will officiate. Entombment will take place in St. Adalbert cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the Eernisse Funeral Home Friday, May 21, from 2-5PM.

Roland A. Krull

Mr. Roland Krull, of North Milwaukee St. in Port Washington, died at Columbia-St. Mary’s Ozaukee Campus in Mequon early Friday morning, May 14, 2004. He was 60 years old. Roland was born November 8, 1943 in Milwaukee, son of Edward and Simone Sauvy Krull. He entered the US Army after high school. On November 28, 1964 he was united in marriage with Nancy Callan in Milwaukee. Mr, Krull most recently had worked as an assembler at Simplicity in Port Washington. He was an avid reader and sports fan, enjoyed baseball and loved animals. Roland was also a history buff. He is survived by his wife Nancy of Port Washington, their children Susan (Richard) Merkel of Slinger, Roland “Ron” (Beate) Weiss-Krull of Portland, OR and James (Carine) Krull of New Berlin. He is further survived by 3 grandchildren: Brian, Katie and Alena, 1 brother, Edward, and 7 sisters: Rosemary, Pauline, Alice, Joanne, Beverly, Jackie and Audrey, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by 1 sister, Vivian. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at the Eernisse Funeral Home in Port Washington. Father James Ernster will officiate. Interment will take place in Holden East cemetery, Port Washington. The family will receive visitors at the Funeral Home Tuesday from 1-2PM. Memorials are suggested to the Ozaukee Humane Society.

KENNETH J. OLSZEWSKI

Mr. Ken Olszewski of North Dries St., Saukville, died unexpectedly at his residence on Tuesday morning, May 11, 2004. He was 50 years old. Ken was born on February 1, 1954 in Milwaukee, son of Albert and Margaret Naczek Olszewski. He went to work for WH Brady as a printer and was with the company for more than thirty years. Ken was united in marriage to Cheri Laumann on May 11, 1974 in Theinsville He was an avid Packers fan and also enjoyed fishing and bowling. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Cheri, 1 daughter, Heather Olszewski of Milwaukee, 1 son, Erik Olszewski of Saukville and his parents: Margaret Olszewski of West Bend and Albert Olszewski of Rhinelander. He is further survived by a granddaughter, Kyra Guyton of Milwaukee, 2 sisters: Joanne Parks of Milwaukee, Cheryl (Richard Schroeder) Olszewski of West Bend, 4 brothers: Jerry (Sue) of Slinger, Ron (Denise) of West Bend, Greg (Mary Jo) of Greenfield and Gary Olszewski of Grafton, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2PM on Saturday, May 15, 2004 at Eernisse Funeral Home, 1600 W. Grand Ave., Port Washington. Father James Ernster will officiate. The family will receive visitors at the Funeral Home Saturday from 11AM until the time of service.

Donald L. Sherron

Mr. Don Sherron of Foster Road in Saukville passed away early Tuesday morning, May 11, 2004, at St. Mary’s Hospice in Milwaukee after a valiant struggle with esophageal cancer. He was 55 years old. Don was born in Lamar, Missouri on May 17, 1948, son of Isabelle Gariss Sherron. After graduating from high school, he joined the US Marine Corps and served his country in Viet Nam. Mr. Sherron was a supervisor in the IT Department at DRS Technologies in Milwaukee. He was united in marriage with Janis Winter Ritanour on September 21, 1985 in Saukville. Don enjoyed gardening and working in his yard, woodworking and was very involved with genealogy research. He is survived by his wife, Janis of Saukville, 2 stepdaughters: Samantha (Dan Pokrop) Ritenour of Port Washington and Nicole Ritenour of Saukville, his mother, Isabelle Sherron of Springfield, MO, 2 brothers: Ronald (Pam) Sherron of Greenfield, MO and Jerry (Linda) Sherron of Golden, MO. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. A Gathering of Friendship will be held Thursday, May 20 from 5-7 PM. Burial will be in Howell cemetery, Barton County, MO. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the St. Mary's Hospice Program.

Betty May

Mrs. Elizabeth Ann May, “Betty” age 74 years, of Port Washington, passed away in the afternoon of Saturday, April 10, 2004 at her residence, after a 4 year battle with lung cancer. She was born October 5, 1929 in Port Washington, daughter of the late Daniel and Betsy Chapman Dayton. Betty attended Hill School and Port Washington High School. She married Richard “Dick” May at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Port Washington on November 27, 1948. Betty was a homemaker, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Betty was the smiling face that greeted customers in the customer service center as head cashier at the Sentry Food Store in Port Washington until her retirement in 1978. She is a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the Van Ells-Schanen American Legion Post Auxiliary. She loved gardening, fishing, golfing, playing cards, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and especially traveling, taking her dream vacation to Hawaii in 1970, and summers at Crooked Lake. Betty is survived by her husband of 55 years Dick of Port Washington, son Mark (Lyn) May of Grafton, 4 grandchildren Carrie Jo (Koby) Scheel of Grafton, Todd Liebenstein of Eagle River, Craig (Lisa) Liebenstein of Grafton, and Brianne May of Melbourne, FL. She is further survived by 5 great-grandsons Brennan, Kenton and Cameron Scheel and Nicholas and Jacob Liebenstein., and 2 brothers Robert (Darlene) Dayton of Shawano and Daniel Jr. of Bonduel, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday evening, 7 PM at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 1800 N. Wisconsin St. Port Washington, with Father Michael P. Dineen officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday from 5-7 PM. In lieu flowers, memorials suggested to the Ozaukee Humane Society or charity of choice. The May family wishes to thank the Oncology Dept. at St. Mary’s Ozaukee Hospital and VITAS Hospice for all their loving care and support. Eernisse Funeral Home, Port Washington is assisting the family.
