Elva (Canas) Puentes, 46, of Beloit, WI, died Wednesday, January 19, 2005 in her home surrounded by her family after an extended battle with cancer.

She was born July 1, 1958 in Sterling, IL, the daughter of Leandro and Beatrice Martinez Canas. Elva married Jose Puentes on January 10, 1995. Elva was employed by the Neighborhood Housing Services in Beloit, WI, and formerly employed by the Community Unit School District #5 in Sterling, IL. She was active in the schools, acting as a liaison for the Hispanic community. Elva was a loving daughter, sister, mother, and grandmother who will be missed by all.

Survivors include her husband, Jose Puentes of Beloit, WI; her father, Leandro Canas of Los Indios, TX; four sisters, Gloria (Jose) Sanchez of Cicero, IL, Celia (Simon Saucedo) Villagomez of Beloit, WI, Delia Canas of Sterling, IL and Teresa (Sergio) Vera of Beloit, WI; two sons, Rolando (Christina) Ducoing of Sterling, IL and Pedro Quintana of Beloit, WI; one daughter, Bella Ducoing of Rockford, IL; one grandchild; 20 nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her mother, Beatrice Canas and brother, Leandro Canas Jr.

A time of remembrance will be held at 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 21, 2005 in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until the time of services on Friday in the funeral home.

Paul Francis “Bud” Pratt, 81, of Conway, Arkansas died Sunday, January 2, 2005 in Cindy Clark Home for the Elderly in Conway, AR.

He was born June 29, 1923 in South Beloit, IL, the son of Frederick and Mary Hayes Pratt. Paul graduated from South Beloit High School in 1942. He served in the United States Navy Seabees during WWII. Paul graduated from Drake University with a Bachelors Degree and from the Western Illinois University with a Masters Degree. He taught elementary school and was an administrator. He was Principal of Rock Ridge Elementary School in Rock Island, IL until he retired in 1982. Paul was a member of St. Josephs Catholic Church in Conway, Arkansas.

Survivors include his daughter, Victoria Roberts of Beloit, WI; brother, William “Bill” (Evalyn) Pratt of Janesville, WI; sisters, Catherine Johnson of Rockton, IL and Julia (Ralph) Allen of Beloit, WI; sister-in-law, Edith Pratt of Scottsdale, AZ; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Clara and Joe Grummer and Jim Atchley of Conway, AR.

He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Fred of Scottsdale, Arizona, Jim of Carol Stream, IL; sister-in-law, Betty (Finley) Pratt and brother-in-law, Arthur O. Johnson.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 7, 2004 in Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church with Father Gary Krahenbuhl officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service in the church. Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI 53511 assisted the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to a charity of your choice or Hospice Care.

Rose M. Porter, 49, of Beloit, WI died Saturday, January 1, 2005 at Beloit Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born February 8, 1955 in Beloit, WI, the daughter of John and Ethelyn (Carroll) Sumpter. Rose was a 1973 graduate of Beloit Memorial High School. She married Trevor Porter on June 20, 1981 in Rockton, IL.

Rose worked at The Club as a bartender. She enjoyed gardening, scrap booking and aquariums. Rose enjoyed having a good time and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband and best friend, Trevor; children, T.J. Porter ( Brooke Ruston) of Beloit, WI, Chad (Tara) Schultz of Groton, Connecticut, and Belinda (Randy) Noack of Beloit, WI; grandchildren, Alexis and Kylie Schultz, Breanna, Brandan and Trace Noack; parents, John (Diane) Sumpter of Janesville, Ethel (Ron ) Kuxmann of Beloit, WI; mother-in-law, Barb Porter; sisters, Lynda (Dana) Wright of Beloit, WI, Leslie Eastlick of Beloit, WI; brother, Johnny Sumpter of Beloit, WI; step-brothers and sisters, Jeff (Lisa) Armstrong of Janesville, WI, Brett (Ann) Hunt of Fond du Lac, WI, Lori Armstrong of Colorado and Teri (Scott) Filzen of Janesville, WI; brother-in-law, KC (Wendy) Porter of Beloit, WI; sister-in-law, Marti Brockman of Beloit, WI; nieces and nephews, Michael, Tracy, Val, Trent and Ally of Beloit, WI. She also leaves behind several aunts, uncles, cousins and many special friends.

She was predeceased by her grandparents; Lester and Helen Carroll, Leslie and Edith Sumpter, uncle, Russ Borre, and father-in-law, Trevor Porter.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, January 6, 2004 at the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI with Reverend Gene VanGalder officiating. Burial will be at East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 5th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Memorials may be given in her name to the American Cancer Society.

Ruth Palmer, 78, of South Beloit, IL, died Wednesday, December 22, 2004 in Fair Oaks Health Care Center, South Beloit, IL.

She was born May 18, 1926 in Avon Township, WI, the daughter of John and Ruby Mae DeVoe Ommodt. Ruth was a 1945 graduate of Beloit High School. She married Arthur J. Palmer on September 14, 1947 in Luther Valley Church. He predeceased her on April 13, 1981.

Ruth was employed by Fairbanks Morse, owned and operated R.P. Ceramics for 35 years and was the co-owner of Palmers Beloit Nursery for 40 years. Ruth was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and former past Worthy Matron. Ruth was a loving mother and grandmother. She loved ceramics, cross stitching, crossword puzzles and her summer home in Manitowish Waters, WI.

Survivors include her son, David (Laura) Palmer; daughter-in-law, Cindy Palmer; grandchildren, Jacquie (Todd) Palmer VanSchelven, Jennifer (Lawrence) Rowlett, Matthew Palmer, Christopher Palmer, Breanna Palmer and Abigayle Palmer; great grandchildren, Ryan James VanShelven, Colton Alan Rowlett, Kaden Alan VanSchelven and Taylor Lyn Rowlett; special niece, Carol (Chuck) Rose; special nephew, Dennis (Karen) Ommodt; other nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, two sons, Mark and Alan, three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2004 in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with the Reverend Paul E. Gregersen officiating. Burial will be in Rockton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be given in her name to the South Beloit Fire Department.

Yvonne J. Paris, 72, of Beloit, WI, went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 17, 2004 in Beloit Memorial Hospital.

She was born on September 16, 1932 in Beloit, WI, the daughter of Lavern and Bertha Sneath Rylatt. Yvonne married James Paris on December 8, 1951 in Kirksville, MO. He predeceased her on December 25, 1977. Yvonne was employed by Macktown Golf course for 14 years. She was a loving and caring mother that enjoyed being with her family and friends.

Survivors include her daughter, Vella (Roy) Cortinez of Machesney Park, IL; grandchildren, Cecilia Cortinez, Celinda Cortinez, James Cortinez and Serina Cortinez; sister, Nadine (Orville) Polzin of Beloit, WI; uncle, Victor (Joyce) Sneath of Colorado; aunt, Beatrice Lee of Beloit, WI; step-brother, Ralph (Jackie) Byers; several nieces, nephews and cousins; special friend for 22 years, Robert Soliz.

She was predeceased by her parents, an uncle, Bud; a step-brother, Robert Byers and a step-sister, Catherine Waldsmith.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 21, 2004 in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with Fr. Gary Krahenbuhl officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services Tuesday in the funeral home.

Dr. William Henry Pollard Jr., 88, of Beloit, WI, died Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at Beloit Memorial Hospital. He was born January 9, 1916 in Detroit, MI. He will always be remembered for his compassionate care of patients and his warm sense of humor. He was truly an amazing man!

His parents were William Henry and Eleanor M. Matchett Pollard Sr. He attended elementary and the first two years of high school in Indiana polis, Indiana . Following a tragic accident, he finished high school in Beloit at Beloit Memorial High School in 1935. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree, Medical Science Degree at the University of Wisconsin in 1939 and his Doctor’s Degree in Medicine at the University of Wisconsin in 1942. He interned in Duluth, Minnesota and was a surgical resident at Wisconsin General Hospital, Madison, WI.

He returned to Beloit in the late 1940’s and set up his private practice which spanned 36 years from 1949 until 1985. He was licensed to practice medicine and surgery in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois.

Doctor Pollard became a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery in 1939 followed by American College of Surgeons in 1941 and Rock County Medical Society, St. Louis County of Minnesota Medical Society and Wisconsin Medical and Surgical Society. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Beloit Police and Fire Commission and was inducted into the Beloit Memorial Hall of Fame on May 1, 2001. Beloit Memorial Hospital had a grand opening and dedication of the William H. Pollard Jr. Ambulatory Surgery Center on October 8, 1992. A tribute to a then retired physician.

On December 25, 1941, he married Ann Chamberlain Earle in St. Petersburg, Florida. They were married 54 years until her death on May 1, 1996. They had three children. The family enjoyed vacationing, fishing and spending time with friends.

He is survived by his son, William Earle (Judy) Pollard; his two daughters, Carol (Kenneth) Boyles and Eleanor (James) Swinehart; six grandchildren, James William (Christine) Pollard, Susan (Charles) Sostak, Eric (Mickie) Boyles, Heather (Patrick) Parris, Thomas (Fatma) Swinehart and Carla Swinehart; six great grandchildren, Mackenna, Abbigail, and Gavin Parris, Sawyer, Ian and Ella Boyles; his brother, Robert (Catherine) Pollard; other nieces, nephews as well as many dear friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, William Henry and Eleanor Pollard.

A special thank you to his caregivers, Dr. Gold, the staff at Riverside Terrace, Hospice Nurses and Beloit Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 11, 2004 in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with the Reverend Gene VanGalder officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service, in the funeral home.

Memorials may be given in his name to Beloit Memorial Hospital Foundation.

Thomas J. Perkins, 66, of Beloit, WI, died Monday, November 29, 2004 in Little Rock, Arkansas as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born on October 4, 1938 in Beloit, WI, the son of Edward J. and Audrey Dohm Perkins. After his mother’s death in 1943, Thomas was raised by his father and step mother, Phyllis Crull Perkins. Thomas was a 1956 graduate of Orfordville High School. He was a former member of the National Guard. Thomas married Caren L. Walters on January 30, 1960 in St. Jude Catholic Church, Beloit, WI.

Thomas was a trucker all of his life and was self employed for a period of time and later worked for Conway Central Express. He appeared to be gruff but was a kind, friendly, generous man that would do anything for anyone at any time. His wife and family were the most important in his life. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Janesville, WI.

Survivors include his wife, Caren; children, Thomas J. (Carol) Perkins II of Janesville, WI, Terry E. (Karin) Perkins of Beloit, WI, Susan A. (Chuck) Kemp of Beloit, WI, Timothy J. (Sarah) Perkins of Fort Atkinson, WI and Jenny L. (Damon Loyd) Jass of Beloit, WI; grandchildren, Alicia, Tom and Kimberly Perkins, Ryan, Katelyn, Alex, Marc, Rachel and Brett Perkins, Nick Perkins, Troy Kemp, Andrea Perkins, Jamey and Nolan Jass; two sisters, Rosemary (Ramon) Blabaum of Dodgeville, WI and Ruth (David) Nordeng of Footville, WI; three brothers, John Michael (Cora) Perkins of Footville, WI, William (Sheila) Perkins of Brodhead, WI and Steven (Pamela) Perkins of Orfordville, WI; mother-in-law, Ardella Walters of Janesville, WI; special brother-in-law, Edward N. (Alicia) Walters of Afton, WI; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, step mother and father-in-law, Edward Walters.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 6, 2004 in the St. Jude Catholic Church, with Fr. Stephen J. Umhoefer from St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Janesville, WI officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road Beloit, WI, with a Scripture service at 5:00 p.m.

Memorials may be given in his name to the Cardiac Unit of Beloit Memorial Hospital.

Marlene C. Palubinski, 79, of South Beloit, IL, died Wednesday, December 1, 2004 in Fair Oaks Health Care Center.

She was born February 10, 1925 in Beloit, WI, the daughter of LeRoy and Theresa Zeller Bichsel. Marlene was a 1943 graduate of South Beloit High School and attended St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Milwaukee. She married Albert J. Palubinski on August 10, 1946 in St. Peter Catholic Church, South Beloit, IL.

Marlene was a member of the Northern Illinois Library board, St. Peter Catholic Church were she was active in the choir, and Altar and Rosary Society. She was a former president of the South Beloit Library board. Marlene was a lifetime blood donor. She was involved in the community and was very active with the Girl Scouts and PTA. Marlene loved to read. She was the founder of the South Beloit Library Samplers Bus Tours which were one day adventures exploring fun and educational locations throughout the area.

Survivors include her husband, Albert; children, Susan Hartung of Dekalb, IL, Steven (Natasha) Palubinski of Louisville, CO and Marcia (Rick) Hoenes of Orwell, VT; grandchildren, Alli (Jim) Clark of Cortland, IL and Morgan Hartung of Dekalb, IL, Nicholas Palubinski of Tokyo, Japan, Paul Palubinski of Louisville, CO, Samuel, Sarah, and Seth Hoenes of Orwell, VT; great grandchildren, Timothy Hartung, Jeffrey Valleroy, James Jr. and Kristen Clark.

She was predeceased by her parents.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, December 6, 2004 in St. Peter Catholic Church with Fr. Jerome Koutnik officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name to the Rockford Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
