Raymond E. Martens Sr.
Raymond E. Martens Sr. of West Bend, 90, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at St. Joseph’s Community Hospital.
He was born to John and Bridgid (nee McGraw) Martens on Aug. 29, 1910 in Geneseo, Ill. He married Catherine Leonard on June 24, 1936, at Holy Angels Catholic Church of West Bend.

He was a quiet complex man with an extraordinary work ethic and innate humility. He was always focused on the well being of others and met his challenges with good humor and wonderful patience. He lived and left his life a true gentleman.

Although his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all who associated with him will sorely regret his passing, we all rejoice he has been reunited with our mother in Heaven.

He is survived by three children, William (Edna) Martens of Trenton, N.J., Patricia (Patrick) Deany of Millersville, Md. and Raymond Martens Jr. of West Bend; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife on March 22, 2000, and his parents.

The family would like to thank the D-3 staff at Cedar Lake Health Care Center for all their care, compassion and support for the last year and a half, with specific thanks to Dorothy Hohner, registered nurse on D-3, for the special efforts she gave in trying to make dad’s last days happy ones. A special thank you to Maureen Whalen, one of the residents who was extremely helpful in his day-to-day activities. If there are angels among us, the D-3 staff is the personification.

A memorial service will be held on a later date next month. Inurnment will take place at Washington County Memorial Park.

The Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend is assisting the family.

Marie "Mayme" Kraus
Marie "Mayme" Kraus, 88, of the Samaritan Health Center, West Bend, formerly of Fredonia, died peacefully in her sleep early Saturday morning, Sept. 2, 2000.
She was born in Milwaukee on March 30, 1912, the daughter of the late Peter and Rose Gebhard Schmitz. On June 15, 1932, she married Matt Kraus at St. Leo’s Church in Milwaukee. He preceded her in death on Sept. 5, 1964.

Mayme worked as a shoe assembler at Allen Edmonds Shoe Company in Lake Church for many years. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church in Fredonia, the Christian Mothers and the Apostolite of the Suffering. Mayme also loved crafts.

She is survived by three children, Shirley (Norman) Stern of West Bend, Ken (Mary) Kraus of Germantown and Joan (Ted) Peelen of Greenfield; four grandchildren, Glenn (fiance Sam), Stern, Sandi Stern, Cheryl (Bob) Leissring and Lisa (Mike) Mohr; seven great-grandchildren, Morgan and Alec Leissring, Mathew and Katelyn Mohr, and Stephanie, Jessica and Breanna; two sisters, Clara Mundschau of Jefferson and Catherine Gantner of Villa Park, Ill.; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held today at 7 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Fredonia, with Father Neil Zinthefer officiating. Burial will be in St. Rose Parish Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church today from 4-7 p.m.

The Eernisse Funeral Home, Port Washington, is assisting the family.

Eugene W. Rathke
Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Grafton, for Eugene W. Rathke, 79.
Interment was at the church cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Mueller Funeral Home, Grafton.

Mr. Rathke was born in Port Washington on July 20, 1921, son of Oscar and Dorothea (nee Schachel) Rathke.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Grafton, and was part owner of Cedarburg Milk Transit.

Survivors include brothers Gerald (Florence) of Manitowish Waters and Oscar (Ruth) of Jackson; sister-in-law June Rathke of Waubeka; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Waldemar.

Memorials to St. Paul Lutheran Church would be appreciated.

Marvin E. Schommer
Marvin E. Schommer, 74, of West Bend, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at St. Joseph's Community Hospital.

He was born on Jan. 1. 1926, in Hastings, Minn., to the late Nicholas and Alvina (nee Rubin) Schommer. At an early age, the family moved to South Milwaukee where he grew up.

During World War II, he served on a minesweeper in the U.S. Navy, both in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres.

After his discharge, Marv studied at machinists' school and became a tool and die maker, working at various tool and die shops prior to his retirement.

Marvin was united in marriage to Marilyn D. Perkins on Nov. 29, 1947, in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Kewaskum.

Survivors include his wife; 10 children, Nick (Janet) of Darien, Joanne (Fred) Harris of Flagstaff, Ariz., Gary (Debra) of Menomonee Falls, Dan (Amy) of Fredonia, Mark, Bob, Fred (Patty), Rich (Kristi), Mary (Gary) Wild and Brian (Lynn), all of West Bend; 14 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; three sisters, Lucille (Harold) Nischke of Kewaskum, Marcella Kleineider of Greeley, Colo. and Frances (Alex) Beck of Horicon; a brother, James (Delores) of Berlin; two brothers-in-law, Harold Perkins and Marvin (Shirley) Perkins, both of Kewaskum; two sisters-in-law, Viola Lawrenz of Cleveland, Wis. and Patricia Kirschling of Cable; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were two sisters, his twin Mary M. Schommer and Eileen Perkins, and two brothers, Louis and Clarence "Bud."

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 9:30 a.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home, West Bend, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church.

Father Gerald Brittain presided, and burial followed in Holy Angels Cemetery.

Virgil E. 'Virg' Stafford
Virgil E. "Virg" Stafford, 76, of Jackson, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at the Samaritan Health Center, West Bend.

He was born Aug. 19, 1924, in Anvoy, Ill., to the late Joseph and Florence (Sarver) Stafford.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

After his marriage to Verna L. Kienitz on Oct. 5, 1946, in Milwaukee, the couple lived in Milwaukee, and later in El Paso, Texas. In 1966 they moved to Sullivan, Wis., and in 1976 settled in Jackson.

Virg was a self-employed interstate semi driver for over 50 years, retiring in 1985.

Survivors include his wife; two children, Lanna (Paul) Eagan of Jackson and Todd of Milwaukee; five grandchildren, Michael Stafford, Jason Stafford, Charles (Sara) Wendorf, Carrie (Jerry) Stolarczyk and Chad Wendorf; four great-grandchildren, Andrew, Christian, Robin and Sydney; two sisters, Mary (Donald) Sazda of Milwaukee and Doris Swoverland of Las Vegas, Nev.; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

He was a member of VFW Post 7240 of Jackson, and Trinity Lutheran Church of Jackson.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend.

Rev. Kenneth Schmidt of Trinity Lutheran Church of Jackson will officiate, and interment will be in Washington County Memorial Park of West Bend.

Visitation at the funeral home will be Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Memorials are appreciated.

Rose V. Cmelak

Rose V. Cmelak (Sieg) of Germantown died at her daughter's home in Oak Creek on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, following a 5-year battle with cancer. She was 71.
A longtime Washington County resident, Cmelak spent many years at the family home on Bark Lake, where she was involved in a variety of activities. She was instrumental in organizing Bark Lake Volunteer Fire Department's EMT program, the Snow Barkers Snowmobile Club and the Country Western Club of Wisconsin. She also delivered Meals on Wheels for Washington County. In addition to golf, deer hunting and gambling, Cmelak enjoyed spending time with her family at her summer home in the Wautoma area. At the time of her death, Cmelak was employed at Germantown Cleaners and a resident of Becker Manor in Germantown.

She is survived by her children; Dolores "Lori" (John) Kannegiesser of Oak Creek, Lynn (Javier) Beltran of Germantown, Robert (Maripat) Blankenheim of the town of Summit, Jeffery Blankenheim of Germantown and Patrick (Tonya) Sieg of Hartford; grandchildren, Cynthia (Michael) Bruneau, Daniel (Colleen) Kannegiesser, Tammy Miller, Eric, Jessica and Saman-tha Blankenheim, Nicole and Jeremy Spurgin and Jacob Sieg. She is also survived by two brothers; Paul (Eleanor) Cmelak and Joseph (Karen) Cmelak; one sister, Dolores (the late Gerald) Rudy, five great grandchildren, her sister-in-law Dorothy Cmelak, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by one brother, John Cmelak. Services will be held through Valhalla Memorial Park in Milwaukee on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Stillwaters Center, Inc. (434 Madison St., Waukesha, Wis. 53188) are appreciated.

Paul P. Weibel
Paul P. Weibel of Ashippun passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000 at Beverly Terrace Nursing Home, Watertown. He was 83 years old.
He was born in Cashton on April 22, 1917 to Aloys and Florence (nee Schroeder) Weibel. He married Lillian Rolland on Oct. 21, 1939.

Paul was a farmer and construction worker and was also retired from the Oconomowoc School System. He was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Mapleton.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian; ten children, Roger (Roseanne) Weibel of Fort Worth, Tex., Darlene (Randy) Klemm of Oconomowoc, Ronald (Cyndi) Weibel of Oconomowoc, Donna (Robert) Ireland of Oconomowoc, Diane (Robert) Kube of Watertown, Robert (Cindy) Weibel of Rhinelander, Richard (Denise) Weibel of Rhinelander, Doreen Weibel of Hartford, Dorothy (Brian) Solveson of Oconomowoc, and Randy (Joylyn) Weibel of Rockton, Ill.; 25 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Owen (Marion) Weibel of Torrance, Cal., Michael (Carol) Weibel of Denver, Colo., and William (Jeanie) Weibel of Wyoming, Mich.; one sister, Joann (Paul) Conrad of Sparta; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Coleth; and brothers, Donald, Phillip, Leonard and Carlton.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 11 at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, W359 N8512 Brown St., Mapleton with Rev. David Verhasselt officiating. Visitation will take place on Sunday at the Pagenkopf Funeral Home, Oconomowoc, from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Mapleton.

Memorials to Ashippun Little League or St. Catherine's Church appreciated.

Jean A. Stenz
Jean A. Stenz (nee Hamill) of Mayville passed away on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000 at St. Agnes Hospital, Fond du Lac. She was 68 years old.
She was born in Kansas City, Missouri on Aug. 12, 1932 to James and Minnie (nee Grahek) Hamill. She married Walter "Wally" Stenz on Aug. 2, 1952 in South Milwaukee.

Jean graduated from West Milwaukee High School in 1951. After her marriage to Wally, they moved to Hubertus and lived there for 20 years. They resided in Hartford for 11 years and then moved to Mayville. Jean was employed as a rural mail carrier for 26 years, retiring in 1996. She enjoyed bird watching and hunting with her family along with canoeing and fishing. She was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, LeRoy, and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association.

She is survived by her husband, Walter of Mayville; four sons, Leon (Amy) of Crandon, Walter III of Jacksonville, Fla., David (Denise) of Crandon, and Thomas (Shelli) of Fort Worth, Tex.; three daughters, Jill (Hugh) Holmes of Hartford, Judy (John) Osmus of Mayville, and Mary (Donny) Janzer of Iron Ridge; 19 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Robert (Peggy) Hamill of Brookfield and James (Diane) Hamill of Oshkosh; one sister., MaryKay (Peter) Cebula of Montello; a mother-in-law, Evelyn Stenz of Hartford; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Michael.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in LeRoy with Rev. Charles Wester officiating. The family greeted relatives and friends on Wednesday at the church from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Private family burial will take place on Thursday, Sept. 7 at St. Hubert Cemetery, Hubertus.

The Cottrill Funeral Home of Mayville is serving the family.
