Howard J. "Howie" "H.J." Groth
Howard J. "Howie" "H.J." Groth, 66, of West Bend, met his savior on his birthday, Saturday, March 10, 2001, at the Franciscan Skemp Hospital, Sparta.

He was born March 10, 1935, in West Bend, to the late Herbert and Esther (Pagel) Groth, and was raised in Kirchhayn.

He attended David Star Elementary School and Cedarburg High School.

After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, he married Joan K. Meyer on Jan. 9, 1960, at Jerusalem Ev. Lutheran Church, Milwaukee.

The couple lived in Cedarburg where he started his business in masonary and cement contracting in 1959.

The couple moved to the town of Polk in 1968, and he was the owner and operator of Groth Construction of Jackson for over 41 years.

Survivors include his wife; three children, Linda (John) Marx of the town of Polk, Michael H. (Vickie) Groth of West Bend and Ronald (Victoria) Groth of the town of West Bend; six grandchildren, Joshua, Cassandra, Jordan, Elizabeth, Sarah and Catherine; three brothers, Roger (Patricia) Groth of San Pedro, Calif., Donald (Audrey) Groth of Pewaukee, Marvin (Delores) Groth of Delafield; a sister, Mary (Henry) Rofritz of Cedarburg; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death was a sister.

He was very active in the Jackson Area Businessmen's Association where he was named the Man of the Year, and was very active with the yearly scholarship golf outing.

Howie was an avid snowmobiler, hunter and fisherman. He loved golf, trap shooting and going to Kerrigan Lish at Pardee Lake.

He was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, West Bend, and enjoyed having a good time with many, many friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 15, at 7 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Pastor James Ziesemer will officiate, and interment will be in Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend, at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Visitation at the church only will be Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.

Memorials are appreciated to Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School or Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

The Phillip Funeral Home, West Bend, is assisting the family.

Marcella Elsie Krahn
Marcella Elsie Krahn, nee Maas, 84, of West Bend, formerly of the Adams Friendship area, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 9, 2001, at St. Joseph's Community Hospital.

She was born Nov. 15, 1916, in West Bend, to the late William and Elsie (Benicke) Maas.

After her marriage to Edwin W. Gessner on May 1, 1931, the couple lived in the West Bend area. He passed away in June, 1994.

On Feb. 18, 1956, she married Wilbert R. Krahn in West Bend. They moved to the Adams Friendship area where she drove bus for over 30 years.

She was an avid crafter and teacher of craft classes, loved playing the concertina, and enjoyed freelance painting.

Marcella was a member of the Kettle Moraine Bible Church, president of Adams County Homemakers Club, served on the Arkdale Community Church Council, and published a cookbook.

She was the beloved wife of Wilbert Krahn; cherished mother of Wayne Gessner of Janesville, Joanne (Paul) Schneiss of West Bend, Glen (Miranda) Gessner of Beechwood and Dianne (William) Richter of Big Cedar Lake; the loving grandmother of 14 and great-grandmother of 28; dear sister of Wilma Leffingwell of Port Edwards and Laura (Carl) Seidensticker of Cedarburg.

She is further survived by four sisters-in-law, Mavis (Harvey) Schmidt, Ruby Bever, Marilyn (Richard) Backhaus, all of West Bend, and Virginia Simpson of Athens; two stepsons, Gilbert (Lee) Krahn and Herbert (Beverly) Krahn, both of Shawano; a former daughter-in-law, Sandy Gessner of West Bend; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were a son and daughter-in-law, David and Susan Gessner; two grandsons; a granddaughter; a sister-in-law, Evangeline Steinmetz; and her mother-in-law, Walinda Krahn.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 13, at 7 p.m. at the Phillip Funeral Home, West Bend.

Pastor Michael Keshan will officiate, and interment will be in Washington County Memorial Park at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Visitation at the funeral home will be Tuesday, from 4 p.m. until the time of services.

Memorials are appreciated to St. Joseph's Hospice or the Kettle Moraine Bible Church.

The Phillip Funeral Home, West Bend, is assisting the family.

Edward Konwent
Edward Konwent, 69, of Sussex, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Community Memorial Hospital.

He was born April 13, 1932, in Milwaukee, to the late Thadeus and Lottie (Kopczynski) Konwent, and attended Kewaskum High School.

He married Elaine V. Wnuk on Nov. 15, 1952, in Greenfield. She passed away in 1977. He then married Peggy Wegner on Jan. 20, 1979, in Milwaukee.

He had been a machinist at Howe Industries.

He was the owner of Konwent and Sons Machining and Woodworking and the second owners of Honey Lane Kennels in Milwaukee.

He was vice president of Kettle Moraine Kennel Club and a board member, show rounds chairman and founding member of the Midwest Borzoi Kennel Club, and a member of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Eric (Debbie) of Sullivan, and Thaddeus "Ted" of Sussex; daughters, Joy Kuhnke of West Bend, and Julie (Rick) Hahn of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Becky (Steve) May of West Bend and Landon of Tennessee; two great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Seth; brothers and sisters, George "Nick" (Rita) of Washington, Diane (Clay) Denny of Florida and Anita Riley of Plymouth; a sister-in-law, Susie (Gary) Stimace of Montom, Texas; a heartfelt friend, Bob Howe of Howe Industries.

He is also survived by Rygiewiczs, Buskes, Konwents, nieces nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Preceding him in death were a granddaughter, Shelly Kuhnke in 1997, and a sister, Patsy (Larry) Riley of Random Lake.

He will be sadly missed by all the people he touched throughout his lifetime.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 16, at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Bruce Marggraf will officiate, and burial will be in Wisconsin Memorial Park.

Visitation at the Heritage Funeral Home, 6615 W. Oklahoma, Milwaukee, will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday at the church from 9:30 until the time of services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family are appreciated.

Arthur J. Wiskirchen
Arthur J. Wiskirchen, 88, of West Bend, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at the Samaritan Health Center.

He was born Oct. 18, 1912, in West Bend, to the late Arthur and Anna (nee Troedel) Wiskirchen, and married Gertrude Bunke on May 5, 1934, at Holy Angels Church.

During his younger years, Art was a very active bowler and baseball player.

Together with his son, Charles, Art owned and operated the Sealtest Dairy distributorship in West Bend from 1947 until 1972, after which he was a bus driver for Johnson Bus Co. for 16 years.

Art was a sacristan, commentator and Eucharistic minister at Holy Angels Church for many years.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Charles (Cynthia) of West Bend; six grandchildren, Sandra (Lee) Stehling, Randal (Penni), Mark (Mercedes) and Diane (Dave) Bartley, all of West Bend, Steven (Amy) and Keith (Jennifer), both of Kewaskum; 12 great-grandchildren other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were three brothers, Fritz, Lee and Edward.

Private family services will be held at the Schmidt Funeral Home with Father Gerald Brittain officiating.

Burial will be in Holy Angels Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Joseph's Community Hospital Capital Development Fund or to Holy Angels Church would be appreciated.

Victor J. Roden
Victor J. Roden, 83, of Saukville, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital-Ozaukee, Mequon, due to a recent stroke.

He was born on the family homestead in Saukville on May 21, 1917, to the late John and Bernadine (Schuh) Roden.

As a young man he was a deputy and bailiff for Ozaukee County Sheriff's Department. He was very active in county politics and ran unsuccessfully for sheriff a few times over the years.

On May 6, 1950, Victor married Gladys Baumann of Port Washington at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Port Washington.

They returned to his family's homestead where they raised their 10 children, dairy cows and crops.

Vic enjoyed farming and was an active cattle buyer.

He was very active with Immaculate Conception Church in Saukville, holding many positions including finance committee member and was chairman of the Catholic Stewardship Appeal for 51 years.

Vic was also a former town of Saukville supervisor for many years.

He will be remembered as a people person who could talk with anyone.

Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Ann (Tracey) Terrazas of LaValle, Mary (Michael) Schmitt, Betty (Gary) VandeBoom, Kay (Randy) Schmit, all of Port Washington and Vicky (Steve Joanis) of Golden, Colo.; five sons, John of Saukville, Robert (Cynthia) of Newburg, Tom (Linda) of Port Washington, Paul (Michelle) of Cedarburg and Joseph (Jodie) of Grafton; grandchildren, Katie and Patrick Schmitt, Joel, Laura and Jill VandeBoom Mitchell, Maggie and Marcus Schmit, Richard, Patti, Amy, Becky, Jacki, Sarah, Aaron, Elizabeth, Jennifer, Julia, Nicole, Emily and Eric Roden; a sister, Marie Falkner of Newburg; other relatives and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, at Immaculate Conception Church, Saukville.

Rev. Karl Acker will be the celebrant, and interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation at the church (Highway 33 bridge closed 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) will be Thursday from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Memorials to the church are appreciated.

The Poole Funeral Home, Port Washington, is serving the family.
