Evelyn Berend
Longtime Waubeka resident, Evelyn Berend, nee Ollinger, 86, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Marlene, in Evanston, Ill., where she had been living.
Evelyn, better known to her friends and customers as "Evie," ran a saloon in Waubeka together with her husband, Tony, until he passed away on Feb. 4, 1974. Evie then ran it until 1994 when she became ill.
She was born in rural West Bend on Dec. 9, 1914, to the late Frank and Pauline (nee Fick) Ollinger, and graduated from West Bend High School.
On Nov. 11, 1933, Evelyn married Anthony "Tony" Berend in Barton at St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Survivors include three children, Darlene (Dan) Monahan of Fredonia, Howard (Flora) of Deming, N.M. and Marlene (Bobby) Hunter of Evanston; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were two sons, William and Robert, and brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home, West Bend. Burial will be in Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend.
Visitation at the funeral home will be Thursday from 4 p.m. until the time of the services.
Beatrice V. Vaclavik
Beatrice V. Vaclavik, nee Deau, 86, of El Paso, Texas, formerly of West Bend, died on Saturday, July 21, 2001, at the Regent Care Center in El Paso.
She was born on Nov. 1, 1914, in the Manitowoc area to the late Louis and Ethel (nee Gardner) Deau.
Following her marriage to Jerome A. Vaclavik on Feb. 18, 1939 in Manitowoc, the couple moved to West Bend.
She was employed as a nursing aide at the former Washington County Home and Hospital.
Following her husband's death on Jan. 4,1969, she moved to El Paso where she became a private duty nurse.
Survivors include three children, Donald (Delores) of Keensburg, Ill., Mary (Gerald) Sanders of El Paso and Sandra (Gerald) Troedel of West Bend; six grandchildren, Cossette, Collette, Theresa, Cheryl, Debra and Victor; great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Doris (Roy) Hubatch of Fox Lake; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were two grandsons, Robert and Gregory Troedel, and a brother, Harold (Alice) Deau.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 28, at 2 p.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home, West Bend.
Fr. Jeffrey Haines of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church will officiate, and burial will follow in Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend.
Visitation at the funeral home will be Saturday from noon until the time of services.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials.
Laura Lee Wichman
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, July 25, at 7 p.m. at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Grafton for Laura Lee Wichman. Visitation was held at the church from 4 -7 p.m. Rev. Franz Rigert officiated the funeral service.
Wichman, 64, died at St. Mary’s Ozaukee Hospital on July 21, 2001, after a struggle with cancer.
She was born on Oct. 28, 1936 to the late George Guest and the late Helen Tollefson in Evanston, Ill. She later married the late Rev. John A. Wichman in Evanston, Ill., on June 14, 1958. They moved to Grafton, where they raised their family.
She was a piano teacher who touched the lives of many who took lessons from her. She was also a church organist for many of the United Church of Christ churches in the Fox Lake, Campbellsport and Kewaskum areas. She was a member of the Sigma Alpha Iota music sorority as well as the Grafton New-Comers Club. She also volunteered her time and talents at the Washington Heights Senior Center.
She is survived by her children: Julie Ann (Joel Herringa) of Milwaukee, John Eric of Waubeka and William James (Melinda) Wichman of Mequon; grandchildren Eric of Waubeka, Sarah of Waubeka, Skyler of Mequon, Jonathan of Waubeka, Haley Rain of Mequon, and Landon of Mequon; brother-in-law James (Roxie) Wichman of Madison; niece Michelle Wichman; and nephew James Wichman.
She is further survived by other relatives and many friends.
Memorials can be made out to Pilgrim United Church of Christ.
Tim Hoffman
Funeral services will be held tonight at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grafton for Tim Hoffman, of Loveland, Colo., formerly of Grafton, who died on July 21, 2001, at the age of 44. Family will receive friends at the church from 4 p.m. until the time of the service.
Mueller Funeral Home, Grafton is assisting the family with arrangements.
A memorial service in Loveland, Colo. is pending.
Hoffman was born Jan. 30, 1957 in Port Washington. He married Terry (nee Donahue) on Nov. 22, 1985 in Colorado.
Survivors include: his wife of Loveland, Colo.; sons Bob and Tom of Loveland, Colo.; parents Robert and Kathryne Hoffman of Grafton; brother Dan (Susie) Hoffman of Grafton.
He is further survived by nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Bob.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family are appreciated.
Stanley Lee Kempfer
Stanley Lee Kempfer, 43, went home with the Lord on Wednesday, July 25, 2001.
He is survived by Precious and Cleo, his two dogs. He is the dear son of Emil (Phyllis) Kempfer; loving brother of Kenneth (Jodi), Nickol Leanna, Dennis (Pamela), Linda (Thor) Sveinsvoll, Kathleen (Stan) Morgan, David and Sharon (David) Flores.
He is further survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death was a brother, Steven.
A special thanks to Jonathan Treisman and the nursing staff on the seventh floor at St. Luke's Hospital, and Rana, who brought Stanley special treats.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to Souls Harbor Baptist Church New Building Fund.
Visitation will be Friday, July 27, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Larsen Bros. New Berlin Chapel, 15250 W. National Ave., with funeral services at 6:30 p.m.
Private family burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.

Merlin F. McKee
Merlin F. McKee, 85, of the town of Farmington, passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2001, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born May 4, 1916, in the town of Farmington, to the late John and Veronica (nee Walter) McKee, and on Oct. 7, 1944 married Julia Federmeyer at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Port Washington.
The couple made their home in the town of Farmington where they farmed their entire life
Mr. McKee was employed by The West Bend Co. in West Bend for 22 1/2 years, was a devoted member of St. John of God Catholic Church in the town of Farmington and St. Michael's Catholic Church in St. Michaels, and was an honorary member of the Fillmore Fire Department.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by his wife, family and friends.
Survivors include his wife; three children, Carol McKee (friend David Mapes) of West Bend, Kenneth (Shirley) McKee and Richard (Sandy) McKee, both of the town of Farmington; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Jill, Timothy, Michael, Melissa and Jackie McKee; other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death was a brother, Reuben.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, St. Michaels.
Father Robert Artmann will officiate, and burial will be at 10 a.m. on Monday in St. John of God Catholic Church Cemetery, town of Farmington.
Friends may call at the church on Sunday from 3:30 p.m. until the time of services.
The Miller Funeral Home, Kewaskum, is serving the family.
Mary Jane Ottmer
Mary Jane Ottmer passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2001, in Tampa, Fla., where she and her husband, Louis S., have resided for the past 18 years. Prior to that she lived in West Bend and at Big Cedar Lake.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mary Jude Swartz of Tampa; two sons, Louis Jr. of Guatemala and Peter of Potomac, Md.; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother, Dr. Robert Kauth of West Bend; and her twin sister, Helen Pfeffer of Chilton.
Preceding her in death were four brothers, Thomas, Charles, Luke and Philip Kauth, and a sister, "Dolly" Killeen.
A funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, July 17, at Incarnation Church in Tampa.
