Melvin J. Gonwa

Melvin J. Gonwa, 79, of West Bend, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at Harbor Haven Nursing Home in Fond du Lac.
He was born April 27, 1922, in Dacada to the late Nicholas and Adelia (nee Wetor) Gonwa, and married Lucille C. Schmitt on Dec. 28, 1946, in Milwaukee.

Melvin was a lifelong carpenter working from 1949 until retiring in 1987 from the W.B. Corp.

He was an avid bowler and fisherman.

Melvin was a 50-year member of the American Legion Post 0145 in Random Lake and was also a member of the Milwaukee Carpenters Union Local 264.

Survivors include his wife; five children, James (Gail) of West Des Moines, Iowa, Gary (Sharon) of Eagle, Karen (Scott) Culbreth of Millerton, N.Y., William (Lynn) and Steven (Mary), both of West Bend; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is further survived by brothers and sisters, Harriet Prom of Saukville, Delores (Joe) Kultgen of Belgium, Myrtle Kleckner of Fredonia, Norbert (Lorraine) Gonwa of West Bend, Sylvan (Betty) Gonwa of Arizona and Roman (Virginia) Gonwa of Belgium; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death was a sister.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home, West Bend, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 7:30 p.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Church.

Father Jeffrey Haines will preside, and burial will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend.

Visitation at the funeral home will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Lawrence M. "Larry" Horning

Lawrence M. "Larry" Horning, 72, of Adell, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2001, at the Beechwood Retirement Home, where he had been a patient for the past few months.
Larry was born on May 16, 1929, in the town of Scott, to the late Jacob and Olga (Trost) Horning, attended school in Plymouth and graduated from Plymouth High School in 1947.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1953.

Larry was united in marriage to Norma Jaeger on May 28, 1955, in Maribel. She passed away on Feb. 16, 1995.

He was employed by Beechwood Cheese Factory, The West Bend Co., and when he returned from his service in the U.S. Army began his own milk hauling business, Horning Milk Transfer.

Larry was also a bartender at the Everglades-Pony Express Supper Club in New Prospect for 35 years.

He was a lifelong member of St. John United Church of Christ in Beechwood.

Survivors include five children, Nola (William) Norton of Plymouth, Nancy Horning of Kewaskum, Glenn (Mary) Horning of Adell, Russ (Cindy) Horning and James (Kim) Horning, both of Beechwood; seven grandchildren, Nathen, Nolan, Nicholas, Owen, Susan, Blake, Dylan and Justin; a sister, Delores Peters of Plymouth; three brothers-in-law, Robert (Shirley) Jaeger of Illinois, Herman (Lois) Jaeger of Two Rivers and Paul (Sandy) Jaeger of Florida; a very special friend, Don Laatsch of Boltonville; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death was an infant daughter, Noel.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. at St. John United Church of Christ in Beechwood.

Rev. William Wiederanders will officiate, and burial will follow on Friday in the Beechwood Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 4 p.m. until the time of the services.

The Wittkopp Funeral Home, Plymouth, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Gilbert V. "Gib" Mayer

Gilbert V. "Gib" Mayer, 85, of Newburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at St. Joseph's Community Hospital, West Bend.
He was born Sept. 21, 1915, in Newburg, to the late Martin and Kathryn (Proschinger) Mayer, and married Bernice G. Miller on June 7, 1941, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Gilbert was the fire chief of Newburg for a term and was an honorary member of the Newburg Fire Department.

He worked for over 47 years at Lochen Ford, and enjoyed restoring vehicles and tractors and also enjoyed polka dancing and playing cards.

He will be deeply missed by his devoted wife of 60 years, Bernice; eight children, Jerry (Annie) and Sharon (Conrad) Fischer, both of West Bend, Kathy (Richard) Pierce of Montgomery, Ala., Judy Austin of Jackson, Danny (Carol), Tom (Connie), Gilbert Jr. and Mary (Bill) Chesak, all of Newburg; 18 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by a brother-in-law, Willard Kirst of West Bend; a sister-in-law, Marian Jamrosy of Newburg; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were a grandson, Mark, and a sister, Mildred (Rudy) Rahlf.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Newburg.

Father Robert Sampon will be the presider, and burial will be Friday at 10 a.m. in Holy Trinity Cemetery.

Visitation at the church only will be Thursday from 4 to 7:15 p.m.

The Schmidt Funeral Home of West Bend is serving the family.

The "Mayer" of Newburg will be sadly missed on his routine drives through the village.

Dr. Edward L. Eckelman

Dr. Edward L. Eckelman, D.D.S., 70, of West Bend, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at St. Joseph's Community Hospital.
He was born Feb. 5, 1931, in Milwaukee, to Lee and Irma (nee Bayerlein) Eckelman, and married Catherine P. Pearson on Feb. 24, 1989, in Waukesha.

Survivors include his wife; his mother, Irma of Brookfield; three stepchildren, Elizabeth (Charlie) Ewald-Herrick of Merton, Emily Ewald of West Bend and John Ewald Jr. (fiancee Kerry Forbush) of Mukwonago; his mother-in-law, Catherine Sery of West Allis; two sisters-in-law, Suzann (William) Schroeder of Caledonia and Linda (Neil) Adamek of Oconomowoc; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death was his father, Lee.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 1:30 p.m. at Wisconsin Memorial Park, Brookfield, with Donald Berres officiating.

The Schmidt Funeral Home of West Bend is serving the family.

Irene M. Baehring

Irene M. Baehring, nee Sauer, 89, of West Bend, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at St. Luke's Medical Center, Milwaukee.
She was born Sept. 27, 1911, in Allenton, to the late George and Mary (nee Ruhnke) Sauer.

After her marriage to Herbert "Fat" Baehring on Sept. 12, 1936 at Sacred Heart Church, Allenton, the couple settled in Slinger.

In 1941 her husband was elected sheriff of Washington County and they settled in West Bend where she served as matron and cook for the jail and was also a dispatcher for the sheriff's department.

After her husband completed his term as sheriff, the couple continued living in West Bend where Irene worked part time at the former Alice Flower Shop and then at Husar's Jewelers for more than eight years.

Her husband passed away on Nov. 24, 1977.

Irene was a member of the West Bend Woman's Club, the Young at Heart Club, Mission Circle 47, many bridge clubs, was a volunteer drive for Meals on Wheels and also served as a poll worker in the second ward for many years.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary (Roger) Frankowski of Greenfield two grandchildren, Kristine Frankowski of Milwaukee and Mark Frankowski of Greenfield; a sister, Loretta Wiedmeyer of Elgin, Ill.; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15 at Holy Angels Catholic Church, West Bend.

Father John Wutscheck will be the presider, and burial will follow in Holy Angels Cemetery

Visitation at the church only will be Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.

The Schmidt Funeral Home is serving the family.

Randolph J. Schrauth
Randolph J. Schrauth, 86, of Fond du Lac, formerly of Appleton, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Hospice Home of Hope of Fond du Lac.

He was born June 15, 1915, in Campbellsport, to the late Herman and Clara (nee Senn) Schrauth.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and later farmed in the Denmark area and later moved to the Appleton area.

Survivors include six children, Diane Schrauth of Appleton, Karen (Bruce) Diedrich of Two Rivers, Larry Schrauth of Manitowoc, Allen (Lynda) Schrauth of Fond du Lac, Elroy Schrauth of Two Rivers and Deborah (Willard) Hutchausen of Manitowoc; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Jeanette (Harvey) Klotz of West Bend; a sister-in-law, Juliette Schrauth of West Bend; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were three brothers, Walter, Gregory and Irving.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m. at the Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend.

Father Gerald Brittain will officiate, and interment will be in Holy Angels Cemetery, West Bend, at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Visitation at the funeral home will be Wednesday from 4 p.m. until the time of services.

Memorials to Hospice Home of Hope are appreciated.
