Jeffery Scott Gibson, 34, of Bruno, W. Va., died Jan. 4, 2004, at his residence.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Bruno Church of God with the Rev. Roger Frye officiating.

Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert is in charge of arrangements.

Mary M. Carroll
Mary M. Carroll, 86, of Delbarton, W. Va., formerly of Matewan, W. Va., passed away Sunday, January 25, 2004, at Appalachian Regional Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility, South Williamson, Ky.

Born March 28, 1917, in Beauty, Ky., to the late George Kertesz and Julia Kertesz, she was a homemaker and a member of Enon United Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Homer H. Carroll; son, Joe Clark Carroll; and several brothers and sisters.

Surviving is her step-son, Jack S. Carroll Sr. of Delbarton, W. Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 28, 2004, 1 p.m., at Rogers Funeral Home with Jerry McCoy officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens, Maher, W. Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Funeral Home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of R. E. Rogers Funeral Home, Belfry, Ky.

Howard Mason Gore
Howard Mason Gore, 84, of East Fork of Twelve Pole, Dingess, W. Va., passed away Saturday, January 24, 2004, at his residence.

He was born December 12, 1919, in Dingess, W. Va., to the late Willis Gore and Emma J. Dingess and Belva Gore.

Mr. Gore lived a long fulfilling, joyous life and was a retired electrician for Ford Motor Co. as well as a pioneering driver in early NASCAR racing. He was a longtime member of the East Fork Church of God.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Jess Marcum and Irma Ferrell; and his children, Mildred Gore and M. Sue Muncy.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Jane Gore; daughters, Elaine (Larry) Tesh, Virginia (Jack) Dempsey and Rosetta (Ben) Spaulding; sons, Danny (Carol) Gore, French (Peggy) Burke, William H. Burke and Eddie (Samantha) Burke; sister, Marilyn Baisden; three brothers, Ivan (Yvonne) Gore, Kenny (Oppy) Gore, Marvin (Mildred) Gore; 24 grandchildren; and 29 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 27, 2004, 1 p.m., at East Fork Church of God with Rev. Greg Taylor and Rev. Kenny Gore officiating. Burial will follow at the Gore Cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 5 p.m. Monday, January 26, 2004, at the church with a special service at 7 p.m.

Mattie Walls

Mattie Marie Walls, 93 years old, of Verner, W. Va., passed away Monday, January 5, 2004, at her residence in Bruno, W. Va.

Born January 19, 1910, in Gilbert, W. Va., to the late James and Clara Toler Mitchell, she was a homemaker. She was married to the late William Edward Walls. She was of the Protestant faith.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Verlin Walls; one infant daughter, Emogene Walls; six brothers, Harvey Mitchell, Okey Mitchell, Moses Mitchell, Jackson Mitchell, Wess Mitchell and John Thomas Mitchell; and two sisters, Goldie Mitchell and Fannie Hatfield.

Surviving are her son, Fred (Betty) Walls of Bruno, W. Va.; seven daughters, Juanita Colangelo of Amelia, Ohio, Maxine Maynor of Spice Creek, W. Va., Freda Murphy of Andover, Mass., Lois Harper of Ona, Huntington, W. Va., Lucy Toler of Christian, W. Va., Alice (Tommy) Ellis of Varney, W. Va. and Brenda (Ricky) Anderson of Clearfork, W. Va.; 36 grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; nine step great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; and three step great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 9, 2004, 1 p.m., at Mounts Funeral Home with Rev. Dennie May and Rev. Marshall Harless officiating. Burial will follow in the Skyline Cemetery, Justice, W. Va. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Paul A. Toler Jr. will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

Friends may call Mounts Funeral Home on Thursday, January 8, 2004, from 6 - 9 p.m.

Inez G. Rayburn

Inez G. Rayburn, 86, of Edgarton, W. Va., died Monday Jan. 5, 2004, in the Appalachian Regional Hospital at South Williamson, Ky.

Born April 6, 1917 in Pikeville, Ky., she was a daughter of the late James S. Griffith and Ida Williams Griffith.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Rayburn Jr.; two brothers, Ivan and Donald Griffith and a sister Gladys Hargett.

She was a chartered member of the Delorme Bible Church at Edgarton, W. Va. She was retired from the Pike County Board of Education having worked for 42 years.

She is survived by sons, James E. Rayburn (Dianna) of Coal City, W. Va., Charles T. Rayburn (Mary E.) of Majestic-Cedar, Ky.; brothers, Thomas Griffith of Peach Tree City, Georgia and Hubert Griffith of Wichita Falls, Texas; eight grandchildren, James E., Charles T. Jr., Lance, Christopher, Dewey, Felicia, Inez Renee' and Heather; 11 great grandchildren; and she is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Chambers Funeral Services Chapel, Matewan, with the Rev. Hiram Justice officiating. Burial will follow in the Buddy Mounts Cemetery at Majestic-Cedar, Ky.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin Tuesday Jan. 6, 2004, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the chapel.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Services Inc., of Matewan, W. Va.

Talmadge Ramey
Mr. Talmadge Ramey, 89, of Rockford, Ill., formerly of Huntington, W. Va. and Ben Creek, widower of Elmo Short Ramey, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, in Rockford.

He was the former owner of Ramey's Supermarket on Ben Creek. He is survived by a daughter, Rosanne Carnes of Rockford.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington.

Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Frank W. "Poppy" Hatfield
Frank W. "Poppy" Hatfield, 89, of Baisden, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Ky.

He was born July 30, 1914, at Baisden, a son of the late Abb and Zettie Cline Hatfield.

Mr. Hatfield was also preceded in death by his wife, Delia Hatfield; one son, Paul Eugene Hatfield; four brothers, Willie, Arnold, Wade and Junior Hatfield; and one sister, Nell Stanley.

A retired coal miner, he was a member of the Church of God.

He was a life-long member of the United Mine Workers of America. He served as treasurer of Local Union 1078 for many years.

He was a highly-respected member of the Gilbert community and a cherished patriarch of the Hatfield family. Poppy will be forever missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include two sons, Richard (Sandy) Hatfield of Beckley, and Lewis (Mary) Hatfield of Kingston, Mich.; one brother, James "Buddy" (Ann) Hatfield of Gilbert; four sisters, Mona Trent of Hampden, Brosie Tucker of St. Louis, Mo., Mable Ward of Wharncliffe, and Shirley Ward of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Abby (Michael) Mangus of Baisden, Mary Ann (Michael) Mangus and Rachel (Michael) Gill, both of Beckley, Felicia (Rob) Flores of Longwood, Fla., Jennifer (Teddy) Dixon of Beckley, Darren (Debbie) Hatfield and Teresa (Vincent) Vanhorn, both of Kingston, Mich.; 11 great-grandchildren, anna Mangus, Ashley Mangus, Adrian (Robert) Sheppard, McKenna Gill, Sarah Flores, Kaylen Flores, Matthew Flores, Hayden Dixon, Lisa and Megan Mullins, and Blake Vanhorn; one great grandchild, Carlie Mangus; special nieces and nephews, Greta and Junior Harrison and Corey and Shonda Hatfield, all of Baisden; Special great-niece and nephew, Brandi and Cameron Harrison of Baisden.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Mounts Funeral Home in Gilbert with the Rev. Eddie Compton officiating.

Pallbearers will be Michael Berry, Danny Kelly, Robert Sheppard, Joseph Harrison, Eddie Chapman and Scott Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Corey Hatfield, Clifford Mangus, Teddy Dixon, Junior Harrison, Todd Hatfield, Michael Mangus, Michael Gill and Larkin Harrison.

Burial will follow in Hatfield Cemetery at Hampden.

Visitation will held from 6 until 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel.

Drema Copley
Dreama Copley, 46, of Crum, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, in Cabell Huntington Hospital.

She was born April 17, 1957, a daughter of Armenda Bragg Allen and the late Ervin Allen.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Phelps-Son Funeral Home Warfield Chapel with Minister Jesse Allen officiating.

Friends may call all day Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at the Warfield, Ky. chapel.

Albert Evans
Albert Evans, 74, of Lenore, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Williamson Memorial Hospital.

He was born July 22, 1929, in Logan, a son of the late Oscar and Edna Maynard Evans.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Frank Evans.

He was employed as a saw mill worker.

Survivors include six brothers, Ronnie (Pat) Evans of Folkston, Ga., Ken Evans of Lenore, Forest Evans of North Wilkesboro, N.C., Bill (Shirley) Evans of Elgin, Ill., Curt (Loretta) Evans of Carpenterville, Ill., and Donald (Betty) Evans of Williamson; three sisters, Fanny Elshire of Pomeroy, Ohio, Dorothy Dixon and Carol Sue Evans, both of Ragland.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Roger Funeral Home with Minister Mike Bostic officiating. Burial will follow in Lenore Memorial Gardens at Lenore.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at the funeral home. A special service is set for 7 p.m.

Elijah Hensley, Jr.
Elijah "Bud" Hensley, Jr., 78, of Naugatuck, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at his residence.

Mr. Hensley was born Dec. 3, 1925, in Martin County, Ky., a son of the late Elijah and Rosa Moore Hensley, Sr.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Waburn Hensley.

A retired UMWA miner, he was a member of the Church of God, the UMWA and a World War II veteran.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Newsome Hensley; one son, Donald (Linda) Hensley of Belo; two daughters, Virginia (Raymond) Davis and July C. Dulin, both of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Mary Jane Bailey of Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren, Sheila, Michael and Matthew Dulin, Kyra McDonald, Querida Messer and Kevin Davis; 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Weaver Mortuary with Revs. Kenny Gore, Albert Newsome and Lonnie Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Newsome Family Cemetery at Naugatuck.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at the mortuary.

Thelma Hunt

Thelma Hunt, 76, of Mohawk, W. Va., passed away Monday, January 26, 2004, at CAMC Memorial, Charleston, W. Va.

She was born November 21, 1927, in Mohawk, W. Va., to the late Shafter and Omi Lester Messer.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 30, 2004, 11 a.m., at Mt. Zion Old Regular Baptist Church with Elders Curtis Crouse, Roscoe Crouse, Jerry Estep, Phillip Estep, George Baker, Hershel Hurley, John R. Justice, David Lester and Kermit Lester officiating. Burial will follow in the Fred Lester Cemetery, Right Hand Fork, Bull Creek, W. Va.

Simonetta Kaye Browning Riffe, 49, of Hanover, W. Va., passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at Logan Regional Medical Center, Logan, W. Va. due to a motor vehicle accident.

She was born December 16, 1954, in Logan, W. Va., to the late Simon and Etta (Cook) Browning.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 10, 2004, 1 p.m., at Mounts Funeral Home with Rev. Roger Browning and Rev. Alvin Browning officiating. Burial will follow at Leatherwood Memorial Cemetery, Justice, W. Va.
