Carole Curry Lawson
Carole Curry Lawson, 68, of Orlando, Fla., died Thursday, October 2, 2003, of cancer, in Orlando.

Born October 12, 1934, in Delbarton, W. Va., she moved to Orlando, Fla. in 1959. She was a Protestant.

She is surived by her husband, Archel Lawson; son, Kenneth Lawson; daughter, Archa Lynn Kauffman of Orlando, Fla.; and by a brother, Larry Curry of Shelbyville Tn. She had two grandchildren.

Myrtle Ferrell Hatfield
Myrtle Ferrell Hatfield, 86, of Matewan, died on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at Florida's Waterman Hospital in Tavares, Fla.

She was born on Feb. 17, 1917, in Delbarton, a daugther of the late Lorenzo Dow and Tennessee Mahon Ferrell. She was a cook for the Matewan Grade School. She was a member of the Matewan United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 53 years and a past Matron of the Calista Boyd Chapter #104.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hatfield was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Ernest Hatfield; two sisters, Vicie and Mary Margaret; four brothers, James Columbus, Bill, Cephus "Payton" and Lorenzo Dow Jr.; a twin sister Myrtie; and a son-in-law, Marshall Staten.

She is survived by two daughters, Judy Hatfield Postom and her husband Bob of North Carolina, and Pat Staten of Beech Creek; brothers-in-law, V.T. Hatfield of Matewan, James "Cappy" Hatfield of Huntington, W. Va., and Don E. Hatfield of Williamson; two sisters, Ethel Wilson and Nancy Weese, both of Mount Dora, Fla.; six grandchildren, Pam Hatfield, Mike (Debbie) Hatfield and Brian Hatfield, all of North Carolina, Mishell Staten of Tennessee, L.E. Staten of Indiana and Ernest Keith (Cecilia) Staten of Rawl; six great-grandchildren, Patrick Keith Staten, Nathaniel Staten Morrison, Shawn Hatfield, Cory Hatfield, Farren Faith Staten and Marshal Colten Staten; and 32 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at the Matewan United Methodist Church in Matewan with the Rev. Hal Hevener officiating. Burial will follow in the Hatfield Cemtery in Buskirk, Ky.

Nephews and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin Friday, Oct., 10, at the Chambers Funeral Home in Matewan from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Memorial Fund, BB&T Bank. The family will purchase something in her memory for the church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Chambers Funeral Home.

Walker Keen
Walker Keen, 78, of Wharncliffe, W. Va., died on Monday, Oct. 8, 2003, at the Williamson Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Sept. 1, 1925, in Grundy, Va., a son of the late Simon and Waty Horn Keen. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Fern Keen, son-in-law, Edward Lawson; two brothers; and four sisters.

Mr. Keen is survived by one son, Oscar (Lola) Keen of Gilbert; four daughters, Maggie Lawson, Peggy Keen and Sarah Jo (Leonard) Sparks, all of Wharncliffe, and Lovis (Cecil) Cisco of Ragland; one sister, Virginia Roberts of Hillsboro, Ohio; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at the Ben Creek Church of Christ with Evangelists Gene Clemons, Cleatus Smith and Lewis Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Kennedy cemetery at Beech Creek.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Ben Creek Church of Christ. Special services will be at 7 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky.

Madgie Elva Sparks
Madgie Elva Sparks, 81, of Delbarton, died on Oct. 9, 2003, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Ky.

She was born on Dec. 19, 1921, in Lousia, Ky., to the late James and Rosa Belle Patrick Gibson. Mrs. Sparks was a founding member of the Harvest Time Chapel Church in Vanlue, Ohio, in 1972.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Billy James Harrold; one daughter, Barbara Harrold Ziessler; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nine brothers, Sam, William, John, Mont, Barnes, James Sheridan, Noah, Allen and Grover Gibson; one infant brother; 10 sisters, Nancy, Mary, Mila Jane, Martha, Clista, Susan, Bessie, Rita, Emma and Amanda Gibson.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Sparks of Delbarton; three sons, William Arthur, Douglas and William David Sparks, of Findlay, Ohio; four daughters, Kay (Carlos) Harrold Thompson of Fostoria, Ohio, Helen (Clifford) Harrold Gibson of Arcadia, Ohio, JoAnn (James) Harrold Johnston of Findlay, and Rosie (Roger) Workman of Delbarton; 36 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; and special caregivers, Polly Hunt, Gloria Shortridge and Jane Brown

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Victory Christian Center in Lenore with Rev. Terry Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10, at the church with special services beginning at 7 p.m. The Rev. Terry Blankenship will officiate.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton.

William Howard Cassady
William Howard Cassady of Fort Gay, W. Va., died at his residence on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Satur-day, Oct. 11, 2003, at the Stoney Hill Church located on Stone Coal, Kermit.

Visitation will be after 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 10, at the church.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps and Son Funeral Home of Inez, Ky.

Dorothy Fleshman
Dorothy Fleshman, 88, of Buffalo, New York, formerly of Williamson, WV, passed away Nov. 28, 2003 in Buffalo, NY.

Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced later by Rogers Funeral Home at Belfry, Ky.

Rebecca Evans Brumfield
Rebecca Evans Brumfield, 83, of Delbarton, W. Va. departed this barren land on Nov. 30, 2003 which by faith she refused to call this world her home, and chose rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. Esteeming the reproach of Christ's greater riches than the treasures of this world; and not accepting deliverance, that she might obtain a better resurrection, she waited upon the Lord to renew her strength and mounted up with wings as a mighty eagle, and took her flight home to the new Jerusalem.

She made her home with her daughter, Brenda Salyers.

She was born March 23, 1920 in Pigeon Roost Hollow in Delbarton, WV. She was the daughter of the late George W. and Vicie Hensley Evans. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Brumfield; a son, George Brumfield; a daughter, Faye Shields; three brothers, Acie, Albert, and Johnnie Evans; three sisters, Elsie Brumfield, Mary Maynard, and Hattie Brewster.

She was a loving mother and homemaker.

She was also a faithful member for 70 years of the Church of Jesus Christ of Old Regular Baptist Called Sardis.

Survivors include sons: Walter Brumfield, Jr. and wife, Billie, of Cardington, Ohio, Jeff Brumfield and wife, Delsie, of Delbarton, WV, and Wirt Brumfield, and wife, Linda, of Elk Creek, WV.; daughters: Joan Brumfield of St. Louis, MO., Brenda Salyers and husband, Jerry, of Belo, WV., Pamela Hatfield and husband, Clifford, of Montana, Elsie Karen Mahon and husband, Jerry, of Wilkesville, Ohio, Darlene Mounts and husband, Kelly, of Delbarton, WV., and Vicie Stafford and husband, Mark, of Matewan, WV.; a brother, Patterson Evans and wife, Maxine, of Delbarton, WV.; a sister, Nelson Neil Hill of Ohio.; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Old Regular Baptist Called Sardis in Delbarton, WV. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003 at 1 p.m. with the Elders Joe Evans, Billy Brumfield, Brian Dillon, Joey Evans and Tommy Ellis officiating.

Burial will follow at the Evans cemetery at Pigeon Roost, Delbarton, WV.

Friends may call at the church Tuesday evening at 5 p.m., with services starting at 7 p.m.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Chafin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mollie Belcher
Mollie Runyon Belcher, 82, of Hill Crest Drive, Williamson, W. Va., formerly of the Gilbert area, passed away Sunday, November 30, 2003, at Williamson Memorial Hospital, Williamson, W. Va.

She was born August 7, 1921, in Hurley, Va., to the late Matthew Matney and Minerva Mullins Matney Belcher.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2003, 1 p.m., at ilbert church of God, Gilbert, W. Va. with Rev. Reba Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in the Riffe cemetery, Hurley, Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call the Gilbert Church of God at Gilbert, W. Va., Tuesday evening from 6 - 9 p.m.

Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert, W. Va. is in charge of arrangements.

James Hunt
James (Jim) Hunt, 63, of Varney, W. Va., passed away Monday, December 1, 2003, at Logan Regional Medical Center.

Born June 29, 1940, at Ragland, W. Va., he was the son of the late Curtis and Stella Thacker Hunt. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Stella Mae Hunt.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Varney Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Patty Brewer Hunt; sons, Richard Lee Slone Jr. of Mooresville, N.C. and Timothy Scott Slone of Salem, Mo.; daughter, Angel Denise Baisden of Varney, W. Va.; brothers, Richard (Eula) Curry of Colegrove, Ohio, Wilburn (Janie) Hunt of Chesapeake, Ohio and Curtis (Amy) Hunt of Delbarton, W. Va.; sisters, Betty (Jake) Estepp of Columbus, Ohio, Roberta (Mike) Mullins of Delbarton, W. Va., Nancy Evans of Norfolk, Va., June (David) Hall of Ragland, W. Va. and Erma Rolaine of Cleveland, Ohio; grandchildren, Blake and Alyssa Baisden, Hannah Mae Slone, Michael Runyon and Christina Slone.

Funeral services will be held at the Varney Church of God at Varney, W. Va. Wednesday morning, December 3, 2003, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Gary "Bo" Starr and Rev. Gary Starr officiating. Burial will follow in the Brewer cemetery at Varney, W. Va.

Visitation will be held at the church after 6 p.m. with special services starting at 7 p.m. with Rev. Denny May and Rev. Danny Ward officiating Tuesday evening.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Chafin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Adam Meade
Adam Wesley Meade, 17, of Williamson, died Nov. 28, 2003 at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, W. Va.

Born May 29, 1986, in Williamson, he was the son of Patricia Maynard Prince and James Prince of Williamson.

He is also survived by brothers, Scott Meade of Kermit, WV and Shawn Douglas Prince of Williamson.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Weaver Mortuary by Rev. Ron Sanger. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens, Maher.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

Visitation will be Monday evening, Dec. 1, 6-9 p.m. at the mortuary.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson.

Thelma Evans

Thelma Deloris Evans, 63, of Statesville, N.C., died on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at the Iredell Memorial Hospital.

She was born on June 6, 1940, in Mingo County, a daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin and Mary Phillip Hendricks. She was a homemaker and a member of the Landmark Church of God in North Carolina.

Mrs. Evans is survived by her husband, Harry Anderson; sons Jim Blankenship and Luther Evans Jr., both of Statesville, and John Blankenship and Randy Sullivan, both of Matewan; daughters, Jerinel Taylor of Matewan and Debbie Stiltner of Hemptonville, N.C.; a host of brothers and sisters; and 15 grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at the Ellison Hatfield cemetery at Newtown with the Revs. Dave Stratton and Jim Lockard officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Chambers Funeral Services of Matewan and Nicholson Funeral Home of Statesville.

Louis Blankenship

Louis Blankenship, 68, of Rawl, died on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at his residence.

He was born on Dec. 8, 1934, in Jamboree, Ky., a son of the late Richard E. and Kathleen Mounts Blankenship. He was a retired coal miner.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Julius "Shorty" Blankenship, Bobby Blankenship and Franklin Blankenship; and sisters, Augusta Hicks and Mandy Thomas.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Evans; son, Orville (Donnetta) Blankenship of Rawl; Ruth (Jamey) Layne of Rawl, Betty (Ohio) Basiden of Delbarton, and Maybell (Lester) Tibbs of Johns Creek, Ky.; brothers, Woodrow (Reba) Blankenship and James (Doris) Blankenship both of Williamson; sisters, Shelby Hinsdale of East Bend, N.C.; Julie (Warren) Thistle of Homosassa, Fla., Patricia Hatfield of Red Jacket, Priscilla (Michael) Gooslin and Brenda Haynes of Walbash, Ind.; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at the Rawl Church of God in Jesus' Name in Rawl with the Revs. Larry Brown and Ed Lockard officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5, at the church with services at 7 p.m. nightly.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Chambers Funeral Services of Matewan.
