NEPPS, CARL ALLEN, JR.

Carl Allen "Bud" Nepps, Jr., 64, of Marietta, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 1996, at Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born in Grantsville, a son of the late Carl A. and Virginia McKinley Nepps, Sr. He was a graduate of West Milford High School, West Milford, and Salem College with a degree in business administration. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of Korean War, serving from 1952-1955. He was a branch manager for Continental Insurance Co., Parkersburg, and was a member of VFW Post 5108, Marietta, BPO Elks Lodge, Clarksburg, and Marietta Country Club. Surviving are his wife, Linda Robinson; four sisters, Jacquelyn Crim of Westerville, Ohio, Wyeene Goodwin of Columbus, Sue Gorman of Patchogue, N.Y., and Pollyanna Carney of Haymarket, Va.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Services were held at Shirley United Methodist Church, Tyler County, with Rev. Nancy O'Dell officiating. Burial was in Shirley cemetery.

NEWELL, FRED C.

Fred C. Newell, 73, of Big Bend, died Wednesday, May 1, 1996, at his residence. He was born in Grass Run, Gilmer County, a son of the late Cella and Iva Leila Suttle Newell. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II and two terms in Civilian Conserva-tion Corps. He retired from Calhoun County Board of Education as a custodian. He was a former member of Brooksville Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Dora Jones Newell; two daughters, Yvonne Poorman of Spencer and Dora Kay Riggs of Big Springs; one brother, Tommy Newell of Grantsville; four half-sisters, Fanny Drummond of Lost Creek, Dorris Precopa of Akron, Faye Bennett of Richmond, Va., and Mary Losh of Lost Creek; one half-brother, Judson Newell of Clarksburg; five grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Larry Newell; one sister, Bethel Newell; and one great-granddaughter, Amber Berreth. Services were held at the Newell family residence, Big Bend, with Rev. Fred Sparks officiating. Burial was in Newell Family cemetery, between Brooksville and Grantsville.

NICHOLAS, HOPE

Hope Wilson Nicholas, 90, of Dunbar, formerly of Grantsville, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 1996, at Arthur B. Hodges Center, Charleston. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late James M. and Emma Barr Wilson. She was a former deputy sheriff in Calhoun County, and served as city clerk in Grantsville. She had resided in Dunbar for 23 years. Surviving are one son, Nyle Nicholas of Dunbar; one sister, Evelyn McCoy of Florida; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Robert Nicholas officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem cemetery.

NICHOLS, FRED E.

Rev. Fred E. Nichols, 67, of Spencer, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 1996, at Jackson General Hospital, Ripley. He was born in Roane County, a son of the late William E. and Icy Ferrell Nichols. He was a timberman and pastored in surrounding counties for the past 33 years. He had most recently served as pastor of Cherry Valley Church and was a member of Keffer United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Betty Haverty Nichols; two daughters, Susan Porter and Cheryl Chambers, both of Spencer; two sons, Michael Nichols of Beech and Jody Nichols of Reedy; four sisters, Mary Haverty and Betty Alvis, both of Spencer, Golden Kincaid of Waterford and Orpha Fox of Arnoldsburg; three brothers, Raymond "Short" Nichols of Spencer, Muarl Nichols of Waterford and Jack Nichols of New York; eight grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and four great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Lori Nichols; three sisters, Hazel McKown, Faye McCully Johns and Tressie Ball; and four brothers, Bob Nichols, Herb Nichols, Oval Nichols and Ben Nichols. Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Richard Webb and Rev. Roy I. Smith officiating. Burial was in Otto cemetery near Spencer.

NICHOLS, HOY P.

Hoy Preston Nichols, 76, of Clendenin, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 1996, in Charleston General Hospital. He was born in Roane County, a son of the late John Robert and Ann Nichols. He was owner and manager of the former Nichols Maytag Appliance Store and Farmers Co-Op Store, both in Clendenin. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a Protestant. Surviving are his wife, Myrtle S. Fields Nichols of Clendenin; one daughter, Sheila Kay Ball of Elizabeth; three brothers, Ray Nichols of Hubbard, Ohio, Jay A. Nichols of Grantsville and Charles Nichols of Lynco; and three sisters, Mary Fields, Melba Sheets and Maxine Nichols, all of Clendenin. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard Nichols, James Nichols and Esley Nichols; one sister, Martha Laughry; and one son, Jarrell Wayne Nichols. Services were held at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with Rev. Virgil Ross officiating. Burial was in Reamer Hill cemetery.

NICHOLS, M. K.

Milford K. Nichols, 70, of Arnoldsburg, died Sunday, May 19, 1996, at St. Joseph's Hospital, after a short illness. He was born in Clay County, a son of Beulah J. Grose Nichols of Clay and the late Kelles N. Nichols. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the airborne infantry. He was a printer for 50 years, former owner of Grantsville Printing Co., and publisher of The Grantsville News and The Clay Messenger, and a farmer. He was a member of Grantsville IOOF Lodge. Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Mary E. Dodrill Nichols; one son, Newton Nichols of Grantsville; two daughters, Mary Riffle of Charleston and Ellen Bowe of Cross Lanes; two sisters, Willadene Fitzwater of Clay and Wilma Jean Workman of Procious; seven brothers, Chilton Nichols of Clay, Lenwood Nichols of Xenia, Ohio, Arthur Nichols of Dayton, Ohio, Brisen Nichols of Maysel, Marshall Nichols of Manassas, Va., Clinton Nichols of Clay, and Glen Nichols of Delroy, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation was scheduled Wednesday, 6 to 8 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Services are scheduled Thursday, 1 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. James Pearson officiating, and burial in Orma Methodist Church cemetery, Orma.

OFFUTT, MAE S.

Mae S. Offutt, 87, of Vienna, formerly of Arnoldsburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 1996, at her residence. She was born in Arnoldsburg, a daughter of the late Roy and Cora Greathouse Parsons. She was a member of Arnoldsburg Farm Women's Club and American Legion Auxiliary. She was a Calhoun County Belle in 1982. She was a member of Knotts Baptist Church, Arnoldsburg. Surviving are one brother, Don Parsons of Vienna; one stepdaughter, Delma Kemper of Millstone; two nieces; and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Seldon Starcher; her second husband, Arthur Offutt; two brothers, Luther Parsons and Johnnie Parsons; and one sister, Cleo Clark. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Mike Worf officiating. Entombment was in Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Parkersburg.

OSBORNE, R. FERN

R. Fern Osborne, 58, of Vienna, died Monday, Aug. 5, 1996, at Camden- Clark Memorial Hospital. She was born in Upshur County, a daughter of Robert F. and Effie M. Bender Gillispie of Rock Cave. She was a graduate of Mountain State Business College and an employee of Martin Marietta Co., Parkersburg. She was a member of Canaan Community Church, Rock Cave. Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband, James R.Osborne, and one brother, Joseph Gillispie of Kingwood. Services will be held on Thursday, 1 p.m., at Canaan Community Church, with Rev. Alfred Hickman officiating, and burial in the church cemetery. Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, and noon to 1 p.m., Thursday, at the church.

PARSONS, IRA JR.

Ira Parsons, Jr., 77, of Arnoldsburg, formerly of Washington County, died Tuesday, Mar. 12, 1996, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Ira and Martha Marks Parsons. He was a World War II veteran, and was employed at Dravo Corp., Marietta, for 25 years prior to his retirement in 1983. Surviving are his wife, Vina Marks Parsons; four daughters, Sharon Duff of Dart, Patty Parsons, and Nancy Stevens, both of Marietta, and Linda Kinney of Whipple; several brothers and sisters; three grandchildren, Mike Stevens of Marietta and Sherry Duff and Kelly Carpenter, both of Dart; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eva Sayres Parsons. Services were held at McClure-Schafer Funeral Home, Marietta. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery, Lowell, with military rites.

PARTIN, JEWELL B.

Jewell B. Partin, 73, of Fort Pierce, Fla., died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 1996, at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center, Fort Pierce. She was born in Altizer, a daughter of the late George and Esther Naylor Gibson. She was a nursing supervisor at Fort Pierce Memorial Hospital for 10 years and a registered nurse and former nursing supervisor at Akron City Hospital. She had been a resident of Fort Pierce for 39 years where she was a member of First United Methodist Church. Surviving is one brother, Delbert Scott of Akron. She was preceded in death by her husband, John B. Partin. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating. Burial was in Gibson cemetery, Arnoldsburg.

PETTIT, MILDRED M.

Mildred M. Pettit, 91, of Munday, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 1996, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, following an extended illness. She was born in Munday, a daughter of the late Thomas James and Mary Ellen Richard Bell. She was a homemaker and a long time member of Bell Chapel United Methodist Church. Surviving are three sons, Lewis Pettit and Tom Pettit, both of Munday, and Jack Pettit of Tanner; one daughter, Shirley Thomas of Mineral Wells; one sister, Ada Wilson of Munday; 15 grand-children; 21 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Pettit, in 1977; one son, Norman Pettit; one daughter, Norma McCune; one brother, Shirley Bell; one sister, Addie Bell; one grandson; and one great- grandson. Services will be held Thursday, Oct. 24, 1 p.m., at Busch Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with Rev. Alfred R. Hickman officiating. Burial will be in Wolverton cemetery, Munday.

PETTY, CAROLINE

Caroline "June" Petty, 56, of Massillon, Ohio, died Saturday, July 20, 1996, at the home of her sister in Mentor, Ohio. She was born in Grantsville, daughter of Oren and Virginia Haddox Clayton. She lived in Massillon since 1964. She was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles 190 Auxiliary. Surviving are one daughter, Chris Garlando of Massillon; one son, Tim Petty of Massillon; one step-son, Jearald Petty of Akron, Ohio; one sister, Donna Maxwell of Mentor, three brothers, Jerry Clayton of Olmstead Falls, Ohio; David Wright of Eastlake, Ohio, and John Wright of Lyndhurst, Ohio; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She- was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Petty, in 1995; and a grandson. Services were held at Paquelet Funeral Home, Massillon, with Rev. Alan Swinderman officiating. Burial was in Massillon cemetery.
