Austin E. Ayers, 74, of Clarington, Ohio, died Wednesday, May 13, 1999, at Belmont Community Hospital, Bellaire, Ohio. He was born in Grantsville, the son of the late Iva and Ruth Freshour Ayers. He was retired from Ohio Ferro Alloy Corp., Clarington. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5565, Powhatan Point. He was a Protestant. Surviving are one son, Austin E. Ayers, Jr., of Clarington; two daughters, Joyce Starkey of Woodsfield and Lena Vallelonga of Powhatan Point; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several cousins in Calhoun County. He was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Johnson. Services were held at Rush Funeral Home, Clarington. Burial was in Clarington cemetery.

Deloris P. Bailey, 56, of Wilmot, Ohio, died Monday, Apr. 5, 1999, at Massillon Community Hospital, Massillon, Ohio. She was born in Orma, the daughter of the late Perry and Dorothy White Butler. She was a former employee of Shady Lawn Nursing Home, Dalton, Ohio. Surviving are her husband, Robert G. Bailey; one son, Ricky Bailey of Wooster, Ohio; two daughters, Marilyn Conley of Wooster, Ohio, and Barb Bailey of Dalton, Ohio; two brothers, Burl Butler of Arnoldsburg and Gene Butler of Orville, Ohio; two sisters, Bessie Hall of Arnoldsburg and Ruth Yearian of Spencer; and three grandchildren. Services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Carl Marks officiating, and burial in Bailey cemetery, Minnora. Visitation was scheduled Wednesday, 5 to 8 p.m.
BAILEY, HENRY
Henry B. Bailey, 79, of Nicut (Shock community), died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at his home following a long illness. He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Floyd and Della Carter Bailey. He was a driller in the oil and gas industry and a farmer. He was a member of Frozen Run Baptist Church, Shock. Surviving are his wife, Beulah Brady Bailey; one sister, Doss Hurley of North Carolina; and one son-in-law, Kenny Fisher of Glenville. He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Bailey, and one daughter, Linda Fisher. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Alva Lloyd officiating. Burial was in Bailey Family cemetery, Nicut.
BAILEY, VERA
Vera H. Bailey, 88, of Arnoldsburg, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was born in Rocksdale, the daughter of the last Salathiel and Florence Starcher Hickman. She was a Glenville State College graduate and a retired Calhoun County elementary school teacher. She was a member of Stoney Point United Methodist Church, Arnoldsburg Homemaker's Club, West Fork Community Action, Phoebe Cunningham Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, Calhoun County Retired Teachers Association, and Grantsville Chapter of Order of Eastern Star. Surviving are one son, Gary Bailey of Vienna; one daughter, Wilma Siers of Parkersburg; four grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oris W. Bailey. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial was in Gibson cemetery, Arnoldsburg.
BALL, HADSEL
Hadsel B. Ball, 82, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at Roane General Hospital. He was born and was a lifelong resident of Frametown Road near Stumptown and was the son of the late Howard and Flora Boone Ball. He was a graduate of Glenville State Normal School and West Virginia University where he earned a master of music and fine arts. He was a musician and a retired music teacher and band director having taught eight years at Normantown High School and 34 years at Spencer Junior High School. He was a member of Glenville United Presbyterian Church and Glenville Historical Society, served on Folk Festival committees, was a Boy Scout leader, and was a Mason for over 50 years. Surviving are three sisters, Pauline Kelly of White Oak, N.C., Mildred Wise of Clarksburg and Hope Moore of Pomeroy, Ohio; niece, Pam O'Brien of Spencer; cousins, Gary Knight and Graham Knight of Grantsville; special friends, Timothy Jurkovich and family of Spencer; and several other nieces, nephews, and cousins. He donated his body to West Virginia University Human Gifts Registry in Morgantown where it will be interred. Memorial service arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Lawrence Lee Banfield, 62, of Chloe, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at his residence following a long illness. He was born in Russell, Ky. He was a former employee of Union Carbide Corp. and member of Trout Unlimited, Kanawha Valley Chapter. He was a Presbyterian by faith. Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Jane Banfield; two sons, Larry Banfield, Jr., of Parkersburg and Arnie Banfield of Chloe; and one daughter, Cara Banfield of Pinch. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Herk McGraw officiating.

Flora Barker, 85, of Grantsville, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, in Glenville. She was a member of Chapel Baptist Church, Nobe. Surviving are one daughter, Virginia Simmons of Grantsville; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by several brothers and one sister. Services were held at Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., Glenville, with Rev. Ronzel Roberts officiating. Burial was in Kight cemetery.

Deborah R. Barnes, 35, of Pennsboro, died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg. She was born in Clarksburg, the daughter of Jackie Lee and Darlene Ross Smarr of West Union. She was a supervisor of nutrition at Doddridge County Senior Center, West Union, and was a Protestant. Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, Michael Barnes; two children, Erika Barnes and John Michael Barnes of Pennsboro; four sisters, Jackie LeBel, Bridgette Greaver, Anita Johnston and Jessyca Smarr, all of West Union; two brothers, Brent Smarr of West Union and Greg Nicholson of Grantsville; and paternal grandmother, Goldie Underwood of West Union. She was preceded in death by one sister, Tina Nicholson. Services were held at McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home, Pennsboro, with Rev. Dallas Waggle officiating. Burial was in Ellenboro Masonic cemetery, Ellenboro.

Eleanor "Toots" Barnes, 78, of Grantsville, died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at Braxton Memorial Hospital, Gassaway. She was born at Joker, the daughter of the late Everett and Ella F. Hathaway Gainer. She was an elementary school teacher at Red Hill School during World War II and was retired from Rubber Fabricators, Inc., Grantsville. Surviving are her husband, Fred O. Barnes; one son, Richard Barnes of Parkersburg; one daughter, Elizabeth Anne Smith of Grantsville; two grandsons, Thomas C. Barnes of Charleston and Jason Bradley Smith of Grantsville; four granddaughters, Ramona B. MacGregor of Athens, Ohio, Shannon Dee Johnson of Grantsville, Meredith L. Cornell of Huntington and Heather Ann Smith of Lexington, Ky.; and 11 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Dr. William Barnes; four brothers, Everett Gainer, Jr., Vernon, Artie and Lora Gainer; and two sisters, Scottie Dawson and Audrey Garretson. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

Fred O. Barnes, 85, of Vaughan Road, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at his residence. He was born in Big Springs, the son of the late William O. and Adeline Cunningham Barnes. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 88th Blue Devil Division in Italy and Africa. He served in three major campaigns and was awarded the Bronze Star. He attended Glenville State College and West Virginia Wesleyan College and graduated from West Virginia University, where he earned a master's degree. He taught at the University of Florence, Italy, following World War II, and also attended the University of Florence. He was a retired Calhoun County High School teacher with 39 years of service and a retired State Farm Insurance agent in Grantsville with more than 30 years of service. Surviving are one son, Richard Barnes of Parkersburg; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Smith of Grantsville; one brother, Shirley Barnes of Sissonville; two grandsons; four granddaughters; and 11 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Barnes, and one son, Dr. William Barnes. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Kevin Church officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

Gladys G. Basnett, 89, of Mt. Zion, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg. She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Stonewall Jackson and Alberta Amos Bell. She was a homemaker. Surviving are two daughters, Dollie Marks and Eva Marks, both of Mt. Zion; one sister, Thelma Jenkins of Mogadore, Ohio; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett W. Basnett, and one daughter, Betty Basnett. Services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Carl Marks officiating. Burial will be in Blackshire cemetery, Big Bend. Amy Lynn Bates, 14, of Newton Falls, Ohio, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at her residence. She was born in Warren, Ohio, the daughter of Jeffrey C. Richards of Big Springs and Robin Coolidge Greer of Newton Falls. She attended Warren Christian School and Newton Falls Schools and was active in several sports. Surviving in addition to her parents are one sister, Tammy Jo Richards of Newton Falls; two step-sisters, Marianne Greer of Sedonna, Ariz., and Melinda Ritchie of Massillon, Ohio; paternal grandmother, Glenna Richards of Big Springs; and maternal grandmother, Rosalee D. Bates of Newton Falls. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gary Michael and Jeramie Bates. Services were held at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home, Garrettsville, Ohio. Burial was in Windham Township cemetery.
