HELMIC, KATIE R.

Katie Ruth Helmic, 74, of Parkersburg, died Tuesday, June 3, 1997, at her residence. She was born in Oka, Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Hoke and Edna Keeten Jarvis. She was a homemaker and retired from Wiseman's Dept. Store in Gauley Bridge after 20 years of service. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 72 of Gauley Bridge and Gauley Bridge Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher, choir member and officer of American Baptist Women. Surviving are her husband, Albert Helmic of Parkersburg; one son, Bill Helmic of Parkersburg; one brother, Raymond Brown Jarvis of Spencer; one sister, Daisy Vivian Butcher of Millsboro, Del.; one grandson, Scott Helmic of Parkersburg; and two great-grandsons, Ryan Helmic and Dustin Helmic, both of Parkersburg. Services were held at Gauley Bridge Baptist Church, with Rev. Mark Jarvis and Rev. Tom Goldston officiating. Entombment was in Sunset Memory Gardens, Parkersburg.

HELMICK, DONNA J.

Donna J. Helmick, 33, of Nicut, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 1997, at her residence. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Don Helmick and Jessie M. Helmick of Orma. Surviving, in addition to her mother, are three brothers, Dennis Helmick, Denver Helmick and James Helmick, all of Orma. Services were held at Stump Funeral Horne, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Carl Marks officiating. Burial was in Metz cemetery.

HELMICK, JESSIE

Jessie Helmick, 73, of Nicut, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, in Roane General Hospital. She was born in Braxton County, a daughter of the late Tom and Minnie McCumbers McCune. She was a homemaker. Surviving are three sons, Dennis Helmick, Denver Helmick and James Helmick, all of Orma; one brother, Raymond McCune of Minnora; four sisters, Lakie Wilson of Glenville, Bertha Cottrell of Pennsylvania, and Stella Nichols and Maxine Stump, both of Spencer; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Helmick; two sons and one daughter. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial was in Metz cemetery, Nicut.

HICKMAN, MILDRED M.

Mildred M. Hickman, 74, of Parkersburg, died Tuesday, April 15, 1997, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. She was born in Grantsville, a daughter of Olive Blankenship Cline of Parkersburg and the late Rudolph Cline. She owned and operated Lelegant Beauty Lounge for 22 years. She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary of AmVets Post 19, Parkersburg. Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband of 55 years, Robert L. Hickman; one daughter, Judith R. Sellers of Parkersburg; one son, Daniel R. Hickman of Parkersburg; four brothers, Charles Cline and Ivan Cline, both of Parkersburg, Bill Cline of South Carolina and Larry Cline of Washington, W.Va.; three sisters, Katheryn Hopkins of Parkersburg, Barbara Cornell of Waverly and Dianne Harper of Vienna; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Forrest Cline. Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Donald Yeager officiating. Burial was in Parkersburg Memorial Gardens.

HICKS, MINNIE

Minnie Hicks, 93, of Parkersburg, died Tuesday, April 1, 1997, at her residence. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late John Jake and Martha E. Kelly May. She was a homemaker and a member of Williamstown Church of Christ. Surviving are two sons, Creed Hicks of Cutler and Delbert Hicks of Parkersburg; four daughters, Rosie Wolfe, Wilma Sims, Joy Willadean Marguis and Ilene Echols, all of Parkersburg; 28 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one aunt, Nancy McGeorge of Chloe. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley Creed Hicks; two daughters, Bonnie Lucas and Donnie May Arthur; and one grandchild. Services were held Friday at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Donald Carty officiating. Burial was in Evergreen North cemetery.

HILDRETH, DESSIE MAE

Dessie Mae Hildreth, 84, of Spencer, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at her residence. She was born in Looneyville, a daughter of the late French L. and Lora Mae Nichols. She was a waitress at several Spencer area restaurants since 1950 and was a member of First Baptist Church, Spencer. Surviving are one son, Bobby Hildreth of Vienna; two sisters, Ruth Farrell of Akron and Verba Deweese of Munday; one brother, Lee Webb of Salem, Ohio; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Carol J. King and Glendora J. Hildreth; one sister, Vonnie Nutter; and four brothers, Harry Webb, Benjamin "Junior" Webb, Hume Webb and Hobert Webb. Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Leon Strickland officiating. Burial was in Clover cemetery, Spencer.

HILL, NORA M.

Nora M. Hill, 97, of Grantsville, died Wednesday, Mar. 5, 1997, at her residence. She was born in VanBuren, Maine, a daughter of the late Charles D. and Emma Theriault Cyr. She was a former employee of Walgreen Corp. for 16 years and EKCO Corp. Surviving are her husband, Henry Fred Hill; one daughter, Hilda K. Hume of Grantsville; one sister, Colombe Lynch of Waldorf, Mass.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Roderick Hitchcock and Hadley Hitchcock; and one granddaughter, Arleyn T. Reamer. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Don Tranel officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's cemetery, Chicago, Ill.

HILL, VIRGINIA S.

Virginia S. Hill, 83, of Parkersburg, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at her son's residence in Charleston. She was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late Elem Ward and Delphia Ward Wilson. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Rebekah Circle, Parkersburg Woman's Club, Mary Martha Sunday School class, and St. Andrews United Methodist Church. Surviving are one son, James Ira Hill, Jr., of Charleston; two sisters, Ruth Bechtle of Point Pleasant and Lakie Gherke of Grantsville; one brother, David Ward of Snohomish, Wash.; two half- sisters, Betty Craig of Westerville, Ohio, and Alice Lee Beougher of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; one half-brother, Fred Wilson of Pataskala, Ohio; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ira Hill, Sr.; one brother, Brooks Ward; and two half-brothers, Bernie Wilson and Urlic Wilson. Services were held at Ogdin-Kimes Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Paul Russell officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.

HOLBERT, HALLIE R.

Hallie R. Holbert, 88, of Bramblewood Village, died Sunday, April 13, 1997, at Roane General Hospital. She was born in Gilmer County, a daughter of the late Marshall A. and Louisa J. Weaver Lewis. She was a homemaker and a Methodist. Surviving are one daughter, Betty Joe Wilson of Grantsville; one son, Argel D. Lewis of South Point, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Louella Platzer of Cleveland; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 14 stepgrandchildren and 32 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas B. Holbert; four sisters, one brother, four stepsons, one stepdaughter, one grandson, four stepgrandchildren, and one great-grandson. Services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial will be in Ward-Wilson cemetery, Grantsville. Visitation was scheduled 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday.

HORTON, MARGARET L.

Margaret L. "Marge" Horton, 62, of Vienna, died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Parkersburg. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Audra and Maysel White Lowther. She was a former manager of Parkers-burg Community College cafeteria. She was employed at Nelson's Drug Store, Parkersburg. She was a Protestant. Surviving are one daughter, Lynn Gaskins of Vienna; one son, Robert L. Horton, Jr., of Vienna; one sister, Frances Freeland of Parkersburg; one brother, Donald Morris of Parkersburg; two granddaughters, Lorenia Gaskins and Kristi Whitehead, both of Vienna; and one grandson, Anthony Gaskins of Vienna. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Larry Horton, and one brother, Glenn Lowther. Services were held at Vaughan Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Mike Stephens officiating. Burial was in Evergreen North cemetery.

HOSKINS, HARRY CHARLES

Harry Charles Hosldns, 68, died Sunday, Mar. 23, 1997, of Lou Gehrig's Disease, at his home in Georgia. He was born in Arnoldsburg, the eldest son of Edra Crawford and the late Disco Hoskins. Memorial services were planned in Georgia.

HOUCHIN, ALMEDA

Almeda Houchin, 101, of Beech, died Thursday, Mar. 13, 1997, at Roane General Hospital. She was born in Oka, a daughter of the late Josiah and Caroline E. McClain Jarvis. She was a member of Beech United Methodist Church. Surviving are four daughters, Pearl Hall of Barberton, Ohio, Ruby Carpenter of Orma, Kathleen Sears of Norton, Ohio, and Jean Boggs of Big Springs; one son, Rex Houchin of Orma; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. Houchin; and three sons, Chester Houchin, Garrett Houchin and Harley Houchin. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Homer Hensley officiating. Burial was in Houchin cemetery, Arnoldsburg.

HUBER, MERLE

Merle Huber, 86, of Parkersburg, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Stephen L. and Hattie Poling Crawford. She was a homemaker and a member of Sunrise Baptist Church. Surviving are one son, Arthur J. Huber of Parkersburg; two brothers, Veon Crawford and Harold Crawford, both of Parkersburg; two sisters, Juanita Cheuvront of Parkersburg and Evadeen Sellers of Kennewick, Wash.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll "C.J." Huber; two sons, Darrell E. Huber and Clyde G. Huber; three brothers, Orvle Ted Crawford, Marvin Crawford and Woodrow Crawford; and one sister, Ivalee Crawford Lee. Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Stergel Vincent officiating. Burial was in Evergreen North cemetery.

HUGHES, ORVAL C.

Orval C. Hughes, 79, of Creston, died Sunday, July 20, 1997, at his residence. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Homer and Ocie Gainer Hughes. He retired from W.Va. Dept. of Highways. He was a farmer and a Methodist. Surviving are his wife, Lula Starcher Hughes; two sons, Orval Hughes, Jr., of Elizabeth and Kenneth Hughes of Parkersburg; one daughter, Kathryn Maze of Parkersburg; and three sisters, Dorothy Reynolds, Fostine Bell and Ellen Starcher, all of Parkersburg. He was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters, and one great-grandson. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 1:30 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Lewis Villers and Rev. Delmas Stutler officiating, and burial in Knights of Pythias cemetery, Elizabeth.
