Ruth Burns, 86, of Sand Ridge, died Wednesday, July 12, 1995, at her residence after an extended illness. She was born in Index, Gilmer County, a daughter of the late Joshua D. and Samilda Kelley Smith. She was a member of Rush Run Baptist Church. Surviving are one son, Stanley Burns of Lake Lynn, Pa.; one daughter, Barbara Stump of Dublin, Va.; six grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clairel "Tarzan" Burns, in 1982; seven brothers; and three sisters. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Sand Ridge cemetery.
BRANNON, CECIL G.
Cecil G. Brannon, 83, of Mt. Nebo, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 1995, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, after a long illness. He was born in Orma, a son of the late Peter and Vietta Pet Boggs Brannon. He was a retired coal miner, owner of Brannon's Store in Mt. Nebo, and a member of Midland Trail No. 166 Masonic Lodge and Hilltop Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Minnie Keffer Brannon; two daughters, Lena Hilton of Mt. Hope and Sharon Sawyers of Richwood; three sons, Cecil Gail of Cleveland, Ohio, Thomas Lee of Louisville, Ken., and Carl Edward of Mt. Nebo; two sisters, Marie Carpenter of Marietta, Ohio, formerly of Orma, and Zadia Greathouse of Richwood; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Roscoe Brannon, and a sister, Lula Norman of Minnora. Services were held at Wallace-Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle, with Rev. Garlin Groves officiating. Burial was in the Brannon Family cemetery, Mt. Nebo, with Masonic rites conducted by Midland Trail Lodge No. 166.

Lena R. Butler, 93, of Charleston, formerly of Minnora, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 1995, at her daughter's residence in Charleston. She was born in Braxton County, a daughter of the late James and Prudence Lowers Conrad. She was a homemaker and a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, near Orma. Surviving are three daughters, Norma Stuck of Charleston, Ilene Metz of Orma and Murilene Witt of Cocoa, Fla.; one son, Nolan Butler of Chloe; two brothers, James "Buck" Conrad of Canton, Ohio, and Bernard Conrad of Dayton, Ohio; one sister, Betty Conley of Spencer; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Butler, in 1941; one son, Arlen Butler, in 1970; three brothers; and one sister. Graveside services were held.

Zella J. Cain, 72, of Arnoldsburg, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 1995, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg. She was born in Grantsville, a daughter of the late George W. and Clara Bell Stump Cain. She was a homemaker. Surviving are several nieces and nephews, and several cousins. She was preceded in death by eight sisters and four brothers. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Franklin Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Harley Bailey officiating, and burial in Clayton T. Stump cemetery, Calhoun County.

Cecil M. Carpenter, 78, of Orma, Beech Community, died Friday, Jan. 20, 1995, at Roane General Hospital, after a sudden illness. He was born in Orma, a son of the late Alpheus and Rebecca S. White Carpenter. He was with U. S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II and was retired from McMahan-Leib Co., Anderson, Ind. He was a member of Beech United Methodist Church and served as Adult Bible Class Leader. Surviving are his wife, Ruby Smith Carpenter; two sons, Stanley D. Carpenter of Morristown, Ind., and Cecil C. Carpenter of Charleston; one daughter, Janice Nichelson of Anderson, Ind.; one stepson, Daniel L. Smith of Orma; one sister, Leslie Roberts of Orma; three brothers, Brooks Carpenter of Walker, Wade Carpenter of Gassaway and Alpha Carpenter of Port Huron, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ada Roberts Carpenter, and one sister. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial was in Anderson Memorial Park, Anderson, Ind.

Holly J. Carpenter, 75, of Arnoldsburg, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 1995, at Louis Johnson Veteran's Administration Hospital, Clarksburg, after an extended illness. He was born in Roane County, a son of the late James C. and Hattie Gay Starcher Carpenter. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the African, European and Middle Eastern Theaters. He was a retired crane operator. Surviving are two sisters, Pearl Parsons of Arnoldsburg and Ora Mae Jackson of North Carolina; and two brothers, Charles R. "Bob" Carpenter of Arnoldsburg and Ed Carpenter of Mineral Wells. He was preceded in death by one sister; and two brothers. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Carl Marks officiating.

She was born in Orma, a daughter of the late Peter Thomas and Vietta "Pet" Boggs Brannon. She was a homemaker and a member of Orma United Methodist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Eva Mae Hosey of Ocala, Fla., and Muriel McCormick of Mentor-on-the-Lake, Ohio; six sons, Joshia Carpenter of Nitro, Harry Carpenter of Parkersburg, Gail Carpenter of Rochester, N.Y., Joseph Glenn Carpenter of Medina, Ohio, Jack Carpenter of Seville, Ohio, and Clifford Carpenter of Orma; one sister, Zadie Greathouse of Richwood; 21 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Greely Carpenter, and two infant sons. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Bill Angel officiating. Michael L. Carpenter, 41, died Thursday, July 20, 1995. He was born in Ravenna, Ohio, and was a local resident all of his life. He attended Calvary Temple, Ellet. He worked for N&W Railroad for nine years along side his grandfather, Lonnie Clarence Carpenter, originally of Grantsville. Surviving are his mother, Edna McCoy; sister, Jerri Halloway; grandmother, Belva Carpenter; and uncles, Lawrence and Richard Carpenter. Services were held at Hecker Funeral Home, Uniontown, Ohio, with Rev. Lindsey Hayes officiating. Burial was in Kilgore cemetery, Kilgore, Ohio.

Lawrence B. Carter, 63, of Canton, Ohio, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 1995, at his residence after a brief illness. He was born in Braxton County, a son of the late Hobert and Donna Miller Carter. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was employed by Republic Steel for 39 years. He was a member of Linden Lodge 83, AF&AM. Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Joyce Perkins Carter; one daughter, Susan Carter Santavicca of Canton; one brother, Virgil Carter of South Carolina; and two sisters, Ruth Brzski of St. Charles, Ill., and Helen Crouse of Creston, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband, Brooks D. Chambers; two brothers; and one sister. Services will be held Thursday, 3 p.m., at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Vienna, with Rev. John Koerner officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitations were scheduled 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, and noon-3 p.m., Thursday.

He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late George W. and Ila Ash Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from Roadway Trucking Co., Cleveland. Surviving are one daughter, Anita K. Church of Cleveland; two sons, John Church of Canton and George Church of Coshocton, Ohio; three brothers, Cecil Church of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jesse Church of Medina, Ohio, and George Church of Arnoldsburg; four sisters, Bessie Arden and Evelyn Church, both of Spencer, Edna Woodward of Mogadore, Ohio, and Shirley Davis of Lakewood, Ohio; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one infant son; and one sister, Hazel Church. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Evangelist Larry Haught officiating. Onie Church, 96, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 1995, at Americare-Arlington, Parkersburg, after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Nathan and Frena Starcher. She was a housekeeper and caretaker in Parkersburg, and was a member of Fairview Union Church, Orma. Surviving are two brothers, Demmy Starcher of Roseville, Ohio, and Ferd Starcher of Horner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Church, in 1956. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with burial in St. Paul cemetery, Mt. Zion.
CLAYTON, BUDGE
Budge Clayton, 77, of Roseville, Calif., formerly of Calhoun County, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 1994, in a Sacramento, Calif., hospital. He was a son of Benjamin and Clara Clayton. He taught school in Calhoun County before moving to Cleveland, Ohio, where he retired from Cyril Bath Co. He then moved to Roseville where he resided until his death. Surviving are two daughters, Carol Atkinson of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Phyllis Seibert of Roseville; one brother, Steve Clayton of Port Charlotte, Fla.; one sister, Chlorene Bennett of Port Charlotte; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Mathers Clayton, in March 1991. Services were held at East Lawn Mortuary Chapel, with Rev. Scott Finner officiating. Burial was in East Lawn, Sierra Hills, Roseville.
