SMITH, CHARLEY MELL

Charley Mell Smith, 87, of Elizabethton, Tenn., died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 1994, after a long illness. He was the son of the late Floyd and Emma Moore Smith. He was a native of Calhoun and Gilmer counties and a member of Rush Run Baptist Church, near Grantsville. Surviving are two daughters, Kathleen Coleman of Seattle, Wash., and Lila Webb of Spencer; one brother, Hill Smith of Elba, Ohio; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Starcher Smith; a daughter, Guyla Fowler; two grandchildren; two sisters, Clara Stout and Hallie Carpenter; and two brothers, Arlen and Orval Smith. Services were held at Tetrich Funeral Home and burial was in Happy Valley Memorial Park, Elizabethton.

SMITH, CLAIR K.

Clair K. Smith, 84, of Elba, Ohio, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 1994, at Marietta Memorial Hospital. She was born in Henrietta, a daughter of the late Oak and Esther Waggoner Gainer. Her home had been in Calhoun County before she moved to Elba in 1950. She was a member of Elba Community Church. She enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, walking through the countryside, and telling stories to her grandchildren. Surviving are her husband, Hill Smith; two sons, David Smith of Elba and Gerald Smith of Macksburg; three daughters, Helen Stack of Elba, Jo Ann Cunningham of Marietta and Phyllis Mincks of Lowell; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; three great-great- grandchildren; two sisters, Louise Rusnak of Bloomingdale, Ohio, and Gladys Bower of Parkersburg; two brothers, George Gainer of Bloomingdale and Frank Gainer of Grantsville; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Herman Smith; two grandchildren; one brother; and two sisters, including Melba Dutch Barker in 1994. Services were held at McClure-Schafer Funeral Home, Marietta, with Rev. William Pickenpaugh officiating. Burial was in Lund cemetery, Macksburg.

SMITH, DELMAS H.

Delmas H. Smith, 63, of Big Bend, died Thursday, Oct. 6, 1994, at Louis A. Johnson Veteran's Administration Hospital, Clarksburg, after a brief illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Pearl Selmon Smith Richards of Big Bend and the late Glen Smith. He was a U.S. veteran of the Korean War and was a retired millwright at Amax, Inc. He was a member of Church of God, International. Surviving in addition to his mother are two daughters, Donna Ellen Davis of Charleston and Robin Crispin of Washington, Pa.; three sons, John D. Smith, Thomas E. Smith and Matthew S. Smith, all of Parkersburg; two sisters, Gladys Parker of Parkersburg and Sue Kimble Wayne of Steubenville, Ohio; and two grandchildren. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Broomstick cemetery. Memorials preferred to Broomstick cemetery Fund.

SMITH, HOLLY G.

Holly G. Smith, 91, of Elyria, Ohio, died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 1994. He was born in DeKalb District, Gilmer County, a son of the late Joshua and Samilda Kelly Smith. He lived in Elyria from 1932 to 1973, then moved to Apache Junction, Ariz. He returned to Elyria in 1993. He was a carpenter, a 50-year member of United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 212, Cleveland, Ohio. Surviving are his wife, Naomi; two daughters, Emma Gene Blythe of Redlands, Calif., and Wanda Binggeli of Omstead Township, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; four great-great- grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Burns of Grantsville. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie; one daughter; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; six brothers; and three sisters. Services were held at Dickens Funeral Home, Elyria, and burial was in Brookdale cemetery, Elyria.

SMITH, HOWARD E.

Howard E. Smith, 61, of Orma, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 1994, at Charleston Area Medical Center's Memorial Division after a brief illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late James H. and Mary Barr Smith. He was a farmer. Surviving are three sisters, Emma Brake of Cleveland, Jerl Smith of Spencer and Kathryn Hardman of Grantsville; two brothers, Roger W. Smith of Mt. Zion and Alvin D. Smith of Nebo; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating. Burial was in Reip cemetery, near Orma.

SMITH, RAYMOND C.

Raymond C. Smith, 84, of Akron, Ohio, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 1994, at his home after an extended illness. He was born in Calhoun County, and had lived in the Akron area since 1943. He retired from B.F. Goodrich in 1971. He was an avid bowler and fisherman. Surviving are his wife, Virginia; a son, Raymond Smith of Las Vegas, Nev.; four daughters, Jean Rittenour, Janice Aber and Nadine Kight, all of Akron, and Pauline Fiume of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; 20 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great- grandchild. Services were held at Hecker Funeral Home, Uniontown, Ohio.

SMITH, RUBY

Ruby Smith, 91, of Mt. Zion, died Sunday, March 13, 1994, at Calhoun General Hospital, after an extended illness. He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Amos and Frances Kerby Smith. He was retired from Consolidated Natural Gas Co. Surviving are his wife, Ona Roberts Smith; five daughters, Beulah Hayes of Phoenix, Ariz., Eula Allen of Clarington, Ohio, Betty Frame of Chandlersville, Ohio, Bonnie C. Bird of Grantsville and Freda Lakocy of Elyria, Ohio; four sons, Glendle Smith, of Clendenin, Donald Smith of Aurora, Colo., Dale Smith of Yonkers, N.Y., and Frank Smith of Massapequa, N.Y.; 57 grandchildren; 87 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Denzil and Aden Smith; four brothers; and five sisters. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Glendon McKee officiating. Burial was in Hur cemetery.

SNIDER, DONALD R.

Donald R. Snider, 76, of Jackson, Ohio, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 1994, at Medical Center Hospital, Chillicothe, Ohio. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late James and Esther Busch Snider. He was a retired employee of Goodyear Atomic and was a member of First Baptist Church at Jackson. Surviving are his wife, Letha Holpp Snider, two daughters, Norma Wevurski and Janet Swaim, both of Fairborn, Ohio; one brother, Robert Snider of Brohard; two sisters, Ruby Keller of Brohard and Luella Maze of Parkersburg; three granddaughters; two great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. Services were held at First Baptist Church, Jackson, with Rev. Fred Sparks officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.

SNIDER, JOHN H.

John H. Snider, 76, of Salem, formerly of Stumptown, died Monday, Oct. 17, 1994, at Louis A. Johnson Veterans Center, Clarksburg, after a brief illness. He was born on Birch Run, Doddridge County, a son of the late Albert and Lilly Stutler Snider. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Lavada E. Perine Snider of Salem; one daughter, Carolyn Strauss of Belpre; two sons, Leon Snider of Waverly, Ohio, and Larry Snider of Denton, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Wiladean Thomas of Salem; four stepsons, Junior Perine of Morgantown, William Nicholas, Arnet Lee Nicholas and Clavis Nicholas, all of Salem; two sisters, Norma Paul of Salem and Mary White of St. Marys; two brothers, Rev. Jennings Snider of Brookfield, Ohio, and William Snider of Savannah, Ga.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Adalene Suttle Snider; one son; and two brothers. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Edward Perine officiating, and burial to be in Collins-Community cemetery, Stumptown.

SNIDER, VERA E.

Vera E. Snider, 74, of Brohard, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 1994, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. She was born in Freed, a daughter of the late Mary Evelyn McCray. She was a homemaker and lived in the Brohard area all of her life. She was the oldest member of Strait Creek Baptist Church, Brohard, and was a member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 73 of Grantsville. Surviving are two daughters, Carol Kelley of Brohard and Karen Boles of St. Albans; one son, Joseph B. Snider of Mineral Wells; seven grandsons; one granddaughter; two great-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tony H. Snider. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. William P. Snider and Rev. Lewis Villers officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery, Brohard.

SORENSEN, HAROLD A.

Harold A. Sorensen, 64, of Arnoldsburg, died Monday, Nov. 14, 1994, at Americare-Arlington Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Parkersburg, after an extended illness. He was born in Providence, R.I., a son of the late Harold A. and Elsa Victoria Anderson Sorensen, Sr. He was a U. S. Air Force veteran and retired from Curtis Industries of Eastlake, Ohio, where he worked as a systems analyst and computer programmer. Surviving are his wife, Lorraine Flanders Sorensen; two daughters, Victoria Moroney of Euclid, Ohio and Denise Starcher of Arnoldsburg; one son, Anthony Sorensen of Eastlake; two sisters, Elsa Coski of Providence, R. I., and Dorothy Gangi of Streetsboro, Ohio; and three grandchildren. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Don Tranel officiating. Burial was in Grafton National cemetery, Grafton.

SPENCER, JAMES ALVA

James Alva Spencer, 80, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 1994, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Rev. Herbert and Roxie Lena Haverty Spencer. He was a graduate of Spencer High School, where he played four years on the football team. He was retired from DuPont after 33 years of service and was a beekeeper. He attended Grace Gospel Church. Surviving are one daughter, Jo Ann Wilson of Parkersburg; two brothers, Patrick S. Spencer of Parkersburg and Ira Spencer of Akron; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Ezra Spencer, Elber Spencer, Wilbur Spencer, Weldon Spencer, Charles Spencer, and Ray Spencer; and three sisters, Dola Petty, Arvilla McGlothlin, and Dessie Spencer. Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Bill Angel officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet cemetery.

STALLMAN, HOWARD W.

Howard W. Stallman, 81, of Elizabeth, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 1994, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Alfred Edgar and Leona Richards Stallman. He was a lifelong resident of Wirt County, and a United Methodist by faith. Surviving are three sisters, Lillian Stallman of Charleston, Maude Stallman of Elizabeth, and Gladys Cheuvront of Parkersburg; nine nieces; one nephew; and several great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Eula Garretson, in 1971; and one niece. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Busch Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with Rev. Michael E. Taylor and Rev. Gladson Grim officiating, and burial in Knights of Pythias cemetery, Elizabeth.

STALLMAN, MAUDE

Maude Stallman, 85, of Elizabeth, died Friday, Apr. 29, 1994, at Jackson General Hospital, Ripley, after an extended illness. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Alfred Edgar and Leona Richards Stallman. She worked at U.S. Quarry Tile Co., Parkersburg, for over 16 years. She was a longtime member of Elizabeth United Methodist Church and a lifelong resident of Wirt County. Surviving are two sisters, Lillian Stallman of Charleston and Gladys Cheuvront of Parkersburg; nine nieces; one nephew; and several great- nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Howard W. Stallman, in January; one sister, Eula Garretson, in 1971; and one niece. Services were held at Busch Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with Rev. Michael E. Taylor and Rev. Gladson Grim officiating. Burial was in Knights of Pythias cemetery, Elizabeth.
