FRENCH T. MOATS
KINGWOOD, W.Va. - French T. Moats, age 82, of Kingwood, formerly of Tunnelton, died Sunday, March 21, 1999, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.
The son of the late Oscar and Carrie White Moats, he was born Aug. 25, 1916, at Dryfork.
He was a Baptist by faith and was a retired coal miner.
He is survived by three sons, Clarence Moats, Terra Alta, French Moats Jr., Tunnelton, and Mark Moats, Tunnelton; and three daughters, Gertrude Miller, Tunnelton, Linda Paugh, Swanton, Md., and Patricia Miller, Tunnelton; 23 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosie Moats, in 1976; seven brothers; one daughter; one son; and two grandchildren.
Friends may call in the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and on Thursday, March 25, 1999, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Uphold officiating.
MARY ELLEN PAUGH
ELK GARDEN, W.Va. - Mary Ellen Paugh, age 81, of Elk Garden, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in the Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser, W.Va.
Born Aug. 15, 1917, in Elk Garden, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Charlotte (Oates) Blackburn. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Teddy Paugh; and one son, Charles.
Surviving are seven sons, Ronald, Donald, Herman, Norman, Roy, Kelvin and Randolph Paugh, all of Elk Garden; two daughters, Martha Haddix and Mary Jones, both of Elk Garden; two brothers, Howard Blackburn, Keyser, and Tommy Blackburn, Texas; 27 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, Md., on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Leslie Hipp officiating.
BETTY L. MITCHELL
KEYSER, W.Va. - Betty Louise Mitchell, 74, of Route 4, Keyser, died on Friday, March 26, 1999, at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born on Feb. 19, 1925, in Keyser, she was the daughter of the late James A. Porter Sr. and Louise J. (Gilpin) Porter. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Edward Porter; one sister, June Bowers; two infant sons; and one infant daughter.
Mrs. Mitchell was a homemaker and a Presbyterian by faith.
Surviving are two sons, Steve Mitchell, Flintstone, Md., and Andrew 'Mitch' Mitchell, Frostburg, Md.; four daughters, Patricia DeVault and husband, Bob, Pinto, Md., Polly Light, Cumberland, Md., Donna Mitchell, Keyser, and Rebecca Schmit and husband, Bryan, Keyser; two brothers, James A. Porter and Andrew T. Porter, Keyser; one sister, Evelyn M. Porter, Keyser; 16 grandchildren, Jim, Tom, Joe, John, Matthew, Tony, Timmy, Bernie, Richie, Josh, Bryan Jr., Mollie, Vicki, Sarah, Nicky and Candi; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Stephen P. Fritz officiating.
JOHN MARTIN II
KEYSER, W.Va. - John "Basil" Martin, II, 78, who was raised at 25 Orchard St., Keyser, died Sept. 30, in Doctors Hospital, Lanham, Md, of acute myleofibrosis.
Mr. Martin was born in Keyser, W.Va., he is the son of the late Hazel Spotts Martin and John Basil Martin.
He was a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel and industrial engineer.
After graduating from Keyser High School, he attended Potomac State College, earning an associates degree in Business Administration. He later studied at the Industrial Training Institute in Chicago, Ill., and the University of Maryland, College Park.
In Nov. 1941, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. After earning his commission, he was assigned to B-17 Bombers. He successfully completed 50 combat missions in the European Theatre. He served with distinction as First Pilot, Squadron Leader and Group Leader. He was discharged with the rank of Captain. He later served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel.
He was a member of the Mowatt Memorial Methodist Church, Greenbelt, Md, and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Moose Club. He was also a member of the Air Force Officers Association.
He was employed by several engineering firms in the Washington area, including The Engineering Research Corporation (ERCO), Airtronics Research, and Litton Industries. He retired from Litton Industries after 25 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Louise Clark Martin, of College Park; a son, John B. Martin, III, (Sandy), of Laurel; and a daughter, Gaylen Sue Barbour, of Lanham; grandchildren, Kelly and Ron Barbour, and Chris, Holly and Scott Martin; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends; his brother, Keith Martin, Keyser, as does his sister-in-law, Glen Dean Emery.
Interment will be in Arlington National cemetery, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m. with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to the Disabled American Veterans, 941 North Capital St., NE, Washington, D.C., 20090.
TREVOR G. MARTIN
FORT ASHBY, W.Va. - Trevor Glenn Martin, infant son of Edwin A. Martin and Jessica E. Newcomb, Fort Ashby, died at birth at Sacred Heart Hospital on Thursday, June 24, 1999.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his maternal grandfather, Richard Newcomb, Keyser; maternal grandmother, Juanita (Martin) Newcomb, Keyser; paternal grandparents, Clark and Carolyn (Ford) Martin, Wiley Ford; maternal great-grandmother, Elizabeth Martin, Keyser; and paternal great-grandmother, Marguerite Ford, Grafton. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
Graveside services will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 27, 1999, at the Mineral Baptist cemetery with Pastor Scott Uhlenhopp officiating.
The Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
LLOYD S. 'STEVE' POWELL
FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Lloyd Stevenson 'Steve' Powell, of Falling Waters, died on Sunday, March 21, 1999.
He was the son of Pauline Jenneva McKenzie Powell of Falling Waters and the late David Henry Powell.
He is survived by one brother, David Lee Powell, Frostburg, Md.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, Md.
Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
STANLEY J. MATHIAS
OLD FIELDS, W.Va. - Stanley Joseph Mathias, 85, of Old Fields, died Sept. 14, 1999, at the Heartland Nursing Home in Keyser.
Born in Hardy County on Oct. 15, 1913, he was the son of the late A.W. and Cora (May) Mathias.
Mr. Mathias was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Moorefield Presbyterian Church, Hardy County Farm Bureau Association and the Moorefield Moose Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Luella Harman Mathias in 1974; and two brothers.
Surviving are one daughter, Pat Grafton of Potomac, Md.; one son, Joe Mathias, Old Fields; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends may call anytime after noon on Thursday at the Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home in Moorefield. The family will receive friends there from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Moorefield Presbyterian Church with Bruce A. Macbeth officiating.
Burial will follow at the Olivet cemetery in Moorefield.
