BERTHA M. WHITEHURST
KEYSER, W.Va. - Bertha Mae Whitehurst, 81, of 348 S. Main St., Keyser, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born Oct. 4, 1917, at Chataugay, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late George and Annie (Sweet) Lett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Vera Rupert and Velma Klock.
Mrs. Whitehurst graduated from Ottawa Teachers College, Ottawa, Can., and received a degree from Newark State College, Newark, N.J. She taught school in Canada, North Carolina and in Piedmont, W.Va. She was a member of the Piedmont Pentecostal Holiness Church. She played the organ and piano, and taught Sunday School classes for many years in various churches where her husband pastored.
She is survived by her husband, the Rev. George Whitehurst; one son, David Whitehurst and wife, Nancy, Martinsburg; one daughter, Joy Ellifritz and husband, Jim, Keyser; and two grandchildren, Julie and David Whitehurst; and one brother, Harry Lett and wife, Marian, Ottawa.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, Md., on Saturday, Feb. 13, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be conducted at the Piedmont Pentecostal Holiness Church on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. George R. Loar, the Rev. Thomas Brackett, the Rev. Rodney Casteel, and the Rev. Earl Williams. Mrs. Whitehurst will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
BERT VANCE
KEYSER, W.Va. - Bert Vance, 77, of Keyser, died Sunday, April 11, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born July 13, 1921, in Pendleton County, he was the son of the late Jason and Emmatie (Long) Vance. He was also preceded in death by one son, Harold Gene Vance, who died April 27, 1993; and one sister, Marie Bradfield Smith.
Mr. Vance was manager of Pinto Orchards.
Surviving are his wife, R. Virginia (Champ) Vance; two sisters, Virgie Torkelson, Union Bridge, Md., and Lucy Vance, Harrisonburg, Va.; two brothers, Clyde Vance, Berryville, Va., and Harvey Vance, Harman, W.Va.; one grandson, Jason J. Vance, Columbia, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Paul Deitz officiating.
GOLDIE A. VANMETER
CARPENDALE, W.Va. - Goldie A. VanMeter, 82, formerly of Carpendale, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at the Cortand Acres Nursing Home, Thomas, W.Va.
Born May 23, 1917, in Bayard, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Hazel (Likens) Gaither. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Stanley M. VanMeter, in 1978; and one half-brother, Melvin McDonald.
Mrs. VanMeter was a member of the Ridgeley Senior Citizens.
Survivors include two sons, Robert M. VanMeter, Ridgeley, Darrell VanMeter, Cresaptown; one daughter, Sylvia McClellan, LaVale; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The funeral service will follow in the funeral home at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Edward R. Dickel, officiating.
ALICE J. VANNEST
KEYSER, W.Va. - Alice J. Vannest, 93, a resident of Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home and formerly of 500 Carskadon Lane, Keyser, died at the nursing home on Saturday, March 27, 1999.
Born on May 9, 1905, in Keyser, she was the daughter of the late James H. and Margaret (Tucker) Vernon. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William G. Vannest, on Sept. 30, 1984.
Mrs. Vannest was Manager and Telegraph Operator for the Western Union, Spencer, W.Va., and Bookkeeper for the Kincaid Wholesale Grocery, Spencer.
She attended Grace United Methodist Church, Keyser, was a former member of the Spencer Presbyterian Church, and a 70-year member and Past Worthy Matron of the Wetzel Chapter #27, Order of the Eastern Star, Spencer.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are several great-great-nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Sue Culbertson Jarrett officiating.
Alkire Chapter #10, Order of the Eastern Star, Keyser, will hold memorial services at the funeral home on Monday, March 29, 1999, at 7 p.m.
BARBARA E. VEACH
PETERSBURG, W.Va. - Barbara Eva Veach, 81, of Petersburg, died Thursday morning, Oct. 7, 1999, at the Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.
Born Sept. 14, 1918, in Mayen, Germany, she was the daughter of the late William and Eva Deitz.
Mrs. Veach was a member of the Petersburg Presbyterian Church and served as an elder. A retired Registered Nurse, she served as President of the Hospital Auxiliary and President of the Women's Auxiliary of the Potomac Valley Medical Society. She was President of the P.T.A. and was active in many civic and community concerns.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Lysle T. Veach; one daughter, Barbara Semerjiam and her husband, Evan, of Lincoln, Mass,; three sons, Trent Veach and wife, Kim, of Petersburg, W.Va.; John Veach and wife, Kathy, of Beverly, W.Va.; Greg Veach and wife, Ruth, of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; six granddaughters, Sarah Semerjian, Jessica Semerjian, Laura Semerjian, of Lincoln, Mass., and Whitney Veach, Sidney Veach, and Bailey Veach, of Petersburg, W.Va.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Donald Scofield and the Petersburg Presbyterian Church, on Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Grant Memorial Hospital, the American Lung Association, or the Petersburg Presbyterian Church.

BRADY SAMUEL 'JUNE' VETTER JR.
MOOREFIELD, W.Va. - Brady S. 'June' Vetter Jr., age 81, of Moorefield, passed away Wednesday night, Jan. 20, 1999, at the Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.
Born Feb. 6, 1917, at Mill Island near Moorefield, he was the son of the late Anna (Randolph) Vetter and Brady S. Vetter Sr. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by one brother, Randolph Vetter.
Mr. Vetter was a farmer, a West Virginia State Meat Inspector, and a Pioneer Corn Salesman. He was a member of the Moorefield Presbyterian Church and the Men's Bible Class, a Valley View Golf Association Charter Member, Club Champion for two years, and he played for Moorefield Independent Baseball Team in the 1930s, '40s and '50s.
Surviving are his wife, Zella (Halterman) Vetter; one daughter, Tamara G. Vetter, Gainesville, Va.; two sons, Brady S. Vetter III and wife, Nancy, and W. Moray Vetter and wife, Susan, all of Moorefield; one sister, Ruth V. Neff, South Fork, near Moorefield; and one brother, Charles H. Vetter, Moorefield; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Vetter, Joshua and Erin Bannister; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home with Bruce A. Macbeth officiating.
Burial will follow at the Olivet cemetery in Moorefield.
