HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Francis Joseph Cross, 71, of Shannondale, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.
Born April 8, 1928, in Westernport, Md., he was the son of the late Arthur W. and Josephine Cosgrove Cross.
He was a graduate of Eastern High School, received a bachelor's degree from Strayer College and a master's degree from George Washington University, all in Washington, D.C.
Before his retirement he had been auditor for the Prince George's County (Md.) school system. He previously was an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington for 29 years.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He received the Occupation Medal in Japan, among others.
He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Charles Town, W.Va., and a former member of St. Bernard's Parish in Riverdale, Md.
He was a member of Knights of Columbus; and Shannondale Club LTD in Harpers Ferry.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Roseanna L. Coy Cross; three daughters, Cynthia Ann Bartolomeo of Crownsville, Md., Anglea Marie Callas of Laurel, Md., and Bridget Erin Cross of Beltsville, Md.; a son, Joseph Leonard Cross of Beltsville; and four grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, 311 S. George St., Charles Town. The Rev. Brian Owens will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Peters Catholic cemetery, Harpers Ferry.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church.

Furn H. Zimmerman
BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - Furn H. Zimmerman, 79, of Bunker Hill, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Aug. 15, 1920, in Ringstown, Pa., he was the son of the late B.F. and Lulu Mae Faust Zimmerman.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Rosalie Rogers Zimmerman.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl Zimmerman of Bunker Hill; six stepchildren; a sister, Rhoda Emig of Pennsylvania; 13 stepgrandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.
Howard V. McDonald
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Howard Victor "Bucky" McDonald, 66, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at City Hospital.
Born April 25, 1933, in Berkeley County, he was the son of the late Howard Toup and Mildred Virginia McDonald.
He was a 1951 graduate of St. Joseph's' High School and a 1959 graduate of George Washington University, where he was a student athlete. He was chosen in the 1959 NBA draft by the New York Knickerbockers and was in the organization until 1962.
From 1963 to 1965, he owned Berkeley Lanes and from 1966 until 1970, he owned Chiave Club. He was most recently employed by Kitzie's Restaurant and Lounge Club. He was a long term thoroughbred horse racing owner.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1951 to 1954 in Germany.
He attended St. Joseph's' Catholic Church.
He is survived by one daughter, Tammy M. Leith of Atlanta, Ga.; one son, Anthony Victor McDonald of Atlanta; two sisters, Margaret Robison of Williamsport and Norma I. Manor of Martinsburg; four grandchildren and his companion, Sally Seeders of Martinsburg.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Henry I. McDonald.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be said Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Leo Catholic Church. The Rev. Brian Shoda will officiate. Burial and prayers will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens cemetery.
Military graveside services will be conducted by Newton D. Baker Post 896, Berkeley Post 14, American Legion and AMVETS Post 38.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Edna R.L. Tansill
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Edna R. L. Tansill, 73, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at City Hospital.
Born Feb. 10, 1926, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Clarence W. and Daisy Granigan Bartles.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Lee "Ed" Tansill Sr.
She was a member of Moler Avenue Church of the Brethren.
She was a member of Chapter 738, Women of the Moose, and Dodson Bowling Team.
She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Brown of Martinsburg; one son, Edward L. Tansill, Jr., of Martinsburg; one sister, Mary Jane Smallwood of Martinsburg; one brother, Clarence Bartles, of Martinsburg; four granddaughters; one grandson; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, John W. Tansill; four sisters, Virginia Myers, Phyllis Kennedy, Margaret Marshall and Ruby Belt; and two brothers, Robert Bartles and Pete Bartles.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. Jerry C. Mead will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Robert Tritapoe Jr.
HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Robert Tritapoe Jr., 77, of Hedgesville, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born May 16, 1922, in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Robert F. and Anna Marcaline Yost Tritapoe Sr.
He retired from the Finishing Department of Abex Corporation in Winchester, Va.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Violet Deloris Manning Tritapoe; a son, Robert Tritapoe III of Middletown, Md.; a stepson, Anthony Congo of Glen Gary, Md.; three sisters, Mary Cain, Agatha Ruppenthal and Betty Daily, all of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; a brother, Melvin Tritapoe of Berkeley Springs; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel Close, and three brothers, Foster Tritapoe, Daniel Tritapoe and Harold Tritapoe.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home in Berkeley Springs. Burial will be in Highland cemetery in Berkeley Springs.
Visitation will be Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Betty Lou M. Penwell
HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Betty Lou Mahoney Penwell, 53, of Harpers Ferry, died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at her home.
Born Feb. 24, 1946, in Jefferson County, she was the daughter of the late Margaret Virginia Mahoney.
She was a supervisor at Zerox Corporation.
She was a member of Mannings Assembly of God Church.
She is survived by her husband, Wayne Cleveland Penwell; a daughter, Patricia L. Penwell of Morgantown, W.Va.; a son, Dwayne Scott Penwell of Ranson, W.Va.; three sisters, Rebecca A. Ashby of Stephenson, Va., Barbara J. Popkins of Charles Town, W.Va., and Karen S. Burroughs of Winchester, Va.; three brothers, Robert A. Mahoney of Brunswick, Md., and George F. Mahoney and John W. Mahoney, both of Charles Town; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Wendell W. Mahoney.
Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Mannings Assembly of God Church in Harpers Ferry. The Rev. James Boyce will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens in Martinsburg, W.Va.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home in Ranson.
