Linda W. Rice

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Linda Watkins Rice, 66, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at her home.

Born Jan. 19, 1933, in Fairmont, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Margaret Lehman Watkins.

She was a graduate of Stephens College and Duke University.

She was a former school teacher at Carlynn Springs Elementary School in Arlington, Va.

She was a former "first lady" of Martinsburg; director of Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center; former director and founder of Boarman Arts Center; founding director of Contemporary American Theatre Festival; member of the Advisory Board of Shepherd College; first female Senior Warden of Trinity Episcopal Church; and a longtime member of Olde Berkeley Garden Club, from which she received many awards.

She is survived by her husband, Lacy I. Rice Jr.; a daughter, Anne W. Pierce of Walnut Creek, Calif.; two sons, Lacy I. Rice III of Bethesda, Md., and William Thorn Rice of Charleston, W.Va.; a sister, Sarah W. Point of Grossbottwar, Germany; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. The Rev. Jack T. Sutor Jr. will officiate.

Burial will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 W. King St., Martinsburg, WV 25402; Boarman Arts Center, 208 S. Queen St., Martinsburg, WV 25402; or Contemporary American Theatre Festival, Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, WV 25443.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

James F. Butts Jr.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - James Franklin Butts Jr., 58, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.

Born Jan. 7, 1941, in Winchester, Va., he was the son of James Franklin and Beulah Gantt Butts Sr. of Martinsburg.

He owned and operated Butts Contracting and Butts Mobile Home Park.

He was a member of House of the Lord and a member of its board.

He was a member of Martinsburg Lodge No. 120 Loyal Order of the Moose; Norwalk Antique Autos; and was a supporter of the Berkeley County Special Olympics.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Shirley Caplinger Butts; two daughters, Brenda L. Koontz and Theresa K. Butts, both of Martinsburg; two sons, Robert F. Butts and James K. Butts, both of Martinsburg; three sisters, Joyce Johnson, Brenda Elkins and Linda Dugan, all of Arden, W.Va.; a brother, Gary L. Butts of Glengary, W.Va.; two grandchildren; an aunt; nieces and nephews.

Service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at House of the Lord. The Revs. Robert F. Caplinger and Austin J. Caplinger will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg.

Memorial donations may be made to House of the Lord, 929 N. High St., Martinsburg, WV 25401.

Irving H. Tabler Sr.

GARNER, N.C. - Irving Hensell Tabler Sr., of 715 Thompson Road, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999.

Born in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late Carl Irving and Mary Blanche Hensell Tabler.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Tabler; two sons, Irving Hensell Tabler Jr. and Charles Leslie Tabler, both of Garner; three grandchildren, Kelsey Shannon Tabler, Michael Anthony Tabler and Kenneth Benjamin Tabler; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Tenna Tabler Weller.

Graveside services will be Friday at 2 p.m. in the Mausoleum Chapel at Montlawn Memorial Park.

John R. Miller Jr.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - John R. Miller Jr., 55, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at his home.

Born May 11, 1944, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of Doris Hill Milburn of Lexington Park, Md., and the late John R. Miller Sr.

He was a registered nurse, employed by Integrated Health Services of West Virginia in Charles Town, W.Va.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by two daughters, Lori Wienecke of Vancouver, Wash., and Kim Bushnell of Eureka, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Brandon Blevins, Sienna Wienecke, Brett Williams, Blake Williams, all of Vancouver, and Katherine Bushnell of Eureka.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. William C. Crowe will officiate.

Virgil L. Williams

KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - Virgil Leonard "Foots" Williams, 84, of Kearneysville, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.

Born July 28, 1915, in Kincaid, W.Va., he was the son of the late Emery and Blanche Pennington Williams.

He was a retired coal miner and later retired from the Maintenance Department of Arlington County Public Schools in Arlington, Va.

He was a member of Heritage Free Will Baptist Church in Inwood, W.Va.

He was a member of United Mine Workers of America.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, O. Marie Hood Williams; three daughters, Beverly J. Thomas of Gerrardstown, W.Va., Barbara C. Dean of Kearneysville and Rebecca L. Pyle of Sterling, Va.; two sons, Jerry F. Williams of Woodstock, Va., and Leonard E. Williams of Kearneysville; four sisters, Beatrice Propps of Richmond, Va., Ilene Echols of East Liverpool, Ohio, and Mae Sheppard and Marie Rogers, both of Beckley, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lorene Jones and Loretta Renick; and three brothers, Clarence, James and John L. Williams.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Heritage Free Will Baptist Church in Inwood. The Revs. Thomas Blake and Russell Wright will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery in Martinsburg, W.Va.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home in Ranson.

Memorial donations may be made to Heritage Free Will Baptist Church, P.O. Box 590, Inwood, WV 25428.

Josephine J. Thompson

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Josephine Jones Thompson, 89, of Charles Town, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at Hillcrest Manor in Kearneysville, W.Va.

Born March 10, 1910, in Charles Town, she was the daughter of the late Thomas M. and Rosa Josephine Johnston Jones.

Her husband, Wilmer Clayton "Shorty" Thompson, died in 1997.

She was a graduate of Charles Town High School.

She was employed by Old Charles Town Grain and Feed Co., Peoples Supply Inc., Moore Insurance Co. and James Senseney and Sons, all in Charles Town.

She was a member of Charles Town Presbyterian Church and the Sydnor Lewis Sunday School Class.

She is survived by two sons, Michael D. Thompson of Shepherdstown, W.Va., and Richard G. Thompson of Chicago; three grandsons, Jeffrey Thompson, Mark Thompson and John Thompson; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lorraine Jones Crowley and Eva Jones Biller; two brothers, Ernington Howard Jones and Raymond Allison Jones; and a granddaughter.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. The Rev. William Everhart will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery in Charles Town.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Charles Town Presbyterian Church, 220 E. Washington St., Charles Town, WV 25414.
