Okey B. Moore

Okey B. Moore, of Charleston, died July 14, 2000, in Meadowbrook Acres Nursing Center in Charleston following a long illness.

Mr. Moore was a graduate of Morris Harvey College and the Ritz Cosmetology College of New York. He was a national YMCA scuba and aquatics instructor and a Marine Corps and Navy veteran of World War II. He owned and operated Moore’s House of Beauty and Moore’s House of Scuba Diving and Compressed Air until his retirement. He was a member of Ruffner Memorial Presbyterian Church, a Mason, a member of Scottish Rite Bodies and York Rite Bodies, and Beni Kedem Shrine.

He was born August 16, 1913, at Stony Bottom, one of ten children of Eva Meeks and Ellis M. Moore.

Preceding him in death were his wife of many years, Bess W. Moore; three sisters, Mamie Moore, Geneva Moore, and Vera Andres; four brothers, Jesse Moore, Lloyd Moore, Dewey Moore, and Delbert Moore.

Surviving him are a sister, Kathryn Faudree, of Covington, Virginia; a brother, Floyd Moore, of Arcadia, Florida; two stepdaughters, Marshal Kerr Grandell, of California, and Stuart Ann Bentley, of Tennessee; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is an uncle of Bill and Maude Moore, of Stony Bottom.

His body was donated to the Human Gift Registry at West Virginia University. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Ruffner Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Memorial donations may be made to the Shriners’ Crippled Children’s Fund.

Goldie V. Rader

Goldie V. Rader, age 91, of Greenville, Pennsylvania , died Thursday, September 21, 2000, in the emergency room of UPMC Horizon Hospital at Greenville.

Mrs. Rader attended nursing school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , and was employed in many homes as a Practical Nurse in the Meadville, Pennsylvania , area for 20 years, retiring in 1983. She was a member of the Fellowship Methodist Church in Atlantic, Pennsylvania , and a member of Arbovale United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the U. S. Air Force Mothers and the Navy League of the United States.

Born at Bartow December 4, 1908, she was the daughter of Howard and Jennie Mullenax Phillips.

Her husband, Owen F. Rader, died March 12, 1992. They were married April 20, 1924. Also preceding her in death was an infant daughter, Bernell J. Rader, and two sons, Ralph and Howard Rader.

Surviving her are a son, Robert L. Rader, of Hadley, Pennsylvania ; four sisters, Edith Haddock, of Ashmore, Illinois, Lucy Schrader and Betty Wildman, both of Mattoon, Illinois, and Marry Conley, of Charleston, Illinois; two brothers, Harmon Phillips, of Romeoville, Illinois, and Paul Phillips, of Charleston, Illinois; eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Arbovale United Methodist Church by the Rev. David Rittenhouse. Burial was in the Arbovale Cemetery.

Betty Margaret Lightner

Betty Margaret Lightner, age 74, of Lewisburg, died Thursday, September 7, 2000, at home, following a short illness.

Mrs. Lightner was born June 24, 1926, in Seebert, the daughter of the late Loche Andrew Livesay, and Lakie Pearl Hill.

She was a former teacher in White Sulphur Elementary School and retired as office manager from Guy L. Simpson, Inc., of Merrifield, Virginia.

She was a former member of the Rehoboth Art League in Delaware and an accomplished clay potter; she was an active member of the West Virginia Archaeological Society, the Volunteer State Archaeological Society, Texas Archaeological Society, Texas Rock Art Foundation, Texas Amateur Archaeological Society, and the American Society for Amateur Archaeologists.

Surviving her are her husband, Eddie Lightner, of Lewisburg; daughters, Lysanne Taylor and Lynne Hash, both of Gap Mills, and Sherrie Fisher, of Wilmington, Delaware; a son, Jimmy Lightner, of Consohoken, Pennsylvania ; two brothers, James A. Livesay, of Richmond, Virginia, and Dale H. Livesay, of Williamsburg, Virginia; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p. m. Saturday, October 7, at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg by the Rev. Charles Miller.

Bernice E. Hummel
and
Ruth E. Sutton

Bernice E. Hummel, age 82, of South Point, Ohio, died Monday, September 4, 2000, in the Heartland Nursing Home in Ohio.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Hummel, and a daughter, Sara Hummel.

Her only surviving sister, Ruth E. Sutton, age 92, also died September 25, 2000, in Anchorage, Alaska.

Bernice and Ruth were born on Back Allegheny near Cass, the daughters of Nannie G. and Winters W. Sutton.

Bernice was a retired nurse from St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington, and Ruth was a well known business woman in Anchorage.

Memorial services were held for Bernice in Ohio and Ruth in Alaska.

Gray Grimes Hiner

Gray Grimes Hiner, age 94, of Dunmore, died Friday, October 6, 2000, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital. She was a resident of Pocahontas Center.

Mrs. Hiner was a retired Postmaster of Dunmore. She was a member of Dunmore United Methodist Church.

The daughter of the late Henry Hayes Grimes and Ada Virginia Grimes, she was born at Dunmore January 1, 1906.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Robert M. Hiner; a daughter, Roberta Jane Seagrove; her parents; a brother, David H. Grimes; and four sisters, Ruth Turner, Emma Brown, Pocahontas Waugh, and Carrie Grimes.

Surviving her are a daughter, Ida H. Pritchard, of Marlinton, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Dunmore United Methodist Church by the Rev. Scott Ingleton. Burial was in the Dunmore Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to Dunmore United Methodist Church.

Anna Jane Phillips

Anna Jane Phillips, age 62, of Campbelltown, Marlinton, died at the University of Virginia Medical Center at Charlottesville, Virginia, on October 6, 2000.

A native of Leon, she was born October 27, 1937, the daughter of the late Emmett and Geneve Snyder.

She was a Baptist.

Surviving her are her husband, Jackie B. Phillips; a son, Joe Don Phillips, of Walton; three sisters, Kay Brent, Spencer, Nancy Webb, Gandeeville, and Barbara Schoen, of Wichita Falls, Texas ; two brothers, Charles Snyder, of Spencer, and John Snyder, of Gandeeville; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Sunday, October 8, in the Cochran Cemetery by Fred Patrick.

Luther James Bright

Luther James Bright, age 86, of Marlinton, died Thursday, October 5, 2000, at Pocahontas Center, Marlinton.

Mr. Bright was a retired carpenter and a World War II Army veteran.

He was born near Marlinton June 25, 1914, the son of the late Harvey K. and Lena Virgie Sharp Bright.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were three sisters, Lucille Simmons, Levva McMillan, and Mary Rose, and a brother, Ted Bright.

Survivors include four sisters, Nellie Dean and Ruth Friel, Marlinton, Jean Whitmire, of Trenton, New Jersey, and Betty Baker, of Jacksonville, Florida.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at VanReenen Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jerry Moore. Burial was in the Sharp Cemetery on Jericho Road.

Virginia Lee Garten

Virginia Lee Liptrap Garten, age 72, of Hopewell, Virginia, died October 4, 2000, at John Randolph Hospital in Hopewell, Virginia, after a short illness.

She was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Almeda B. Liptrap, of Marlinton.

Also preceding her in death was a sister, Betty Long, of Ohio. Mrs. Garten is survived by her husband, Eddie Garten, formerly of Marlinton; a son, Clifford Garten, of Hopewell, Virginia; a daughter, Terri McHale, of Hopewell; four grandchildren, and a brother, Wayne Liptrap, of Marlinton.

Services were held at J. T. Morris Funeral Home in Hopewell on Saturday, October 7.

Dorothy L. Davis

Dorothy Lucella Davis, 70, of Marion, North Carolina, died October 6, 2000, at the Autumn Care Nursing Home.

Born in Marlinton, she was the daughter of Dasie Hammons Buzzard, of Marlinton, and the late Edwin Buzzard.

Mrs. Davis was retired from a home health care agency and active in community affairs.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include two sons, Denver Davis, Jr., of Nebo, North Carolina, and Ricky Davis, of Marlinton; three daughters, Pamela Davis, Donna Yates, and Linda Greene, all of Marion; a brother, Leo Buzzard, of Marlinton; a sister, Edith Parker, of Huntersville; five grandchildren; and one great-grand-child.

She was preceded in death by her father and two brothers, Robert and Frank.

A funeral was held on Sunday at the New Manna Baptist Church in Marion with the Rev. Bruce Ward officiating. A graveside service was held on Tuesday at the Huntersville Cemetery with Denver Davis, Jr., officiating.

Guy A. Bennett

Guy Anderson, Bennett, 73, of Marlinton, died Monday, December 4, 2000, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.

He was born on March 5, 1927, at Woodrow, the son of Eary James Bennett and Mattie Jackson Bennett.

Mr. Bennett was a logger and employee of Beckwith Lumber Company.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Mace Bennett; six sons, Randy D. Bennett, Eddie D. Bennett, John K. Bennett, Steven K. Bennett, all of Marlinton, Mark D. Bennett, of Franklin, and Kevin L. Bennett, of Roanoke, Virginia; eight daughters, Inez Bennett, Kimberly Finley, Karen Dee Bennett, all of Marlinton, Avis Seldomridge, of Cass, Yvetta Bennett, of Belpre, Ohio, Lucinda Foe, of Cass, Amber Waybright, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and Christy Clendenen, of Indiana; five brothers, Robert Bennett, Stanley Bennett, both of Slaty Fork, Keith Bennett, George Bennett, both of Valley Head, and Glade Bennett, of Dunmore; one sister, Edna Arbogast, of Valley Head; 33 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Ruth Biggs and Agnes Trainer.

Friends may visit at VanReenenFuneral Home on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. The funeral will be held on Thursday at the funeral home at 1 p.m with the Rev. Julian Rittenhouse officiating. Burial will follow at the Cochran Cemetery.
