Clarence A. Rice

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Clarence Arthur Rice, 81, of Martinsburg died Sunday, May 23, 1999, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born June 19, 1917, in Lancaster County, Pa., he was the son of the late William Harrison and Sadie M. Shaffer Rice.

He was a cloth cutter..

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving with the First Army during World War II. He received the Bronze Star. He also was awarded the French Croix de Guence.

He was a member of Bethel Pentecostal Church.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Foltz Rice of Reeder's Memorial Home, Boonsboro; one step-daughter, Kay Margaret DeHaven of Annandale, Va.; one step-son, Harry C. VanMetre of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; one sister, Ruth Wagner of Hershey, Pa.; nine step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Rice.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. Keith G. Edwards and the Rev. Arnold Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery. Military graveside services will be conducted by Newton D. Baker Post 896, V.F.W. and Berkeley Post 14, American Legion.

Robert L. Triggs

BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - Robert Lee Triggs, 68, of Bunker Hill, died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at City Hospital.

Born Nov. 2, 1930, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son the late James W. and Sarah Elizabeth Barnes Triggs.

He was a lifelong member of Paynes Chapel United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Ridgeway Ruritan Club, past president of the PTA at Bunker Hill Grade School and a member of Martinsburg Lodge 120 Loyal Order of Moose.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Margaret Ann Triggs; one daughter, Cathy Lynn Johnson of Bunker Hill; one son, James R. Triggs of Inwood, W.Va.; three grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Pearl T. Shirley, Mildred Eugenia Triggs and Jean Bradley Triggs and two brothers, James Shirley Triggs and Nathan Burrel Triggs.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, W.Va. The Rev. Khrista Fergueson will officiate. Burial will be in Bunker Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Iola M. MacArthur

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Iola M. MacArthur, 75, of Highview Farms, Hedgesville, died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at her home.

Born April 3, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Orland and Goldie LaMar Watson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ensley O. MacArthur.

She was a member of Hedges Chapel, where she served as church secretary/treasurer for 15 years.

She was also secretary/treasurer for Highview Farm's Citizens Association.

She is survived by one daughter, Connie O'Leary of Gaithersburg, Md.; one son, Richard MacArthur of Maryland; two sisters, Willa McClellan of Missouri and Mary Miller of Florida; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Dedra Carol MacArthur.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Hedges Chapel. The Rev. Sam Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Hedges Chapel, P.O. Box 5031, Woods Resort, Hedgesville, WV 25427.

Ward O. Shanholtz

INWOOD, W.Va. - Ward Otis Shanholtz, 85, of Inwood, died Friday, May 21, 1999, at Beasley Knoll, Bunker Hill, W.Va.

Born Feb. 7, 1914, in Hampshire County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Wilbur S. and Nettie M. Hott Shanholtz.

He was retired from Capitol Cement after 48 years.

He was a member of the U.S. Army and served with the 9th Armored Division in the European Theater. He fought in the Battle of The Bulge.

He is survived by his wife, Rhoda White Shanholtz of Greenich Nursing Home, Bunker Hill; two sisters, Goldie Smith of Romney, W.Va. and Clara Shanholtz of Hagerstown; two brothers, Wilbur Shanholtz of Martinsburg, W.Va. and James Shanholtz of Virginia; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ella Ruble Shanholtz; six sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, W.Va. The Rev. Raymond Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Alfred L. Place

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Alfred Lewis Place, 62, of Winchester Grade Road, died Friday, May 21, 1999, at his home.

Born Feb. 20, 1937, in Town of Northeast, Duchess County, N.Y., he was the son of Zenneda Barber Place of Amenia, N.Y. and the late Alfred Place.

He was a 1955 graduate of Pine Plains High School, Pine Plains, N.Y.; and attended Community College at Pawling, N.Y.

He worked as a master metal technician with White Post Restorations in White Post, Va.

He served in the U.S. Army during the late 1950s and was stationed in Korea.

He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Berkeley Springs.

He was a member of Risinger-Stotler VFW Post No. 4019 in Berkeley Springs.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Margaret Julia Nelson Place; a daughter, Alison Ebert of New Bern, N.C.; four sons, Donald G. Place of Peekskill, N.Y., Gregory Place of Valatie, N.Y., Jon A. Erickson of Scituate, Mass. and Karl E. Erickson of East Nassau, N.Y.; two sisters, Barbara Storms of Petersburg, N.Y. and Shirley Hines of Baltimore; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be offered Monday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 401 S. Washington St., Berkeley Springs, W.Va. The Rev. Stephen J. Cuff will officiate. Burial will be in Amenia.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs, where a prayer service will be conducted at 8:45 p.m. by Tri-State Honor Guard. The funeral home will be open today from noon to 9 p.m. for the convenience of friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church Building and Memorial Fund, 401 S. Washington St., Berkeley Springs, WV 25411.

Marian E. Shochet

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Marian Elizabeth Graaf Shochet, 80, of Tuscawilla Hills, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, at the home of her daughter.

Born June 2, 1918, in Lehighton, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Willis and Lottie Mae Leininger Graaf.

She was a graduate of Penn State University in State College, Pa.; and received her master's degree in Psychology from American University in Washington D.C.

She retired as an administrative officer with Lutheran Social Services in Washington D.C.

She served in the U.S. Army Corp., during World War II.

She was a member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Charles Town, where she was a member of Trinity Circle Women.

She was a member of the Board of Trustees Lutheran Home in Rockville, Md.; a member of Golden Corral Ladies League in Charles Town; Golden Corral Senior Citizens League in Charles Town; Charles Town Bridge Club; and Penn State Alumni Association.

She is survived by her husband of 52 and a half years, Albert Irvin Shochet; a daughter, Joann Shochet Perkins of Charles Town; a son, Albert I. Shochet Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va.; three sisters, Pauline Graaf and Vivian Holland, both of Lehighton and Joan Gavin of Venice, Fla.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 119 S. Seminary St., Charles Town. The Rev. Richard E. Neal will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends Tuesday one hour before the services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 119 S. Seminary St., Charles Town, WV 25414; Jefferson Memorial Hospital, 300 S. Preston St., Ranson, WV 25438; or Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, WV 25401.

Arrangements are by Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town.
