Emma D. Watson

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Emma Dick Watson, 82, of Charles Town, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Canterbury of Shepherdstown in Shepherdstown, W.Va.

Born May 27, 1916, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Oscar M. and Mary May Files Dick.

Her husband, James "Jim" Ernest Watson Jr., died in 1994.

She was a graduate of Martinsburg (W.Va.) High School, and Shepherd College in Shepherdstown.

She was past member and president of Charles Town Women's Club, and was Eastern District president of the General Federation of Womens Clubs of West Virginia. She was a past member of Jefferson County and West Virginia Retired Teachers Associations, and a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 128 in Charles Town.

She retired after 40 years as a school teacher in Jefferson and Hampshire counties, W.Va. She was a licensed West Virginia real estate agent.

She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Charles Town, taught Sunday school and directed the children's choir.

She is survived by two daughters, Sarah A. Ware of Kearneysville, W.Va., and Mary E. Miller of Charles Town; one son, James E. Watson III of Charles Town; one sister, Mary Whitacre of Whitacre, Va.; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Spitzer and Mildred Burkhart; and a brother, Oscar M. Dick Jr.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 110 W. North St., Charles Town. The Rev. James Chambly will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town.

Friends will be received at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Jimmy Peters Fund, c/o Asbury United Methodist Church, 110 W. North St., Charles Town, WV 25414.

George W. Mason

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - George Walter "Walt" Mason, 61, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at his home.

Born Jan. 2, 1938, in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of Leona Ellen Fox Mason Carbaugh of Hedgesville, W.Va., and the late George T. Mason.

He attended Cherry Run School in Morgan County; and Berkeley Springs High School.

He installed electronic and computer cables in computer labs on the West Coast. He then operated Walt's Mechanic Shop and worked as a mechanic at Roy's Service Centerm both in Berkeley Springs. He worked as a guard at Morgan County Jail; and then at Cacapon State Park from 1987 until retiring in 1997.

He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserves and U.S. Coast Guard. He received the Good Conduct Medal. He served in the Army National Guard in Winchester, Va.

He was a Protestant.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 19 years, Lola Margaretta Hovermale Weber Mason; a daughter, Sharon Newman of Tucson, Ariz.; a son, George W. Mason II of Madison, Wis.; five stepdaughters, Christine Farris of Great Cacapon, W.Va., Cindy Holliday of Hedgesville, Jo Ann Keefer, Linda Drury and Iris Jean Davison, all of Berkeley Springs; three sisters, Wanda Murray of Hedgesville, Linda Van Metre and Leeanna McCullough, both of Martinsburg; a brother, Kenny Mason of Hedgesville; two grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Ken Dyar will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery in Morgan County.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from 10 a.m.

Edward L. Snyder

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Edward Lee Snyder, 85, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at his home.

Born July 29, 1913, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Abraham Emanuel Snyder and Fannie May Whittington.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Unger Snyder.

He retired from Dixie Narco.

He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.

He is survived by four daughters, Dolores Smith of Cross Junction, Va., Shirley Butler of Bunker Hill, W.Va., Carolyn Woodward of Martinsburg and Barbara Woods of Gerrardstown, W.Va.; one son, Edward Lee Snyder Jr. of Treasure Island, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, and a nephew, Junior Lee Snyder, who helped care for him.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Isabelle Britt; and a grandson.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. John R. Yost will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Clarence E. Michehl

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Clarence Edward Michehl, 81, of Charles Town, died Saturday, March 6, 1999, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born June 11, 1917, in Wesleyville, Pa., he was the son of the late Fredrick Nelson and Ruth Michehl.

He owned and operated an aircraft salvage company for more than 45 years.

He was a 33-year veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, U.S. Air Force, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was a Royal Air Force exchange pilot during World War II and escorted the 92nd Bomber Group to England. He was the recipient of the British Distinguished Flying Cross for the Battle of Britain.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Lee Michehl; one daughter, Lee Michehl of Frederick, Md.; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service with military honors will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in Arlington National cemetery.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Bessie V. McCoy

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Bessie Velma McCoy, 88, of Berkeley Springs, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Valley View Nursing Home in Berkeley Springs.

Born Aug. 5, 1910, in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Thomas C. and Nannie Jane Hovermale Michael.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Pierpont McCoy, in 1984.

She attended Mount Wesley School in Berkeley Springs.

She worked in local canneries, was a wallpaper hanger and as a housekeeper. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church and taught the Beginners' Sunday School class.

She is survived by one daughter, Janice VanGosen-Sykes of Berkeley Springs; two granddaughters, Lorraine VanGosen and Sarita Bowers, both of Berkeley Springs; one great-granddaughter; two stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Cecelia Hovermale, Deloris Weber, Viola Hovermale and Elsie Unger; and one brother, Marshall Michael.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Revs. Hennis H. Fox and Mary Gebe Stevens will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

The family will receive friends Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from 10 a.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Mount Pleasant cemetery Fund, in care of Charles R. Michael, 354 Henry Michael Road, Berkeley Springs, WV 25411.

John P. Easterday

RIPPON, W.Va. - John Paul "Pete" Easterday, 80, of Rippon, died Monday, April 19, 1999, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born in 1919 in Charles Town, W.Va., he was the son of the late Paul B. and Naomia McDonald Easterday.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Virginia "Baby" Hough Easterday.

He attended Jefferson County schools.

He worked for the past 20 years for Mrs. Ora Cooper, at Rion Hall Farm, Charles Town. He had been a painter employed by the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Charles Town.

He was a member of Jackson-Perks American Legion Post 71, Charles Town, VFW Memorial Post 3522, Charles Town, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 948, all of Charles Town; and Brunswick (Md.) Eagles Club.

He is survived by a sister, Louise Hood of Venice, Fla.; three brothers, Donald Easterday of Cedar Grove, W.Va., Kenneth Easterday of Lacey, Wash., and Douglas Easterday of St. Louis; nieces and nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Rev. John Alfriend will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
