Charles V. Masters

INWOOD, W.Va. - Charles Vernon Masters, 81, of Inwood, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at his home.

Born Jan. 3, 1918, in Darkesville, W.Va., he was the son of the late John T. and Ella May Parkinson Masters.

He retired from Potomac Construction Asphalt Plant.

He was a member of Cedar Grove Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda May Keller Masters; four sons, Gary G. Masters of Falls Church, Va., Jerry Wayne Masters of Capon Bridge, W.Va., Vernon Eugene Masters and John R. Masters, both of Inwood; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Pence; and two brothers, John D. Masters and Harry A. Masters.

Services will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. Burial will be in Paynes Chapel cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Woodrow W. Rutherford

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Rutherford, 79, of Leetown Road, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Nov. 1, 1919, in Front Royal, Va., he was the son of the late Henry and Susie Costello Rutherford.

He retired from B&O Railroad.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, with the 51st Squadron Air Force. He received the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, among others.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He assisted his wife for 43 years with the operation of the Jefferson County Animal Welfare Home.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy P. Porter Rutherford; a stepson, William Pringle of Bridgeport, W.Va.; a foster son, Carl Taylor and his daughter, Lindsay, at home; three sisters, Pauline Jett and Mae McDonald, both of Baltimore, and Elizabeth Loudenslager of Westminster, Md.; four stepgrandchildren; six nieces and five nephews.

He was preceded in death by a stepson, Charles F. Pringle; a sister, Ethel Smallwood; and two brothers, James H. Rutherford and Earl Rutherford.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Rev. Russell Wright will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Independent Fire Co., P.O. Box 925, Charles Town, WV 25414; or to a charity of choice.

Mable L. Hammond

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Mable Lee Hammond, 86, of Billmyer Road, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Aug. 2, 1912, in Jefferson County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Rowland A. and Mable Lee Miller Hammond.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church, and Women of the Church.

She is survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Anna Ruth Watson, Emma Hammond, Edith Hammond, Mary Baker Hammond and Hester Hammond; and three brothers, Thomas Hammond, Harry Hammond and Edgar Hammond.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, W.Va. The Rev. Randall Tremba will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Shepherdstown Fire Department, P.O. Box F, Shepherdstown, WV 25443.

Flora M. Fox

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Flora Mae Fox, 97, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, at her home.

Born Oct. 22, 1901, in Ungers Store, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James and Katherine Hobday Bishop.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thurman Unger; her second husband, Ellis Randall; and her third husband, Hiram Fox.

She attended Posey Hollow School near Stotlers Crossroads, W.Va.

She worked as a cook at Hotel Washington during the 1940s; ran her own restaurant, Mom's Restaurant, during the late 1950s; and then ran Flora's Restaurant in the 1960s. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs, and a member of Ladies Aid Society.

She was a former member of Morgan County Rescue Service Auxiliary.

She worked at local canneries and hung wallpaper.

She is survived by two daughters, Lottie V. Compton and Katheryn L. Willard, both of Berkeley Springs; two sons, James L. Unger of Lincoln, Neb., and Woodrow M. Unger of Manassas, Va.; three stepsons, Paul Fox of Moorefield, W.Va., Lee Fox and Oscar Fox, both of Berkeley Springs; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Virgie Waugh; two brothers, Harry Bishop and Vernon Bishop; two great-grandsons; and a great-great-grandson.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Revs. Henry L. Fisher and Wayne Frum will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Church cemetery, Morgan County, W.Va.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from 10 a.m.

George E. Apple

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - George E. Apple, 69, of Wilkes Street, Berkeley Springs, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at his home.

Born Feb. 18, 1930, in Hancock, W.Va., he was the son of the late George R. and Bessie Plotner Apple.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sumiko Furukawa.

He was employed by Kirk Ford Sales Inc., in Hancock, Md.

He retired from the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean and Vietnam wars.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by a brother, Carl Apple of Middleburg, Fla.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis Apple.

Services will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no visitation. The family requests the omission of flowers.

Arrangements are by Grove Funeral Home, Hancock.

Anna M. Orr

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Anna Mary Orr, 78, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.

Born July 19, 1920, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late George and Georgie Williams.

She was a member of Full Gospel Pentecostal Church at Four Mile Woods, W.Va.

She is survived by two daughters, Violet K. Brannon of McLain, Miss., and Juanita Nally of Hedgesville, W.Va.; three sons, William Albert Orr of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Abiga Allen Orr Sr. and Paul R. Orr, both of Martinsburg; a sister, Dorothy Miller of Martinsburg; a brother, Sam Twyman of Melbourne, Fla.; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Williams; and two grandchildren, Tina Marie Orr and Bruce Allen Orr.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Full Gospel Pentecostal Church at Four Mile Woods. The Rev. Raymond E. Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Butlers Chapel cemetery west of Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
