Dorothy M. Butts

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Dorothy Margaret Butts, 65, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Maria Schmidt Ellis.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was a member of Catholic Daughters.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, John R. Butts; a son, David R. Butts of Berkeley County, W.Va.; a daughter, Mary "Edie" Silver of Inwood, W.Va.; two brothers, John Ellis of Annapolis and Joseph Ellis of Baltimore; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Isenrowe.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel. The Rev. John V. DiBacco Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m.

Robert M. Lewis

GERRARDSTOWN, W.Va. - Robert M. "Bob" Lewis, 69, of Gerrardstown, died Friday, July 17, 1998, at Fairfax Hospital in Virginia.

Born May 3, 1929, in Winchester, Va., he was the son of the late Elmer and Julia Henry Lewis.

For 20 years, he served with the Arlington Police Department; and the last seven years he specialized as a firearms instructor.

He served four years with the U.S. Navy.

He was a Methodist.

He was a member of Arlington County Police Association.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Haines Lewis; two sons, Greg Lewis of Falls Church, Va., and Glen Lewis of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; a brother, Bill Lewis of Arlington, Va.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Denny Lewis.

Services will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, W.Va. The Rev. Daniel Montague will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery with military graveside services conducted by Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW; and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ernest W. Hendricks Jr.

LEETOWN, W.Va. - Ernest "Ernie" William Hendricks Jr., 75, of Leetown, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Washington, D.C.

Born Feb. 18, 1923, on Spring Hill Farm in Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., he was the son of the late Ernest W. Hendricks Sr. and Martha Rosalind Mohler Hendricks.

He was a 1941 graduate of Shepherdstown High School and attended Roanoke College, Roanoke, Va.

He retired as a computer technician after 30 years of service in the Automatic Data Processing Division at Fort Ritchie. While there, he received the outstanding performance award.

He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he received the Purple Heart, three Bronze Stars, American Theatre Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal.

He was a Baptist.

He was a member of Henry Kyd Douglas Camp Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was an avid supporter of Shepherd College basketball team.

He is survived by his wife, Ella C. Sisk Hendricks, whom he married Dec. 24, 1955; two daughters, Teresa H. Jenkins of Leetown and Kristi D. Hendricks of Fairfax, Va.; a son, Jeffrey L. Hendricks of Leetown; a brother, John E. Hendricks of Shenandoah Junction; and three grandchildren.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Rev. Dennis Campbell will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens cemetery, Martinsburg, W.Va.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Anthony M. Cooper

LEETOWN, W.Va. - Anthony "Tony" Marshall Cooper, 52, of Leetown, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

Born May 30, 1946, in Henderson, N.C., he was the son of Hazel Smith Mustin of Chesapeake, Va., and the late Benjamin Cooper.

He was a graduate of Federal Aviation Administration Academy, Naval Shipyard School.

He was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration, Leesburg, Va., as an air traffic controller. He also was a master electrician.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal, two Overseas Service Bars, Sharpshooter Badge and Combat Infantryman's Badge.

He was a Baptist.

He was a member of West Virginia Electrical Contractors Association; and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 948, Charles Town, W.Va.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 14 years, Barbara A. Virgilio Cooper; his stepfather, John Mustin of Chesapeake; two children, Carol Owens of Reston, Va., and Nicholas Cooper of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three stepchildren, Audrey Anne Strader of Paris, Stephanie Strader of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Laura Lynn Viands of Leetown; two sisters, Loretta Shires and Patricia Jernigan, both of Chesapeake; a brother, Jerry Cooper of Calico Rock, Ark.; and two stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Bennie Lee Ashley.

A memorial service will be Saturday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. Jerry Cooper will officiate. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends Saturday one hour prior to services.

Memorial donations may be made to Jefferson County Cancer Society, P.O. Box 40, Ranson, W.Va. 25438.

Charlotte E. Hoffmaster

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Charlotte Elizabeth Hoffmaster, 76, of Charles Town, died Thursday, July 23, 1998, at Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Born Feb. 3, 1922, in Bakerton, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late George Washington and Elsie Ruth Knight Bond.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Raymond Hoffmaster.

She was retired from C.H. Musselman Co.

She was a member of the Church of God, Bakerton.

She is survived by a daughter, Judy I. Hawkins of Calverton, Va.; a son, Larry Raymond Hoffmaster of Kearneysville, W.Va.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Stella Hammond.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, 114 N. Mildred St., Ranson, W.Va. The Rev. B.G. Turner will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Anna L. Grove

INWOOD, W.Va. - Anna Lee Grove, 69, of Inwood, died Thursday, July 23, 1998, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.

She was the daughter of the late Rufus and Merkie Cheek.

She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church.

She was a member of Fleet Reserve Association Auxiliary and Ladies of the Moose.

She had previously worked at Corning as a finisher.

She is survived by her husband, Paul E. Grove; a son, Nelson R. Grove of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; two sisters, Lela Allen of El Cerrito, Calif., and Linda Stiles of Michigan; two granddaughters; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Paul Lee Grove; a sister, Lola Nichols; and a brother, Junior Cheek.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Albert Clipp will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lena A. Slonaker

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Lena Abshire Slonaker, 92, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at Canterbury Nursing Home, Shepherdstown, W.Va.

Born April 19, 1906, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Robert M. and Ella May Miller Abshire.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert G. Slonaker.

She was a member of Tuscarora Presbyterian Church.

She was a member of Inwood, Tuscarora and Gerrardstown Homemakers Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Neva Richardson of Martinsburg and Isabelle Fultz of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; a son, Hubert J. "H.J." Slonaker of Inwood, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren, including Ronald L. Slonaker, whom she raised; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by eight brothers, William, Edgar, Carl, Harry, Ernest, Roy, Lester and Melvin Abshire; a granddaughter, Karen Orsini; and a great-grandson, Michael Andrew Slonaker.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Paul Stanley will officiate. Burial will be in Tuscarora cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Owen W. Conklyn

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Owen Webster Conklyn, 91, of Charles Town, died Thursday, July 23, 1998, at Integrated Health Services of West Virginia.

Born Nov. 24, 1906, in Charles Town, he was the son of the late Gerald F. and Willye Ramey Conklyn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Watson Conklyn, in 1989.

He was a graduate of Charles Town High School.

He retired in 1970 from the A&P food store, Charles Town.

He was a member of Charles Town Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and trustee. He also was a life member of Yoke Fellows Bible class in the church.

He was a member of Henry Kyd Douglas Camp Sons of Confederate Veterans; Malta Masonic Lodge 80 AF&AM, Charles Town; and Knights Templar.

He is survived by a foster daughter, Betty Dillow Fellers of Charles Town; five foster grandchildren, Elizabeth N. Bartmess, Donald Fellers Jr., Teresa J. Shelton, Edward D. Trout and Cynthia A. Evey; five great-grandchildren; and a nephew, William Marlow.

He was preceded in death by a foster daughter, Beulah D. Trout, in 1985; a sister, Anna C. Marlow; and a brother, Charles Francis Conklyn.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Charles Town Presbyterian Church. The Rev. William Everhart will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town.
