JOSEPH H. WATT
1905 - 2002

Joe Watt wore many hats. Of course, the rancher and cowboy stetson was the one most people saw him in. Joe was an unusually successful cattleman, building his T Triangle Ranch to a prominent and profitable 64,000 acre spread. His beef was grass fed, and always produced top prices. Joe’s hat was often seen at the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, where he rose to the top echelons, and became the friends of the leaders, the members and the young cattlemen of the state and nation. He won almost every honor the Stock Growers had to offer, and was recognized as a leader of leaders in the industry when he became Chairman of the Board of the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Executive (Regional) Vice President of the American Cattlemens’ Association.

Joe’s well-known stetson was also found in the educational arena. Always generous, along with his wife Arlene, to the University of Wyoming and Sheridan College, Joe reached the pinnacle in this field, too, when he was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees at his beloved state university. His and Arlene’s names will be forever remembered as they grace the American Heritage Center at the University in recognition of their personal and financial contributions.

Another hat Joe wore extremely well was that of businessman. As bank president, board member and Board Chairman, insurance company owner and board member, and hospital board member, he demonstrated his financial and leadership abilities and his excellent judgement in every situation in which he hung that hat.

Watt was chosen to represent his local and state communities in such organizations as the Weston County Commissioners (Board Chairman) and the American Cancer Society. His community supporter hat was certainly one of many stripes and colors.

Joe also wore a hat filled with generosity. His and his wife’s philanthropy for some forty years have benefitted the people of Wyoming in so many areas. Education was the primary recipient with the University of Wyoming, Sheridan College, and Sheridan High School receiving generous amounts; but this part of their money has gone chiefly to the young people of the state, mostly in the form of hundreds of scholarships. The Sheridan hospital, library, the seniors’ organization, and YMCA have also been beneficiaries of the Watt generosity, as have numerous other organizations across the state.

One hat that fit Joe extremely well is that of “friend”. Joe never met a stranger. Whether he sat next to you on an airplane, asked you to fill his car’s gas tank, served with you on a prestigious board of directors, or stayed up all night with you delivering a calf, didn’t matter. Joe could make friends with anybody, and once you were a friend, you could always count on him to be there when he was needed. He always gave his friends most of the credit for his many achievements.

And the final hat Joe Watt wore: that of husband. He always considered his wife of 68 years, Arlene Bundy Watt, an integral part of everything he did and accomplished. The Watts had no children, but together they left a legacy to the communities in which they lived and to the state they loved so much.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Melius officiating. Interment will be in the Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Memorials may be made in Joe’s name to the Joe and Arlene Watt Foundation in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.
