Katherine Shephard, 99, of Dayton, passed away on Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Katherine was born on September 27, 1904, in the Cedar Creek Community of Riley County, Kansas, to Charles and Helen (Keefer) Van Pelt. During the "Roaring Twenties" she eloped and married George E. Shepherd in Manitou Springs, Colorado.

Katherine loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, cats, airline flights, crocheting, and tatting. She also loved sports, following Kansas college and professional sports teams with great interest. Katherine taught Sunday School for twenty two years, .

Mrs. Shepherd was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and five siblings. She is survived by one sister, Dola McIntyre of Randolph, KS, her niece Norma Nichols of Dayton and many other nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place locally and memorial services will be held at a later date in Kansas. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Katherine N. Zullig, 91, of Pueblo, CO, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 in Pueblo, CO.

Mrs. Zullig was born August 15, 1912 in Sheridan, WY to Gilbert K. and Ada E. (Norton) Halley. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan, graduating from Sheridan High School. She then attended and graduated from Missouri State Teacher’s College. She married Raymond Zullig in 1941. Mrs. Zullig worked as a legal secretary until her marriage, when she became a full time homemaker. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. She loved music and played the organ for many years.

Mrs. Zullig was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband.

She is survived by one daughter, Carol Zuercher, of Rye, CO; one son, Alan Zullig, of Renton, WA; 3 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.

Graveside services for Mrs. Zullig will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 3, 2004 in the Masonic Circle of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with Bishop Robert Zuercher officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Lavorna Benedict, 89, of Sheridan, passed away on Sunday, April 11, 2004, at Sheridan Manor, after a struggle with cancer.

Lavorna was born on December 31, 1914, in a two-room homestead cabin on Spring Creek, near Kirby, Montana. She was the fourth of six children born to Andrew and Anna Helton. Lavorna was schooled at Spring Creek School and in Sheridan, leaving high school in her sophomore year to join the work force in the depth of the Great Depression. She worked as a housekeeper, nursemaid, kitchen helper, and cook on ranches in the Sheridan area and in Montana. She met her husband, George Benedict, while working at the Quarter Circle U Ranch at Birney, Montana.

After their marriage in 1940, they worked in cow camps for the Cox Ranch, farmed briefly at Birney, and then worked for several ranches in Montana and Wyoming. Upon retirement, Lavorna and her husband spent fifteen winters in Arizona, returning to Wyoming in the summers to work part time at the Folly Ranch in the Big Horns. In 1985 they settled in Sheridan. Lavorna made friends easily and leaves many behind. She enjoyed life, lived it fully, and had few regrets. Lavorna belonged to several social groups, including the "Saddle Bags" and the "Wild Bunch" in Sheridan. She liked small craft projects and was an excellent bead worker. In recent years she taught some craft classes at the Senior Center in Sheridan.

Mrs. Benedict was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers and a sister; her husband, George Benedict; and her son, Earl Benedict. She is survived by her son Les Benedict and his wife Maxine of Helena, MT; her granddaughter Elaine Benedict of Helena, MT; her grandson Brian Benedict stationed in Iraq; her two great-granddaughters Rachel and Michelle Benedict of WA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place locally. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2004, at Kane Funeral Home with Hayden Porter officiating. Kane Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made in Lavorna’s name to the Sheridan Senior Center in care of Brenda Torrens or Nicole Christensen, Community First Bank, P.O. Box 9000, Sheridan ,WY 82801.

George J. Buszkiewic, 80, of Ash Creek, passed away on Friday, April 9, 2004, at his residence after a long battle with cancer with his family at his side.

A viewing will be held all day, and visitation with the family will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at Kane Funeral Home with The Reverend Bill Halvey, SVD officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Mr. Buszkiewic was born March 17, 1924, in Monarch, Wyoming, to Ignace and Anna (Mates) Buszkiewic of Ash Creek. He attended Ash Creek Country School and graduated from Sheridan High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII serving in Japan. He went to work at Big Horn Coal Company in 1947 and retired in 1982 after 35 years of service where he worked as a weldor and tipple operator.

George married Rose M. Legerski on September 28, 1947, at the St. Thomas Church in Monarch. They made their home on the family ranch on Ash Creek where they currently reside. He ranched on Ash Creek his whole life where he enjoyed working the land and raising cattle. He loved spending time with his pets and animals and got great pleasure from watching the wildlife around the ranch. George enjoyed many hours in his shop repairing equipment and working on various projects. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, faithfully tending his garden, always sharing the produce with family and friends. George always lent a helping hand to others and enjoyed visiting with family, friends, and strangers.

Mr. Buszkiewic was a member of UMWA Local 2055 where he served as President for nine years and was a member of the VFW. He and his wife are members of the St. Edmonds Church in Ranchester.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Frances Legerski. Survivors include his wife of Ash Creek; one daughter, Linda Vanatta and her husband Joe of Ash Creek; one son, George E. and his wife Janet of Sheridan; one brother, John of Upper Prairie Dog Road; three step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Big Horns or to the Sheridan Dog & Cat Shelter in care of Kay Roush, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Ronald P. Germann, 80, of Sheridan, passed away on Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at his residence. Services are pending.

Ronald was born on October 4, 1923, in Jackson, WY, to Walter and Pearl (Thacker) Germann. He married Elsie Burr, formerly of Rozet, on December 7, 1957 in Sheridan and raised three children together. Ron grew up in Moran, Wyoming and moved to Sheridan in 1940. He lived with his brother A.F. (Hap) Germann and his family while he finished high school. He then worked for Hap who owned the Birney Freight Lines and then for Germann Gas Service when it was established. In 1977 Ron and Elsie opened Ron’s. L.P. Gas Service and sold the business and retired in 1994. Ron and Elsie spent many winters in Yuma, AZ and a few summers in Alaska and Canada. Ron enjoyed boating, water skiing, fishing, hunting, shooting, playing cards, and especially spending time with his family. Ron was a member of the Arizona Old Time Fiddlers Association, and a lifetime member of the Sheridan County Sportsman’s Association, the National Rifle Association, and the Elk’s Club.

Mr. Germann was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Elsie of Sheridan; his two sons, Larry of Sheridan and Gary of Gillette; his daughter, Wanda Ans of Billings, MT; his ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and his brother Oliver Germann of Buffalo.

A public viewing will be held at Kane Funeral Home on Friday, April 30, 2004 from 4:00p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Kane Funeral Home on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at 11:00 am with Pastor Wilbur Holz officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

The family has requested that memorials be made in Ronald’s name to Hospice of the Big Horns in care of Kay Roush, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007,

Sheridan , WY 82801.

Wilbur Huggins, 89, of Story, passed away on Friday, April 2, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Wilbur S. Huggins was born in Story, Wyoming, on November 24, 1914, to parents James W. and Mary Blanche Huggins. Wilbur was one of a family of nine, with 4 sisters and 4 brothers. Wilbur went to school in Story and then went to work in the Fish Hatchery system for the Wyoming Game & Fish Department in 1931. He worked and supervised several Fish Hatcheries over the state, and retired from the Department in 1979 with 45 years of service to his credit.

Wilbur married Ada Chesney Williams on September 10, 1938, at the TAT ranch in Banner, Wyoming, now known as the Rafter Y Ranch. They moved to several different fish hatcheries within the state. In 1943, Wilbur was inducted into the Army, and served until January 8, 1946.

While in service, he served as a combat infantry NCO in the European theatre of operations from April 1944 until January 1946. He received battle stars for the following: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland Central Europe, and received the following citations: European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, World War II Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation, Rifle Combat Badge, and Expert Rifle and Carbine Badge.

Wilbur is a life member of Elks 520 in Sheridan, and Charter Member of Story Lions Club.

Mr. Huggins was preceded in death by his parents, his four brothers, and three of his sisters. Survivors include his wife Ada; his two daughters Mary Peterson and Sally Johnson, both of Story; his two granddaughters, Heather Johnson and Jennifer Deskins; one great-grandson Tyler Kent; and one sister Jean Lunbeck of Story.

Funeral services will be held at10:30 am on Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Kane Funeral Home with Paddy Bard officiating. Interment will follow in the Kearney Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

The family has requested that memorials be made in Wilbur’s name to the Story Lion’s Club in care of Karen Green, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Karen Marie Klinkhammer, 53, of Sheridan, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Karen was born on November 7, 1950, in Kirkland, WA, to Ron and Virginia (Bartley) Dorning. She married Vincent Klinkhammer on December 22, 1978 in Vancouver, WA. Before making their home in Sheridan for the past fifteen years the couple lived in Seattle, WA. Karen loved to fish, camp, and spend time with friends.

Mrs. Klinkhammer is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. Dorning of Spokane, WA; her husband Vince of Sheridan; Her two children, Tina Blanchette and Michael Rosen both of Spokane, WA; her five grandchildren; and her siblings, Paul Dorning and his wife Nancy and Wayne Dorning, and a sister all of Spokane, WA.

Cremation has taken place locally and a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, 2004, at First Baptist Church. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Charles N. "Lew" Lewallen, 72, of Sheridan, passed away on Friday, April 9, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Mr. Lewallen was born on January 23, 1932, in Casper, Wyoming, to Abner and Beulah (Divelbiss) Lewallen. He was an athletic young man, running wherever he needed to go. He held a long-time record for the 440 yard dash. Another activity he had a great passion for was golf. Caddying at a very young age with his close buddies soon led him to a great ability for the game itself. Fitting in a round of golf with anyone who had an inkling was something he enjoyed throughout most his life. Lew completed high school at Natrona County High School in Casper, Wyoming, and soon after joined the Air Force. His military travels landed him in Maine where he met a beautiful young lady. Charles Neal Lewallen and Bertha May Rossignol were married at St. Thomas Rectory in Milo, Maine, in 1953.

Lew loved rock-hunting and silver-smithing. He enjoyed creating unique pieces of jewelry. His creations are enjoyed by many family members and friends. Lew made his final loving piece of jewelry only a few weeks ago: a beautiful pendent of picture jasper surrounded by swirls and flowers of silver for his wife Bertha. In more recent days, Lew filled his days with looking for a good deal at a garage sale, making shopping trips to Wal Mart, and spending time with his most beloved little Pekingese friend, "Knute". Lew also greatly enjoyed (almost every night at 6 p.m. on the dot) a good laugh around a cup of coffee at the local McDonalds with his wife and friends.

Mr. Lewallen was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers Robert and Orvil Lewallen; his sister Thelma Potter; and two grandchildren Alita and Daniel. Survivors include his wife Bertha of Sheridan; his two sons Timothy Lewallen and Andy Lewallen; his four daughters, Denice Lewallen, Shelly Svilar, Cheryle Brewer, and Venita Lewallen; his two adopted sons Jim Lewallen and John Lewallen; his four adopted daughters Judy Brewer, Janet Brooks, Jackie McDaniel, and Julie Nielsen; his thirty-three grandchildren, LaCosta, Jamie, Audra, Monica, Shawn, Amy, Mandy, Cassie, Izzy, Kymberly, Jessica, Travis, Heather, Matthew, Riley, Josh, Sarah, Emily, Kevin, James, Dennis, Sandy, Kayla, Brenda, Paul, Tina, Stephanie, Jack, Mark, Erin, Mickey, John, and Trevor; his seventeen great-grandchildren; his brother Dale Lewallen; and his two sisters Dorothy Mosteller and Mary Lou Kocherhans.

Rosary services will be at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 11, 2004, at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 12, 2004, at Kane Funeral Home with The Reverend Tom Ogg officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Memorials may be made in Lew’ name to the V.A. Hospital Physical Therapy Department in care of Kay Roush, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Margaret Derrickson Logan, Long-time Big Horn Resident, , 92, died Friday, April 16, 2004 in Cheyenne, WY.

Mrs. Logan was born February 8, 1912 at her family ranch near Aladdan, WY, to Albert and Christina Derrickson. She graduated from Belle Fourche High School, then continued her education at the University of Wyoming. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in English Education in 1936, and her Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling in 1966.

She married Francis Lloyd Logan in Hardin, MT January 31, 1942. Margaret was a classroom teacher, school Principal, a Guidance Counselor, and a partner in the ownership and operation of the Rafter 33 Cattle Company at Big Horn, WY. She was also an author and editor of poetry, and a watercolor artist. Mrs. Logan was an active member of the big Horn Women’s Club, the Big Horn City Historical Society, and the Wyoming Writers group.

Mrs. Logan was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Francis, in 1993, two sisters, and one brother.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas W. Logan, (Debra), of Cheyenne, WY, and Francis T. Logan, (Sheryl), of Rapid City, SD.

Graveside services for Mrs. Logan will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 24, 2004 at the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with Father David Duprey officiating. A luncheon will be held at the Big Horn Women’s Club in Big Horn after the service. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Memorials in memory of Mrs. Logan may be made the Big Horn City Historical Society, or the Big Horn Women’s Club, Big Horn, WY 82833.
