Jess Ellis

Sheridan-native Jess Ellis, 82, of Glenrock died March 27 at his home. Services will be at a later date at Custer Battlefield National Monument cemetery in Montana. Mr. Ellis was born March 26, 1919, in Sheridan to Jesse L. and Vera G. (Range) Ellis. He grew up in Sheridan. He later joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He served in the Army during World War II and was discharged with the rank of warrant officer. He received the Bronze Star, Asiatic Pacific Medal, American Campaign Medal and WWII Victory Medal. He married Ada B. Gleason in Buffalo in 1937. They were later divorced. He married Kathleen L. Thompson in Hardin, Mont., in 1947. She died. He married Jo Fitzhugh in Sheridan in 1985. They lived in Decker, Mont., and moved to Glenrock in 1990. He worked on the Shoshoni Dam with the Peter Kiewit Construction Co. and was a diesel-equipment specialist with the U.S. Army 20 years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #520 in Sheridan and American Legion Post 8 in Douglas. He was preceded in death by a brother, LeRoy. Survivors include his wife, of Glenrock; two sons, Jerry of Aurora, Colo., and Rocke of Castle Pines, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Peggy Anderson of Sheridan and Linda Anderson of Glenrock; a sister, Betty Smart of Redvale, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.

Helen Buyok

Helen P. Buyok, 81, of Sheridan died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Sheridan Manor. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

William Barlow

William L. Barlow, 64, of rural Gillette, died March 29 at his ranch. Visitation is 3-7 p.m. today and Tuesday at Wilson Funeral Home, Gillette. “A Celebration of Life” will be 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Gillette, officiated by family and friends. Mr. Barlow was born Oct. 1, 1936, in Sheridan to Lewis C. and Marion (Heald) Barlow. He was raised on the family ranch on Deadhorse Creek, west of Gillette, and attended school through eighth grade in a one-room schoolhouse in the yard of the ranch house. He graduated from Campbell County High School and earned a degree in agriculture from the University of Wyoming. He spent two years working in Southeast Asia, where he met Bernadette “Bernie” Clairon. She returned with him to the United States and they married May 28, 1963, in Rapid City. They lived in Moorcroft for a year, where Mr. Barlow taught school. They returned to the family ranch in 1964. He enjoyed archeology and history, served in the Wyoming National Guard and was a member of the boards of directors of the Campbell County Senior Citizens Center and the Rockpile Museum. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife of Gillette; a son, Eric of Gillette; two daughters, Michele Barlow of Gillette and Nicole Barlow of Missoula, Mont.; two sisters, Rosemary Schunk of Sheridan and Edith Humann of Renton, Wash.; and two grandchildren. Memorials may benefit the Rockpile Museum or the Powder River Basin Resource Council in Sheridan in care of Wilson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 734, Gillette, WY 82717.

Beatrice Cowherd

Beatrice J. Cowherd, 85, of Sheridan died March 30 at her home. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held later in Illinois. Interment will be in Fort Mead National cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Cowherd was born Nov. 25, 1915, in De Kalb, Ill., to Edith (Norman) and Arthur Milton Parkhouse Sr. She attended schools in De Kalb. She married John J. Cowherd in De Kalb in 1942. She was employed as an elementary teacher for the Winnebago County School District 35 years. After retirement she assisted her husband pastoring a Foursquare church in Thorp, Wis. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; a daughter, Sherryl D. Wright of Sheridan; a brother, Arthur William Parkhouse Jr. of De Kalb; and four grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations benefit Hospice of the Big Horns in care of Kay Roush, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Linda Tobey

Former Sheridan resident Linda E. Tobey, 49, of Laramie died March 28 at University Hospital in Denver. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Laramie with the Rev. David Shaw officiating. Interment will be at Greenhill cemetery. Arrangements are with Buck-Heggie Funeral Home. Ms. Tobey was born April 19, 1961, in Boulder, Colo., to Roger E. and A. Ann (Shaw) Tobey. She was a registered licensed professional nurse. She worked for the Laramie Police Department until she moved to Sheridan in 1995, where she worked as an LPN until she returned to Laramie last July. She was the close friend of Jack Gore of Laramie. Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Ann and Sam Evans, and father, Gene Tobey, all of Laramie; two daughters, Jodee Bennett of Erie, Colo., and Jessee Parker of Laramie; a son, Joe Hurtado of Firestone, Colo.; a brother, Bob Tobey of Manhattan, Mont.; three sisters, Sheryl Glover of St. George, Utah, Alicia Morgan of Laramie and Judee Sandman of Grand Island, Neb.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Theresa Hamm

Theresa M. Hamm, 89, of Sheridan died Wednesday in Westview Health Care Center. Viewing will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery with the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Mrs. Hamm was born June 16, 1911, in Audubon, Iowa, to Lyman and Mollie (Latshaw) Harwood. She grew up and attended schools in Guthrie County, Iowa. She came to Sheridan in the late 1930s and worked on a ranch for a while. She later worked at a dry cleaners in Sheridan, where she met Lumen E. Hamm. They were married June 6, 1943, in Sheridan. The couple owned and operated the Wolf Hutt Cafe in Sheridan until they retired because of his health. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening and cooking. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1972; four sisters, Lois Tallman, Letha Simmons, Daisy Jontz and Gertrude Trent; and two brothers, Lyman and Luther Harwood. Survivors include a brother, Wesley Harwood of Menlo, Iowa; two sisters, Norma Messersmith of Creston, Iowa, and Dorothy Menefee of Guthrie Center, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Thomas Belkonen

BUFFALO — Thomas Clinton Belkonen, 69, of Buffalo died Sunday at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo with Father Charles Taylor officiating. The VFW and American Legion will be in charge of military services. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home. Mr. Belkonen was born Nov. 23, 1931, in Chicago to John and Evelyn Belkonen. He joined the Marine Corps after high school. He married Catherine McCarthy in 1955. He served in Korea and Vietnam before retiring with the rank of captain in 1971. He moved to Buffalo in 1992. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister. Survivors include his wife and two sons, Brad and Clint, all of Santa Barbara, Calif.

Jessie L. Reese

BUFFALO — Jessie Lee Reese, 87, of Buffalo died Tuesday at her home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Willow Grove cemetery, Buffalo, with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Mrs. Reese was born Aug. 2, 1913, in Hominy, Okla., to Harry and Eliza Curtis. The family moved to Buffalo when she was a girl. She graduated from Johnson County High School in 1933. She married Richard Dawson May 30, 1934, in Hardin, Mont., and they lived in the Sheridan and Buffalo areas. She married Harry Reese June 26, 1945, in Hardin. They made their home in Buffalo. Mrs. Reese was preceded in death by both her husbands, her parents and two sisters. Survivors include a son, James Dallas Dawson of Buffalo; a granddaughter; and a nephew. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home, Buffalo.

Helen M. Sorvik

Helen M. Sorvik, 80, Sheridan, died Tuesday at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Graveside services are 3 p.m. Friday at Sheridan Municipal cemetery, the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Born May 1, 1920, in Sheridan to Charles and Mary (Lyle) McCoy, Mrs. Sorvik grew up and graduated from high school in Sheridan. She attended business college in Sheridan and worked several years as secretary for the city. She married Jack Sorvik in Cheyenne. They lived in Sheridan before divorcing. She owned and operated a gift and antique shop until retiring due to health. A member of First Christian Church, she loved cats and enjoyed sewing and gardening. Survivors include a brother, Carl McCoy, Sheridan; a sister, Esther Stevison, Sheridan; three nieces; and a nephew. A son, Kelly Sorvik, preceded her in death.

Betty Jane Smiley

Betty Jane Smiley, 79, Sheridan, died Monday at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Viewing is 7 to 9 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, the Rev. Arthur Maendl officiating, with burial in Sheridan Municipal cemetery.
Born March 8, 1922, in Lowell, Mich., to Carl R. and Helen (Gregory) Wittenbach, she married Kenneth C. Smiley in August 1940.
Mrs. Smiley enjoyed her family, friends, church, flowers, traveling, and fishing. She was a longtime member of First Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include three sons, Gordon Lee Smiley of Riverton, Jerold S. Smiley of Sheridan, and Ben Ray Smiley of Las Vegas; 10 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, James C. and Michael Smiley; and a brother, George Wittenbach.
Memorials may benefit Church of the Nazarene Building Fund in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, PO Box 2007, Sheridan.

Bernard Farmer

Bernard K. Farmer Sr., 79, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements, and Bustard’s Funeral Home in Casper is handling arrangements there.

Vincent Beamish

Former Sheridan resident Vincent W. Beamish, 30, of Dayton, Nev., died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, in an auto accident. Viewing will be at Champion Ferries Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. today and on Tuesday until time of service. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Barber officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mr. Beamish was born June 12, 1970, in Chadron, Neb., to William and Betty Lou (Davis) Beamish. The family moved to Sturgis, S.D., then to Sheridan in 1982. Mr. Beamish graduated from Sheridan High School where he was active in Drama Club and won a tournament in ninjitsu. He was a former employee of RENEW and Hardee’s Restaurant. He moved to Dayton, Nev., in 1997 and worked at RTP, a plastics factory. He also was working part time for Amazon.com. He enjoyed rafting, bungee-jumping, cooking, music, and attending concerts. He was a member of the Dayton (Nev.) Volunteer Fire Department and attended the River of Life Church. Survivors include his mother, Betty Davis of Sheridan; father and stepmother, William and Mary Beamish of Monroe, Wash.; a brother, Mark, and sister, Becky Oatts, both of Sheridan; a grandmother, Gladys Beamish of Chadron; several aunts and uncles and numerous cousins.

Frances Hutton

Former Sheridan resident Frances C. Hutton, 71, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, in Haddonfield, N.J. Services will be private. Arrangements are with Holl-Murphy Funeral Home of Haddonfield. Survivors include one sister, Betty Garfield of Haddonfield. Memorials may be made to the Ester Boyer Call of Music, Temple University, 2001 N. 13th St., Philadelphia, PA 19122 or the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, 5001 Angel Canyon Drive, Kanab, Utah 84741.

Daniel Wright

Daniel M. Wright, 81, of Sheridan died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place, and services will be at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys L. Tracy

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. — Former Sheridan resident Gladys L. Tracy, 68, of Lacey, Wash., died Thursday, May 17, 2001, in a car accident in Scottsbluff. Cremation has taken place at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff. A celebration of her life will be June 30 at Mountain Greens Community Hall in Lacey. Mrs. Tracy was born Dec. 21, 1932, in Mitchell, Neb., to Perley and Elenor (Phillips) Weston. She married Lester Otto Tracy Oct. 4, 1957. She lived in Sheridan for 24 years. She moved to Lacey in 1998. She was proceeded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Terry; and a great-granddaughter. Survivors include two sons, Stanley of Sheridan and Kenneth of Rainier, Wash.; a stepson, Gary of Colorado; two daughters, Belinda Elkins of Sutherin, Ore., and Bobbi Teall of Olympia, Wash.; two stepdaughters, Carolyn Clabough of Colorado and Linda Paull of Montrose, Colo.; three brothers, Gene Weston of Fairplay, Mo., Gary Weston of Harlingen, Texas, and Kenneth Weston of Bend, Ore.; a sister, Betty Nichols of Marshfield, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Ida Oelschlager

Former longtime Sheridan resident Ida D. Oelschlager, 94, died April 20, 2001, in Tucson, Ariz. Graveside committal of cremains will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Jerry Allen

HARDIN, Mont. — Former Sheridan resident Jerry Belle Allen, 90, of Hardin died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at the Heritage Acres nursing home.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in the Sheridan Elks cemetery with Kevin Jones officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Allen was born Nov. 26, 1910, near Hulett to Robert and Erma Tate. The family moved to Sheridan County when she was 15. They settled near Ranchester. She rode race horses for some of the prominent horse breeders in the Big Horn area during her high school years and became a trick rider. She was a graduate of Sheridan High School and took a year of normal training to become a teacher. She taught in a one-room country school near Beckton for five years. She married Howard Allen in 1935 in Sheridan. He worked at saddle shops and she made shirts and leather apparel, including the leather outfits worn by Sheridan rodeo queens. The family later moved to Otter Creek, Mont., and bought 12 acres near Ashland. They returned to Sheridan in 1983. Mr. Allen died in 1996, and she moved to Custer, Mont., then to Hardin. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Erma, and a sister, Naomi Penton. Survivors include a son, Harry; a brother, Bob; and four grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice in care of Mary Ann Rector, Ranchester State Bank, P.O. Box 789, Ranchester, WY 82839.

Pauline Dryden

Pauline E. Dryden, 92, of Sheridan died Saturday, June 9, 2001, in Ranchester. Viewing is until 5 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery, Masonic 8 Section, with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Mrs. Dryden was born July 6, 1908, in Illinois to Henry and Bessie (Hanna) Roe. The family moved to Billings when she was 10, and later moved to Sheridan. She graduated from Sheridan High School. She married Percy Dryden June 2, 1926, in Sheridan. She played piano in small bands in Sheridan for many years and played the organ for weddings, funerals and at First Christian Church, where she was a member. She was a member of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1974 and by a son, Bobby Gene; two sisters, Ernestine Lowther and Lola Smith; and a stepsister, Viola Soloman. Survivors include her companion, Rudy Schilling of Ranchester; a son, Gerald Dryden; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to benefit First Christian Church.

Larry Mitchell

Larry Joel Mitchell, 53, of Sheridan died April 30, 2001, of natural causes in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Celebration of life will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Medicine Wheel in the Big Horns. Prayer service with potluck will follow. Champion Ferries Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

BUFFALO — Rene August Hampe, 78, of Buffalo died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at his residence. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Wednesday and 8-9:30 a.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Carlton officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery with the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars in charge of military graveside services.

Donald Bishop

BUFFALO — Donald Dean Bishop, 68, of Buffalo died Sunday, June 10, 2001, of natural causes at Johnson County Health Care Center. Private interment by the family will be later.

Golden Averett

GILLETTE — Golden Smith Averett, 73, of Gillette died Friday, June 8, 2001, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital from complications of chronic leukemia. His widow, Opal Maxine, was a longtime resident of Sheridan before their marriage Nov. 1, 1986, in Sheridan. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Wilson Funeral Home in Gillette. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Gillette with Bishop Dave Dewey presiding. Interment will be in Mount Pisgah cemetery. Other survivors include six daughters, Dorothy Hoopes, Janet Thompson and Jaycee Rose, all of Gillette, Arlene Herman of Boise, Idaho, Lorene Snyder of Greenwood, Ind., and Linda Degele of Laurel, Mont.; a son, Harry of Gillette; a sister, Genera Robinson of Cokeville; two brothers, Robert of Sidney, Mont., and Tom Z. of Lovell; six stepchildren; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; numerous stepgrandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

Martha Josephine Burke

Martha Josephine Burke, 76, of Sheridan died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place and committal will be by the family at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Burke was born Jan. 16, 1925, at Slater Creek to Frank Milford and Ica Belle (Truelove) Benedict. She married Robert Patrick Burke in September 1951 in Casper. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eagles and Royal Neighbors. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Winnie and Florence; four brothers, George, Jim, Dutch and Bill; and her husband. Survivors include children Merry Jo Reimers of Denver, and Richard White and Pat Burke, both of Sheridan; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Rosa Smith, Seattle. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Sheridan Senior Center Meals on Wheels Program in care of Kay Roush, First Federal Savings Bank, Box 7007, Sheridan, WY 82801.
