Allan 'Jack' Berland - 04/08/03

Graveside services for Gillette resident Allan "Jack" Johnnie Berland, 63, were Friday at Black Hills National Cemetery with the Rev. Moe Greiner officiating. Military honors were provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard.

Mr. Berland died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at the Fort Meade Veterans Association Medical Center of natural causes.

He is survived by his wife Dixie Berland of Gillette; two stepsons, Gerald Lower of Rapid City, S.D., and John Lower of Valentine, Neb.; three stepdaughters, Debbie McGee and Linda Moyer, both of Gillette and Wanda Bare, of Valentine; one brother, Wayne Berland of Kenmare, N.D.; two sisters, Evelyn Brakke of Velva, N.D. and Delores Paul of Lodi, Calif.; and 12 stepgrandchildren.

Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, S.D., was in charge of arrangements.

David Peterson - 02/06/01

David J. Peterson, 85, of rural Sundance, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Crook County Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Peterson; two daughters, Diana Hazelkamp of Goshen, N.Y., and Jean Peterson of rural Sundance; and two grandchildren.

Services are pending with Fidler-Roberts Funeral Chapel of Sundance.

Marvin Barnes - 04/13/01

Services for former Gillette man Marvin McClellan Barnes will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Champion Ferries Funeral Home in Sheridan. Burial will follow in the Elks Cemetery.

Mr. Barnes, 86, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in Sheridan County Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

He was born Aug. 7, 1914, to Pearl R. Will and Fred E. Barnes. When he was about 1 year old, his family moved to Gillette by train. They lived in a homestead shack south of Gillette. He quit school after the eighth grade.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-45 and fought in World War II, earning a Good Conduct and other ribbons. He also earned Bronze Stars in four combat zones. He received the Order of the Purple Heart when he was hit in the head with shrapnel.

After the war, he married Phyrne L. Glover of Gillette and they had two children. He moved his family to Thermopolis in 1948, where they owned a grocery store. In 1950, they moved to Sheridan, where he worked as a butcher and then for the CB&Q Railroad.

He divorced in 1966 and remarried Avril Swearingin.

He retired in 1980 from the Sheridan Post Office.

He enjoyed snowmobiling, fishing, and hunting in the Big Horn Mountains. He also enjoyed playing pool and dancing.

He was a member of the Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 and the American Legion Post 7.

He loved children, animals and Wyoming.

He is survived by his son, Roger Barnes of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; daughter, Cynthia Dennis of Sheridan; two sisters, Elsie Mapel of Grand Junction, Colo., and Mildred Howard of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother Earl Barnes of Salt Lake City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and his wife.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Marvin B. McClellan Memorial, First Interstate Bank, Attn: Delphine Toner. They will benefit glaucoma research.

Donald Hayden - 12/23/01

Funeral services for Gillette man Donald "Ike" Hayden, 81, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Bible Church in Gillette with the Rev. Charles Small officiating.

Burial with full military honors provided by American Legion Post #42 will follow at Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Gillette.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until noon Wednesday at Wilson Funeral Home in Gillette.

He died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, S.D., of natural causes.

He was born Aug. 13, 1920, in Oshkosh, Neb., to Glen and Zaida (Rippey) Hayden. He moved with his family at a young age to Lauver, Wyo., and later to a ranch 20 miles south of Gillette. He graduated from Campbell County High School in 1939, then attended Barber College in Omaha, Neb.

In 1940, he began his barber career in Hemingford, Neb., where he worked for a year. He married Alta Vivian Rodman on Feb. 23, 1941, in Ogden, Utah.

He returned to Gillette and worked as a barber for Bill Barnes, Sam Hamilton and Elza Davis until being drafted.

He entered the Air Force in September 1942 and was honorably discharged in October 1945. He came back to Gillette and worked for Elza Davis until opening Gillette Barber Shop in 1947. He owned and operated the business until recently.

He was a member of Grace Bible Church. He enjoyed all livestock and raised Shetland ponies for many years and had sheep and cattle.

He is survived by his wife, of Gillette; daughter, Donna Rae Draine of Gillette; son Glenn Irvin of Silver Springs, Nev.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bud Hayden and Bob Hayden, both of Gillette; three sisters, Norma Duvall of Gillette, Neva Wilmot of Upton and Neta Rae Christensen of Casper.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kae Rene Hayden; his parents; and a brother, Darrell Hayden.

Memorials are requested to benefit the charity of the donor's choice.

George Bennett - 12/13/02

George Bennett, 69, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital following an illness.

Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LaVerne Schuh - 02/06/03

Funeral services for Baker, Mont., resident LaVerne Schuh, 78, the mother of three Gillette residents, were at 11 a.m. today at the American Lutheran Church in Baker.

Burial will be at the Schuh family lot in Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Gillette. Graveside rites will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Pisgah.

Mrs. Schuh died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at the Specialized Complex Care Inc. Hospital in Mandan, N.D., following a long illness.

She was born April 7, 1924, in Krim, N.D., to Jacob and Pauline (Newman) Neuberger. She grew up and attended school in Krim before marrying Roy Schuh on April 20, 1947, in Hazen, N.D.

They moved to Baker in 1965. She worked at the Fallon Medical Complex for 31 years.

After retiring, she volunteered with the Pink Ladies and enjoyed attending senior center events. She was a dedicated member of the American Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Schuh is survived by her husband; three sons, including Donald Schuh and Sherald Schuh, both of Gillette; and a daughter, LaRay Markve, also of Gillette; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two infant children; a brother; and a sister.

Stevenson Funeral Homes Inc. of Baker and Ekalaka, Mont., is in charge of arrangements.
