Lenora 'Lee' Phillips Witmer

Services for Lenora “Lee” Phillips Witmer, 93, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Jacksonville, were Friday at 2 p.m. at K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Crematory, with the Rev. James Robertson officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Witmer died Aug. 24 at Citadel Medical Center in Mesa.

Survivors include her husband, Victor E. Witmer of Mesa; two step-daughters, Tonya Witmer of Kansas City, Kan., and Trnac Hamilton of Mesa; two stepsons, Phane Witmer and Thair Witmer, both of Topeka, Kan.; two sisters-in-law, Billie Grace Rockett of Birmingham and Marguerite Rockett of Atlanta; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews

Mrs. Witmer was a native of Birmingham and had lived in Jacksonville many years. She was a graduate of Jacksonville State University and taught in the Calhoun County school system 25 years. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Jacksonville, where she taught children’s Sunday school classes. She was a member of the Joy Group, the Retired Teachers Association, the AEA, the Progressive Study Club, the Annie Forney Daugette Garden Club, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Guy Phillips, and a daughter, Florida Phillips.

Donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Jacksonville, P. O. Box 1025, Jacksonville 36265.

Barkley

CENTRE

Services for Charles Milton Barkley, 84, of Centre will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Perry Funeral Home with Revs. Hoover Crider and Jack Chandler officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Barkley died Monday at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Moon Barkley; three sons and their wives, Buddy and Doris Barkley of Centre, Paul and Geneva Barkley of Dillon, S.C., and Larry and Janet Barkley of Rome, Ga.; two daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Jack Ray of Rosebud, S.D., and Julie Barkley of Centre; a niece and her husband, Dottie Barkley Strabley and Chuck Strabley; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Barkley was a native of Cherokee County and the son of the late Henry and Rebecca Patty Barkley. He was a retired farmer and textile worker. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Blanton

HEFLIN

Services for Willie Marie Blanton, 74, of Heflin will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at New Harmony Baptist Church. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at Dryden Funeral Home.

Mrs. Blanton died Tuesday at Regional Medical Center.

Bothwell

GADSDEN

Services for Kenneth Bothwell, 41, of Gadsden will be announced by Sims Funeral Service in Talladega.

Mr. Bothwell died Tuesday at Gadsden Regional Medical Center.

Carr

HEFLIN

Services for Maebell Carr, 76, of Heflin, formerly of Talladega, will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Talladega Funeral Home with Rev. J.R. Carmichael officiating. Burial will be in Vincent Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Carr died Monday at Cleburne County Nursing Home.

Survivors include two sons, Marvin W. Mayo of Heflin and Clyde Ray Mayo of Talladega; a half brother, Carl Doug Duck of Vincent; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Michael Mayo, Mark Mayo, Jeff Mayo, Rodney Mayo, Shae Sanders, Dixon Cooper, Freddy Harris and Fredick Harris.

Mrs. Carr was a native of Shelby County and had lived in Talladega County many years. She was a homemaker.

Hindman

CEDAR BLUFF

Graveside services for Ernest Charlie Hindman, 70, of Cedar Bluff will be today at 2 p.m. at Union Hill Cemetery with Rev. Leroy McKissick officiating and Perry Funeral Home in charge.

Mr. Hindman died Monday at Cherokee Baptist Medical Center.

Survivors include two brothers, Leroy Hindman and Calvin Hindman, both of Cedar Bluff; two sisters, Lois Crane and Cathrine Reese, both of Cedar Bluff; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hindman was a native of Cherokee County and the son of the late Charlie and Alma McClung Hindman. He was a retired farmer and had been a Baptist.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Union Hill Cemetery Fund.

King

TUCKER, Ga.

Services for Evelyn C. King, 87, of Tucker, formerly of Weaver, will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Forestlawn Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. Bill Snow officiating. Burial will be in Forestlawn Mausoleum. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at Gray Brown-Service Mortuary and Crematory.

Mrs. King died Monday at Decatur Hospital in Decatur.

Survivors include a daughter, Pamela King of Alexandria; a son, Douglas F. King of Tucker; two brothers, Thomas M. Crain of Pensacola, Fla., and William D. Crain of Atlanta; three grandchildren, Jessica Cummings, Patrick Pettis and Richard Wilson; and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. King was a lifelong resident of Calhoun County and had been a registered nurse at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital for many years. She was a member of Edgewood Congregational Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elzah O. King; a grandchild, Vanessa Cooper; and a great-grandchild, Reina Wilson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Edgewood Congregational Methodist Church or a favorite charity.

Perry

ROANOKE

Services for Ola Perry, 94, of Roanoke will be announced by Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee.

Miss Perry died Tuesday at Wedowee Hospital.

Willman

JACKSONVILLE

Services for Dorothy Elizabeth Willman, 75, of Jacksonville will be Friday at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday in the church parlor. K.L. Brown Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Willman died Tuesday at Jacksonville Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dorothy Willman Scholarship Fund, c/o Jacksonville State University Foundation Inc., 700 Pelham Road N., Jacksonville, AL 36265.

February 14, 2002

John Virgil Banks

Services for John Virgil Banks, 79, of Heflin were held Feb. 8 at Dryden Funeral Home with Rev. Roy Bryant officiating. Burial followed in the Lecta Cemetery. Dryden Funeral Home was in charge of the services.

Mr. Banks died Feb. 6 at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center. He was born Aug. 22, 1922 in Lecta. Mr. Banks was a resident of Cleburne County for most of his life. He attended the Baptist church and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include two brothers, Ray Banks of Oxford and Vernon Banks of Lecta; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were David Cox, Randell White, Jimmy Ray Vinson, Hal Wilson, Ashley Truett and Gary Snow.

William Jefferson Davis, Sr.

Services for William Jefferson Davis, Sr., 97, of Fruithurst were held Feb. 6 at Fruithurst United Methodist Church with Rev. James Owens and Brother Donald Payne officiating. Burial followed in the Fruithurst City Cemetery. Dryden Funeral Home was in charge of the services.

Mr. Davis died Feb. 4 at Beverly Health Care. He was born July 16, 1904, in Carrollton, Ga.. He was a life long resident of Cleburne County. He was a logger and a member of Fruithurst United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Wanda Davis, Jr. of Fruithust; a brother, Gene Davis of Fruithurst; one grandchid and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Archie Farmer, Albert Lee Junior, Johnny Laminack, Joe Robinson, Donald Rochester and Willard Walker.

Ethel Amelia Hogan

Services for Ethel Amelia Hogan, 77, of Piedmont were held Feb. 10 at Dryden Funeral Home with Rev. James Fuller officiating. Burial followed in the Edwardsville Cemetery. Dryden Funeral Home was in charge of the services.

Mrs. Hogan died Feb. 8 at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center. She was born Dec. 10, 1924, in Johnson Town, N.Y. Mrs. Hogan was a resident of Cleburne County most of her life. She was a member of Edwardsville Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Owens of Edwardsville and Paula Vincent of Piedmont; a sister, Ada Wagonhoffer of Fontona, Calif; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were family and friends.

Norma Ruth McCormick

Services for Norma Ruth McCormick, 75, of Muscadine were held Feb. 4 at Bethel United Methodist Church in Muscadine with Dr. Roland Brown and the Revs. Dennis Smith, Larry Yarburough and Kevin Lapier officiating. Music was provided by Tommy Smith. Burial followed in the Concord Baptist Church Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home of Tallapoosa was in charge of the services.

Mrs. McCormick died Feb. 2. She was born Jan. 6, 1927, in Cleburne County, to the late Aaron and Essie Kilgore Godwin. She is preceded in death by her husband Robert Olen Cunningham, a sister Lois Roberts, and brothers Hugh Godwin and Howard Godwin, all of Muscadine.

Survivors include her husband, J.P. McCormick; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Rodney Newman and Nelda and Philip Eidson, all of Tallapoosa, Ga.; a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Rae Cunningham of Temple, Ga.; sisters, Pauline Laminack of Fruithurst and Beulah Hare of Muscadine; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Tony Laminack, Ronnie Laminack, Richard Rainey, Wayne Lester, Bob Khune and Vic McElroy.
