OWEN E. COX

VESTAVIA HILLS - Owen E. Cox, 78 years of age, of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, passed on to be with his savior, Jesus Christ, on May 3, 2008. With Joyce Jean, his loving wife of 52 years, at his side, Owen slipped away peacefully.

Owen was a native of Talladega, Alabama, the son of E.C. and Nellie Ree Cox, each of whom preceded him in death. Owen had two sisters: Elmarie Goodwin, of Anniston, and Carolyn Palmer, who preceded him in death. Owen went on to be a stellar athlete in high school, playing almost every play of Talladega High’s two undefeated state championship seasons in 1946 and 1947.

Always grounded by lifelong friendships from this exceptional group of teammates, Owen went on to travel coast-to-coast-to-coast playing college, semi-professional and professional football. After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, Owen returned to Alabama to graduate from Jacksonville State University in 1955 and marry the love of his life, Joyce Jean Abrams, in the same year on July 31st.

In addition to his wife, Owen is survived by two sons and their families: Owen Bradley Cox, married to Karen, and their children Brennan and Hayley, of Arlington, Texas; and Eric Bartwell Cox, married to Lisa, and their children Sharkmen and Eric, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Owen will be fondly remembered by Brennan, Hayley, Sharkmen and Eric as their “Grandpa.”

Owen had a rewarding career of more than 20 years with the National Cash Register Company. After retiring from NCR, Owen continued his business endeavors as a homebuilder and real estate developer, leaving a legacy of successful projects that will endure for many years to come. Owen was a member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church.

Owen’s passing leaves a void that through time will be filled with the many happy memories he created through his good works as a loving husband, a nurturing father and a patriotic citizen.

Visitation is at 1:00 p.m., on Monday, May 5th, at Usrey Brown-Service Funeral Home, 516 North Street East, Talladega, Alabama, 35160, to be followed by a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Talladega.
