Jerry Weiss Griffin

Jerry Weiss Griffin, 63, of Carlisle died Thursday, March 6, 2003.
He was a retired Navy veteran and retired form Trimble Navigation.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Griffin; two sons, Ben McCaffrey and Bryan Kieth Griffin; two daughters, Debbie Farley and Kaye Ross; two sisters, Francis Roller and Nancy Kittler; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were March 9, at Immanuel Baptist Church in Carlisle with interment in the Carlisle Cemetery. Westbrook Funeral Home of Hazen was in charge.

Donald Ray Chism

Donald Ray Chism, 61, of North Little Rock, died March 8, 2003.
He was a member of Jacksonville First Assembly of God.

He is survived by wife, Pauline Chism of North Little Rock; two sons, Donnie Lee Chism of Lonoke, and Danny Osborne of Mountain View; two daughters, Rhonda Jo Morgan of Foley, Ala., and Paula Edens of Vilonia; four brothers, Glen Chism of Norfork, Dale Chism of Dunkirk, Ind., Noel Chism and Curtis Chism of Lonoke; three sisters, Marie Smith of Muncie, Ind., Erma Sexton of Calico Rock, and Velma Tunnicliff of Elizabeth; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were Tuesday at Jacksonville First Assembly of God with committal service at Optimus Cemetery, Calico Rock.

Fleet Sturgeon

Fleet Sturgeon, 86, of Mayflower, died Friday, March 7, 2003.

Survivors include a son, Donnie Sturgeon of Cabot; a daughter, Wanda York of Mayflower; stepsons, Charlie Shadell of Alabama, and David Frizzell of Scotland; stepdaughters, Frances Goodnight of Florida, and Tamara Middleland of Kansas; a brother, Vestal Sturgeon of Conway; 3 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were March 10, at First Baptist Church, Mayflower, with burial in Mayflower Cemetery.

Rebecca Sue Kuehler

Rebecca Sue Kuehler of Cabot died March 2, 2003, at the age of 66.
Survivors include her husband of 39 years, Raymond Kuehler Jr. of Cabot; three sons, Joe Pusateri of Memphis, Tenn., Frank Pusateri of Ward and Raymond Kuehler III of Little Rock; two daughters, Paula Bumpus of Azel, Texas, and Sue Scott of Cabot; 10 grandchildren; three sisters, Johnnie Lou “Sugar” Waggoner, Paulette Pryde and Linda Jung.

A celebration of her life was held Thursday, March 6, at Griffin-Leggett-Rest Hills Chapel with interment at Rest Hills Memorial Park.

Roy C. Rettig

Roy C. Rettig, 78, Beebe, died Saturday, March 8, 2003, at his home. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Garner Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Frances Rettig; one son, Greg Rettig of Beebe; two daughters, Pearlene Arthur of Garner and Ruby Wiggs of Beebe; three sisters, Pauline Howton, Betty Bradford, both of Beebe and Bobbie Bagshaw of Ward; one brother, Charles Rettig of Beebe; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a stepson, David Newman of Beebe; three step-daughters, Nuggett Fritz of McRae, Nellis Wixon of Fisher and Ann Mace of Ohio.
Funeral service was Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at Westbrook Funeral Home with burial in Beebe Cemetery.

Homer White

Homer White, 90, of Cabot, passed away Sunday at Rebsamen Hospital in Jacksonville.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Jeremiah and Ernestine Jordan White and his wife, Martha White.

He is survived by one daughter, Doris Szafranski and her husband, John, of Cabot; five sons, Shelby White and his wife, Gloria, Homer Gene White, Vernon White and his wife, Mary, and Jerry White and his wife, Linda, all of Cabot, and Andrew White and his wife, Nancy, of Sherwood; fifteen grandchildren with another expected soon, Shelly Westmoreland, Gina Gilliam, Jeff White, Jeremy White, Michelle Holt, Beth Kiesler, Genny White, Vernon White, Jr., Megan White, Eddie McMinn, Nicole White, Amy Johnston, Michele Smith, Homer Alen White, Jr., and Brandie McMinn; fifteen great- grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews. He is known by many and will be greatly missed.

Funeral services were Wednesday, March 12 at 2:00 pm at Cabot Funeral Chapel. Arrangements by Cabot Funeral Home.

Hazel J. Glover

Hazel J. Glover, 93, of Carlisle, founder of Chambers Nursing Home Center Inc., departed this life to be with the Lord on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Carlisle, Ark.

A successful businesswoman, beloved mother and grandmother serving at the time of her death as board member and secretary/treasurer of Chambers Nursing Home Center Inc. of Carlisle and also serving as administrator previously for 40 years.

Her mother, Irene “Fat Mama” Chambers, who established the parent corporation Chambers Nursing Home Inc., which was the first licensed nursing home in Lonoke County, preceded her daughter in death. Hazel officially joined her mother in the business approximately 40 years ago.

Hazel was recognized for her outstanding service by the nursing home industry, receiving numerous awards and was honored by the Area Agency on Aging for her dedicated service.

She was also honored by receiving citations from the executive and legislative branches of state government from the state of Arkansas.

A native of Lonoke County, born in Ward, Ark., she went on to graduate from Lonoke High School. On May 28, 1928, she was united in marriage to W.H. Glover Jr. and was previously recognized by President Bill Clinton in the year of 2000 for this milestone in their life together. They have just recently celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary.

The Carlisle community will always remember her and W.H. sitting on the front porch of their old home place watching the traffic go by and visiting with their family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Irene Chambers; a son, Bill Glover both of Carlisle; and a half-brother, Reginald Garrett of Fordyce, Ark.
She is survived by her husband, W.H. Glover Jr.; a son, Rep. Bobby L. Glover and a daughter-in-law, Helen Baldwin Glover, all of Carlisle. Also, she is survived by seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; and a host of beloved relatives and friends and the many residents and fellow workers whom she loved as her family.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at First Baptist Church in Carlisle. Rev. David Lee officiated.

Pallbearers were John H. Pack, Ray Glover, Johnny Hart, Johnny Smith, Billy Joe Shoup and Hardy Butler.

Honorary pallbearers were Marion Partain, Wils Simmons, Carrol Young, Gaines Young, Pat Cook, Mon Cochran and Tom Clement.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Carlisle.

W.H. Glover Jr.

W.H. Glover Jr., 94, of Carlisle, departed this life to be with the Lord and his wife of 74 1/2 years on Monday, Oct. 28, 2002.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the First United Methodist Men’s Bible Class, all of Carlisle, Ark., and was responsible in establishing the Gideon Camp for Lonoke County.

He and his father were owners and operators of Glover Cotton Gin Co. in five locations, including Carlisle and Lonoke. He was also a building contractor. At a later date, he and his wife were involved in the skating rink business at numerous locations in Arkansas.

After semi-retiring, he took on the responsibility of keeping up the maintenance of Chambers Nursing Home Inc. of Carlisle, owned by his mother-in-law, Irene Chambers, and administered by his wife, Hazel J. Glover.

A native of Lonoke County, born north of Lonoke, Ark., in the Sand Hills, he attended the Fairview and Carlisle Public Schools and was active and involved in all sports.

On May 28, 1928, he was united in marriage to Hazel J. Glover, and was previously recognized by President Bill Clinton in the year of 2000 for this milestone in their life together. They have just recently celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary.

After retiring, the highlight of their life was sitting at their old homeplace on the front porch visiting with friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Hiram Glover Sr. and Essie Flynt Glover; three sisters, Ala Mae Baldwin, Susie Young Dragoo and Odell Veaches; and a son, Bill Glover of Carlisle. His wife, Hazel J. Glover, of whom he recently celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary, went to be with the Lord four days before his departure.

Survivors include a son, Rep. Bobby L. Glover, and a daughter-in-law, Helen Baldwin Glover of Carlisle; a brother, Wayne Glover of Carlisle; two nieces, Sue Baldwin Lackie of North Little Rock and Anita Glover Hardke of Hazen; two nephews, Jim Young of Conway and Larry Wayne Glover of Florida; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of beloved relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 31, at the First Baptist Church of Carlisle. Rev. David Lee will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Ray Glover, Johnny Hart, Wils Simmons, Johnny Smith, Don Young and Jim Young.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Clement, Mon Cochran, Joe Cordell, James Dowdy, James Flynt, Jimmy Glover and Marion Partain.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Oct. 30, at Westbrook Funeral Home in Hazen.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Carlisle or Gideon International, P.O. Box 751, Lonoke, Ark. 72086.

Julius Odean Owen

Julius Odean Owen of Cabot, Arkansas, born February 4, 1928 in England, Arkansas, the son of Julius Isaac and Cecil Maxine Owen. He passed from this life on Saturday, October 26, 2002, at the age of 74 years. Mr. Owen was a member of the Cabot United Methodist Church for over 60 years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Julius Owen. He is survived by his mother, Cecil Owen of Cabot, AR; one brother, Joe Owen of Cabot, AR; one sister, Barbara Garza of Cabot, AR; four nieces, Carol Harper of Stuart, FL, Tanya Owen of North Little Rock, AR, Sherrie Bogy of England, AR, Brenda Hildebrandt of Cabot, AR; two great-nieces, Kristi Burgess and Stephanie Burgess; three great-nephews, David Harper, Daniel Harper and Ryne Pomtree.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Cabot Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Camilla Hempstead officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
