Kenneth Walter Hohlfeldt, 82, formerly of Lake Almanor, died Nov. 30, 2001, in Coolidge, Ariz. He was born May 28, 1919, in Chicago, Ill. Hohlfeldt and his family lived in Downers Grove, Ill., for 15 years, then moved to Saratoga, where Hohlfeldt worked for United Technology Plantronics and Microsoft, Inc. His occupation was quality assurance engineer. He set up many projects for SpaceRockets, telephone communications for the astronauts, and Microsoft Laboratories. Hohlfeldt served in the Coast Guard during WW II for three years. He served on a troop transport, the General M.C. Meigs AP116. He was a member of the Elks for 31 years. He also belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Coast Guard Combat Veterans Association, and was a 52-year member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. He moved to Lake Almanor in 1983. Hohlfeldt loved golf, bowling and travel. In 1985, he built a large building on his property to house his hobby, model railroading. He was always smiling and telling jokes. Hohlfeldt was preceded in death by his son, Kenn, in 1986. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Kay; and son, Keith, of North Carolina. A memorial service will be held as soon as his wife returns from Arizona in the spring. Ruth Allean Wade, 68, of Reno, Nev., died Jan. 28, 2002, at her residence. She is survived by her husband, John Wade, of Reno; daughter, Rhonda Wade, of Portola; sons, John Wade Jr., of Pa, and Brian Wade, of Carson City, Nev.; brothers, Horace Chambers, of Marysville, and William Chambers, of Los Angeles; sister, Dorothy Smith, of Kansas City, Mo.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. No services are planned.
Florence Hoecker Coursen, 82, died at Harthstone Convalescent Hospital in Sparks, Nev., Friday, Jan. 18, 2002. She was born Dec. 29, 1919, in Trenton, N.J. She was a resident of Chester, Calif., for more than 20 years. She, along with her husband moved to Sparks, two and a half years ago to be closer to their daughter. A longtime member of the Westwood Chapter 377 of the Order of Eastern Star, she served the lodge as a Star Point for a number of years. A member of the National Audubon Society, she loved to study nature and spend time in the outdoors along with playing cards and sewing. Florence is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, William of Sparks; son, Jack of Darian, Conn.; daughters, Bonnie Robertson of Reno, Nev., Suzi Roberts of Dallas, Texas and Lori Coursen of Minneapolis, Minn.; sister, Grace Naffzager of Visalia, Calif.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory in Quincy, Calif., a celebration of her life conducted by the Westwood Chapter 377 of the Order of Eastern Star was held Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the Westwood Masonic Lodge in Westwood, Calif. Lorene M. Kirkland, 86, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Lassen Community Hospital. She was born in Seneca, Mo., July 14, 1915, and had moved to Northern California at the age of 17. She had lived in Susanville for the last 22 years. She is survived by Garry Morrison, long-time companion of 23 years; sons, Doug and Keith Kirkland and daughter Sandy. The family is planning a private memorial service at a later date.
Kathryn Ann Swanson, 66, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno, Nev. She was born in Plattsburg, Mo., Aug., 24, 1935, and had been a resident of Lassen County since 1979. She is survived by her husband Harold C. Swanson of Janesville, Calif.; sons, Andrew Mark Carter of San Jose, Calif., Casey Joe Carter of Westwood, Calif.; sister, Betty Pearson of St. Joseph, Mo.; three grandchildren; two nieces; two aunts and a cousin. Origene Desir "Gene" Routhier, 87, died Sunday morning, Jan. 6, 2002, at Seneca District Hospital in Chester. He was born Dec. 17, 1914, in St. Leon, Manitoba, Canada. He spent his youth in Canada, where he graduated from the Catholic Church's parochial school system. Gene immigrated to the United States at the age of 14, moving to Southern California, where he worked in the ceramic tile trade. In 1945, he moved to Chester and went to work as a millright for Collins Pine Co., retiring after 30 years. Gene was a longtime member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Chester, along with the Lumber and Production Workers Union Local 3074. A talented craftsman, Gene continued to work as a professional tiler after moving to Chester. His work can be seen throughout Chester High School and in numerous commercial and residential buildings throughout Plumas and Lassen counties. He also worked as a maintenance technician for the Seneca Healthcare District, from the hospital's inception to 1965. Gene was an avid fisherman and also enjoyed hunting. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, in 1970, and his son, Wayne Burns, in 1982. Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Virginia "Ginger" Routhier, of Chester; sons, Richard Routhier, of Bellflower, Ron Myers, of Chico, Steven "Butch" Myers, of Chester, and Jeff Myers, of Cohassett; daughters, Carol Walker, of Bakersfield, Marie White and Lynn Moore, of Chester, Betty Harwick, of Northridge, Christine Smith, of Durham, and Vickie Newlin, of Chico; 32 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren. A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Thursday, Jan. 10, at Christ the King Catholic Church, followed by burial in the Chester District Cemetery. Personal memorials may be left online at . Former Portola resident Thelma Riehm, 82, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, in Yuba City, of Alzheimer's disease. Thelma was born June 18, 1919 in Sweet Home, Ore., to William Ernest Davis and Crystal Chloe Hansen, the fifth of nine children. She lived in Siskiyou County from 1923 to 1977, and in Portola from 1977 to 1997, when she moved to Yuba City. Thelma was a homemaker and a former worthy matron of Beckwith Star Lodge No. 234 Order of Eastern Star. Her hobbies included bowling, crossword puzzles and her dogs. She was predeceased by her husband, former Portola Mayor Rex Riehm, and by her daughter, Marilyn Killingbeck. Survivors include Thelma's sons, Jack Betschart, of Marysville, Larry Betschart, of Monroe, Wash., and Fred Betschart, of Anderson; daughter, Toni Willis, of Woodburn, Ore.; stepchildren, Liz Smith, of North San Juan, and Jack Riehm, of Lovelock, Nev.; brothers, Ray Davis, of Medford, Ore., and Glen Davis, of Parma, Idaho; sister, Mary Cool, of Arcata; caregiver, Lori Kelley of Yuba City; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. A memorial service was held Thursday, Jan. 15, at Allen & Dahl Memorial Chapel in Anderson. Her brother, Glen Davis, and her niece, Crystal Dodd, co-officiated. Kenneth Harris, 59, of Chico and Bucks Lake, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, in Chula Vista from cancer. He was born Aug. 24, 1942, in Napa to Elizabeth Fair and Eugene Harris. He attended Durham High School, Chico State University and the University of St. Louis School of Dentistry. Harris served with the Navy Dental Corps. He married Terry Berge in 1962 at the Aldersgate Methodist Church. Harris worked as a dentist in Chico for 30 years. He was a member of the Northern California Dental Society, the Cal Sierra 4x4, the California Nevada Snowmobile Association, the Butte Meadows Hillsliders and the Bucks Lake Snow Drifters. Harris enjoyed snowmobiling, and was involved at the state level to keep public lands accessible for multiple uses. He enjoyed spending time with his family at his Bucks Lake cabin. Survivors include his wife, Terry of Chico; two sons, Todd and Brandon, both of Chico; a daughter, Jamie McDonald of Willows; father and stepmother, Eugene and June Harris of Durham; stepfather, Wendel Fair of Sacramento; brothers, David Fair of Sacramento, and Mark Harris of Chico; sisters, Shannon Harris of Petaluma, and Lori Allen of Durham; and three grandchildren. A celebration of Harris's life was held Monday, April 8, at the Community Center in Chico. Memorial contributions may be made to Phoenix Providing Hope for Children or the California Nevada Snowmobiling Association ALS Charity in care of Brusie Funeral Home, which handled the arrangements.
Margaret Ione Poore, 92, died Wednesday morning, April 3, 2002, at Plumas District Hospital in Quincy. She was born July 30, 1909 in Red Bank, a small ranching community outside Red Bluff. She was raised in the Red Bluff area and was a 1926 graduate of Red Bluff High School. A resident of Quincy, for the past 51 years, Poore moved there in 1951. Poore had worked as a retail sales clerk for over 30 years at the former Western Auto Store, Quincy Florist, Quincy Hardware and retired from American Valley Lumber. She was a member of both the Pioneer Elementary School and Quincy Junior/Senior High School PTAs. She served as an organizer, administrator and coach of the Quincy Little League for many years. Poore remained active into her mid 80s as a member of the Quincy Senior Citizens, where she prepared meals for the Senior Nutrition Program, the Quincy Senior Gleaners, and worked as a volunteer with the Community Assistance Network. She was a gifted cook, remembered for her canning and candy making, and she enjoyed gardening and watching all types of sports on TV. Poore was preceded in death by her husband, Jess, in 1976, and her brother, Lloyd. Survivors include her sons, Loren B. Poore of Rocklin, Samuel J. Poore of Quincy, and Robert Lee Poore of Altaville; six grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory in Quincy, private family graveside services will be held in the Quincy East Lawn Cemetery. Irma Mae Gregory, 80, died March 14, 2002, at Havasu Regional Medical Care Center in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. She was born May 4, 1921, in Turlock, and grew up in the central valley. In 1940, she married Harry Gregory, and they relocated to San Jose. Gregory worked for Wool's Packing Company for 35 years, retiring as Head Floor Lady when they closed the San Jose plant. When Harry retired in 1967, the couple moved to Blairsden. Harry died in 1976. Irma relocated to Lake Havasu City, Ariz., in 2000 for health reasons. After retiring, she became very active in volunteer organizations, including the Eastern Plumas Health Care Auxiliary, where she was a past president and day chairman of Nifty Thrifty for 15 years. She had been: a 25-year member of the Rebekahs, a Lady Elk, a member of the Plumas Eureka Fire Auxiliary, a board member on the Commission of Aging, a member of Senior Citizens, and a volunteer for the Grandparents and Books program at the Portola Library. Gregory loved people, traveling, playing cards and fishing. For a few years, she traveled with and enjoyed the companionship of Jack Lavagetto, who died two years ago. Survivors include her daughter, Karron Ames; brothers, Robert Erway and Gene Lewis; sisters, Wilma Hickox and Audra Lewis; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held April 20 at 1 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, three miles west of Portola on Highway 70.
