Corbin-Lee Wayne Jones, 13, died Dec. 25, 2001, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. He was born May 4, 1988, in Susanville, Calif. He came to Alaska on Sept. 1, 1991, and resided in Big Lake. He had attended school at Big Lake Elementary, Wasilla Middle School and Houston Jr./Sr. High School. He had completed the seventh grade. His hobbies and special interests were football, basketball, riding his 4-wheeler, fishing and hunting, and spending time with family and friends. Corbin was adventurous and loved to travel and visit his family and friends. He loved to play football and aspired to be a professional football player. He was preceded in death by his father, Eddy Lee Jones, and his grandfather, George Tatro. Surviving are his mother, Traci K. Jones, and her partner, Jay McDaniel of Big Lake; grandparents, Carl and Donna Chitwood of Bakersfield, Calif., Newman and Ann Jones of Susanville, Calif., and Tom Dawson of Topok, Ariz.; great-grandmother, Christine Tatro of Bakersfield, Calif.; aunts, Rochelle Castro, Kim Chitwood, Deni Chitwood, April Benak, and Vicky Bishop; uncle, Greg Jones; and cousins, Christine Haney, Ashley Castillo, Jacob Benak, Andrew Robinson, Anthony Robinson, Jenny Lough, Travis Jones and Warren Jones. Arrangements were made by Valley Funeral Home and Crematory of Wasilla. A memorial service was held in Big Lake.
Dean Lloyd Rupert, 40, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento, Calif. He was born in Susanville on Aug. 3, 1961, and raised in Herlong. He joined the U.S. Army in 1981 but was released shortly thereafter due to kidney failure. He moved to Sacramento where he worked for Hewlett Packard for a year and then for Costco. He is survived by his wife, Linda; step-son, Darren Gayald; step-daughter Tammy; three grandchildren; sister, Claudia of Vacaville, Calif.; parents, Pete and Jean Rupert of Eagle Lake - Susanville and numerous relatives and friends. A memorial was held in his honor on Jan. 5 in Fair Oaks, Calif.
Clare Sadie Dieter, 97, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at a Chico hospital. She was born Jan. 13, 1904, in Yakima, Wash., to Owen and Sarah Smith. At an early age her family moved to the Honey Lake Valley area were she was raised. She married Melvin Dieter Feb. 20, 1926, in Susanville and they moved to Chico in 1956. She is survived by her son, George Dieter of Chico; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in September 2001. Services were held at the Walton's Colonial Chapel in Susanville Thursday, Jan. 10, with burial following at the Janesville Cemetery.
Carolyn J. Garcia, 56, died at the Lassen Community Annex on Friday, Dec. 28, 2001. She was born in Vacaville, Calif., Oct. 22, 1945, and had been a Lassen County resident for the past four years. She had been employed by the Sierra Army Depot as a demolition worker. She is survived by her son, Scott Mecredy of Doyle; daughter, Rosalie Keck also of Doyle; brother, Tom Keck; sister, Valmalee Keck; seven grandsons and one granddaughter. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Hazel Bradford Arnett, 82, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Anderson Rehab Specialties Inn in Anderson, Calif. She was born Nov. 14, 1919, in Eureka, Calif., her family moved to Westwood when she was 13 years old and then to Susanville. She lived in Susanville most of her life. She and her husband, Lloyd Arnett, lived in Anderson, during the .60s and '70s, and returned to retire in Susanville in 1977. She worked in the lumber mills and J.C. Penney in Susanville during the 1940s and 1950s. She did volunteer work with the March of Dimes during this time. She is survived by son, Lloyd Arnett Jr. of Cottonwood, and Roy Dale Arnett of Lancaster; brothers, Dayton Bradford of Susanville, and Eugene Bradford of Yuba City; Len Cerney of Cottonwood; grandsons, Scott and Dana Arnett of Reno; Loretta Ginochio of Reno; Lois Murillo of Susanville, Millicent Lutchansky of Sacramento. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. Services were held at the Janesville Cemetery
on Saturday, Jan. 12. Memorial contributions can be made to the local Arthritis Associations.
Jacquelyn "Jacquie" Ellena, 66, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002. She was born Jan. 12, 1935, to John Kenneth and Georgene Dumbauld in Columbus, Ohio. She married Jack Ellena on Oct. 16, 1954, in Westwood Village, Los Angeles, Calif. She completed her bachelor of arts degree at California State University Northridge where she received her teaching credential and Reading Specialist Certificate. During her college years she was "Miss Illinois" and a finalist in the 1952 Miss America pageant. In 1953 she became the "College Queen of America." She began teaching at the Johnstonville School in 1964 helping design and furnish their kindergarten building. She later taught the middle grades at Diamond View School. In 1956 she and her husband founded the Mountain Meadow Ranch Summer Camp, which they owned and operated for 40 years before turning it over to their children. They also were co-founders and owners of Triple E Corporation, building and operating motels in Susanville, Alturas, and Carson City, Nev. While living in Susanville, she was a past president of the Susanville Monticola Club, a member of the Susanville Soroptimist Club, the Lassen County Cowbells, the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and for many years a member of the Susanville Methodist Church. In the last 12 years, she and her husband have spent each winter in the Palm Desert area where she was a volunteer at the McCallum Theater and the Living Desert Museum. She danced with the Ironwood Tappers, and was a member of the Desert Prime Time Dancers. She is survived by her husband Jack, her son Jack Jr. of Susanville; daughters, Jill Farnworth of Wenatchee, Wash., and Julie Deal of Susanville; brothers, William Dumbauld of Los Alamitos and John Dumbauld of Kona, Hawaii; sister, Connie Carroll of Woodland; and eight grandchildren. She was preceeded in death by infant twin daughters Janet and Joy who died when they were only days old. Celebration of life services will be held at the Susanville Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002. Reception to follow at the Fellowship Hall.
Richard Arthur Mathews, 70, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, after a brief illness. He was born Jan. 7, 1931, to Llewellyn Mathews and Beatrice Cathernie Piedmont Mathews in Susanville, Calif. He served in the U.S. Navy for 33 years, retiring from Moffett Field as the executive officer from 1979-1982. He moved to Santa Rosa where he owned a property management business. He was active in the Navy League, the Santa Rosa Kiwanis Club, the Redwood Empire Breakfast Club, the New Horizons Band, and Christ Church Methodist. He is survived by wife, Susan; mother, Beatrice Mathews; sister, Catherine Wheeler of Susanville, son, Douglas Mathews of Altadena, Calif.; daughters, Rebecca Newkirk of Pacifica, Calif., and Rachel Mathews of Orange, Calif.; and two grandchildren. Memorial services were held today Tuesday, Jan. 15, in Santa Rosa, Calif.
James Williams Burton, 51, died Dec. 16, 2001, in Santa Maria. He was born Nov. 10, 1950, in Portola to James T. and Faye Williams Burton. Burton was raised in Portola and graduated from Portola High School. He attended the federal law enforcement training center in Glencoe, Ga. He retired from the U.S.D.A., having served as a Forest Service law enforcement agent in the Los Padres National Forest in Santa Barbara County. Burton was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son, Morgan Burton, and daughter, Patricia Burton, of Santa Barbara; and brother, Thomas Burton, of Portola. Graveside inurnment has been scheduled for a later date. Memorial donations in Burton's memory may be made to the American Lung Association, 909 12th St., Sacramento, CA 95814.
Sylvia E. Eastham, 93, died at her daughter's home in Napa Jan. 14, 2002. She was a longtime resident of Lake Almanor Country Club and founder of the Lake Almanor Audubon Society. Mrs. Eastham received a degree in public health nursing from the University of Washington in 1930. She had a distinguished and varied career in nursing, finally retiring from the Santa Clara School District in 1970. She had a great love of people, animals and birds, sharing this with Audubon Society members and other friends. Mrs. Eastham was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, in 1973. Survivors included her daughters, Elloriane Isaac, of Newark, and Marilyn Shaul, of Napa; son, Walter T. Eastham, of Antioch; sister, Ellen Powell, of Denver, Colo.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Edlef "Hatcher" Orren Pyle, 89, died on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003. He was born in Vacaville on Feb. 16, 1913 and was a resident of Lassen County for the past four months, but spent all of his life in Vacaville, where he was a volunteer fireman and a high school athletic supporter. He was an avid hunter and loved to come to Lassen County with his brothers and nephews to hunt and fish. His life work was as a welder, working for Basic Welding for 40 years. He is survived by brother, Louis of Susanville; sisters-in-law Bernice Pyle of Susanville and Jean Pyle of Tennessee; nephews, Bill of Hawaii, Charles of Arizona, Milton Jr. of Washington, Cabot of Tennessee and Jerry, Tom and Bob, all of Susanville and nieces, Shirley Measures of Sacramento, Linda Duncan of Sacramento and Cynthia Pyle of Tennessee. Graveside services were held at Elmira Cemetery
in Vacaville on Monday, Feb. 10.
Antonia "Toni" Macias, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, died at her home on Jan. 29, 2003. Born on Dec. 18, 1911, she had been a resident of Sparks, coming from Purandiro, Michocan, Mexican, at the age of six. She retired after 34 years with Southern Pacific Railroad. She was an avid bowler. She was a member of Sociedad Honorifica Mexicana and the Ladies Eagles Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by Rafael Rodriguez, Calixto Macias; daughter, Esperanza Rodriguez and grandson, Bradley Zinn. She is survived by daughter, Lupe Zinn of Susanville; son, Victor Macias of Reno; grandchildren, Carol Baublit and Dan Zinn of Susanville, Gary Zinn and Robert Zinn of Paradise, Karen Simon and Rita Phillips of Sparks, 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. A remembrance of her life was held on Sunday, Feb. 2, at Ross, Burke and Knobel Mortuary Chapel. A memorial mass was held on Feb. 3 at the Immaculate Conception Church. A private interment will be held at Our Mother of Sorrows.
Merlin Beran "Lefty" Carsley, 75, died Feb. 3, 2003, at his residence on the Lake Almanor Peninsula. Merlin was born to Harry and Clara Beran Carsley in Exeland, Wisc. He was raised in Lake Mills, Wisc., and was a 1945 graduate of Lake Mills High School. Following his graduation, he went on to serve his country as a member of the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1947. He began a career in the graphic arts industry as an apprentice following his discharge, and worked as a printing pressman until his retirement in 1992. Lefty moved with his family from Wisconsin to San Lorenzo in 1956, residing there for 27 years, then moved to Sacramento for 10 years. It was during this time he built his residence on the Lake Almanor Peninsula. He and his wife, Georgiann, moved to the Lake Almanor Peninsula following his retirement. He was a master printer and a true jack of all trades. He could build a house, or rebuild an automobile engine. He was a Ford Motor products aficionado who enjoyed the outdoors through fishing. He also enjoyed bowling and had recently taken up model aircraft building again. He was a longtime member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Chester. Lefty is survived by his wife of 50 years, Georgiann of Lake Almanor Peninsula; his sons, Jeffrey of Fairfield, Jay of Dublin, Joel of San Leandro, and James of Grants Pass, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; and his sister, Lois Schmidt of West Bend, Wisc.
