Erma Bowers

Erma V. Bowers, 91, died Thursday, April 19 at Wagner Heights Rehabilitation in Stockton.

A native of Almena, Kan., Mrs. Bowers was a member of First Baptist Church of Vallejo and Grandmothers Club of Vallejo. She was employed as a manager in food service for the Vallejo Unified School District for 18 years. Mrs. Bowers enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, painting, and traveling.

Survivors include children, Patricia Nelson of Long Beach, Kay Sundbeck of Stockton, and Eddie Jr. of Oroville; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Madelino Cochran of Corvellos, Oreg., Ray Van Patten of Ashland, Oreg., and Melvin Van Patten of Milpitas.

Graveside service, 10 a.m. today at Skyview Memorial Lawn, Vallejo. Burial in Skyview Memorial Lawn. Arrangements by DeYoung Memorial Chapel, Stockton.

Fernando Abellera Sr.

(Oct. 10, 1918 - June 11, 2001)

Fernando D. Abellera Sr., 82, died Monday at home following a long illness.

Mr. Abellera was born in Sison, Pangasinan, Philippines and was a Vallejo resident for three months, and prior Watsonville resident for 40 years. He was a farm worker for West Coast Farms for 38 years and retired in 1980. Mr. Abellera was a share cropper for Driscoll Strawberries in Watsonville for five years and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion in Stockton and enjoyed gardening and fishing.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Jose, Teofilo, and Alfredo.

Survivors include wife, Rosalinda of Vallejo; daughters, Sharon (Olin) Hendricks of Watsonville and Aimee (Joven Zamora) of Vallejo; sons, Fernando, Charles, and Jose (Tracy) all of Watsonville, and Paul of Vallejo; sisters, Felicidad Bagadyong and Brigida Gundran, both of the Philippines; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., with rosary at 4 p.m., both Saturday at Skyview Funeral Chapel, Vallejo. Burial in Sison Memorial Park, Sison, Pangasinan, Philippines.

Bernice Clark

(March 20, 1916 -- Feb. 10, 2002)

Bernice E. "Bea" Clark, 85, of Vacaville, died Friday in a Vallejo hospital after a long illness.

Mrs. Clark was born in Eckelson, N.D., and was a former resident of Vallejo before moving to Vacaville. She was a data processor for the U.S. Government on Mare Island Naval Shipyard for 25 years and retired in 1977.

Survivors are daughter, Barbara (Walter) Beck of Gerber; son, Donald (Jocelyn) of Tucson; sister, Genevieve Gullickson of Valley City, N.D.; grandchildren, Cindy Manica of Dixon, Jeffrey Beck of Sacramento, and Renee of Tucson; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial at 1 p.m. Thursday in the mausoleum chapel at All Souls Catholic Cemetery, Vallejo, with Deacon Ed Lazarek of St. Dominic's Church officiating. Inurnment follows in All Souls Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements by Twin Chapels Mortuary, Vallejo.

Contributions preferred to American Cancer Society.

Laurence Elrod

Nov. 14, 1920 -- May 26, 2002

Laurence A. Elrod, 81, died Sunday in the Palo Alto VA Hospital after a short illness.

He was born in Indiahoma, Okla., and had lived in Benicia since 1974.

Mr. Elrod was a graduate of Orosi High School, attended the College of Sequoia in Visalia, earned his bachelor's degree in education from Fresno State, and his master's degree from the University of Southern California.

He began his career as a teacher in Woodlake, then worked as a superintendent of schools for the Cutler-Orosi Unified School District for 28 years before coming to Benicia in the same position. He was superintendent in Benicia for five years before retiring in 1979.

Mr. Elrod was a former member of the Kiwanis Club in the Cutler-Orosi area; Benicia Rotary Club; was one of the founders of Sci-Con, an outdoor educational program; served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, where he was captain of LST 532, and participated in the D-Day invasion of Omaha Beach at Normandy.

Survivors are his wife, Lee of Benicia; daughters, Marilyn Gladwell of New Mexico; Elaine Dodge of Benicia; sons, Douglas of Clovis; and Russell of Benicia; sisters, Floreine Dougherty of Fresno; Helen Arkley of Orange Cove; Betty Casey of Stockton; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m., May 30 at Northgate Christian Fellowship, 6014 Egret Court in Benicia, with Pastor Ken Jensen officiating. Private inurnment.

Arrangements made by Passalacqua Funeral Chapel, Benicia.

Guy Turner

Sept. 7, 1925 -- Sept. 17, 2002

Guy Allen Turner, 77, died Tuesday at a local hospital after a short illness.

Born in Lyman, Utah, he was a Vallejo resident for 52 years.

Mr. Turner worked at Benicia Arsenal for 11 years, and at Mare Island Naval Shipyard for 32 years retiring in 1993. He spent 46 years in Civil Service.

He served in the U.S. Navy aboard destroyer escorts during World War II.

He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Vallejo 2nd Ward. He held numerous callings in the church including Young Men's president; Bishopric member; teacher; home teacher; and physical facilities representative of the Benicia Chapel.

Mr. Turner volunteered over 4,500 hours at Kaiser Hospital. In addition, he helped in community activities at the Vallejo Benicia Camel Barn and at the Douglas Senior Center. He also worked as an election clerk on many elections.

Mr. Turner enjoyed spending time in church activities, visits to Hawaii, crafting, canning, and spending time with family.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Rose in 1990; his parents, David Ernest and Hulda Artimisha Allen; sister and brother, Leola and Nelson; and his grandson, Scott.

Survivors are his daughters, Beverly (Craig) Turner  Jackson of Sandy, Utah; Nancy (Robert) Tuner Miller of Vallejo; sons, Bruce (Samantha) of Dickson, Tenn.; Stanley of Nederland,  Texas; Cary of Vallejo; Bevin (Valerie) of N. Salt Lake City, Utah; Richard (Laura) of Lehi, Utah; brothers, Alfonzo of Lyman, Utah; Ward of Roy, Utah; Duane of Richfield, Utah; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held 5 to 8 p.m., Sept. 20 at Skyview Garden Chapel, Vallejo. Another visitation will be held 9 to 10 a.m. Sept. 21, with a funeral following at 10 a.m. at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1125 Southampton Road, Benicia. Burial at Skyview Memorial Lawn, Vallejo.

Gussie Iahn

(Oct. 5, 1906 - March 22, 2001)

Gussie Emma Iahn, 94, died in Reno, Nev., following a long illness.

Mrs. Iahn was born in Clinton, Ark. and was a Reno, Nev., resident for seven months, a prior resident of San Leandro for three years, and a prior resident of Vallejo for 50 years. She was a homemaker, a member of Vallejo Nite Owls, and was a Vallejo Senior Citizen Volunteer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl L. in 1980.

Survivors include daughter, Patricia (Henry) Graham of Reno, Nev.; son, Richard Naylor of San Leandro; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral at 2 p.m. Friday at Skyview Garden Chapel, Vallejo, with John Warner of the Christadelphian Church of Belmont officiating. Entombment in Skyview Memorial Lawn.
