Ellison Stephens

Aug. 18, 1918 -- Sept. 15, 2002

Ellison "Steve" Stephens, 84, died suddenly Sept. 15 at Sutter Solano Medical Center-Vallejo.

Born in Waco,  Texas, he was a current resident of Vallejo.

Mr. Stephens worked as a laborer for Mare Island Naval Shipyard and for C & H Sugar Refining Co.

He was a U.S. Army and World War II veteran.

Mr. Stephens was a member of John F. Beverly Lodge No. 1268 of Vallejo; and St. John Missionary Baptist Church.

He loved fixing things; house painting, yard trimming, plumbing and electrical work.

Survivors include his sisters, Eva Turner of Chicago, Il.; Gladys  Washington of Waco,  Texas; brothers, Harvey (Valor) Herring of Fairfield; Clyde (Emma) of Vallejo; Hubert "Buster Henry"; Fred Herring; Rugus Herring; and Miles Herring, Jr., all of Waco,  Texas.

Visitation, 2 to 8 p.m. Sept. 25 with 7 p.m. quiet hour at Cooley and Riolo Mortuary, Vallejo. Funeral services will be held, 11 a.m. Sept 26 at Prince of Peace Baptist Church with the Rev. A. Anderson officiating. Burial at San Joaquin National Cemetery, Gustine.

Carlton Foster

May 1, 1917 -- March 21, 2003

Carlton "Andy" A. Foster, 85, of Benicia died March 21 at his home after a brief illness.

Mr. Foster was born in Lynn, Mass., and lived in Benicia for over 60 years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was a merchant marine from 1941 to 1944.

He worked as a warehouse supervisor at Benicia Arsenal for more than 20 years before retiring in 1964.

Mr. Foster was a certified Christian Science Practitioner, 50-year member and past Master of Benicia Lodge No. 5 F&AM, member of Eastern Star, member of Christian Science Mother Church of Boston, Mass. Mr. Foster was an avid horticulturist and Master Fruit Tree Grafter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene Foster, in 1992.

Survivors include his daughter, Sally Harmon of Napa; son, Frederic of Vallejo; and four grandchildren.

At his request no services will be held. His ashes will be scattered at sea in the Carquinez Strait.

Arrangements made under the direction of Passalacqua Funeral Chapel, Benicia.

Alson Smith

March 7, 1920 -- July 20, 2002

Alson Glenn Smith, 82, died Sunday at his home in Napa.

Mr. Smith, also known as "Smitty," was a native Vallejoan who was reared and educated in Vallejo before he moved to Napa in 1946.

He worked for the city of Napa for 22 years as a building inspector before retiring as a senior building inspector.

He was a member of Napa Parlor 62; Native Sons of the Golden West; the Jeans and Janes Square Dance Club; and the Redwood Building Association.

He is survived by his wife LaVon of Napa; his daughters, Florence Rose of Alturas; Donna Johns of Las Vegas, Nev.; and three grandsons, Matt, David and Chris Johns of Las Vegas, Nev.

At Mr. Smith's request, no funeral services will be held.

Arrangements and cremation are under the direction of Richard Pierce Funeral Service. Private interment will be at Tulocay Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Boys' and Girls' Club of Napa Valley, 1515 Pueblo Avenue, Napa, CA 94558 or Kaiser Hospice, 975 Sereno Drive, Vallejo, CA 94589 or The American Cancer Society, 1031  Jefferson St., Napa, CA 94559.

Earle Hanson

July 16, 1907 -- Feb. 12, 2003

Earle M. Hanson, 95, died Feb. 12 at a nursing home in Concord after a short illness.

He was born in Vallejo and was a Pleasant Hill resident.

After graduating from Vallejo High School in January 1927, he attended Heald Business College in San Francisco, where he graduated in October 1928. He went to work for the Dollar Steamship Lines in February 1929 and worked there until March 1931. In June 1931 he entered the insurance business in Vallejo.

Earle and Margaret Madren were married in Vallejo on June 20, 1932. He operated his own agency, buying out several other agencies in his career. He retired from the insurance business in 1967.

In 1978, the Hansons moved to Vineyard Valley in Saint Helena and in 1998 they moved to Pleasant Hill. He was a longtime member of Naval Lodge No. 87 F&AM, the Vallejo Elks and Kiwannis Clubs. Mr. Hanson was a past president of the Vallejo Association of Insurance Agents, the Solano County Association of Insurance Agents and the Vallejo Numismatic Society.

He enjoyed an extensive coin collection, which he accumulated over the past 75 years, he also enjoyed fishing in the Lake Tahoe area.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Pleasant Hill; daughter, Gail (Charles) Ward of Colfax; sons, Robert (Carol) of San Jose and Wade (Cathy) of Martinez; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Arrangements made by the Neptune Society.

David Gregory

Aug. 19, 1929 -- Feb. 7, 2003

David Earl Gregory, 73, died Feb. 7.

He was born in Springville, Iowa, and was San Diego resident.

Mr. Gregory was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict, he later retired from civil service.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia and daughter, Luanne James of San Diego; son, Edward also of San Diego; his sister, Cora Weaver of Vallejo and two grandchildren.

Inurnment will be held 10 a.m. Feb. 24 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.

Donations may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 3625, South Dakota 92163-1625.
