John Garavaglia

April 23, 1916 -- May 27, 2003

John Joseph Garavaglia, 87, died Tuesday in Petaluma after a long illness.

Mr. Garavaglia was born in Utah, lived in Vallejo for two years and was a Crockett resident for 66 years.

He was employed as a sanitation supervisor for C&H Sugar Refinery for 42 years. Mr. Garavaglia was also a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of the Vallejo Elks Club 559; Crockett Lions Club; ICF San Carlo Branch 14, Crockett; and St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Crockett. He was a board member of John Swett Unified School District for 24 years.

He enjoyed golfing, public speaking and playing the organ and other musical instruments.

Survivors include his wife, Nelda of Petaluma; daughter, Christine McMillan of Murietta; son, Paul of Sebastapol; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be at noon May 30 with a 1 p.m. service at Hosselkus Chapel in Crockett, with the Rev. Ciaron Dillon officiating. Burial will follow.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Greater San Francisco Bay Area, 330 Distel Circle, Suite A, Los Altos, CA 94022.

Edna Ellis

Aug. 18, 1915 -- April 18, 2003

Edna Claudine Ellis, 87, died April 18.

She was born in Vallejo to Claud M. Ellis and Edna Bessie Wolfe Ellis. She was the granddaughter of pioneer Vallejoans, Hiram and Martha Wolfe, who settled in Vallejo in 1886. Her parents were founders of the Ellis Creamery in Vallejo.

She was a 1934 graduate of Vallejo High School.

During World War II, she worked as a gardener at Benicia Arsenal.

Ms. Ellis was a member of Vallejo First Baptist Church until 1948, when her family moved to Napa and affiliated with Napa First Baptist Church.

She was a 50-year member of Silver Star Chapter No. 3, Order of Eastern Star.

She was an avid reader and spent much of her time studying her Bible. She enjoyed participating with friends in church activities, including Bible study classes and Women's Circle meetings. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and loved to play cards and other games. Family gatherings were always special to her.

Survivors include her sisters, Martha Ellis Stutzman of Napa and Helen Ellis Freedland of Loomis; brother, Dr. Harlan Ellis of Visalia; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at Napa First Baptist Church, 2590 First St., Napa.

A private burial will take place a the family plot at Sunrise Memorial Cemetery in Vallejo.

Arrangements were made under the direction of Richard Pierce Funeral Services, 1660 Silverado Trail, Napa.

Estell Murray

Aug. 17, 1913 -- February 13, 2003

Estell Murray, 89, died February 13 at the home of her care provider, Vorine Dykes, following a long illness.

Mrs. Murray was a native of Stamps, Arkansas and moved to Vallejo in 1939 where she resided for 63 years.

Mrs. Murray was employed at Mare Island Naval Shipyard during World War II. She was the proprietor of Murray's Dry Cleaners for many years. Her last employment was at Sneed's Care Home for the disabled adults, retiring in 1985.

She was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed sewing and gardening.

Mrs. Murray was a member of Liberty Baptist church, the Twelve Keys Singers and a former member of Harmony Court No. 18 Heroines of Jerico.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Dunbar and Clyde Henderson Dunbar; her husband, Lloyd Murray in 1988.

She is survived by her conservator, Robbye Henderson of Vallejo, who provided for her care. She is also survived by several cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 19 at Wiggins-Knipp Funeral Home, Vallejo with Elder Clarence Murdock of Independent Community church of Oakland officiating. Private inurnment.

Martha Sandoval

Nov. 24, 1931 -- Nov. 14, 2002

Martha Anne Sandoval, 70, of American Canyon, died Nov. 14 at Kaiser Hospital, Vallejo, following a brief illness.

Born in Fort Totten, N.Y., Mrs. Sandoval had lived in American Canyon for the past 50 years. She was a member of Holy Family Parish in American Canyon and St. Vincent's Catholic, Church.

Services: Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the church, with a visitation from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 18 at Twin Chapels Mortuary, Vallejo. Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 in the funeral home. Burial: All Souls Catholic Cemetery, Vallejo.

Survivors: husband Vincent M. Sandoval of American Canyon; children Gloria, Arleen, Bruce, Rodger and Ken Sandoval, all of the Bay Area; sisters Teresa Jones, Mary Wehosky; brother Michael Goulla; five grandchildren.

Linda Glover

May 22, 1955 -- Nov. 21, 2002

Linda Sue Glover, 47, died Nov. 21 at her home in Vacaville after a long illness.

Mrs. Glover was born in Vallejo and resided in Vacaville/Solano County for the past 27 years.

She was a 1973 graduate of Vintage High School in Napa. Mrs. Glover was a self-employed computer Web designer last employed with Intel.

She was formerly active in the PTA and Little League; she taught Sunday school for the past five years at Valley Church. She also did graphic art work for the church for the past six years.

Survivors include her husband of 26 years, Bill of Vacaville; sons, Scott and Paul both of Vacaville; father, Robert Pogue of Vallejo; brother, Robert Pogue, Jr., of New York State; and her sister, Sandra Gale of Sand Point, Idaho.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Nov. 25 at Nadeau Family Funeral Home, 180 E. Monte Vista Ave., Vacaville. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., Nov. 26 at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery, followed by a celebration of life service at 3:30 p.m., at Valley Church in Vacaville, with Pastor Raleigh Galgan presiding.

James Howell

Dec. 17, 1927 -- Sept. 22, 2002

James "Jim" Howell, 74, died Sept. 22 at Springs Road Living Center-Vallejo after a long illness.

Born in San Francisco, he was a Vallejo resident for the past two years.

Mr. Howell worked for the U.S. Postal Service for five years. He was a salesman for Gerber Products for 32 years. He retired in 1998.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Howell was a member of the QT Club of San Jose; was a 42-year member of the San Mateo Elk's Club and a two-year member of the Vallejo Elk's Club.

He enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Kay of Vallejo; daughters, Candy (Woody Carlson) Howell of Galt; Debbie (Tim) Lopez of San Jose; Janne (John) Corda of Tahoe City; Susie (Ed) Shaver of Reno; sister, Joan (Ralph) Medeffesser of San Jose and eight grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held, 2 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Vallejo Elk's Club.

Contributions are preferred to the charity of the donor's choice.

Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Twin Chapels Mortuary, Vallejo.
