Rafael Rubio

Mass of Christian Burial for Rafael Rubio, 46, of Fairfield, will be 1 p.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fairfield.

The Rev. Umberto Penunuri will officiate, with burial in Zacoalco de Torres, Jalisco, Mexico.

Mr. Rubio died May 8, 1998, in NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield after a short illness.

Born May 27, 1951, in Santa Clara, Jalisco, Mexico, Mr. Rubio lived in Fairfield the past seven years. He had lived in Napa for three years before that. He was a carpenter for Sunrise Construction for three years.

Mr. Rubio is survived by his wife, Lilia of Fairfield; daughters, Maria and Elisabeth, both of Fairfield; son, Emanuel of Fairfield; mother, Maria of Fairfield; sister, Fidelia of  Washington; and brothers, Pedro and Lino, both of Los Angeles, and Hilario of  Washington.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Edith, in 1987.

Visitation will be 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Thomas C. Sanfilipo

Funeral services for Thomas C. Sanfilipo, 95, of Vacaville will be 7 p.m. Tuesday in Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

There will be a private burial in Benicia.

Mr. Sanfilipo died May 8, 1998, in NorthBay Medical Center after a short illness.

Born Nov. 5, 1902, in Benicia, Mr. Sanfilipo lived in Vacaville the past three years.

Mr. Sanfilipo and his two brothers had owned and operated the Yacht Harbor Club in San Francisco for 20 years. He retired about 40 years ago.

Mr. Sanfilipo was a national Hall of Fame skeet shooter, as well as a member of the California Skeet Shooters Hall of Fame. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. Mr. Sanfilipo also was a member of the Richmond Gun & Rod Club and the Pacific Rod & Gun Club. He also was a member of the American Bowlers Association and bowled in many leagues.

Mr. Sanfilipo is survived by nieces and nephews, and had lived with great-nephew Pete Derenale in Vacaville for the past three years.

Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Janice Lopez Bera

A memorial services for Janice Lopez Bera, 41, of Vacaville will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Trinity Baptist Church in Vacaville.

Pastor Milton Steck of Trinity Baptist Church will officiate. Inurnment is private.

Mrs. Bera died May 8, 1998, in her Vacaville home after a long illness.

Born June 20, 1956, in Fairfield, Mrs. Bera was a lifelong Vacaville and Solano County resident. Mrs. Bera was a 1974 Vacaville High School graduate. She had worked for 13 years in the family business as a barber at Barber Joe's in downtown Vacaville.

Mrs. Bera loved dining out, cooking and spending time with her family.

Mrs. Bera is survived by her husband, Steve of Vacaville; daughters, Jessica, Japhia and Jeneya, all of Vacaville; father, Joe Lopez of Vacaville; brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Genny Lopez; sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Gary Grant; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Greg and Denise Bera; and nine nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Joan Lopez.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 290 Fruitvale Road, Vacaville.

Arrangements are handled by McCune Garden Chapel in Vacaville.

Julia Ellen Cook Portz

Memorial services for Julia Ellen Cook Portz, 81, of Vacaville will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Unity Church of the Valley in Vacaville.

The Rev. Vic Jenkins will officiate. Inurnment will be private.

Born July 15, 1916, in South Plattsburg, N.Y., she was the youngest of seven children born to Merilda Cox and Sumner E. Cook.

Ms. Cook Portz died May 9, 1998, after a long battle with cancer.

Ms. Cook Portz moved to Vacaville more than 30 years ago.

She graduated from Plattsburg High School in 1935 and obtained her degree as a registered nurse from Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1940. She worked for a year in the hospital and then was employed by American Airlines as a stewardess at a time when the airline required nurses on board.

In 1943, she married Robert Oscar Behrman, and in 1945 she gave birth to her only child, Robert Oscar Behrman Jr. The family lived in Oregon, where Ms. Cook Portz was the founder of the Oregon Nurses Association and the administrator of a 17-bed hospital. She and her husband divorced in the early 1960s.

Ms. Cook Portz moved to Vacaville in the mid-1960s and married John Portz in 1969. After working for many years in hospitals and as a school nurse, she became a pioneer in holistic health. At David Grant Medical Center in the 1970s, she worked with Dr. Carl Simonton teaching meditation and visualization techniques to cancer patients.

After completing her bachelor's degree in the early 1970s, she earned a master's degree in 1976 from Sonoma State University. She taught holistic health classes for health professionals at Solano Community College, Napa College and University of California, Davis. She founded the Holistic Living Center in Vacaville and lectured widely.

She was president of the United Ostomy Association, Vacaville chapter.

Ms. Cook Portz is survived by her son, Robert Jr.; daughter-in-law, Barbara; grandchildren, Jennifer Kern and Jessica and Colin Behrman; great-grandchild, Madison Kern; husband, John; sister, Irene Trombly of Fayetteville, N.Y.; and 10 nieces and nephews.

Contributions may be made to the Unity Church of the Valley, 350 N. Orchard Ave., Vacaville 95688.

Arrangements are handled by Vaca Hills Chapel.

Jose L. Haro

A Mass of Christian Burial for Jose L. Haro, 93, of Vacaville will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church.

The Rev. Eugenio Lopez of St. Mary's Catholic Church will officiate. Interment will follow at Fairmont Memorial Park, Fairfield.

Born Dec. 26, 1904, in Sorbas, Spain, Mr. Haro died May 9, 1998, in Vacaville after a long illness.

Mr. Haro was a Vacaville resident for more than 42 years. He worked for more than 20 years for Basic Vegetable Products. He also enjoyed working in his own vegetable garden.

Mr. Haro is survived by his wife, Maria of Vacaville; son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Janet of Alamo; granddaughter, Jennifer and grandson, Jeff, both of Alamo; sister, Anna Fernandez of New Jersey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in McCune Garden Chapel, 212 Main St., Vacaville. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Joe Marshall

Funeral services for Joe Marshall, 80, of Vacaville will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at McCune Garden Chapel, 212 Main St., Vacaville.

Pastor Randall Bailey of Solid Rock Church of God in Vacaville will officiate.

Mr. Marshall died May 10, 1998, in his Vacaville home after a long illness.

Born Sept. 26, 1917, in Hudsonville,  Texas, he moved to Vacaville in 1989 from Lindsey, where he worked for the Lindsey Olive Company for 14 years.

Mr. Marshall was a longtime member of the Church of God, most recently Vacaville's Solid Rock Church of God.

He also loved baseball and in his younger years, he played for the Hudsonville Sluggers in  Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Viola Marshall of Vacaville; daughters, Wanda Gilbreath of Fair Oaks and Audrey Poplin of Vacaville; sons, Larry and David Marshall of Vacaville; sisters, A.W. Smith of Poplar and Evelyn  White of Mize, Miss.; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, James Leroy Marshall.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at McCune Garden Chapel.

Alfonso Reddic Sr.

Funeral services with full military honors for Alfonso Reddic Sr., 66, of Suisun City will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, 1850 W.  Texas St., Fairfield.

The Rev. Floyd W. Trammell of St. Luke C.M.E. Church in Daly City will officiate.

Burial will be at Fairmont Memorial Park in Fairfield.

Mr. Reddic died May 9, 1998, at NorthBay Medical Center after a short illness.

Born Sept. 15, 1931, in Henderson,  Texas, he moved to Suisun City 26 years ago. He served in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1972, retiring as a tech sergeant.

He served in the Korean War, Vietnam and the Philippines and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Presidential Citation for his service in Vietnam and the National Defense Medal.

After retiring from the Air Force, he took a job a 1973 at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, where he worked for 13 years.

Mr. Reddic also enjoyed cooking gumbo and barbeque and was a member of the George W. Posey Lodge No. 77 of Vallejo. During his later years, he spent much of his time with his granddaughter, Tyasia.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Reddic; son, Alfonso Reddic Jr. and granddaughter Tyasia, all of Suisun City; sisters, Emma Sue Cregler and Louise Cobb of Tyler,  Texas, and Ruth L. Ferguson of Kilgore,  Texas.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Emelia McCormick

Upon her request, there will be no services for Emelia McCormick, 92, of Vacaville. Inurnment will be private at the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born July 5, 1905, in Woodland, Pa., Mrs. McCormick died May 9, 1998, in Vacaville after a brief illness. She was a resident of Vacaville for 47 years.

Mrs. McCormick was a homemaker for 50 years. She was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She loved children and enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

Mrs. McCormick is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Kost of Vacaville; grandson, Edward Kost Jr., of Vacaville; granddaughter, Paula Jean Lettus of Clear Lake; great-granddaughter, Paula Jean  Woods of Tuiallup, Wash.; and two great-grandsons.

Contributions may be made to the St. Mary's Catholic Church, 350 Stinson, Vacaville 95688.

Arrangements are by McCune Garden Chapel.

Harold David Stringham

A Catholic graveside service with full military honors for Harold David Stringham Jr., 74, of Vacaville will be 1 p.m. Friday at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine.

Clergy from St. Joseph Catholic Church in Los Banos will preside.

Born Sept. 2, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Stringham had lived in Vacaville the past 33 years.

He died May 10, 1998, while vacationing in Virginia Beach, Va.

Mr. Stringham had been retired from the Air Force since March 31, 1968, having served 20 years. He also had served in the Marine Corps before his Air Force career.

He was a member of the Napa Model Railroad Club and the Sacramento Model Railroad Club, the Vacaville Veterans of Foreign War No. 7244, and the Marines Memorial Association.

Mr. Stringham is survived by his wife, Mabel of Vacaville; daughter, Linda Averbuch of Charlotte, N.C.; sisters, Jeanne Schreiner of Freeport, N.Y., and Patricia Leschinski of Merrick, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Nadeau Family Funeral Home.

Nestor M. 'Guero' Carnero

A memorial service for Nestor M. "Guero" Carnero, 78, of Oakland will be 1 p.m. today at Victory Outreach, 2573 Claybank Road in Fairfield. Inurnment will be private at Fairmont Memorial Park.

Born Nov. 10, 1919, in Marfa,  Texas, Mr. Carnero died May 9, 1998, at a veterans hospital in Martinez after a short illness. He lived in Oakland for 53 years.

Mr. Carnero was a World War II veteran of the Asiatic and Central Pacific campaign. He served from 1942 to 1945.

He worked at Todd's Shipyard in Alameda, and Morris' Shipyard in Oakland for several years. He also worked as the manager of the Mexicali Rose Restaurant in Oakland for 25 years.

He was active in the Hispanic community in Oakland, and was a member of the Hispanic community service program La Clinica da la Raza.

He is survived by his wife, Aurora of Vacaville; daughters, Isabel Lauer of Fairfield, Barbara Gamez of Alameda, Monica Lopez of Fairfield and Yvonne Cabral of Antioch; sons, Ronald and David, both of Antioch, and Anthony of Alameda; sister, Isabel Ramirez of Marysville; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Contributions may be made to Isabel Carnero Lauer, 2721 Vista Alta Court, Fairfield 94533.

Arrangements are by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Johanna Gnos

Funeral services for Johanna Gnos, 98, of Dixon will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church. The Rev. Maurice O'Brien will preside. Burial will follow in the Silveyville Cemetery.

Born Nov. 24, 1899, in Switzerland, Mrs. Gnos died May 12, 1998, after a short illness. She left Switzerland by boat in 1927, and lived in Dixon for more than 44 years.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed the outdoors, taking walks and looking at the ranch crops.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Marie and Gene Bunch of Graeagle and Joan and Louie Giannoni of Dixon; sons, Joe of Dixon; sons and daughters-in-law, Ernest and Rosemarie of Dixon and Herman and Lucy of Dixon; daughter, Greda Hebbard of Portland, Ore.; sister, Agatha; and brothers, Pius and Benjamin, both of Switzerland; 19 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, and three grandsons.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a rosary at 7 p.m.
